As Halloween draws near, a good number of the shops at the local mall have decided to take part in the festivities by handing out candy bars and bite-sized goodies to all of the customers who stop by. You score a fair amount of sweets while you're out and about.

After you consume a handful of them, though, you discover you don't feel.. quite right. You can't put your finger on why you don't feel right but soon the side effects from your candy munching come to light. When you sweat, your perspiration is noticeably brown and smells sickeningly sweet... almost like chocolate. In fact, your natural scent has seemed to take on a more sweet approach, as if you were a walking candy bar yourself. You've got no clue which shop handed out the cursed candy but the saccharine effect on you lasts for an entire day, until the candy has made it out of your system.

Bernard was lazily wandering around the shops, looking at the various Halloween decorations. Unfortunately, since it was so late in the month, most of them had been cleared out, but he still got to see some interesting stuff, especially the food ideas that some of the bakeries and cafes had come up with. Even the local mall had seemed to be in full swing with decorations hanging all about its sides and even an inflatable monster on the roof of it. Unfortunately, he could only go around the shops that were on the outside, as he didn’t want to get kicked out by going in, but he still got to see quite a bit.

As he was passing by one food shop though, a little kid was being dragged out by their parent and the child dropped some of the sweets on the sidewalk. Although Bernard wasn’t too into sweets, unless it was a subtle sweetness, he was curious as to how they tasted, and so took one of the candies and gobbled it up before one of the vendors came out to yell at him to make him run away.

Unfortunately for him, the sweet tasted awful! He couldn’t understand how humans liked these things! It would forever be a mystery to him!

After all of that wandering though, he had decided it was time to head home and went in the direction of his house. After a bit of walking though, a group of kids came upon him and started hugging him and telling him that he smelled… sweet. He managed to get away, thanks in part to his heaviness, but only managed to make it a short distance before he needed to take a breath. He sniffed himself a little and realized that he was smelling just like that candy he had tasted! Gross!

How could this possibly happen to a cat like himself? He couldn’t understand it but made a silent vow that he was never going to eat any human candy ever again. Bakery items were a different story though.

He managed to make it home, only after dodging a pack of street dogs and more children who seemed to be attracted to the smell of sweets and squeezed through the cat door. Once he knew he was safe, he sighed and went to look for the butler of the house. Once he found the gentleman, Bernard circled around his legs, meowing to get the other’s attention. The butler bent down to pet Bernard but smelled how the cat did. “Sir Bernard, did we roll in a bag of candy today?” The Butler asked as he picked the cat up to give him a bath. Bernard liked baths, so he purred as he was bathed, but unfortunately even that didn’t seem to get rid of the smell, and the Butler had to tell Bernard’s owners that he was going to smell for a bit, though it should go away sometime soon.

But that meant that Bernard couldn’t sleep in their bed for the night, which was just awful. This was a purely horrible experience that Bernard never wanted to endure again!
