Quote:
A close friend or loved one makes a gift of a fuzzy, oversized sweater that they say they've purchased from one of the local merchants. It's not exactly attractive looking but they seem unfortunately very proud of the purchase so you dutifully at least try it on. This proves to be a poor decision on your part as you soon realize that you're unable to remove the fuzzy monstrosity. Even worse, every word that comes out of your mouth... comes out in song! What the heck?

There's some mischievous magic afoot here but as hard as you try to tug it off or stop breaking into song, you're unable to remove the sweater for one full day and any word out of your mouth happens to have a cheerful tune to it.

Hope you didn't have any major plans for the day!

He had not explained his actions after the brawl.

Not yet, at least. Rhys had told Hitch let me figure myself out first and that had been that, because he hadn't wanted to make his husband feel bad, and he also hadn't known how to answer the question of what on earth were you doing?

It had stemmed from a variety of reasons. Rhys had only a smidgen of regret, the rest not so much. He was curled up on the couch now, carefully sorting through Christmas ornaments, not because he was a deeply Christmas-y person, but because he did actually love the whole decoration aspect of the holidays.

A mess of tinsel, wrapping paper, wreaths, and other such things were littered on the floor around him, piled in heaps and stuck over every surface humanly possible. It looked a little bit like a Christmas store had vomited up everything in its belly in the little living room of the townhouse.

But it smelled of cinnamon and apple, one of Rhys's favorite scents. It was making him feel just that much more at ease, at the very least.

You make me touch my elf.

Still a stupid sweater and all. But considering the unspoken awkwardness of after the brawl... and considering it was no less hilarious, well... Hitch honestly still wasn't happy with Rhys. He was confused as hell on top of already being mixed up, and he was kind of pissed that he couldn't even get a straight answer out of his husband, considering.

Even so, Hitch loved him, and he kind of needed Rhys. That was what the whole marriage thing was about and all. So he strode into the room, clearing his throat as he toyed with his crudely wrapped, decidedly lumpy present.

"Can't get much use after Christmas, " and he extended it with a kind of tentative smile, "so I better give it to ya now." He had better stuff for the holiday itself anyway.

God he needed Rhys to laugh. They could both use it.

He didn't like the lack of communication between them. It was his own fault, and he knew it, because he had started this, but the uncomfortable air was stifling; a nagging, prickling feeling beneath his skin. Not talking to one's partner - one's husband - was a recipe for disaster, Rhys very well knew, and that was the last thing he wanted.

He hadn't heard Hitch come in, a pile of messy wrapping paper, glitter, and various ribbons in a multitude of colors piled haphazardly around him, Rhys jumping a little as Hitch's voice came wafting towards him. It was followed by a present, extended out in a slightly less than professional wrapping style, and a small smile on Hitch's face that looked painfully tentative.

It was stupid. Hitch shouldn't feel tentative around him. They were married.

Rhys reached up and took the package, setting it in his lap, but he didn't open it just yet. Instead he reached up and caught hold of his husband's hand, looking up at him, his expression a little guarded, but not unwelcome.

"I...owe you an apology," he said, voice a little stilted. "For...for the fight."

It was kind of ironic, too, and maybe that was part of Hitch's frustration - he was fighting so hard to be more honest with his husband, and to be met with a wall after all that was... hurtful, to be honest. Especially after that insanely intense night they'd had when Hitch had finally cracked and admitted he needed help. Not that Hitch had the words to say it like that. More than anything, he just wanted things to be okay again. At least between them.

He looked a little surprised when his husband took his hand, but Hitch's fingers immediately curled around Rhys', squeezing them warmly as he met Rhys' gaze. Hitch didn't say any bullshit like 'you don't have to apologize': they'd both know it was bullshit, and really, Hitch was grateful for it. Instead, he asked lowly, "Can you talk about it yet?" Even if he desperately wanted a why to chase that apology, he didn't want to push too hard.

Hitch's fingers were warm and familiar against his own, wrapping securely in spite of the fact that things had been tense lately. Rhys felt his cheeks heat, head ducking slightly, because although he'd been much more up front and aware of his emotions recently, that didn't entirely take away the anxiety. It was still there, at the edges of his mind, hedging around his thoughts like a persistent creature unwilling to leave him alone.

"A little," he said quietly, and then, "Celsus knew Gevauden. He warned me of him, one day. About how angry he is at Order. About how he seems like he would rather be with the Negaverse still. About how he feels like he knows better than the rest of us because he's been in the Negaverse and he knows how they think."

And it wasn't like Rhys could say anything to that, because he himself had been in the Negaverse, but had had those memories wiped in favor of remembering Hitch. He hadn't even been given a choice in the matter, but it wasn't as though he would have said anything different even if he had.

Rhys's fingers tightened on Hitch's unconsciously.

"I got angry," he admitted, in a low voice. "I didn't want to think about it, but I couldn't help it."

Hitch listened attentively; he'd been waiting for this, after all. He'd badly wanted to know what it was that compelled Rhys to do what he'd done that day, seemingly completely out of the blue. He squeezed his husband's hand as he spoke, trying not to betray any too strong of a reaction - it was hard for him, though. He was always a little too expressive, and as much as he didn’t want to trigger Rhys’ anxiety and make him clam up again, it was ******** hard - especially since he’d been so tightly wound himself ever since the s**t had hit the fan.

Then, with it all said and done -

“He never acted like that with me, “ seemed like a good response; it wasn’t saying what Celsus saw wasn’t true. He doubted Fritz had any reason to lie about it. Even so. “He’s been really good ‘bout the whole… “ Hitch kind of gestured vaguely to his face before saying in kind of a stilted voice, “eye thing. An’ we hit it off, mostly.” Minus this little setback with fighting his husband. “I ain’t happy he took up fightin’ with you, “ and he wouldn’t be happy with anyone who hurt his husband, period, “But, y’know - I don’t know - you saw him an’ me were cool, an’ it’s not like I’m askin’ you to be his best friend or anythin’, just… “

God he never thought he’d be saying this, but, “An’ I mean, that s**t with the negaverse - bein’ angry with him ain’t gonna make him wanna go back less, right?” Hitch kind of tried to smile; he wouldn’t have said it a year ago. Maybe not even six months ago. After everything, though… “Not everybody’s got the same kind of support you do, babe.”
