Profile:

She used to be whole. An expensive and well made creation of delicate porcelain and only the best synthetic furs and hair. She was a luxury paid for by a wealthy grandfather to be an Academy graduation gift for his only granddaughter, a girl enamored with classical dance. Nell came when the girl was still only a Freshling, and the family connection was made with the three of them. Nell was beyond pleased when Grandfather sent her to Grendel to further what Bliss had already programmed her with as far as classical dance and teaching it.

By the time Nell came back, the little girl had grown up and decided she wasn't that interested in classical dance after all.

"Well, my precious Nell, I guess it's just you and me, then." Grandfather had smiled and patted the Doll on the head. "Would you dance for me, dear?"

And so she danced. He had a small stage built for her with a glass partition and spot lights, everything a professional dancer would need. Nell danced for Grandfather for years, whenever he wanted. He filled the room with smaller clockwork dolls that danced when the music turned on but none of them were like her. None of them moved as fluidly or were able to change their footwork to surprise their only viewer. She lived for those moments when Grandfather would smile and clap his hands with pleasure.

But then Grandfather stopped coming. The house was quiet without her music playing, without the clockwork dolls whirring and clicking their way through their dances. Days went by that way, nothing changed except the natural light coming in through the windows.

"Grandfather?" she called. There was no answer. Standing gracefully, Nell moved to the glass partition and placed her hands upon it. She peered downward; Grandfather had built the stage rather high, and there was no way for her to get down. There had been no point. Grandfather would always send her tea up and Nell was happy performing for him. But now...

"I must break the glass," she said against the clear pane. There was no one at the bottom to catch her when she fell, but she needed out now. She needed to know what had happened to Grandfather. It was this or go on standby. Rapping her knuckles on the glass made it clear that she would never break it with her own fists. Her chair. The chair she sat in when Grandfather slept.

Moving over to it, she tested its weight and found it to be heavy. She hoped it was heavy enough. Nell dragged the chair closer to the pane of glass before trying to pick it up. She was delicate but not without strength as she hefted the chair up and swung it against the glass. The pane shattered and if she hadn't let go of the chair, Nell would have gone over the edge along with it and the shards.

Which, now that she had had a chance to think about it, might not have been the worst outcome. Because now she had to figure out a way down. She looked around her stage but Grandfather had left it bare. No curtains, no miscellaneous costumes. Just herself and her chair which now lay in pieces on the floor below. And the more she wracked her brain for solutions, the more she came to realize there was only one way down now. She knelt near the edge and brushed away glass to make a space for her lithe body. Swinging her legs over, Nell looked down one more time before pushing herself free from the stage.

There was a moment where everything stood still and she was suspended in air. It almost felt like part of a dance, the culmination of a dramatic scene where the bird is set free to fly as she would...but reality and the floor came crashing in all too soon.

Nell hit the floor with a wrenching cracking noise that made her cringe. Please, oh, please let my legs be in one piece, she begged silently of anyone who would hear such a prayer. She was almost afraid to move, to look and find out. But she had to. She tested her toes first, they all seemed to be in order. Bent her knees and let out a breath that at least they worked. Cracks could be fixed. Sitting up, she winced as she looked at the cracks and the pieces of porcelain that littered the floor around her. At least she was mostly in one piece. All her joints seemed to be in working order. It would be okay. Grandfather would get her fixed, she was sure of it.
