It was decided, they were traveling north. For the past few months, Pello and his family took small trips up the river to acclimate themselves to the waters. It seemed they were a bit more sensitive than most, so they wanted to be certain they wouldn't be perpetually sick when they finally made the trip up. Being sick meant delays, and delays meant poor service. They wanted to provide the best impression for the first deliveries they would have going back up to the mainland freshwaters. Now, with their first trip the next day, Pello was taking on last moment to consider his journey by waiting near the waters meshed and the river met the sea.
The day was growing late, but the sunlight was still bright as it neared the horizon. Around him, young Hapuna played near the sands, their fingers covered as they dug up shells and stones. A few Pale'iko were lounging about, travelers who had just made the trip and were determining where to go next. Thankfully, other residents who were used to the visitors now took no time in greeting them and acting as guides. It was a normal occurrence, seeing the silver skinned neighbors from the rivers. They almost felt as natural as the Moakai visitors who came from the deep. The Menehune, however, were still quite interesting as they were few and far in between.
Pello grinned to himself, his dimples showing as he thought about how he would soon see more as they traveled up stream and to the border village of the two areas. His role was easy on this trip, greet as many folk as possible and try to make connections for future business. Thankfully, he was a friendly person so it wouldn't be an issue at all.

There was something interesting about the area where the fresh and salt waters mixed. It seemed as though there were a lot of treasures to be found in such areas, though whether this was normal or just a coincidence he couldn't really say. He hadn't found anyone in this particular area to ask about such things. As such he was instead just taking advantage of the bounty. Currently he was digging around in the thick mix of mud and sand, trying to find the crystal that he was able to sense somewhere within it.
As he dug he found himself lucky enough to also find some shells among the mix of materials, all of which he rinsed out before tucking them away into his pack. He'd gathered a lot in the way of shells and yet he didn't think that he had enough of them yet. Likely because they came in so many shapes, sizes, and colors here. It was so unlike the more muted shells back home that didn't seem nearly as amazing to him. Since they were so unlike what one could find at home he had a feeling that his fellow Menehune would enjoy them just as much as he did.
Giving a bit of a humming sound he scooped up a handful of the mud and sand mix, shaking it, before he found within his palm a tiny orange crystal, "Not bad." Not the best he'd ever found but it was still a pretty color. Definitely worth the effort, especially with the added bonus of the shells thrown in. Giving a smile he moved along once more, seeking out another 'ping' from another crystal. It would appear as though Uukai's blessing upon him continued even now with him away from home. Something he was indeed grateful for as it caused his travels to continue to be profitable.

Pello turned away from the river, more than confident that his mature body now was well suited for his trip the next day. He hardly felt sick anymore, and usually it was only when he mixed traveling above the water with the freshwater itself. He knew that he was ready to make the longer trip, and hoped it would be fruitful and full of exciting adventures and new people. As he glanced around one last time, he caught sight of a dark color against the bright sand and fabrics of his people. A taller, elder Menehune was settled near the sand and mud, digging away at something Pello couldn't see. His eyes evaluated the back of Kaimi's form, studying the foreign outfits and styles of the dark skinned swamp child. His eyes hungerly took in the details, the differences of such a rare find, and he had to take a moment or two to pull himself out of his evaluation. Gosh, if he kept that up, he'd be considered a freak over a friend when he finally saw the greater group upriver.
Deciding that he had some time to kill, and some social skills to hone, Pello decided it was worth taking a quick trip over to meet the elder traveler. It was an easy task to swim across the currents from the river mouth, as they were no where near as strong as the reefs, and eventually he made it to see that Kaimi was digging into the mud and sands searching for things. It looked like, based on what little he could see, it was a mix of shells and stones.
Then he saw the orange crystal, and let out a woosh of a whistle in response, "That seems like a lucky find!"

Kaimi gave a slight jump, having been so caught up in his digging that he hadn't really been prepared for someone addressing him, and definitely not so close. Turning his head he glanced at the brightly colored Hapuna that was there behind him. He starred for a moment, mind whirling, before he said, "Ah! Yes, it was a lucky find. I haven't seen too many this color before." Maybe it was something that could only be found in this location? He couldn't really say that he knew exactly why certain crystals showed up in certain areas. It was just the natural way of things he supposed?
He opened his hand up, holding it out so that Pello could look over the crystal that Kaimi had found. Might as well let the friendly local check out the piece that he'd found instead of instantly putting it away, right? Once he felt that he'd given it enough time he turned his eyes back to the crystal, "I should be able to make a nice necklace or bracelet out of this one." Maybe bracelet since it was a smaller crystal? He preferred using bigger, more flashy ones for necklaces... but that might just be his own personal style?

Bright golden eyes watched as the darker Menehune spun around, and Pello took a moment to smile sheepishly at having caught Kaimi off guard. Sometimes he had a tendency to charge in and blurt out things without realizing others didn't necessarily hear his petite form approach. However, it seemed as if Kaimi recovered easily, and Pello was grateful as his smile turned genuine and easy. Oh yes, it was nice to see someone who was so open, and already he suspected that the rumors of the dark skinned swamp kind were a bit off. At least, this one didn't seem cold and unapproachable. And for that, he already was grateful.
Leaning forward, the boy grinned at the sight of the thing, "Wow, that is really nice!"
Blinking a bit, he let out a laugh and held up his wrist, where a teal with gold veined stone was tied securely by a string, "I'm not jeweler, but the stones out here do make nice trinkets. We've got so many colors I'm sure you wont find the same stone twice!" Looking down at the stone, he smiled a bit. It was nice to be reminded of his good friend, and he probably should see her before he left.

Kaimi gave a thoughtful sound before he said, "That sounds promising. The shells here are of a nice variety as well. Seems I should be able to find a lot to bring back home with me at this rate." The fact that there were enough stones that he might not see the same one twice was a boast he hoped was a true one. He could really go for that many unique crystals from a land as far away as this one was. It was sure to make trading for the various things he wanted back home a whole lot easier.
Giving a smile he said, "I might have to stay a bit longer then I planned to so that I can find a lot of those stones, Uukai be willing." If the Goddess continue to walk at his side despite his distance from home and continued to bless him then he'd be able to find all manner of wonderful gems! Some of which he'd be sure to give to her in thanks. One didn't spurn a Goddess as kind as she was after all.
