Near the outskirts of the clearing is a snow covered pathway leading into the adjacent forest. Couples and clusters of friends disappear into the shaded area, their delight in the beautiful scenery loud enough for any passersby to hear. Deciding to venture in to see what the fuss is all about, you (and perhaps whoever you're with) head towards the marked path. Twenty minutes or so in and you soon realize that you must have fallen distracted at some point because the path is no longer obvious and there's neither sound nor sight of any other people around. The sun begins to set and you can swear you hear quiet whispers among the trees. You'd better find your way back somehow - and fast - before the whispers’ owners find you first.
Destiny City always seemed to go all out for holiday events. Trinity had heard about the carnival celebrating the winter season and had hemmed and hawed over deciding if she wanted to attend. A day before everything was set to begin the young woman finally made her decision to attend the festivities. Taking care to dress in multiple layers that flowed around her. Winter was not kind to her wardrobe. The young woman had opted to take her camera along for afternoon after packing it carefully into her carrying case. Once she arrived at the location where the event was being held she could begin finding those magical shots. That was the plan at least - now she wasn't so sure what was going on. She stumbled once more in the darkened forest, attempting to figure out how she had managed to get so turned around.
Trinity had, for the most part, had been having an afternoon that was filled with conversations with random passerby. Events like these helped to make connections for the budding photographer. Trin loved to help others out by taking pictures and promising to send them a copy via social platforms and never thought about asking for any compensation. She loved to see those around her smiling.
Trinity wasn't smiling now. Nope, she was scowling something fierce at the tree that she was certain she'd already passed once before. Sometime in the afternoon she'd followed behind a group of revellers as they trekked into the forest via a wide marked path. Feeling that she'd get some great pictures in the forest Trinity had followed them at a sedate pace. Her camera was around her neck for the most part as she would find some interesting thing to take some photos of before continuing onward. However it had been quite awhile since the teen had heard any conversation drifting back from the large group that had been ahead of her and it was with dawning realization that she was no longer on a path that seemed to have markers. How had she ended up getting so turned around? Pulling out her cellphone Trinity activated the flashlight app and shone the beam around. Nothing stood out. Holding the phone out blue eyes peered into the surrounding environment. Where those whispers she was hearing? Trin couldn't see anyone around her and yet to her ears it sounded like malevolent whispers were all around her. What exactly was going on? Had she finally lost her mind? No, she was still sane but it was an interesting, if not, slightly frightening scenario.
"Okay, no need to panic yet. I simply got turned around. Sure those whispers are creepy but I can deal," her voice was soft as she brought her camera back up to peer through the lens. Surely if anything creepy were out there it would make a great story if she could snap a picture of something. Her nerves were seemingly fine although in she did notice a small tremble in her hands. Dusk had fallen and she was alone; but she would be fine. Right?
The Space Mermaid
Figured this works well for an opening.
