A classroom's worth of people died in that mission. People her age, or older, or even a few years younger — all to something that they were supposed to control. How was that fair? Everything about the Negaverse was supposed to protect them! And while Stella could probably explain all of it, the whole expedition sat badly with her. What if she died? What if Argellite died? They could've been any one of the people who didn't make it against the putrid troll monster!
Lovi reminded herself that she couldn't keep dwelling on the outcome. Bruised and scraped, they survived with injuries that could be explained away by exploring the forest or having a rough gym tumble. They stayed away from the worst youma, kept their exploring to stuff that didn't take a lot of climbing, and came out alive. They had each other. And most of all, they had medals that they could show Stella now!
With a resigned sigh, Lovi's thoughts returned to reality. Now they faced a short walk down Romano's clean halls, where boring white tiles stared up at them and those ugly speckled ceiling squares were offset by fluorescent lights. Most of the hall was empty but for the dorm doors on either side, institutionally functional or functionally institutional, and the few things of note were decorations around the name tags on the doors. Lovi knew her dorm by the smattering of die-cut plastic flowers she painstakingly fastened to the door with double-stick tape. Lovina Lee, it read, with no second name beneath it.
"We can stay in my dorm for a while," Lovi mentioned to the other girl. She fished her keys from her jacket pocket stiffly, fumbled around until she found the proper one, and unlocked the door for both of them. Touching Izzy's shoulder, she guided her inside.
When the door closed behind her, Lovi dropped her calm and slumped against the door with exhausted excitement. "Can you believe what happened? That felt so unreal! and we made it out of there, but like…" She covered her mouth with her hands. "So many people died." So many people they never even met. Now they were safe, but her hands shook and her body trembled like a cell phone that kept getting calls.

It was funny how sometimes you could take a tumble or blow, or any number of things though should hurt, but in the heat of the moment, with your heart pounding and adrenaline rushing it was nothing. Until the excitement was over and the pulse calms, and there was nothing left to distract from the way your body felt. Back at the academy, her arm link with Lovi and the pair of them making their slow way down the hall of the dormitories, Izzy could feel that she'd nailed her knee on something when the floor had caved in beneath them. It wasn't broken, but she was pretty sure there'd be one hell of a bruise there when she stripped off the uniform tights, and she was starting to walk with a slight limp. In week she knew she'd be fine, but gym class was gunna suck a bit in the mean time. As they reached Lovi's door Izzy's thoughts collected from wherever they'd wandered, and she straightened up as her friend unlocked the door, hands drawing away from her arm so as not to be restrictive. As she was nudged she walked inside, half limping over to Lovi's bed to take a seat on the edge. Someone Izzy had managed not to dwell on all the people that'd died. That she and Lovi had escaped that fate somehow, however narrowly. It had her looking up, purple eyes widening a touch as the reality of it came back to her all at once. "It doesn't feel real," she agreed, voice soft and a little hollow. It could have been us... They could have died out there, and then what?

"It feels like… I dunno, like I'm gonna see everyone again tomorrow. You know? It's like the whole thing was a play." Lovi paced across the room, collapsed on her bed and sighed. "What a day. Feels like we deserve a week off of school for doing that." And in Lovi's opinion, they did deserve it. Lots of people turned out that day, and lots of people got rewards. All of them got a medal, with a few getting special medals for finding the gears. But what good was a medal when she could have something fun like a week off of school? Or the ability to drop one of her bad tests from history?
Maybe Ms. Rey could pull some strings. She and Izzy could always bug her and ask the next time she stopped by the school campus. Which reminded her —
"Hey, were you hurt at all?" Lovi sat up on her elbows and looked across the room to her friend and classmate. "We did fall that one time when the floor collapsed, and we had to fight some stuff… Come here, I can check you over." She felt like she hurt everywhere: her legs for all the walking they did, her upper arms got jerked when the floor collapsed and she sprung too suddenly to rescue herself, her throat still burned from vomiting, her core for staying so tensed up during the whole thing.
And that was just her. Who knows how Izzy held up. Maybe the whole thing was super easy for her, or even more difficult.
And on top of that, now that they did a huge mission together, it felt like they should both be given promotions for it. That's how the Negaverse worked, right? They showed they were good at something, and now they get to move up in the world. Only that wasn't how it worked, because they hadn't received an offer yet. Do they apply for that kind of thing? Stella would know.

Izzy's fingers were knotted together as she walked slowly towards the bed, mind circling around the fact that they'd very narrowly escaped the same horrible fate as those that'd died today. Because to her that was what stuck. Not the overall loss of life--though she'd concede that was awful--but how close they'd come. What if something had happened to Lovi? What if Izzy had had to walk down that hall back to the dorms alone? What if... She blinked at Lovi's question and was instantly grateful for the distraction. "My knee got pretty banged up when we fell, but I don't think I got hurt otherwise." Even still she'd cross to the bed so she could take a seat beside her friend, eager for any sort of attention Lovi might have wanted to extend to her. "How about you?" She pulled her purple beret off, turning it in her hands before setting it aside so she could shrug out of the military jacket and set it aside. "Do you still feel sick?" We could have died. Were these the sort of crazy things that took place in the shadows? How many times now had they brushed death without even knowing it? Violet eyes flicked up from the gloves she was drawing off her fingers, lingering on Lovi's face.

Since they were gathered up and dismissed, Lovi hadn't felt much of anything. Now that they were home, she started to hurt, but the nausea? That faded a while back. "I think I'm fine now. Just super tired, and sorta sore. Kinda like when they'd push us really hard in gym class and make us do those training regiments of a bunch of sit-ups, and push-ups, and chin-ups, and running a mile." Which, now that she was in the Negaverse, Lovi found she had to do a whole lot more of that stuff.
Maybe it's what kept them going through that whole mission. Since Izzy and Lovi aced their gym classes, and Lovi practiced cheerleading outside the school, they each got through the mission in one piece. Maybe all those other lieutenants regularly skipped gym class. Or they just like… Suck at dodgeball or whatever.
It didn't matter. They were here now, and safe, and totally ducked out of triage after their dismissal. That seemed like it was better suited to all the people who got really, seriously hurt. The people who took, like, an axe swing to the chest. Izzy and Lovi just weren't that hurt compared to them.
Which meant Lovi got to practice her first aid skills! With a little pulling and urging, her hands gently tugging at the crook of Izzy's elbow or her mid-calf, Lovi tried to motion for Izzy to get entirely up on the bed and lay flat. At least then she could move Izzy's skirt up a bit and examine her knee better. It looked a little swollen with some red splotches around it, like she went down in the dirt and it scraped off some skin. "Can you bend it back and forth? Like fold it up and extend it?" Lovi looked to her friend, her lips pursed, her breath riding on anticipation. Her hands waited on either side of her friend's knee, measuring the warmth coming off her injury.

Ixzy was trying to just not think too much about what they'd been through or the loss of lifd, or any of it really. She'd survived, Lovi had survived, and their general hadn't been there or at risk. Those were the facts the teen held onto. For her, in all honesty, that was the only thing that really mattered. Short sighted, maybe, but still true. It sucked that other agents had gotten hurt or died, but...she hadn't known them. But not thinking too hard was pretty easy with the warmth of Lovi's hands on her leg and the crook of her elbow urging her closer. Just that soft touch was enough to send a tingling rush acrossed tanned skin and there were goosebumps along her thighs ad Lovi adjusted her skirt to see her knee a little better. Wh?y. She didn't know what it meant. Except... Except maybe she did, because wasn't that exactly how folks in her shows repomdes when someone they liked touched them? Didn't their fingers tingle and their hands shake? Didn't their temperature rise, skin flush, head feel light and dizzy? And she was certainly flushed as Lovi looked up to watch her face. She blinked, realizing her friend had asked her a question, and had to take a moment to try to recall what that'd been. "Um." Oh, right. Her leg. She looked down at were Lovi's hands hovered and gave the leg an experimental bend. "Yeah, I can been it, it just doesn't feel great. But it hurt more walking on it."

"Umm... So that means it's not really, like, injured? I'm not the greatest at the first aid stuff but I remember Coach just told us to put some Neosporin and a bandaid on something if there's just scratches. Then whatever painkiller she kept in the medical tin thing." Izzy could bend it, at least, which was good. She felt pretty warm, though. All of her -- not just her leg. And Lovi's hands felt kinda chilly with it being November and all... Maybe Izzy wouldn't mind if she let her hands sit on her skin for a minute.
"I don't have any painkillers in my room since they like, never let us keep our own stuff. And the nurse would ask why you're hurt, so..." Lovi chewed her lip in thought. Izzy shouldn't have to walk around hurting, especially if she had to disguise it too. But what could Lovi do?
She smiled at once. "Oh! I know! So like, what about a massage? I promise I'll be gentle! I'm actually, like, really good at them. It could help the pain!" And she could keep her hands warm. Win-win! She smiled warmly at Izzy.
It was a little weird to her that the events of the day now felt so distant, like they were all a part of some history book they read together or something. But they did just come from a magical place with all kinds of monsters in it, so maybe it wasn't that weird after all.

Purple eyes had slid back down to her knee, where Lovi's hands hovered close enough for Izzy to feel the chill from them but not close enough to touch. So temptingly close it'd take the smallest twitch of her leg to feel the brush of those slebder fingers, but she was frozen. She'd always known she liked Loving. From the first day they'd met they'd hit it off instantly and had remained close ever since. When their differing schedules had drawn them apart it'd sucked, to the point that Izzy had tried to transfer classes. The the point where she'd eagerly stepped into a place within the Negaverse without really comprehending what exactly that would mean. Lovi was her best friend. But maybe that wasn't all of it. Maybe it wasn't just friendship that Izzy felt for the other teen. And what the ******** did she do about it? She'd been thinking too hard about it when Lovi's offer snapped her right back to the present and any cooling her cheeks might have done in the meantime blazed right back to life. "A-a massage? You want to massage my leg?" What the ever loving ******** was happening right now? "I uh, o-okay. Sure." Did mind reading come with corruption? It couldn't possibly. Could it?

Right. Okay. Leg massage. She wasn't actually really good at these — she'd never done one before — but she'd done plenty of back massages and muscles were muscles so it probably didn't matter that a leg wasn't a back. And she hadn't actually given an injured back a massage either, but… She probably just needed a lighter touch for that? More like petting than massaging, maybe. And who didn't like petting? Just angry cats, that's who.
And Izzy definitely wasn't an angry cat. Lovi draped her fingers loosely over Izzy's skin for a moment while she thought about it, then she pressed lightly into the squishy, fleshy parentheses around the kneecap and worked her fingers in slow, deliberate circles. She moved outward, more toward the sides of the knee, where she gripped and tugged and pushed just lightly enough to make little dimples on her friend. Her knee felt kinda warm, like it was recovering from getting hurt. Were they supposed to ice that? Or wait, maybe that was just a comfort thing. Looking to Izzy, all the first aid she learned just evaporated straight out of her ears and into the air
Or that's how it felt. "You're okay with it, right? It'll help, I promise!" She showed her friend an encouraging smile. That much she did still remember — massages improved circulation and stuff. "Plus, like, nobody's gonna care. We just got back from a long day, and we probably get a little slack here and there for our extracurriculars, and we deserve some time to hang out, you know?" Not like the school asked that much of them after a field trip, and they basically went on a special field trip.
Though now it was beginning to feel like a crazy dream more than anything. She wondered if they'd ever find out what happened with the giant tower after all their hard work. Maybe the higher-ups would know something? If they asked Stella, they might find out, but…
But that could wait. For now, they totally deserved some time together.

Izzy couldn't be further from an angry cat. A happy one, maybe, because she had the distinct urge to curl up close to the other girl and... The soft pressure on her knee made her wince, but it was just the initial ache of the injury being messed with, and as Lovi worked her fingers down the side of her knee she relaxed into it, leaning back against the wall with her hands folded loosely in her lap. She was still blushing, she knew she was but there really wasn't a whole lot she could do about that. Lovi didn't seem to notice, or at least hadn't commented. She blinked as her friend looked up at her. "It's great, thank you." And it was. On top of just, feeling great she trusted Lovi when she said it'd help it heal faster. She wasn't looking forward to hobbling around, so anything that sped her recovery would be great. It was easy to fall back into her own head, her thoughts circling around just asking Lovi how she felt, but she wasn't sure of the answer and that made it kind of terrifying. Not like the s**t they'd faced in the rift, but a whole different kind of fear. "Lovi, do you..." Her eyes were on her hands but she flicked purple eyes up. "Have you ever had a..crush on anyone?"

"Ummmmmm…" Lovi's voice intoned an upswing as she drew out her hum. She paused in her attentions, lip bitten, mouth smashed to the side, as she stared off for recollection. She wasn't sure why she was making such a show of it when she knew the answers. It wasn't like, a huge deal that Izzy was asking either? Must've just been one of her weird impulses. "Yeah, actually. Sometimes I go a long time without one, but then I meet someone that makes me go wow, I wanna be around them, you know?
"I used to really like this guy where I lived before." Lovi pressed her fingers against her friend's knee again, trying to smooth out some of the hurt. Curls boiled over her shoulder while she worked, but she didn't correct them. "I thought we would totally keep in touch after I moved, and then when he graduated, he'd come out here and get me? And then we'd just like, go to New York or San Fransisco or Paris or somewhere amazing like that and make our lives happen like in the movies. And for a while, that's what we kept doing?
"But then I got into Romano's." Lovi switched spots and tested that bulgy part above the knee knob. There was a word for it, she was sure. "And like, after making some friends here, and meeting you, and getting recruited by Ms. Rey, all that stuff just… Stopped mattering? Which sounds super mean, but like, what else am I gonna do? Keep talking to this guy and telling him how excited I am when I'm not? So that crush just kinda faded away. Usually another one happens pretty quickly."
Lovi froze with a wheezy kind of oh, then theatrically collapsed onto the bed next to Izzy. "I totally just made that whole thing about me, I'm super sorry!" She aimed a pouty face up at her friend like an olive branch. "Why'd you ask? Got someone special on your mind? If you do, you totally have to clue me in!" She finished with a smile, giving Izzy a playful pinch on the elbow.

She did know, yes. Which was the entire reason she had broached this very emotionally treacherous topic. Lovi was amazing, she gave Izzy that wow feeling the other girl was talking about. The writing was on the wall, bright and bold, and now it was just a matter of what the ******** Izzy was going to do about it. A nod followed the question but the Izzy didn't say anything as Lovi started in on her story about a a boy from the past. It sounded like a movie plot, in the best way, and it made perfect sense that Lovi would have had some wonderfully romantic relationship in the past. She was pretty, and energetic, and super smart, who wouldn't wouldn't to run away with her to Paris or San Francisco? Drawing her other leg up, Izzy folded her arms around it and lay hr cheek against the uninjured knee, watching Lovi talk through a thin fringe of her own hair as it spilled over her shoulder. Tanned fingers were still working over her knee and now and then something she'd do would stir up the butterflies in her stomach and whip them into a fluttering flurry that keep her cheeks on the pinker side and had her holding her own wrists very tightly. She blinked, as the story came to a bittersweet but ultimately promising end, for Izzy, and she bit her lip as the questions were now directed back at her. "Y-yeah." It was now or never, right? "You already know them." The pinch to her elbow had her lifting a hand t brush purple hair back behind her ear.
