Altair breathed out mist as the cold air condensed infront of him. He shoved his hands deep in his pockets trying to warm his fingertips. It was a cold brisk morning, he didn’t know why he was awake this early let alone why he had decided to leave the warmth of his bed. Here he was on the edge of the woods freezing. Waiting for someone he had never met before. Stupid group projects. Sure maybe it was his fault that they put it off so long. It was last minute the day it was due and they hadn’t done anything. Luckily photography class wasn’t THAT big of a deal and how hard could taking a meaningful picture take? The problem was it had to be meaningful to the both of them, which required actually getting to know someone.
Altair didn’t always have a problem meeting new people, he was just extremely particular in WHAT people he would associate with. After all he didn’t think he was someone good to be around the faint of heart. Altair was constantly fascinated by the dark and macabre, he would take every opportunity to scare someone he could. It was always very amusing to watch people freak out over literally nothing. However this did make it hard to retain friends, since most people he met were not super fond of being scared all the time. “Where is that damned kid, keeping me waiting out here in the cold like this. I’m going to get him back for this good.” He glared off into the distance slowly becoming more sure he was freezing to death.

L woke slowly in the comfort of his bed, the alarm clock blared next to him as he reached his hand out to quiet it for perhaps the tenth time. Why was that damned thing even going off so early? He didn’t have class for HOURS, he certainly had a while before he had to be awake and be anywhere. Suddenly the reason for sai alarm came flooding back into his brain quickly like a tidal wave hitting shore. “OH s**t” his eyes flew open throwing his blankets off of him and practically jumping out of bed. He grimaced his feet hit the cold floor below. He fumbled around on his desk knocking things off in his search when his fingers ran over the smooth round surface of the sight charm he had recently gotten. He slipped it around his neck and made quick work of getting ready.
Slinging his bag over his shoulder he ran full sprint out of the dorm and down toward the edge of the forest where he was supposed to meet his partner. Once he could see the other in the distance he raised a hand in a wave, before stopping throwing his hands on his knees and breathing heavily. He wheezed in cold air as he attempted to get his breath but at least he was awake now. He bashfully approached his partner looking down guiltily knowing exactly what the glare he was receiving was for.

Altair watched as a figure ran up through the fog, and chuckled as the keeled over to catch their breath. “Do you have any idea of how long i’ve been waiting?” He eyed the nightmare in front of him up and down. “It’s cold and we better just get this over with so quickly tell me some things about you, I’ll tell you things about me SURELY there will be SOMETHING on that list that matches we can take a picture and be done with it.” Altair stood there looking the other up and down, “well im waiting?” L fumbled in his bag looking for something and Altair raised an eyebrow at him. “You didn’t have to write a list down you know. It’s not THAT big of a deal.” He tried to see what the other was pulling out of his bag and raised an eyebrow at what appeared to be a tablet with a pen. “You know were supposed to take pictures with cameras right? You’re not drawing. GREAT i’ve got a half-witt partner what could be better?” He glared as L started to scribble on the tablet seeming to ignore EVERYTHING that Altair was saying.
Stomping a foot on the ground Altair growled “okay i’ll go first” he said through his teeth. “I like bugs, particularly spiders. I like snakes, cobwebs, dark spaces like attics, graveyards, creepy trees, dead flowers, poisonous mushrooms. UHH, coffee black, scary stories, fires, mysterious deaths, paranormal activity.” He nodded as if checking things off a list. He then put his hands on his hips waiting for the others response. “Did you even hear me?”

L ofcourse had heard him, a matter of fact his hearing was quite good. He heard every sigh, chuckle , growl that the other had let out. That didn’t change the fact that no matter how irritated the other got L could not and would not speak a word. L was used to people that didn’t understand at first though so he honestly tried to cut the guy some slack. He opened his bag and shuffled through grabbing his tablet and pen. And he began to write. “My name is L. I am mute. Please be patient.” He went to show Altrair but at this point altair was already rambling off his incredibly dark and twisted list of likes. ‘Is this guy serious?’ Perhaps he got confused and thought the goal was to take pictures of their greatest fears. L turned his tablet around so that Altair could read it, and rather than the normal relief that he would see cross peoples faces upon being shown this pretty basic message Altair seemed to be more annoyed.
Waving his hand over the screen to clear it he began to write again. “Likes, not fears. Pictures of likes.” Again he showed this to altair and was met with eye rolling and heavy sighing. Clearing the screen he again wrote “Like: Chocolate, Blankets, Books, Friends, Coffee, Cake” Then showing it to Altair he watched as the others eyes scanned the tablet and looked up at him with a look of disbelief. L turned the tablet back around assuming he must have wrote something wrong, but reading it over again he wasn’t sure why the look.

Altair finally stopped talking for a second to read L’s tablet and he rolled his eyes ‘ofcourse I got a mute dumb partner thanks alot teacher’ in the defense of the teacher it wasn’t their fault. The kids got to pick their own partners and since Altair had no friends in that class the kids quickly pared up turning their desks to one another leaving altair and L the only two without a partner. Thus making them by default each others partners for this assignment, “I know that, look you like what you like, I like what I like. Just because i’m not boring and plain doesn't mean I can’t like something else. “ When L showed him his list of likes he at first smirked knowing that L was just as plain and normal as everyone else he had met despite his unique appearance. Then his eyes hovered on one word and his jaw almost dropped. ‘Coffee’ a simple enough thing but it was something right.
Altair grabbed L’s arm and pulled him along with him, dragging him in the direction of the cafeteria. L clutched the tablet to his chest desperately trying to not drop it as he was being pulled across the wet grass. “One coffee please” Altair chirped to the very tired cafeteria worker who looked like there was no way they wanted to be awake this early. She handed him a mug “creamer and sugar is over there, don’t drink too much it will stunt your growth.” Altair scoffed before taking the coffee and setting it on a lunch table in front of him. “There take a picture of that.” He pulled out his camera and made sure it was in focus, L did the same. Once the picture was taken Altair picked it up and made quick work of drinking it. “Well I can’t say it was a pleasure meeting you, but at least it’s done.
