Quote:
Among the nearby winter wonderland festivities sits a natural-made skating rink, constantly covered in men and women of all ages and all range of skill - some skate like pros and some are clearly new to the sport. As you make your way onto the ice, you seem to be doing fine… that is, until a wayward snowball comes hurtling in your direction -- look out! Hands find their way around you… have you been saved by a friend, or perhaps a good Samaritan that was skating by? Do they manage to keep you standing or did you manage to take them down with you? One thing's for certain...not even the most professional of ice skaters could have prepared themselves for that!

When Jason heard about the lake freezing over and being turned into a skating rink for the Carnival, he was ecstatic. He hadn't been skating in years, there just weren't any good places to do it around her. He grew up playing hockey, until the moved to DC anyway. He enjoyed the sport when he was young, but thinking about playing older was a bit of a scary thought. He didn't end up being very tall and he was certainly scrawny. He probably would have been the worst player Canada ever saw. He still loved the skating aspect of it though. He couldn't do any extravagant tricks, but it was still fun.

And fun was something Xi-Wang needed in his life. So of course he had invited his friend along for a fun day on the ice. He had his own pair of skates laying around somewhere, but he rented a pair for his friend once they arrived at the rink. "Been a while since I've been on the ice, but don't worry. I'll keep my eye on ya just fine." After he had his skates all laced up he slipped his gloves back over his fingers. It was ironic how much he loved skating and yet he hated the cold. You would think he was used to it, but DC had spoiled him a bit. He wasn't as used to the cold as he should have been.

"I promise it's not as hard as it looks." Jason offered a hand to his friend though, happy to help him keep his balance if he needed it. "It's just moving one foot in front of the other really."

It hadn't taken much to get him to agree to joining Jason, there wasn't much that he'd deny his friend, but he had voiced his nervousness over ice skating. He may not have said exactly why but he implied it, at least he felt like he had.

Sitting down he worked to lace up the skates which Jason had rented for him, he hadn't been sure how the sizes would run or anything else, but the other had helped him with sizing and getting a set. Now with them laced he needed to stand up - right? But the blades were so narrow he was sure he'd just tilt and fall to one side or the other. Or just have an ankle go right or left on him.

"Like walking...?" He asked reaching for the others hands in order to stand himself up slowly. He was more than a little hesitant with this, not wanting to hurt himself or the other. Xi-Wang did want to try and enjoy this as much as possible, and injuries would keep that from happening.

"I've never done anything requiring this much balance..."

Jason wasn't exactly the best of teacher's. He didn't really know how to get Xi more comfortable in his skates. "It's not so bad, I can pull you around until you feel more comfortable." He made sure to hold on to his friend as they made their way toward the ice. Cheerful kids were racing past them, eager to spend their energy out on the ice. He hid a laugh when one of them immediately fell once they hit the ice. That was the thing about kids, fearless and able to bounce right back up.

"If he can do it, so can you. We'll stick close to the edge though, seems like that's where people are taking their time." Jason took a small step onto the ice first, demonstrating that he could stand up just fine. He looked like a natural, but was trying not too show off too much. Not until Xi could at least move a little on his own.

"Yeah...please." That at least would give him something to balance with. He could lean more into Jason or lean away as needed. Anything which could help him from falling, and potentially getting hurt, was something he'd take with a smile. He just hoped he didn't hurt Jason somehow. Watching kids, and other people, race by he shivered a bit. he'd never get to that...and he was going to look like a fool in front of people when he fell on his a**, because he was sure it would happen at least once. He should, you'd think anyway, by this age know how to skate and have been ice skating at least once. Sadly he never had been but he'd grown up in Destiny City and they had winters and frozen ponds and snow and such. He'd just never enjoyed it like most people did.

"You think so?" Watching the kid get right back up. He didn't think he could bounce back so easily. But could he skate? Maybe....he sort of hoped he could.

"I-It looks so easy for them and yet I just don't think it's easy for me." As if it were somehow different...that he just wasn't talented or skilled in the basic act of balancing...or like it was something far more complicated for him than other people.

Nodding his head he smiled softly. The edge was a good idea, it would give him something else to hold onto, and grab at if needed, he could have more help maintaining his balance. "Thanks Jason. I really...I like being here - even if I fall and make a fool of myself." Not that he wanted to do either thing but he was sure both would happen, perhaps in abundance even. Watching as Jason stepped out onto the ice he followed suit though much slower and taking his time to get his balance. He wobbled, wibbled even, but he didn't fall right away. He did nearly fall when shifting so he could face the same direction everyone was moving in, so he could go the same way and grab onto the side. That turn, the shifting of his weight, nearly landed him on the ice. "Oh!"

Jason was able to skate just fine, while keeping his attention on Xi, reaching out to catch him a few times when it looked like he was about to fall. So far so good though, Xi was managing to keep himself up right on the ice. A good first step as far as he was concerned. He could have been like that kid and fallen face first into some ice.

"You're doing great." Jason spun around so that he was stand next to Xi, with the fall to his other side this would be a good way to get home moving in a straight line without being paranoid about falling. "Grab onto my hand and I'll keep you moving. You just focus on your balance for now." He kept their pace nice and slow as they made their way along the edge, several people passed them up, everyone with a bright smile on their face.

"You're doing better than me on my first day." Of course he had been like what, three? When he first hit the ice. He had spent most of the day being pulled around by his parents, much like he was doing with Xi now. Even then he had fallen a couple of times by this point.

He should have kept his focus on Jason, and on what he was doing, rather than on other people. He really should have, since focusing on others made him distracted, as he soon started to feel his balance go. It felt like his feet were getting away from his body, moving too far ahead, and he did what most would do - panic. That was when he really started to over balance. "Jason." The others name kept from being yelled, or shouted, it was more of a plea for help as he gripped at the other tighter in order to try and save his failing balance.

He had, in fact, been doing well - better than he thought possible. But all good things came to an end - right? At least in this case it did, as he felt his feet give out from under him.

For a while Jason had just been calming skating beside Xi, but when the other called out his name in a panic he got a little worried. "It's okay, just stay calm and focus on just standing." He moved around to stand behind Xi and slipped his own arms under Xi's, giving him a gentle hug. The plan was to just pull him completely over to the edge and get him stopped and calm down.

Sadly, Xi was already losing his footing. When he friend feet dashed out in front of him, at least Jason was there to make his fall a little lighter. He was sort of able to gently lower his friend to the ground. Once Xi was safely on his butt, he pushed off from his friend's shoulders and skated around to stand in front of him.

"Did you want me to just hug you until you feel comfortable on your feet? I'm not too embarrassed to do that if you're okay with it." He offered his hand out to his friend, digging his skates into the ice so he could help him up.

Glad for the easier landing, he was afraid he was really going to hit the ice hard, Xi-Wang shifted about so he could watch the other. he really did wish he'd learned to skate when he was younger, because he did feel embarrassed here on the ground.

"I...umm...no. I don't mind...if you don't." Reaching out for the others hands he grasped them both tightly as he tried to get his skates under himself. It wasn't going to be easy, he knew it already. "I'm sorry...if I put a damper on your time here." He felt bad, he really did, but he did want to learn. it just meant it would take time and he'd fall - a lot.

Jason had gotten Xi-Wang back onto his feet. He grasped his friend's forearms and gently started to move backwards, pulling him along. He could keep this up for a little bit at least, just so he could get a feel for what his feet felt like in skates and on the ice.

"It's more fun getting a chance to teach someone then just doing whatever." Seriously, it was fun. Because Jason was skating backwards, he was able to see the snowball flying in their direction. He could pull them out of the way, but he was worried he'd cause Xi-Wang to fall again. So he just pulled his friend into a hug so they could take the hit and remain standing. It hit his hand that was wrapped around Xi and he looked around for a source, but couldn't spot anyone.

"Are you okay?" He was already brushing the snow of his back and keeping his eyes open for anymore incoming snowballs.

"You're sure? I mean most people seem to have more fun in skating about." Gesturing to a couple passing them buy, they did look good together and capable. One turned the other and even brought them in close for a dip. They looked good.

As he was watching the couple, sort of wishing for something similar, he was shocked out of his spiraling thoughts when Jason pulled him in close and he felt something hit them. Yelping in shock he clung to the other. "Oh!" Shocked he lifted his head from where he'd hidden his face in the others shoulder. "Someone threw a snowball?" He was guessing but given it was winter, and it felt cold through the layers of fabric, he was pretty sure he knew what had been thrown at them.

"I'm ok...just shocked."

Jason had absolutely no idea where the snowball had come form, he didn't see anyone paying them too much attention of laughing. Whoever it was, they were keeping themselves hidden. At least it seemed like they had all the fun they had been looking for. Maybe it had been disappointing when they didn't fall? Whatever the reason, Jason decided to go back to focusing on getting Xi-Wang stable on his feet.

"Well, I'm sorry I couldn't do more then just brace you for the shock." There hadn't really been enough time for much else. Once the snow was brushed away completely his pushed away from friend a bit, though keeping his hands in his so he could keep his balance.

"Snowballs aside, are you starting to feel better on your feet now?"

"You did enough just keeping us from falling. I'd have hated for us to land on the ice together in a heap." That would have likely ended them both up bruised and injured, and explaining it to Nischal once they got home. Not that Jason's boyfriend wouldn't have understood - he would have. It was just better that they didn't land and get hurt and having to tell the other.

"A little - yeah. I think I'm getting the hang o how to move my legs and feet...and not letting them buckle too much. It' just...odd. It's not like you'd picture it and the pushing from one foot to the other - that's the unfamiliar part I have to get used to really. But it's not too bad."

"See, you're already way better after just a couple of minutes on the ice!" Jason was proud of that at least. Honestly, he wasn't too confident in his teaching skills. He had tried to recall how he had learned, but that had been so long ago that it seemed like something he had been born knowing how to do. Which made, it very hard to explain to someone that had never done it before.

"Before long you'll be skating circles around some of these losers." There were an awful lot of show offs out here though. If you had the skills though, why not flaunt them. He couldn't blame people for showing off to their friends or dates.

"I think I've had to learn how to jump roof tops...and that's helped." So he had better balance than he would have previously, before becoming a senshi. That had helped and it even had given him some physical strength he otherwise wouldn't have had - he was lazy. "Its just getting used to pushing like that and moving in such an odd way...and not forgetting. If I keep it in mind and think about it then I can do it. But if I'm not thinking about it I mess up. And if I mess up or get startled I can't help but panic and snowball." And have a mess up.

"I don't think I'll be skating around anyone...I wouldn't want to anyway....I don't like to show off - you know that." Ducking his head as he smiled. He was never one for showing off, it wasn't his style, he was too shy for such things. "If you want I can keep to the side here and skate and you can have some fun as well?"

Jason didn't exactly work out himself, but he had noticed since becoming a Senshi that he did have a bit more 'natural' strength. It was still nothing compared to some people, but it did give him some confidence at least. "Well, don't think about the snowballing and you should be fine." The more someone tended to worry about messing up, the more they tended to do just that. Or at least, that was his own experience with the situation.

"You might not like to show off, bu you want me to? Pfft. I'm fine staying here. I will let go of you hands for now though. Since you seem a bit better on your feet." And just like that, he gently let go of his friend and moved around, with a little bit of a flaunty spin, so that he was skating beside him instead of in front of him.
