Quote: You have a near miss that almost kills you (maybe you almost got hit by a car, the plane you were supposed to go on ended up crashing, you narrowly dodged a falling piano, etc) and you're thanking your lucky stars that you're alive...until you realize that no matter who you talk to, no one responds to you. Strangers don't hear you on the street, friends don't return texts or calls and no one answers the door when you knock. It's almost like you're a ghost….for the next twenty-four hours, you appear invisible to every other person on the planet but then suddenly, out of the blue, it's like nothing has changed and none of your friends know what you're talking about when you explain the odd phenomenon. Was it all a dream? He had been on his phone when it happened.
Long legs were carrying him across the DCU campus, towards where he had parked his car earlier in the day. Classes were back in swing and while he rarely ever showed up, he'd gotten no less than nineteen text messages from Sophie reminding him about the big test he had in one of his classes and as much as it would be easier to ignore the texts...she had nagged him enough to get him out of bed and onto campus.
But, as he was running late, like usual, it meant he had to park in the ******** boonies of the school parking lots and that ultimately required making use of his long legs and his history with track to jog across campus and get to class just before the door was locked.
Once that'd been all said and done, he'd found a text message from the chick he picked up at a frat party. They were confirming meeting up later and he was, for once, responding in a timely manner.
[To Cassie: Still DTF later?]
It was a little crude, a bit blunt, but that was just how he rolled. It did however almost have him walking in front of a car that'd been backing out and not paying attention to the giant behind their vehicle. The slap to their trunk had them stopping, just shy of hitting him, so he hadn't gotten hurt but almost.beejoux days late with starbucks i guess

Cassie was sitting at the kitchen table in her brother's house with a sandwich sitting half eaten in front of her and her phone propped up against her glass of juice, a compilation video of pro surfers catching gnarly waves playing on youtube. She was only half paying attention to it, trying to figure out what she was going to do with herself for the rest of the day--with the rest of her life. She'd been crashing with Cas and Micheal since she'd gotten out of the hospital and though there'd been nothing from either of them to suggest she'd outlived her welcome there, and she enjoyed the renewed closeness with her twin after a year and some change away, she felt restless. Like there was something she should be doing, but didn't have a clue what that something was. Getting out on her own again might not fix that, but staying here wouldn't either... Her phone buzzed, a message flashing across the top of the video indicating she had a text message, and Cassie reached out to check it. Austin. The tall hotty from the frat party she'd crashed. What a perfect distraction. There'd been talk of a possible hook up, but she hadn't heard from him since earlier that morning. A small, satisfied little smile slid across her lips as she typed out a quick reply to him. [ To Austin: Time and place? ]

He had stuffed his large frame into his relatively small car when he'd gotten the text back. His wrist was sore from where he'd smacked the back of the car window with a little too much force but all in all he was fine and there was a good prospect of doing something fun in the evening.
Cassie's text brought a grin to his face even as he slid his keys into the ignition and pushed in the clutch when he turned his car on.
[To Cassie: Sooner rather than later]
He hit send, then thought about it some before he was typing a second message to her.
[To Cassie: My place in like an hour?]
It was short notice and she didn't know where he lived but he was itching for some sort of distraction or entertainment while his heart was still feeding his body with some adrenaline from the near miss.
While he waited for her text, he pulled out of the parking lot.

After she'd sent the text she'd set the phone aside so she could finish her sandwich, assuming Austin would get right back to her, but it didn't buzz again while she was eating, now while she washed her plate and glass and set them in the drying rack beside the sink. There was no text as she made her way to the bathroom to take a quick shower, and no missed texts when she stepped out again after. Now she was starting to get annoyed, wondering what could have happened that'd prevent him from answering, or if he'd changed his mind or something else had come up that he needed to do instead. Which was fine, but if he'd changed his mind he could have at least said something. Huffing, Cassie tried not to speculate much on what might have caused the delay in response. She didn't know, and it didn't do to assume. But she was still annoyed. Because he wasn't the only one who could have used a distraction.

Austin attempted to stop at a coffeeshop's drive thru, but despite him sitting at the box for several minutes, no voice came over the overcom and when he pulled to the window, no one bothered to open it and say anything to him. It was like they were completely oblivious to the fact that he was there.
Eventually, he gave up and just went home.
His car was parked and he let himself into the basement apartment before he checked his phone. Twenty minutes had passed and Cassie hadn't responded which he thought was...weird considering she'd replied pretty quickly before.
Irritated he tried to text her again.
[To Cassie: So is that a no...?]
Maybe she had thrown her phone across the room for some reason or another. Still, he was getting restless when he toed his shoes off and threw himself on his bed, waiting for her to respond.

The radio silence continued one for the rest of the night. At a certain point Cassie had stopped checking her phone in an expectant sort of way. Something had clearly come up for Austin, and either he'd get back to her tonight or he wouldn't, but she wasn't going to stare at her phone the rest of the night. Instead she'd dressed comfortably and gone out for a quick stroll into town to pick up a couple of applications from a sporting goods store and a Surf shop. Putting out employment feelers, but mostly killing time.

At some point when Cassie refused to text him back, he'd tried someone else and had gotten zero response from the other girl(s). He'd even attempted to hit up a racing buddy to see if they wanted to meet up for a race or talk cars or something.
Not a single person got back to him.
"What the ********," Austin grumbled tossing his phone to the side, the device landing on his bed somewhere before he decided that maybe he'd ******** off on his laptop or play a game or something.
Then, maybe if he wasn't waiting for a text someone he'd get one.
But based on the radio silence, everyone thought he wasn't worth the time.
What the ******** ever.

"Well I guess something came up." It was said with a sigh as Cassie flopped back on her bed and tossed her phone on the nightstand, grabbing for the Roku remote. Looked like she had another night in of catching up on shows she'd missed while she'd been out in the country. She'd give Austin a poke tomorrow, see what that whole thing had been about.
