Event Prompt 2 of ??? Every person who happens to have received one of the unaddressed pumpkin baubles begins to feel oddly strange. You find yourself growing more irritable and restless. You’re finding it difficult to sleep and when you do manage to sleep, your dreams are plagued with nightmares. The weird symptoms don’t fade when you power up - you’re just as irritable, if not even more, when you roam the streets as your alter ego. What's gotten into you all of a sudden?

A part of Hurst's familial duties in relation to his niece found him visiting one of the few pumpkin patches that populated Destiny City. Noah needed pumpkins to carve, of course. She had already taken over the porch of her mother's house, but knowing that his apartment would be bare if not for her divine intervention, tasked him with gathering some pumpkins for her. Only of the best quality, as well. Hurst wanted to pretend that he didn't know where she got that assertiveness from, but that would be him trying to fool himself. Unlike his best friend, Hurst didn't try to dodge the obvious.

Eyes scanned rows and rows of orange, noting the imperfections and ones of interest until something else entirely caught his eye. A tall figure, pale, dark haired, and bright eyes. Would you look at that. It was Lorne.

Common sense would dictate he leave the man be, after doing nothing short of harassing him at the grocery store. Alas, Hurst operated by acknowledging common sense, and setting it firmly aside in the name of antagonism. It was built into his nature to prey on those lacking a backbone.

"Oh Lorne~" Hurst called out, like he was addressing a good friend he hadn't seen in a very long time. "Fancy meeting you here. What a nice coincidence, hm? What brings you here today?"

Lorne hadn't been having a great week.

It was funny; usually after something like what'd happened with the wolfish officer had happened, he would've been upset, distraught, plagued by nightmares. But he hadn't been. In fact, he'd been feeling pretty darn good, bar the healing process that'd gone into his neck. It'd been a brush with death, but the first that hadn't really... messed him up, somehow. He'd stood his own against a general as a man, and even if he'd nearly gotten killed for it, it didn't take away the sense of satisfaction that he'd stood his ground in the moment.

So why was it happening now? Like a delayed reaction or something? Every time he shut his eyes now, moments like that - the near corruptions, the bite, the time he'd killed an officer with a misplaced jab of his pen - that was all he could see, only in increasingly distorted, warped versions of the events. The swirls of chaos around his starseed. The rush of blood from the stab wound of his victim, horrifically satisfying. Sobbing before he felt the snap of his own neck.

Why now? He just didn't understand why it was happening all of a sudden, and the dark circles under his eyes were a tell-tale sign that he hadn't been sleeping. On top of that, he just felt... wrong. Off. On edge. More than once now, he'd given Fritz a bit of a hard time. He'd even snapped at one of his own students, something he'd immediately regretted. They were just children after all. Lorne was supposed to be the adult.

So here he was at the pumpkin patch, intent on buying some to decorate the classroom - maybe he'd even carve them with his friends, although even as he thought this, Lorne for once in his life didn't feel especially inclined to see anyone. God, he just wanted to sleep -

It was in this state that he heard Hurst's voice, and immediately, he tensed. When he turned to face him, this time, he met the other man's eyes without a hint of red in his pale cheeks. "Right. Listen. I'm really not in the mood. There's plenty of people here; why don't you go bother one of them?" Honestly, it didn't sound like him at all. Too harsh, too blunt, not remotely polite. But he didn't have it in him to feel too bad about it, especially not after the last time.

...Interesting.

Hurst noted the 180 Lorne had apparently done---it was so drastic, it almost seemed like he wasn't even the same person. No blush. No stutter. Direct. Rude even. Very interesting. "Oh, there's plenty of people here...but they're not you, Lorne." Hurst replied, smiling a bit. "Goodness~ This is such a stark contrast to how you were the last time I saw you." He paused, but only for a moment.

"Did Nadia come to her senses and dump you?"

Now, he was just purposefully being outright antagonistic.

He was not taking the hint: typical. But it was no less frustrating, and Lorne worried his lip between his teeth, feeling annoyance surge up in him like fire.

“I am not feeling well, “ he said simply, curtly, turning his attention to the pumpkins again and willing himself to try and ignore Hurst. (Why was Nadia even friends with someone like this? To think she had let someone as foul and irritating as this touch her...)

Then Hurst made that comment, and Lorne turned back. There was a flicker of fire quite unlike himself in those usually warm yellow eyes. “No; the only one she’s ended it with, salaud, is you. Now kindly casse-toi.”

"Apparently not." He replied. It was utterly fascinating. What had gotten under the man's skin? Him aside. Lorne was apparently in a foul mood before he got here, and that was quite uncharacteristic of the man. "And you kiss Nadia with that dirty mouth?" His eyes twinkled, amused, and though he didn't know much French, it didn't take a rocket scientist to infer Lorne was most definitely throwing some swearing his way.

"Oh, Lorne." Hurst clucked his tongue. "I can't be dumped if I wasn't dating her in the first place, and even then I didn't p***y out and let her go over a long distance." He did just want to push Lorne. It was his pure purpose in this moment. To just see the spineless man he had met in the grocery hopefully snap.

"Those sweet lips of her's tasted like loneliness, and Winter rain." A corner of his lips pulled up.

Any other time, Lorne would have tried walking away.

Any other time, he would have been beet red and immensely upset, pained by the thought of what had happened, both between himself and Nadia and her and Hurst.

Right now, though - he was just angry. Angry and tired and completely fed up with this man buzzing in his face. He had punched a general, a half youma abomination capable of snapping his neck with his jaws, straight in the nose and drawn blood.

If he could stand his ground against that, what was this man?

The way Lorne’s lips drew into a line should have been a warning. Or maybe not, because frankly it all happened very fast, and even then, it was so very unlike him. So very un-Lorne of him. But in an instant, he moved, swinging a hard and deliberate fist at Hurst’s face.

He did know the warning signs. He somewhat of a pro at it, even. He'd been needing to read them ever since school, the Navy, and then post Navy with Sergei. It had been a miscalculation on his part. A part of him that thought, despite the pushing, it still wouldn't happen. Maybe he would get close, but it still wouldn't happen and he couldn't get the man to snap.

He was proven wrong, and oddly enough, he was delighted, because he had gotten what he wanted.

There was a crunch and next thing he knew he was stumbling back from the blow, and felt the, unfortunately, familiar warmth of blood gushing down the front of his face. Hurst laughed as he caught himself, staying hunched over for a moment. "Finally." He wheezed, and out of the corner of his eye he could catch some very concerned staff coming their way. No doubt to probably escort them out.

"Channel that into keeping a hold of her this time, hm?"

Punching that general had felt oddly satisfying, even if he’d nearly died for the effort. He could vividly recall the sensation of his knuckles cracking against that wolfish face, the rush that had come from knowing that for once, Lorne Benoit as he was hadn’t taken a stand.

Technically speaking, Hurst wasn’t as bad as a general - but honestly, it felt about as good.

Finally, “ Lorne spat back mockingly, even as people were moving to separate them and escort him out. He didn’t really care. “Ta gueule! I You don’t get to stand there and lecture me on my relationship! Dégage, connard!

"You mean the lack of one until you sort of started to man up and owe to it~" He called after the other. Hurst brought up a sleeve to wipe at his nose, and couldn't help a breathy chuckle as Lorne spat and got pulled away from him.

He brushed off those who came to offer assistance, insisting he was alright and no, he didn't want to call the police. While from outward appearances, Lorne looked like the instigator, he knew full well who the real one was. Plus with his luck, it'd probably be Sergei who came out to record the incident. The Russian would use this chance to put him in jail for all the times he toed the law on his bike. No, that would not do. Eager to get away before the people really did press to do something about it, Hurst pulled away from them and hastily left the patch.

First, get cleaned up. Second, go to a different pumpkin patch. Third, actually get some pumpkins, and not a bloody nose.

Hopefully Lorne wouldn't show up to that one, too.
