Quote:
You're out and about doing whatever it is you've got on your agenda for the day when you just so happen to spot a dark patch of color among the snow that lines the side of path you're on. Upon closer inspection, it's a leather wallet, stained from the dampness of the snow. Peeking inside, you find two things: one, a crumpled list of people's first names with random objects scribbled next to them and a collection of dollar bills. A lot of dollar bills. In fact, at first glance, it looks to be well over two hundred dollars.

There are no other items in the wallet - no identification, no credit cards, nothing to help you identify the wallet's owner, just a Christmas list and a wad of money. Looking around the area, it's clear that nobody else is around.

What do you do?

Lani was out and about running errands, 'out and about' having a loose definition of the term in this case, given her propensity for staying indoors. The holidays were coming upon everyone, and holidays meant gifts, and buying them for others.

That, too, had a loose definition, when it came to Kalani. She had a pretty large extended family, lots of cousins (and second cousins, third cousins, etc) mostly on her dad's side of the family, owing to his many siblings, but she preferred to pretend they didn't exist. Petty, perhaps, given that they were still on good terms with her mom, but such was the way of Kalani. In any case, she was out doing some shopping, so there was that.

The only difference between her normal ventures outdoors and today was that today, for whatever reason existing, Rune was accompanying her. It wasn't exactly like Kalani kept her a secret, unlike a certain classmate of hers- her mom certainly knew she was keeping a cat, and was actually proud of Kalani for putting in the effort of taking care of something other than herself- but it was... inconvenient, really? Awkward, maybe? Well, at the very least, Lani had already taken care of Rune's gift, having shelled out the money to get the Mauvian a small mp3 player of her own, in the hopes that perhaps she wouldn't steal Lani's anymore.

(Honestly, the teen wasn't really sure just why Rune couldn't magic up one of her own, seeing as these magical cats were supposed to be technological geniuses, purportedly, but what was done was done, and with any luck, it would be enough to make the cat happy for the time being.)

Technically, also, Kalani had already gotten a gift for her mom, so in reality, she wasn't really shopping for gifts for anyone as much as she was window shopping, eyeing some of the new fashions in some of the clothing shops, making a note of what caught her interest the most, for the sake of bugging her mother later about.

Having Rune following her around made actually going inside anywhere to shop highly difficult, however; while Alise might have been all for toting her own personal cat with her everywhere, Lani wasn't super keen on the idea of having to carry Rune around anywhere, whether in a backpack or not. At another point, Lani had considered maybe just attaching a leash to the kitten and pretending that Rune was some highly trained cat that enjoyed going for walks, but that required more effort than Lani was willing to do. In the end, she settled for just pretending she didn't know anything about the fluffy hat-wearing kitten following her around everywhere, which she felt was the easiest way out.

Besides, Rune would probably have caused some sort of incident or another if she actually let the cat go indoors with her.

It was only really a few hours or so, if even that, but soon enough, all errands and shopping were done for the day, and Kalani was ready to head on back home to get back to doing absolutely nothing productive whatsoever. On the way back, though, something in the snow caught her eye, and upon closer inspection, it turned out to be... a wallet?

Glancing around to see if anyone else was in the vicinity, Kalani picked up the wallet, and opened it up to take a look inside. The list of names wasn't of any importance to her, but there was money... and a lack of anything that might identify who the wallet belonged to...

Well, finders keepers, right? There wasn't exactly anyone around to claim the wallet, either, so...

Now if she could just guarantee that Rune would keep her mouth shut...

"Kalani... you are not thinking of pocketing that, right? You'd try to see if we could find its owner, right?" Rune asked inquisitively, guessing quite well that Kalani likely has other ideas in mind. Rune flicked her tail to and fro expectantly, awaiting for Kalani's astute reply.

Predictably, Rune spoke up. Perhaps it was wishful thinking that the Mauvian would look the other way just this once, as the cat's strong moral code always got in the way of Kalani doing what she wanted.

"There's no driver's license or anything with a name and address on it," Kalani responded, glancing down at the kitten, "Even if someone came to claim it, how would you know if they were the true owner?"

"Besides, if we just leave it here, someone else will pick it up."

She hoped that was a sound enough reasoning to sway Rune into letting her keep the wallet.

"Well, we could try investigating the area... who knows, the poor soul might be looking for their misplaced wallet right at this very moment," Rune responded as if this line of thought was the most natural thing in the world.

"Otherwise... you do make an excellent point. We shouldn't just leave the wallet where we found it. As you observed... there is no such license or ID..." Rune found herself redundantly repeating the facts back to herself, likely hoping albeit with futility that further facts would present themselves to the pair. Unfortunately, it appears highly doubtful that such a revelation would occur.

"So... now what do you think we should do next?" Rune proceeded to ask Kalani. Rune... thoughtfully refrained suggesting that they make a stop to, say, the police station to drop off the wallet. But even she found it highly doubtful that they would absolutely be able to return it to its proper owner. If anything, as far as she herself has observed, sometimes these sort of problems should best be handled by themselves. Moreover, this could be an excellent opportunity for them to gain experience, but naturally, Rune is just grasping at straws at this point since Kalani has other ideas in mind.

"Do you see anyone else around?" Kalani asked Rune, making a broad, sweeping gesture as if for emphasis. After all, if there had been anyone nearby, then they wouldn't be having this conversation, now would they?

When Rune asked what they should do next, Kalani paused, pondering. She knew what Rune was probably thinking, and Kalani was hard-pressed to turn in a wallet with spendable cash, not when there wasn't anything in it to identify its owner. Besides, who was to say that it hadn't been purposely left there for them to find?

"There's gotta be at least $200 in here," Lani said, counting the bills, "Think about it, Rune- think about all the idol merchandise you can buy with that. You'd like that, wouldn't you?"

Normally, Lani would be all for keeping the money for herself, but if she was going to win Rune over, then it was best to appeal to her hobbies. Besides, if she didn't have to buy Rune things with her own money, it was even better.

Rune gasped and her mind promptly went on overdrive. $200 was indeed... a lot of money. If she budgeted carefully, she could... finally make that sweeping purchase of a brand new kingsblade (essentially, a rather fancy glowstick appropriate for concerts) with multiple shades of colors pertaining to the subunit and its members of her choice... OR she could finally make up her mind to purchase new songs to finally (and legally) expand her music library. After all, what kind of fan would Rune be if she did not show her direct support to the idols she heartily revered?

And yet, once Rune realized where her mind is taking her, she readily shook her head and huffed in mild disapproval. How could she easily fall for that? What if the person that misplaced that wallet needed that money? What if... they are looking for it right now? Therefore, she made up her mind to at least propose one more ditch effort that Kalani and she could try to enact.

"That.. what you say... is very true, BUT we should at the very least make an attempt to scan the area... at the very least," Rune replied with caution.

"There's nobody else," Kalani repeated, wishing Rune would just give in already, before someone did show up. Not only would she probably have to turn in the wallet, but Lani was pretty certain she'd look pretty crazy for standing here arguing with a cat, who, technically, wasn't supposed to be able to talk.

"Think about it, Rune," she said, not willing to budge on her decision, "You could buy lots of idol merchandise. Those fancy glowsticks? Your CDs? Could probably even find a costume for cats?"

(Actually, Lani kinda hoped nobody was that crazy enough to design costumes for cats.)

little does lani know tochi exists and is willing enough to make rune idol costumes

"You... make a very fine point, Kalani.." Rune helplessly responded.

In under no uncertain terms would Rune readily consider Kalani's proposal as... any good, but it was a fact that she could buy a lot of idol merchandise, much that are actually only produced in limited quantities and tied to incredibly rare events. And yet, she still could not feel a pang of regret that they did not at least try to scan the area.

".... but could we at least, I don't know, walk on the block... try to appear like we're looking for the owner of the wallet, phantom as they are at this point.. before we make off with this generous find?"

Merurulince
Rune would have a field day if having a local seamstress that shares remarkably similar interests AND does not think of a talking cat as in any way strange a reality...

Kalani really wanted nothing more than to just head straight on home, where it was warm and where she could figure out what to do with the cash, but Rune was relentless, and finally, with a loud and dramatic sigh, she finally gave in. "Fine, fine, one walk around the block, and then we're headed home," she told Rune, making it clear that this was final, and no further arguments allowed.

Honestly, she had expected Rune to be more all for spending the money on her idol stuff, but of course, the cat didn't budge easily.

Rune grinned and her tail rose and waved in approval, "That's the spirit, Kalani..! Shouldn't take us too long.. and after that, we could definitely head home..." and count our spoils, Rune couldn't help but think.

Rune's excitement grew palpable in her gait... they have, as Rune hoped for the both of them to do, tried to find the owner of the wallet but it was in vain... so at this point, she couldn't help but agree with Kalani that they best head back and make the best of what they have found. Although, in Rune's case, perhaps she could generously use their newly gained proceeds to fund herself a new kingsblade after all...? But.. what would Kalani have to herself? Would there be enough left for herself? Before Rune knew it.. their stroll around the block came to and end...

And thus the two went on what was essentially a half-hearted stroll around the block, in an attempt to find the true owner of the wallet... though they didn't really put a great deal of effort into it, nor did they really ask around, not that there was anyone to ask to begin with. All too soon, or perhaps none too soon, Kalani was ready to call it , though she had been ready to call it since they first found the wallet, and it was time, she declared, to return home.

(The next few days would see orders made for some particularly pricey and limited edition idol merch, including the 'fancy glowsticks', all made in Rune's name. If anyone were to come looking for the missing wallet, and somehow trace it back to them, they would find no wallet or cash... just a cat with some really expensive kingblades.)
