Kalina was growing excited waiting for Zac to arrive. She had her electric kettle nice and hot, with an array of tea for his enjoyment. Her violin was sitting on the table, ready and waiting. She decided to use her traditional one today, and save the electric model for their next practice session. If Zac was having issues with his finger pressure, it seemed much more productive to be using a traditional, wooden violin for starters.

It was always better to get the hard stuff out of the way first, after all.

She watched as her cats ambled around the room, amusing themselves with a new toy that she had brought home the other night. They were cute. And the sight of them always made her smile, though she had to wonder what it might be like living with one of the cats that did talk. One of the corrupted guardians that watched over the senshi...it might be fun.

Or annoying. Perhaps Zac would know where she could find one.

Finally she glanced at her phone, scrolling back through her text messages with the blue haired male. He had said he would be here at twelve thirty, and the clock on her phone showed that it was twelve thirty now...so...he should be walking through the door at any moment. She had said to just come inside, after all.

Finally she managed to grab on of the cats, though not before the other knocked over a large stack of books and the large cat tower she had bought for the two trouble makers, and unluckily for her, the tower ended up falling on top of her and she again lost her grip on the cat.

He liked to be early, he wasn’t always successful at this though. Mostly because this time he’d stopped and gotten, well… drinks. Drinks and pastries. He was ridiculously nervous, and kept telling himself that he was a god damned General Sovereign. In response his brain kept responding that this had nothing whatsoever to do with the Negaverse, it was civilian affairs and he was quite possibly the absolute worst at civilian life.

It was so much harder to deal with people when there weren’t clear cut ‘sides’ and, there weren’t uniforms and people so often did ridiculous awful things like… crying or wanting to exchange phone numbers and do ‘small talk’.

He was overthinking it. All of it, because he wasn’t sure he’d picked the right anything to bring, besides himself.

He knocked. She said he could come in but he knocked all the same. It was just polite. She had no idea what rank he was, as far as he could tell, and to be perfectly honest he had absolutely no intention of enlightening her. That had, after all too high a risk of changing whatever dynamic they might have, without rank to make her second guess what she had to say.

“H-hello?” He said, and tried to act as though the hesitation had been the tickle of a cough in his throat, not the prospect of forging relationships with new people, since so many old ones were gone.

“It’s me... I, brought, uh… well I brought chai, and, some kind of spiced apple caramel thing, and um… baked goods.”

Well. s**t.

Of course he had to come now. And of course he wouldn’t open the door…and of course she was in the terrible position of being stuck under a really heavy cat tree. How had that furry a*****e managed to even push it over?

“Yeah! Come in Zac! The door’s open!” Kalina called back, while trying to crawl her way out from under the contraption. The edge of her shirt got stuck on one of the many branches of the tower and she sighed heavily. “Spiced apple caramel things sound…utterly amazing…could you maybe help me? I’m…I’m a little stuck at the moment.”

And the house was a mess. Perhaps she should have put the cats in her bedroom…but knowing them…well.

Well she might not have had a bedroom left after they were done.

“Also I’m sorry for the mess! The cats decided to be the little devils that they are but…I mean…they’re still cute so…look at them instead of all the things that just fell over. Including me. When you help me up.”

She wriggled again, struggling to free her shirt and finally gave up, flinging he arms out to her sides.

“Or…better yet. Just leave me alone to die.”

He hesitated, and then started shifting the drinks and baked goods into one arm so that he –could- open the door. Talk about tactical misjudgment. Terrible, awful mistake not to have thought about the fact she might have needed him to open the door.

He managed to get a hand free and opened it, only to stop dead for a moment, assessing the mess.

“Ah, let me um….”

He put down the tray of drinks carefully first, juggling the pastries as they tried to tip to one side from the miss matched weights inside.
He caught it, set it down with minimal, he hoped, incident to anything inside that had frosting and then hurried over to help her.

As a civilian, his hand looked like a hand again, though compared to the one that was honestly flesh and blood it was perhaps eerily unmarked.
He shifted till he got a good grip on the tower and carefully lifted it with a small ‘oof’.

“Sturdy” He remarked.

“Ah, what are the cats um, names?” He asked curiously. He glanced for the cats with a curiously nervous air. And they are… definitely the non talking kind, right?”

“Ah… when you’re able to stand, the um… the apple spiced caramel is the one with the, well it has an apple on it, and it smells like cider.”

He was rambling.

Kalina scrambled out from under the tower and gave a sheepish grin. “Thanks. Didn’t mean to leave you out there with your hands full but my shirt got stuck…” She grinned again, this time more excitedly. “I’m glad you made it. And that you brought snacks. I have the water nice and hot for tea for you, since I know you said that you liked it, and I practically bought out this little tea shop in the mall? They had so many great sounding flavors so…there’s about two dozen choices, all loose leaf, but I got some really cute strainers. There’s a sloth, and a panda, and my personal favorite…”

She moved towards the table and produced a rubber duck with a tea strainer on the bottom. “It floats in the tea, and I think it is just…perfect.

If he was rambling, so was she, though she eyed the apple pastry and then reached out and opened the box, taking one and flopping down on the couch, nodding happily. “Oh Zac, this is amazing. You have great tastes. But, did you bring your violin? I hope so.”

Since that was the whole point to this meeting.

“Er, yes, it’s in my… He shifted and the bag slung across his torso slid into view. An old messenger bag with the black case sticking out from under the soft flap.
She might miss the glance when she said ‘panda’ strainer, but he let himself grin when she showed off the duck.

“You went all in, have you, brewed tea before?” his tone was maybe a little cautious. But if she’d gone to the tea shop he thought she meant they were at least good about telling you brewing and steeping times.

He swung the bag off his shoulder and set it down to pull his case out, set it down and opened the case to pull out a blue stained classic wood violin.

“I’m still a little afraid I’ll break it, though I’m assured my hand isn’t… unusual, it’s just metal.” He said and carefully picked it up. The electric violin he’d been playing last time left behind apparently in deference to a clear favorite.

“I mean, I’ve drank tea before, but normally either I get someone else to actually brew it, or if I’m feeling daring, I’ll use a teabag but. I’ve never really experimented with loose leaf, but I’m excited to see what happens.”

The guy at the shop had said a lot of different things about brew times and temperatures but…she wasn’t really sure that it could matter all that much…it was still going to be hot leaf water no matter how you looked at it, so why should she bother actually following the directions?

If she messed up too badly…she could just ask the cook to brew them some the right way. Shawna could make anything taste good after all.

“Oh! It’s blue. Heck. I love that!” She reached out and touched the smooth wood of the instrument and nodded. “It’s beautiful. And it matches you pretty well, Zac. Methinks you might be a little conceited?” Her tone was teasing, but she listened to his concerns about the hand.

“Let me feel it. Does it feel like metal when you’re like this? Because if you don’t like…cut paper with your fancy robot hand…then I can’t really see you doing any damage to the strings…”

“Well… It was the first thing I really saved for, too ages.” He gently turned the violin for her to examine. Clearly fond of it. “So… if it matches that’s because It runs to my taste, and I liked the way it sounded when I played it.” He arched a lofty eyebrow. He hesitated then, at her questions about the metal hand before gently offering her his hand.

“Here.” He said, clearly a little reluctant, just a little. He had ideas about personal space, and he thought the might be worse since his… return.

“It… I can feel with it, like a normal hand. But it’s hard not to think about what it is. I’m afraid to scratch it or, I don’t know.” He sighed. “I’m probably more hung up on the hand than… the violin.”

Kalina nodded, eyes flickering back to the blue stained violin for a moment. “I was just teasing. I think it’s neat, and I might have to go and get myself one that’s colored too, but I’ve always liked just how warm the colors of violins are…they’ve always seemed so…inviting.”

The girl watched him for a moment and then took the hand, tentatively poking at it and wrinkling her nose. “That…is so strange. And it’s not even like you’re wearing a glove or anything, it’s literally…how the heck does it do that? It looks perfect but it’s still…you know. Mr. Metal hand. No wonder you’re having issues.”

She drew her hand away and scratched at her head, marveling at the magic that made this possible.

“Well…I can really see why you’re worried then. Did you think of maybe getting a glove? Something that would be easier to…but that wouldn’t work out so well either…”

Kalina shrugged. “Maybe…we could ask whoever made you the hand to see if they can make…just…not to sound strange but like…a flesh…glove? For when you’re playing? No, no that sounds really strange, now that I’ve said it out loud…but who even did this? And how did they do it? It’s kind of amazing…and the fact that you can feel things with it? Like…”

She poked it again, watching him. “You can feel that?”

“Mauvians.” He said quietly. “They made it, they have some talent I admit, but I have no idea if they could do that or not. I may have to ask.” He tipped his head thoughtful. “They did clever things with the crystal, they, implanted one in the arm, but all it can do is illusions.”

He flexed his fingers in response to her touch.

“I can feel it, it’s oddly normal I admit.” He said and shrugged gently.

“I’d have to ask if they could do a skin that wouldn’t impare that if I wanted to play.
He laughed sudenly and quietly. “This conversation makes me feel like a bond villian, I should have adopted a fluffy white cat, I could sit at home and pretend to be ‘Doctor Claw.”

He grimaced and then added.
“Or I could feel like I’m dating myself terribly by saying that.”

He quickly changed the subject and pushed his hair back off his face and tapped a finger lightly beside one eye.

“They… did that too.” He admitted. The eye was just a little off from what was apparently the natural one. Not badly, but enough to notice if you knew to look for the difference in color.

Mauvians...she had a feeling that she should know what that word meant, but honestly, Kalina didn’t have much of a clue, but she nodded as though she did. “I mean, they made it look really good. And you said there’s a crystal in there? That’s cool! Especially if it can do illusions.” She listened to him and then grinned, holding up a finger and going to grab one of her cats--not fluffy and not pure white, but it was good enough for the joke, she thought.

“There you are, Zac. Doctor Claw forever.” She shrugged and grinned. “I won’t lie, I think of the guy from Inspector Gadget more than a Bond villain, but I think they both work pretty well for this situation.”

He pointed to his eye and she paused, squinting and looking as closely as she could, nodding slowly. “...Does your fancy robot eye do anything? Or is it just fancy and robotic and makes you look like you have something just slightly off with them?”

Perhaps he was like Sarah Brightman in that one movie where she could record and play back images with her eyes. That would be…

That would be really cool, actually.

“So...What happened that you had to become a cyborg anyway? Did you get into a really bad fight or something?” She paused and looked at him, frowning slightly. “...Should I be worried?”

“To the best of my experience so far, it gives me occasional terrible headaches.” He admitted.

“And as for why I’m like this; well - ” He trailed off, and stroked the cat if it would allow after letting it smell both his hands.

“I’ll be perfectly honest, I don’t remember.” He said and made a face.
“I…” He started and stopped again. “I don’t remember, I know what they told me, there was a building and…” He took a breath and let it out moving suddenly to grab his own drink and press it gently between his hands.

“Once I learn I’ll tell you.” He said trying to sound self assured.

Kalina watched him, and watched how her dumb little cat began to purr and press against the male. At least it wasn’t being a brat today, that was good.

Her eyes narrowed slightly when he said that he didn’t remember, and finally she rested a hand on his shoulder. “Heck, Zac. You could have told me to shut up and that it was none of my business. I didn’t mean to bring up anything…bad or torment you or anything like that. I was just curious. And worried about if I should watch out for anyone when I’m rampaging around at night like an escapee from Seaworld.”

She was trying to change the subject, wanting to move on to an easier topic, and honestly was feeling more than a little bad for even asking…but it made sense to ask! He was obviously high ranking, clearly he would have enemies…shouldn’t she have asked to keep herself safe?

…It only made sense…kind of.

She hoped.

“Anyway! So the…mauvians…might be able to make you something so the illusion is more than just metal, that’s great…do…ah. You want to try playing! It might…help take your mind off of…things.”

“I’m, unfortunately serious though. I honestly don’t remember.” He said with a small, if forced smile.
“I just, I hate not being able to remember. I… it's a long story, call it a uh… trigger I suppose.” He shrugged.
“If I thought you’d meant harm in asking, I’d not have answered though. Let’s… call that our secret though. Alright? The fact I don’t remember I mean.”
He had reasons to ask that, and he wasn’t entirely sure why he told HER, maybe because she was so new that it couldn’t have been her, or her working with anyone.

“I will tell you if I learn who was part of this though.” He flexed his fingers. “I mean, besides the obvious warnings, beware royal senshi.” He chuckled softly. “And the knights, they weren’t especially organized when I left, but seeing as I know some of them were once officers, I’ll consider them a risk.”

Kalina grinned at the idea of sharing a secret. It was fun. The idea of having something that was known just between the two of them was…interesting. Exhilarating. “Secret knowledge sounds great to me, Zac. I mean, it’s not as though I have anyone to tell, but damn. You sure know how to make someone feel important!”

She nodded at his warnings and gently picked up her violin, running the bow along one of the strings to produce a clear note before sighing.

“So…just…what are you? Are you a general? And just what is a ‘Royal Senshi?’ it sounds like something you’d find at a farmers market…or perhaps that’s royal jelly…”

Actually, she was pretty sure she had some of that for her hair…but…that wasn’t the point.

“You’re just…kind of stupidly strong? And I guess I’m curious. And like I said before, I don’t really get out much. Haumea is…pretty much the only person I know, besides you now.”
