Quote:
You're visiting a friend or family member in the hospital and while walking down the hall, the fluorescent lights flicker, long enough for you to notice an eerie figure standing at the end of the empty hallway. Another flicker and the shadow grows closer - it's a deranged looking person, hair unkempt and eyes sunken into their sockets. A third flicker and the being is only yards away from you now, more grotesque in appearance than ever. A fourth flicker and…the lights return to normal, the hallway just as empty as it was when you originally turned to walk down it. Was it all an illusion? Maybe you're a little extra exhausted? Whatever the case may be, walking down the hallway you can't help but notice a putrid smell stinging your nostrils until you manage to turn the corner…

Myles hurting himself was not uncommon, but Myles falling down a flight of stairs and not being able to put weight on his foot was. Jeremy had found him sitting on the steps of the apartment, resting his forehead on his knees and had rushed to his side immediately, expecting the worst.

...Myles had fallen asleep sitting there while he waited for Jeremy to come home.

He wanted to be mad, wanted to fuss at his brother for not calling, but he was too good at playing detective not to see the way Myles clutched a shattered phone tightly to his stomach, as if to hide it from his brother. It was the second he'd broken this year, and the fifth in two years, and Jeremy had scolded him harshly after the last one. He softened, because he could see how his brother seemed more worried about that than he did his own health.

It didn't matter. It was just a phone, but to Myles it was significantly more than that: it was a representation of failure and...hell, it wasn't like he was being reckless. He was just walking. Jeremy had seen him walk right into a door, trip right over his own two feet.

It took Myles half a second to hurt himself, no matter how hard he tried to stay on top of things.

Jeremy had just worked a double shift and was looking forward to going home and sleeping, but he couldn't, not when his brother was involved. Hell, probably not even if a stranger was involved. He just sighed, wrapped his arm around his brother, and helped him shuffle to the car. Myles insisted he was fine, but Jeremy wasn't going to take chances. He drove to the gas station and bought a bag of frozen peas to press on the ankle, but at the sound of his growling stomach in tandem with his brother's, they'd stopped for fast food on the way to the hospital.

The trip had been uneventful, for the most part--Myles was easy to get talking, and it was a good distraction for Jeremy. He'd had a bad day, a long day, but hearing his brother chatter about some fat dog he'd seen, or some new project he was working on, or try to explain the plot of a television show Jeremy had no prior context of was all good enough for him.

Though, it was unarguably better to hear that Myles had simply twisted his ankle and had a bad bruise. No broken bones, no sprains. Just a week or two of taking it easy. A prognosis Jeremy aspired to obtain, himself. He was stifling a yawn when he helped Myles into the elevator; Myles' ankle was in a brace and he was resting against his brother. The yawn was contagious; they were both yawning as a small group of people shuffled out of the elevator. It was empty when they stepped in, but Jeremy could have sworn he heard the shuffle of feet down the hallway. He pressed the 'door open' button as he waited, reaching a hand up to rub at his face tiredly.

Drew had hurried to the hospital as soon as he had heard. Dria had been in a motorcycle accident – as a truck had pulled out in front of her. She was lucky she wasn’t hurt worst. She hadn’t been hit, she had swerved to avoid the truck, but ended up hitting a bush. She was scratched up bad, had a badly sprained leg and multiple bruises. They were lucky that Dani hadn’t been with her as well. The other driver hadn’t been as lucky. Mom and Dad were already there, probably worrying that they shouldn’t have gotten the twins those motorcycles. Dani was going to stay at home with Aunt Dia.

It took a while, but he finally made it to her room, C6379. It was in the Central Tower (C) and was in the third section out of nine on the sixth floor, (6300). And she was in room 79 on that floor, in that section, in that tower. Getting there, made him feel like he was trying to get to class in some magical castle that served as the grounds for a magical school.

When he arrived, Dad was just asking the doctor why Dria had been admitted, and why she had been admitted yesterday for a bad sprain and some bruises, and why she, as a minor had been admitted without calling her parents. Drew frowned. Dad could be a bit overprotective of his children at times, especially when he felt strongly responsible for something that had happened to them.

The doctor explained about blood tests and that they tried to call them. He also said she was ready for check out. Mom motioned for Drew to help her the elevator. He realized they still needed to talk to the doctor.

“Hey there, sis. You ok?” “Meh.” She was still groggy thanks to the meds but she was able to use the crutches, that they had provided. He slowly walked beside her as she hobbled toward the elevator. Someone was holding the elevator open for them. It was Officer Jeremy and some guy who looked like him, who was leaning on him. “Myles,” Dria said groggily. “And Sir, good to see both.” Drew nodded. “Sir, and… I don’t believe we’ve been acquainted? And it seems under the circumstances…” His eyes fell to Myles’ ankle and Dria’s leg.

Jeremy blinked at the two kids children. "You look like you've seen better days," he greeted; he held the elevator open for them until they were comfortably settled inside.

"Dria," Myles greeted, trying to stand up a little straighter. "Are you okay?" his worried eyes went to Drew. "Is she okay?" he asked, concerned that his sister might not be well enough to answer.

"Myles," Jeremy cautioned, but the rest of his words died on his lips. "I didn't know you two knew each other," he said instead. He hesitated and then glanced at the boy next to her--who seemed to be her brother. The name escaped him at first, but he chanced, "You must be Drew?"

Myles blinked, glancing between the two. Under ordinary circumstances, both of the Fischer brothers might have extended a hand to shake in greeting, but given how Drew was supporting Dria and how Myles seemed to be leaning against Jeremy, instead Myles decided to wave and Jeremy bowed his head just slightly in polite introduction.

"I'm Officer Fischer. My brother, Myles," Jeremy introduced; he wasn't even sure if he was in his police uniform, he was just so tired. "--Are you two okay?" he asked though, seeming very invested in her well being.

Dria shifted sleepily on her crutches, and a bit guiltily as well. "I'm okay. I'll sleep it off." She muttered. She looked at Myles again. "Are you okay? What happened to you?"

After waiting for an answer, Drew spoke up, "Dria and I got motorcycles. You can only be too careful on them. Dria was riding home from school yesterday, when a truck driver pulled out in front out of her; I guess he didn't see her. She wasn't hit, thank goodness. Instead, she swerved and hit a bush. Her leg is badly sprained, she's scratched up badly and has some nasty bruises. But I don't think that's why Dria is in such a bad mood. In fact, I'm surprised you didn't about the accident, Officer," Drew said sadly, and respectfully, as a frown crossed his face.

"The truck driver didn't make it."

As he said the horrible words, the descending elevator gave a sudden, sickening lurch.

Myles let out a startled yelp as the elevator lurched and grabbed onto his brother with more force.

Jeremy wobbled just slightly, one arm wrapped around his brother and the other planted firmly against the side of the elevator to stabilize himself.

"You all right?" Jeremy asked, not just to Myles but to all of them.

His brother nodded but still seemed a little jostled. "What was that?"

"Probably just an electric surge," Jeremy lied. "Happens all the time in the hospital, these elevators get a lot of use."

Myles nodded, slowly believing it, and then resumed his conversation with Dria, albeit with a little uncertainty. "I'm okay," Myles promised. "I just fell down." He seemed a little guilty at such a confession, like he was aware of how pathetic it sounded in this context. He wore an apologetic expression. "I'm sorry you got hurt, I hope you feel better soon."

Jeremy gave it a few extra seconds to make sure the elevator seemed to have stabilized, at least for a few seconds. The lights flickered and a sense of dread flushed over him, but he tried to play it off as nothing and instead tried to respond to Drew as if nothing had happened. "A lot goes in this town," Jeremy explained, "I don't always hear about everything." Truthfully, he'd been busy with his own cases all day; he just wanted to go home and sleep off the bad day he'd had but he wasn't so far off that he intended to be rude about it.

"I'm sorry to hear about that, though. I'm glad you're okay," he nodded to Dria. "You can't help how other people drive, you just have to take care of yourself."

Dria and Drew nodded to the officer about his driving comment. Dria about fell over when the elevater lurched, but Drew held on to her and she caught her balance. They nodded when Jeremy asked if they were alright. The lights flickered and a sense of dread flooded them, but they agreed with the officer when he mentioned the electric surge, and it being common. Dria gave Myles a small smile when he said he was sorry she got hurt. She said she was sorry he got hurt, and gently said, "Don't worry, you got hurt in one of the most common ways," trying to make him feel better. She didn't know if it would, but she hoped it would. "I hope you feel better soon too." The twins nodded at the Officer's explanation for not knowing. Drew seemed to want to comment further on Dria's accident but then something crazy happened.

The lights on the floor buttons started flashing rapidly and randomly. Then they stopped. The digital light pad above the door went crazy on the floor number, then stopped at Floor 1313 [ooc: I can change this if you like?].The elevator stopped.

Drew commented slowly and kind of fearful, "This isn't our floor..."

Jeremy's lip twitched at the number. "It's probably just a glitch," he said; his eyes had narrowed and though he'd shifted positions, it was subtle. He was still supporting Myles, who had nearly fallen when the elevator lurched.

Myles was not as calm as his brother; he had paled and clutched Jeremy like he was a lifeline.

"What kind of glitch does that?"

"It happens all the time!" Jeremy insisted, huffy as if he were offended that his brother didn't trust him. "Look," he glanced to Drew and Dria. "You two, just step to the back a little bit, all right? Hold onto the guard rail behind me. Myles, you hold onto that one there, too."

Myles complied quickly, still holding onto his brother.

"In the apartment complex, it jams all the time. The elevators get a lot of use, so when dust accumulates, it can get caught in the gears and chains," he tried to assure. He wasn't a repairman, not for elevators; he was a handyman around the apartment, but you needed specialists for elevators.

...He was talking out of his a**, but he at least sounded like he knew what he was saying.

Myles looked unnerved but had relaxed a little bit at the explanation, still clutching at his brother. "--Are we going to be stuck?"

"If we are, it's not going to be for long. We're in a hospital. It's going to be fine," he assured, but he kept his eyes on the door of the elevator.

It wasn't any more stable in any one corner of the elevator, he'd just wanted to make sure that if there was a problem, he was between it and the rest of them.

The door hadn't opened yet, but he wasn't going to let them know that he was feeling a little unnerved. His heart was pounding--and he couldn't figure out why.

Officer Jeremy seemed to know what he was talking about, so Drew and Dria calmed a bit, though their bones were still rattleing. They backed into the corner as he asked and held on.

Just then, the doors started to creak open slowly. It seemed that they were on a long forgotten hallway on a long unused floor. The lights flickered again. A figure appeared before them, nasty and rotting. Every time the lights flickered, the figure, dressed like a truck driver, appeared closer and closer, and even more gross! Some one screamed, and it wasn't Dria!

Myles had screamed; he was tired and seemed completely jarred by the sight of the woman.

"It's fine!" Jeremy snapped; the screams had awakened him almost immediately and once again he'd pressed himself to the front of the group.

They were in a hospital. People probably came here all busted up all the time. This was--probably some costume, some--

His hand was on his gun but he didn't draw; instead, he reached a hand out as if to grip the man's shoulder, to keep him at bay or to help stabilize him, or any excuse he needed to make sure that he had a hand on the guy before he could come closer and scare anyone further.

Only, he couldn't get a grip. His hand passed through his shoulder, and in that split second his gut seized. He recoiled quickly, still between this--this thing and the rest of the group.

His other hand shot to the elevator door and he pressed rapidly, faster than he'd ever pressed a button before, trying to close the door. He smashed as many buttons as he could, to any other floor. He didn't care where they went, just as long as it was away from here.

Drew thought he might scream too, when Officer Jeremy's hand went through the man., but then Dria did something quite unexpected, she went limp in his arms, and he sagged from the deadweight. At first he thought that she had fainted, which was actually quite understandable, given the circumstances. But then she snored. "Huh?" However, he didn't have time to process it. Jeremy was pressing every single button to get away from the thing (or least Drew thought he was). The doors closed, and the thing was gone. They went through another episode where the elevatar lurched, the lights flashed and the elevator floor lights went sporadic again, then cleared out. The digital light pad above the door went crazy on the floor number, then stopped at Floor 01. The doors opened to a perfectly ordinary, bustling, hospital ground floors. Mr. and Mrs. Bones were already at the door waiting for them. "What took so long, Drew?" His father was a little impatient. Drew went weak in the knees, and would have fainted if it weren't for Dria in his arms.

Myles was rigid, scream dying in his throat and leaving an awkward silence in the elevator.

Jeremy was frozen, eyes wide, staring blankly at the parents as his heart pounded loudly in his chest. A few seconds passed and then, slowly, he moved upright.

"T-these are your parents?" he forced out, trying to keep his breathing even and steady. He looked from the two kids, worried about Dria and reaching out a hand to help Drew with her. "--Hey, nice to meet you. Officer Fischer," he said, waving briefly. "Just. Old elevators. Wiring's all messed up. Must be overworked." He chanced an uncertain laugh; he was pale, not so much as his brother, who stared wide eyed and clammy at the open doors.

With his free hand, Jeremy reached to take his brother's wrist; Myles immediately clung to his whole arm.

"Come on," he insisted, trying to get the kids out first. "Let's get you out of here so you can go home."

...Get them out of here, keep them safe, before something else happened.

Drew's face was white, and dripping with sweat. He nodded mutely when Officer Fischer asked about Dria and his parents and took the Officer's help with Dria.
As they carried Dria out of the Elevator, Drew somehow the strength to voice to Mom and Dad, "Remember, Officer Fischer helped with Dria that one night? And this is his brother Myles, who is a friend of Dria's." Mr. and Mrs. Bones helped with Dria and looked concerned for the rest of them.

A nurse commented to the Docter next to her at the nurse's station, "Strange, that Elevator was just put in last week. It shouldn't be causing so much trouble."

Drew frowned. Darned Halloween Magic crosscurrenting with Senshi magic. At least that was what he thought it was. Poor Dria was too drugged up to notice,.. somehow, she slept through most of it.

As the Bones were leaving, Drew turned to Officer Fischer. "Oh Officer Fischer, I never finished my sentence about the truck driver. He never made home for the night. He'll be able to go home within the week."

Jeremy stared, almost dumbfounded as the two began to walk off. His mouth hung slack when Drew finished his sentence and he fumbled for a response, but when he could find none he just nodded and raised a quick hand. "Good, yeah. You all have a good night."

...It was great that he'd survived the night, but it still didn't explain what the hell he'd seen when he stepped out of that elevator.

A shudder ran down his spine and he shook his head.

He was tired. He was hungry. He was cold.

Myles was clinging to him, clearly still spooked, and Jeremy finally just shook his head and forced himself to start the trip home. He wrapped a hand around his brother's waist to support him as they left the hospital.

Not soon enough, though; Jeremy hated hospitals and Jeremy hated Halloween.
