The library was not generally a place for someone like Adrien to be, especially considering he didn't actually go to school anymore; but he'd picked up one singular class on business management to help him run his salon better, and now he was stuck trying to study for a quiz that he was pretty sure he was going to fail.

He really needed to stop stressing over it.

It was late now; he'd overstayed his usual time to be here, mostly because Adrien had gotten sidetracked by everything else in the library - another reason why he really needed to stop coming here - but at the very least, he felt marginally better about the quiz. He stood up, feeling a little achey, and reached for his books, shoving them a little haphazardly into his bag.

The library was large enough to need several floors; Adrien was on the top one, moving through the throngs of people without thinking, his mind on several different things at once, as it usually was. Up ahead, he could see the glint of metal as the elevator doors began to shut, and he hastily darted forward.

"Wait - "

He managed to shove himself in just in time; the doors slid shut with a gentle click, and Adrien, breathing out a sigh of relief, glanced around instinctively.

And froze. Because there was only one other person on the elevator, and it was the person Adrien wanted to see both the least and the most all at once, something inside of him beginning to turn to ice.

"...Yuuri?"

Finals were coming up, and there were a lot of things on Yuuri’s mind. Trying to make sure he did well in his classes was one, but there was also the uncertainty of what would happen after graduation. He couldn’t quite believe Lauri’s suggestion to not worry about it, especially since he couldn’t be sure how aware Lauri was of his situation.

Have I lied? a voice in the back of his head asked, which left Yuuri scowling down at the books he carried in his arms as he made his way onto the elevator with every intent to go home and go to bed.

“Would I even know if you lied to me?” he grumbled under his breath to himself and pressed the button for the lobby. The doors were almost closed when someone pushed through.

...Yuuri?

He froze, arms instinctively gripping tighter to his books as he stared down at them.

It was like stepping back into another time, into another world. Even though it hadn’t been that long ago, Yuuri still felt as though he’d been young and innocent and impressionable. And someone to show him affection even though he only asked for attention.

Not that he was getting much affection even now, but… again, he’d been young and innocent. He knew better. Knew what he was getting himself into. Or at least he hoped he did.

And he was different now. Maybe not substantially, but he was growing.

Yuuri slowly lifted his head, a hand reaching up to brush his somewhat shaggy, uncut hair from his face and behind his ear. He certainly hadn’t expected to see Adrien at the library of all places. He’d had every intention of staying away from Adrien lest he fall back into his old ways. The memories of the times they spent together, how Yuuri felt like someone actually cared about him, how he never wanted things to change… it all came flooding back.

Just as the threat of Wolfeite finding and destroying something or someone he cared about just to make sure he wasn’t distracted from his duty.

“Hi…”

He didn't want this.

Adrien felt as though he'd just been pushed over the edge of a cliff without a parachute; as though he'd just been dunked into an ice cold vat of water without warning. As though he'd just been washed ashore on a desert island with no way off and no water to drink.

And yet, even now, there was a part of Adrien that wanted desperately to reach out to Yuuri. To pull him into his arms and let him rest against his chest and forget that anything awful had ever happened between them, and that Yuuri hadn't dumped him unceremoniously in a way that still hurt his heart badly enough that wasn't yet recovered from it.

It felt simultaneously like a lifetime ago and just yesterday. Adrien could feel the panic beginning to rise in his throat, the hand that was not currently resting on the strap of his shoulder bag beginning to tremble. He closed his fingers into a fist, trying to stop the movement, trying to keep any sort of weakness or discomfort or sadness to show on his face, but he had always been an open and expressive person.

He'd always been the sort to wear his heart on his sleeve.

Do you still love me?

He was not - not going to ask that question. Now, or ever. Adrien cleared his throat.

"Hi," he said, and his voice didn't waver so much as it felt stiff and awkward in his own mouth, the singular word thick. "Are you, uh..."

For once, the jabbering volley of words didn't seem to want to come out properly. Adrien forced his tongue to work and continued, "Are you here to study for class? I forgot you went here - " A lie, if ever there was one. " - and I mean, I was just here for a class, and - "

The elevator gave an ominous shudder - and then stopped altogether.

He didn’t want to talk. He didn’t want to have a conversation with Adrien. He wanted to leave. He would get out as soon as the elevator stopped, and he would never look back.

Adrien was talking, his words rambling and stumbling over himself. Yuuri squeezed his eyes shut, head turned away from Adrien. Maybe if he couldn’t see him, he wouldn’t really be there.

But fate wasn’t so kind.

The elevator shook and stopped. Yuuri kept his eyes closed, waiting for the doors to open, waiting to hear them sliding back and giving him a way to escape. But nothing happened.

Yuuri’s arms held tighter to his books, he wasn’t breathing, he was just waiting and hoping and…

Still nothing.

Finally he opened his eyes to glare at the panel of buttons. He took a step forward and, after adjusting his books in his arms, reached out to press one of the buttons.

Nothing.

He pressed another.

Nothing.

The open door.

Nothing.

Alarm.

Nothing.

He had his cell phone. He would just call someone to come get him. He knew at least one surly brunet who would surely come to his aid if he asked.

Out of his pocket he pulled the phone, resolutely keeping his eyes away from Adrien as he stood too close nearby.

An incredulous breath left him as he stared down at the screen.

No signal.

This was not supposed to happen.

They were not supposed to be stuck in a damn elevator together, like some sort of twisted, messed up chick flick movie where they would have some sort of romantic making up and then spend the rest of the time talking dreamily about just how much they had missed each other and how love fixed all.

No, thought Adrien vehemently, as his stomach dropped to the floor with almost as much stuttering weight as the elevator. Why me? Why did this have to happen to me? Why did this have to happen to me and to him together, now, of all times and in all places?

He wanted desperately to be out of this elevator. His eyes moved instinctively to watch as Yuuri jabbed at a few buttons, to no effect, and that felt like a mistake too, because he didn't want to look at Yuuri, or see that face he had once felt so overjoyed to see and now could notice that Yuuri kept his eyes resolutely averted.

This was not how it was supposed to be.

Adrien fished out his own phone, finger sliding along the unlock bar. He had approximately half a bar of signal - and as he watched, it faded away and was immediately replaced by a traitorous, aggravating bar of No Signal flashing at him like it was mocking him.

Adrien felt his fingers curl around his phone, so tightly it felt as though the smooth edges of the case were crushing into his skin.

"So," he said, and hoped very hard the tremor he could hear was just in his own head and not actually audible. "This is - there has to be a way out, we'll figure this out - you or I will figure something out," he corrected, with too much haste, his heart tripping over itself.

"Um." Adrien's mind cast around wildly for ideas. "Uh. Could we like...is there a way to pry the doors open? Or...or something?"
