Quote:
Fresh snow has fallen over Destiny City for the third time this week; most people seem to have stayed inside today due to a particularly heavy flurry, but you find yourself outside tonight for some reason. The weather has faded, revealing a sparkling night sky. Much of the ground is covered in a crisp layer of snow--but more than that, beautiful flowers in the shape of snowflakes have sprouted in the ground. They grow in small patches and permeate a pleasant, sweet fragrance. If the flowers are not kept in freezing temperatures, they melt, but fur the duration of their lifespan they are beautiful, fragile things. In such a busy metropolis, isn't it nice to take a moment to take a moment and appreciate nature? Even if there does seem to be something a little magical about this?

The cold had never really seemed to bother Otto much, even before he'd been a page of Mercury, back when he'd been only Axton Finch, and all he'd had to worry about were classes and making sure he got to work on time. He'd wondered if maybe his tie to the snowy planet had given him a natural resilience. It'd have made sense, at least in a magical sort of way, but he didn't have that connection anymore, and still didn't mind the snow and frosty weather.

He wasn't sure he could say the same for his lovely companion. Not that she complained or really acted like the winter weather bothered her, but he could feel the slight shiver shaking her from the core. Especially with how closely she'd tucked herself in against his side as they walked.

"You can wear my hat if you want." It was dove grey and simple, but it didn't match her ankle length coat or cashmere scarf. Still, it'd help to chase away the chill on their long walk back to her car.

He hadn't yet noticed the flowers, but the fragrance was getting hard to miss. At first he thought it was coming from the Des, some new shampoo or soap. Something sweet sprayed on the skin or down the front of her blouse. There were a few different scents he'd come to recognize as belonging to her, but this...this was different. New. And something that hadn't been present trough dinner, or the car ride before. "Do you smell that?"

Years ago, Natalie Roux had been a lover of winter - from a distance. She was prone to lingering near windows, her breath fogging the glass as she stared, captivated, at the snow as it fell, a mug of cocoa with giant marshmallows clutched in her palms. She was young enough that it was still whimsical, even a little magical around Christmas. (Especially that last Christmas, knowing then that magic was real - before that New Year’s party - )

It wasn’t any of those things to Desdemona, but she had inherited Natalie’s aversion to the cold. As Amphitrite, snow was a slight hindrance, but the cold at least wasn’t a factor - wearing her civilian mask, yeah, it was cutting through her like a saw. But it was not like her to complain when she was uncomfortable, even if she couldn’t force herself to stop shivering. “I’m fine, handsome, “ an old lie that had held over in much more dire straights. Although she still did stay close.

Granted, all that about the snow being nothing was a bit of a lie. Even if she tried not to think back on it, embarrassed by her moment of weakness, it was hard not to associate snow with that night. The night ‘I’m fine’ had failed her. That New Year’s after her second stint in captivity when she had called him, when he’d held her in his arms as she fractured, just that once, sobbing into his arms as the snow fell.

He wouldn’t know she associated snow with Ax - Otto - and she would not tell him. But she did. “Hm? - smell what?”

Otto didn't exactly believe her, not with the way he could feel her trembling against his side, but he would absolutely take her at her word. "Well, if you change your mind you're more than welcome to it." And either she would or she wouldn't, but he'd be sure to keep her close to his side to offer as much warmth by proxy as he could.

Her question had him looking sidelong at her, pale eyes looking over her face before he smiled down at her. "You don't smell that?" Gaze flicking up and around he sniffed again, as if trying to find the source. "I thought it was your perfume or something like that, but I didn't smell it earlier. It's like...flowers, sort of." It really didn't fit the weather around them, but it almost smelled a little like a spring day.

He looked back to her, wondering if it was something she was wearing and he'd somehow gone the whole evening without noticing it, but that just didn't seem likely.

Desdemona frowned lightly. Then, she shut her eyes and eased up lightly onto her toes, unconsciously, sniffing deliberately now at the air to try and catch a whiff of whatever Otto was talking about.

A few scents met her. The fresh, crisp scent of winter air, punctuated lightly by the aroma of something burning, somewhere - a fireplace, probably? Something like that. The scent of Otto himself, of course, both his cologne and the natural scent of him that lingered beneath, much more subtle. Probably would have been even easier to smell if she buried her face in his neck or his back, but that wasn't really the objective here.

Yes, there was...

"There is something, " she remarked, a little surprised, her eyes fluttering back open. Something nice. "You thought I smelled that good, huh?" she teased gently, nudging him in the side. "Color me flattered, handsome."

Otto was fairly certain at this point that he'd never tire of watching her. The same couldn't be said for anyone else he'd ever been involved with for any length of time, and he hadn't expected to find anyone he found quite as captivating as he found Desdemona. Maybe it was the time apart, or the near panic at the thought of having to leave her becaus behind when he's been corrupted. Otto wasn't sure, but he was starting to recognize it.

He watched her now as her head tipped back and she rose up on dainty toes, bright eyes falling closed. There was just something about the way she moved, deliberate and confident. The world was hers and everyone within it. Which was just fine with him.

Her comment had him grinning back at her, and he reached for her free hand so he could draw her into him. "You do smell this good, just not this specific scent." Something spicy, less overly floral. He made a point of leaning in so his face was only an inch from her cheek, breathing deeply. "Positively intoxicating."

But if it wasnt her, than what was it?

Desdemona grinned at the attention, because yes, naturally flattery would get him everywhere - when she felt like it. "Good to know... " Although it did have her curious about what was actually causing the scent. It was out of place for the season, unless someone had opted to set up shop somewhere. A little bit of spring in the winter, seemed like a smart marketing angle to pass off some blooms at an exorbitant price.

Even so...

With a careful glance around, something did seem strange. Out of place. "What's that?" she questioned with a light tilted of her head, gesturing ahead to something... odd a short ways away, something breaking up the otherwise smooth expanses of snow.

He ghosted his lips against her temple as he drew back to see what she was talking about, and it was such an odd thing that for a moment his eyes didn't seem to register what it was they were seeing sticking out of the crisp, untouched snow along the edge of the sidewalk a little ahead of them.

"Is...that a flower?" It was questioning, doubtful, and he tilted his head as he stared ahead at it. Uncurling his arm, he caught her hand again as he walked towards it for a better look. "Who would stick a glass flower in the snow?" Because it had to be glass. Ice didn't form like that, and it certainly didn't sprout from the ground in fragrant blossoms.

But if it was glass, where was the flowery smell coming from?

Possibly foolishly, Otto reached out to touch it, and when nothing happened he reached for the stem. It snapped in his grasp as he pulled, cold to the touch. With a puzzled frown he straightened and held it for Des to see. "It's ice."

See, these were all good, valid questions that Otto was asking, although Desdemona didn't have any answers. Why did anything happen in this city? It was a strange, unpredictable little hub of chaos that went beyond Negaverse magic.

Presented with the flower, this odd, delicate little spectacle of ice, Desdemona took the flower gently from him and examined it from every angle, marveling at the delicate beauty of it as much as examining it for some sort of clue. "There are more, " she noted with her gaze flashing over them. "Huh." She drew it closer to her nose, inhaling and nodding to herself. "It's definitely these you smelled. - I've never seen anything like this before."

Was it worth telling Chase about? Maybe? - they didn't seem particularly threatening or anything.

He glanced out over the snow, the other flowers, and his lips tugged into a contemplative curve. "While you were away, I think it was the winter before last, but maybe not." Frown lines creased his brow as he tried to recall it more clearly. "There were ice crystals. They were bigger than flakes, and they didn't melt. I'm not sure what happened to them, but this seems almost similar." But only almost.

The crystals didn't have any fragrance, they didn't sprout from the ground. To Otto they'd just seemed like large snowflakes gathering in clumps on the sides of roads and walkways. Until they were just gone.

"I wonder what these would do if we took them inside." If they melted or not. Not that Otto knew what that'd mean one way or another, but they'd at least have a little more information. He could ask around, or she could, and find out if anyone else had seen them.

"Crystals?" Desdemona turned to him with a quizzical glance, intrigued. "Interesting... Did they fall from the sky, or just appear?" Perhaps a silly question. Since he was bringing them up now in comparison to the flowers, it was probably the later. Even so. Inquisitive minds demanded clarification.

At the question, though, her eyes immediately brightened, and there was something like mischief in her smile. "Let's find out." She leaned down and snapped another of the beautiful, mysterious little blossoms free, toying with it briefly in her hands before turning to Otto.

She eased up onto the tips of her toes again, only this time, very deliberately, her tongue poking out of the corner of her much in an atypical show of determination from the ever-sultry woman. With gentle, lingering touches, she tucked the flower behind Otto's ear, adjusting it so it sat just so. Then she was flat on her feet again, admiring her handiwork with a certain smug triumph. "There. We'll find out when we get home, and until then - have to say it suits you, handsome."

To that question Otto could only shake his head, brow furrowed gently. "I don't remember." Either he simply hadn't been paying that much attention at the time or it was another small detail lost to his corruption, insignificant as it was. There were a good many people they could all, if it was important enough.

Soft grey eyes followed her as she kneeled to pluck another for from the snow, admiring the shape of her legs, the delicate movements of small fingers. Until she was having him again, a mischievous look in her eyes and tongue poking between kissable lips. It was the look of someone that was up to something, and Otto want sure if he should be intrigued, or wary. All the same his hands found her waist as she rose up on her toes.

It became very obvious a second later as she tucked the cold, icy stem behind his ear, taking her time to arrange it just so before sucking down to three flats of her feet again. "That's very cold, he murmured down to her, making no move to remove it. "I think it'd probably suit you better, but I'll take the compliment."
