The fight at the theater was long enough ago that Cybele was no longer hunting out of anger. There was something about seeing her friends hurt that made her grit her teeth and need to drive her fists into something. On the quiet nights she knew that it was no good, that there was more to it than that, but out of habit she still found herself powered up and walking the same paths.

Some things were simple. The city needed to be kept safe. She needed to come out, to do what she could.

That was where she was, out because she had to be, heels clicking slowly on the sidewalk of a park, barely hunting at all, and that was the night when she found something. There was an aura. It was an agent's. It was a lieutenant's, she was fairly certain. She did her best to not think of lieutenants as prey, not anymore, but it was still something worth checking out.

She broke away from the path and through a few cleared out flowerbeds.

Prompt
You have a near miss that almost kills you (maybe you almost got hit by a car, the plane you were supposed to go on ended up crashing, you narrowly dodged a falling piano, etc) and you're thanking your lucky stars that you're alive...until you realize that no matter who you talk to, no one responds to you. Strangers don't hear you on the street, friends don't return texts or calls and no one answers the door when you knock. It's almost like you're a ghost….for the next twenty-four hours, you appear invisible to every other person on the planet but then suddenly, out of the blue, it's like nothing has changed and none of your friends know what you're talking about when you explain the odd phenomenon. Was it all a dream?

Crocoite was feeling strong. He was feeling scary and imposing, and definitely on track to becoming as notorious as his General. Moreso, in fact. He was going to be everything she wasn't: a leader, a powerhouse, and a nightmare that no one would ever dare forget.

He could see the changes in her, and they were pathetic. She was becoming weaker, while he only grew stronger. Where she faltered, he would flourish. It only made sense that as the teacher fell, the student rose to even greater heights.

Sensing the senshi, he could feel the aura was stronger than the ones he was used to. That meant she had to be a Super, but that did not intimidate him. At the moment, his confidence knew no bounds, and his usual caution and self preservation instincts were taking a back seat to his bravado. Ego often won out over common sense, despite how rational and calm he liked to pretend to be.

Maybe he was just enjoying the taste of chaos a little too much.

He walked toward her instead of away, though he was in no hurry. He had his cane at the ready, walking with it leisurely and spotting the senshi not too far off. He grinned, the corners of his lips curling viciously, eyes glinting as he locked on to her.

"Good evening, miss."

She spotted him through a patch of small trees and she approached slow and careful, not sure what to make of him. It wasn't a familiar figure, but then, it wouldn't be. She hadn't dealt with any lieutenants in a long while, now.

In fact, she was trying to restrain herself, to hold back the anger that always seemed to be under her skin these days. Not every fresh face in the Negaverse was a monster. She did her best to smile as she came fully into view. "Good evening," she said, as she took in his hair, his eyes, his cane.

His crocodile cane.

Cybele's eyes went wide and then narrowed. She tensed instantly, her hands going into white-knuckled fists. "Crocodile cane guy," she said, practically spitting it, borrowing Anser's words. "I've heard of you."

The anger won out, then. He was lieutenant, maybe strong enough to hurt her young friend, but she was stronger, strong enough to put him in the ground, and she would. She stopped wasting time on pleasantries. She ran forwards, risky as it was, and swung a fist straight at his face.

Crocoite tried not to look surprised when she said she'd heard of him, though a pulse of electric pride and excitement shot through him at the idea. So he was already gaining a reputation, was he? Or perhaps he had just managed to find one of her friends. Either way, the more people that talked about him, the better it was for his gaining ranks within the Negaverse.

He knew his General had a notorious reputation, and it was his goal to surpass her in every way.

"Crocoite, if you please, but you were very close. To what do I owe the honor of your knowledge? I cannot say I've ever heard of you before." Not by sight, anyway, as she had identified him by his cane. He tapped said weapon lightly against the floor, an idle habit he had that made a vaguely annoying clicking noise in the otherwise still and quiet area.

He was not expecting the White Moon soldier to come at him, jerking backwards and trying to dodge her fist, but unable to match her speed. He was greeted by a strong punch to his jaw, sending him tumbling backwards with enough force to chip the sidewalk.

Ow.

Scrambling to his feet, tasting blood but not allowing himself to stop and take stock of the situation, he took his cane in both hands and leaped at her as quickly as he could, barely recovered from her blow but still aiming to swing his cane at her head as hard as he could. She might have been stronger than him, but he was not going to just roll over and let her defeat him without a fight.

He was articulate, but not in the way that made her think that she had the wrong man. He looked smug, almost, at the thought that she'd heard of him. His words made her feel almost bad about punching him. His tone did not.

Still, she held her ground as he stumbled back, not quite ready to hit him while he was at the disadvantage. She was trying to be nicer to lieutenants, after all, and there was just enough lingering doubt about this one that he hadn't dug his grave quite yet. Crocoite, though. That didn't sound promising.

"My name is Cybele," she returned. "And I believe that you have hurt my friend. Anser. She's young. Feathers. Sort of reckless." A lot reckless, really, but that was no excuse for some agent to be cruel to her. The anger burned. Cybele gritted her teeth.

She was snapped out of too much feeling by the crocodile cane itself coming straight at her. She twisted so that it didn't hit at the worst angle, but it still hit, sending cracks of pain across her skull and a moment of stars across her vision.

She blinked and then sent a knee towards his stomach.

"If I hurt her, then surely she deserved it. Perhaps, if you are so concerned about how young your soldiers are, you should not be sending children into the battle field. Just because they have been given powers, does not mean they should be fighting. You might as well be handing them guns and putting them on the front lines. If you send someone out to fight, then I will not hold back. And I fight to kill."

He had no apology to offer, not feeling bad in the slightest for doing his job. In fact, he very much liked what he did for the negaverse, and was well on his way to finding a more secure place in it. For now, he was just taking orders as they came, and continuing his patrols.

Making 'friends' like this was just a bonus. At least he knew he did not have to hold back, and if he could win, he would be able to really prove his worth. Maybe get that promotion he was looking for.

Or, as it quickly became clear to him, he could just break some of his ribs.

"Ooomph!" he grunted, as her kick connected. It sent him falling backwards, and he threw himself in that direction to attempt to put distance back between them. He did not keep on his feet, though, despite his best efforts and fell heavily to his backside.

Growling, he struggled to his feet.

"So you've got a grudge to settle, eh? Fine. I do not fear a fight." Which was, of course, a lie. When it came to risking his survival, Crocoite was a massive coward. He was just at odds with his pride, which forced him to stay when his brain screamed at him to run.

"Oh, please," said Cybele, "Like not having powers has ever protected anyone from people like you." She had given the Negaverse its fair chance, a long time ago, until she'd run into attack after attack that had left rows of soulless bodies in their wake.

Now, she smiled as something cracked under her knee.

He stumbled backwards. She advanced as he fell, letting herself tower over him. She bit back the guilt, letting herself feel proud that for once someone dangerous might not get away. "But that logic I can accept. Here is mine." He was fast in struggling to get away, enough that she couldn't get an attack in while he was on the ground, but she at least did her best not to let him get any distance. "This is personal. You hurt my friend. This is professional. You've proven yourself a threat."

He looked like he hurt as he stood up again, but he kept talking, even face to face with her. She didn't wait for him to recover more. She threw another punch.

"And I kill, too."

Uh oh.

Crocoite was beginning to see that perhaps he had bitten off a little more than he could chew here, though he had never intended to strike up the ire of a Super senshi while hunting lower ranks. His cockiness got him into the deep end now, as he probably should have run away when he had the chance. And, of course, due to his rank being low he could not teleport away to safety like he had seen generals and captains do.

Crap.

Now was not the time for banter or trying to look tough. He had to keep his focus on what was happening in the fight itself, rather than distract himself with thoughts of sarcasm and taunting. It was way easier to talk a big game than to actually follow through with it, as it turned out.

The punch connected despite his best efforts to pull back. It caught him on his jaw and he was sent stumbling back again. He was dazed, unable to really get his bearings and leaving himself wide open for another attack. Did she say she killed?

He needed to call his General. Though it was embarrassing and she would punish him, he was running out of options.

Her knuckles hit flesh, again, and Cybele had to grit her teeth against a grin. She would wipe that slimy, salesman smile off of his face. Today, he would be the one to pay.

It was not good, she knew, to turn to violence just for the way it made the adrenaline pound through her nerves. She had left her share of bruised lieutenants hating the White Moon in her wake, which she remembered when his eyes opened in fear.

Today, she did not care.

He'd hurt her friend, and she'd heard it in his voice that he was the type that would hurt and kill again.

He looked weaker now. One more good hit and she thought she could get in and finish him.

She kicked towards his stomach, hoping to bring him down.

Crocoite was not sure how this was happening. He had been so confident only moments ago, and now panic was beginning to set in. He was unsure if he was even going to survive this fight, let alone win it. That was a long gone fantasy, and he was more concerned with preserving his miserable life than his easily damaged ego.

After all, there was no way he could get stronger, or get revenge, if he just flat out died here.

All the air in his lungs rushed out when her foot connected to his midsection. He crumpled. He was not going to ever admit out loud that he was curling into a fetal position, but he certainly was. It was pathetic, and made him feel miserable, but he had few options. He just covered his head and hoped the beating would eventually stop, and he wouldn't be dead at the end of it. He did try to reach out to his General, wanting to contact her before his brain gave up.

There was something about the solid, heavy impact of kicking someone to the ground that made Cybele feel like a super senshi, a superhero. She didn't often feel that way, but this man was so cruel and unapologetic, and this was for Anser. Anser, she thought, would call her a superhero.

So Crocoite fell, and Cybele stepped after him and looked down, fully prepared to snap his neck for all that she wanted to get a few more kicks in now that he was down, to let him really feel it first. That was the dark side of her, and she pushed it down, keeping businesslike calm on her face.

There was no one on the ground.

"What?" she said out loud, before her eyes narrowed and she hissed, "Where did you go?" She glanced around the nearby grass and took a step to poke a small bush far too small to hide anyone with her foot. There was no aura, either, she realized. Had he teleported? Was that something lieutenants could do?

Clearly, he'd gotten away somehow. Cybele huffed and turned back towards the sidewalk. At least she could hope he'd think twice about who he attacked in the future.

fin!

Crocoite was dazed, and barely heard the senshi over him. She was probably gloating, but his ringing ears thankfully blunted the impact of her words. Likely, his ego would have been as badly bruised as his body currently was, had he been able to hear her. Not that he had any will or strength left to do anything about it.

This was how his illustrious career in the negaverse was meant to end? In some pathetic, forgettable and ultimately meaningless fight that no one would ever hear about? No one would ever care what his name was, or what he might have accomplished.

Because he failed to do anything.

He felt like he was waiting for an eternity for her to stomp on his head, or some other fittingly brutal end to come for him. Instead, he heard a frustrated tone in the air, and then she was... walking away from him? His vision was blurry, yes, but the fact that her form was getting smaller was still easy for him to see. She vanished soon enough, and everything was still and quiet.

Maybe he'd just lay there for a little while longer, and hope his General got his call for help and would actually show up. Somehow, he doubted it.
