Hartley had picked up a small supply of Halloween decorations and little things to throw a small party for himself and Afton. He'd have wanted to throw a bigger party but he wasn't quite sure his nerves would take that. So a few spooky movies ans and some food would do nicely.
He'd picked up a few little cauldrons, finding them adorable, and poured various treats into them. Some had popcorn, some had candy, others had trail mix. Lots of things for them to nibble on while they watched movies and did whatever else they were going to do for the evening.
Now he just needed Afton to get there with their dinner and everything would be set.

He'd done a bit of wandering about on his own that day. Knowing that Hart was bound to go a bit overboard on the sweets he'd picked up the ingredients to throw together a vegan chili. In the name of the season he'd splurged a little on a cast iron cauldron so that he could try and convince his friend that it was 'spooky' simply because of that-- a potion, maybe?
He'd prepped the chili in another pot, determined to re-heat it once he made it to his friend's house. He was almost there, heading up the tairs with everything in hand, when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. Instead of trying to shuffle things around enough to answer it he lightly tapped Hartley's door with his foot. "Trick or treat!"

While out and about, you manage to obtain a cute cooking pot designed to look like a witch's cauldron. It's a little eccentric but wanting to get in the spirit of things, you or a loved one obtain it and food is prepared in it, be it for a personal or social gathering.
Only... anything made in this pot tastes startling of candy corn. Regardless of whether you finish your homemade treat, you find that no matter what you eat or drink, everything for the next twenty-four hours tastes exactly like candy corn. The strange thing is, this only seems to happen once. After you've given it a good scrub, it doesn't seem to have the same effect ever again.
When he heard the knock on the door he jumped slightly but knew the only person who would be doing that was Afton. Smiling he slipped out of the kitchen and pulled open the door. "Not supposed to be doing that until it's dark." He laughed softly, tugging one of the bags out of Afton's hands so he could help him carry things inside.
"What did you bring? I made snacks .. well .. some of it was just poured snacks into bowls ... but there are snacks!"

"Vegan chili-- and before you tell me that it's not Halloween enough, I've got a cauldron to re-heat it in so it counts." He offered one of his bags to Hartley so his friend could help him inside, smiling brightly as he crossed the threshold into the young man's apartment.
Halloween was one of those things that he just enjoyed. It wasn't something that he'd gotten full gung-ho about until he was a teenager and he had the option to start going to costume parties and the like. Even if he wasn't exactly dressed up head to toe currently he was, at the very least, wearing a black t-shirt with a small N7 logo in the corner. If asked what he was dressed up as he'd make a claim that he wasn't 'dressed up', he was simply on shore leave.
With the bags out of his hand he shrugged out of his leather jacket, hanging it up by the door. "The cauldron should heat up pretty quickly, so it shouldn't be long before we've got chili ready to go. It didn't cool too much on the way over anyways..." He'd had it going in the slowcooker at home for a better part of the afternoon and he was really looking forward to eating it.
"Ohh! I'll let you get away with chili since yours is so good." He smiled as he set the bag on the counter, poking through it while Afton put the other things down. "I made some punch too, it's in the fridge in a pitcher. Thought it might be nice to have something ready to go rather than having to open bottles all night or something."
He could smell the chili now and was suddenly looking forward to it. Afton did make good chili and Hartley loved that he'd started making it vegan so he could have some too.
"I like the cauldron too, where did you find that?"

"There was a shop that just had a run of them on some sort of discount for the holiday. Cast iron, looked like, said it could be used on the stove. I thought it would be useful to heat the chili up in once I got it here." He nodded, setting everything down in the kitchen before bringing the chili and the kettle over to the stove.
"Should be crackers and cheese in one of the bags to go along with it. I didn't get the vegan cheese this time because, well..." His nose wrinkled. There were some things that you really couldn't make vegan without taking away their overall integrity and he was convinced that cheese was one of them.
"It's cute and bigger than the little plastic ones I got to put snacks in." He smiled as he dug in the bag and got out the things Afton had brought along. The crackers were opened so he could pop one in his mouth before he set the cheese aside. "Not too worried about the cheese either, i'm used to eating chili without it anyway."
While Afton got the chili heating he got two bottles of juice out of the fridge, opening both and setting one near Aft so he could drink it if he wanted to. "I am glad you thought to make the chili. Much better than ordering pizza or something."

"If you'd like to hold onto it after the holiday you can keep it. I grabbed it because I thought it was something you might like anyways." He flashed his friend a smile, reaching over to tuck a lock of hair away from Hartley's face. He'd spotted a few other little things that had reminded him of Hart while he was out shopping, but the cauldron kettle was the only one he'd actually picked up to take home.
When the chili began to simmer he grabbed a wooden spoon out of the kitchen drawer, stirring it slowly. "Smells fantastic. Tasted it at home just to make sure it was seasoned properly, but I'm looking forward to having a bowl along with whatever else you've got going on here for snacks. Did you want to taste it real quick and make sure we don't have to order pizza anyways?"
Hartley smiled, tilting his head toward the touch slightly before he thought better of it. He always did like the way Afton touched him like that, liked that Afton didn't get weird about it or weird about him liking it. "Thank you. It's really cute and it will be nice to have for next year too." He was usually picking up little things for various holidays every year because he couldn't help himself.
The chili did smell really good though and he was almost dying for a taste. "I'd love a taste. It smells like it usually does, which is fantastic, and I can't wait to try some." They didn't cook a whole lot when they were hanging out together but when they did it was usually something they both really enjoyed. He held out his hand for the spoon so he could get a taste before they put it in bowls to eat.

He caught a bit of the chili on the edge of the spoon, blowing on it lightly before holding it over to Hartley. He'd been tempted to try it himself first, just to make sure it wasn't too hot, but Hart was generally careful enough about things that he wouldn't just rush right in. "Here. Give it a try."
Hartley blew on the spoon again before carefully taking a bite of the chili so he didn't end up burning himself if it was too hot. Thankfully it wasn't and he chewed the bite for a moment before his face scrunched slightly.
"Um ... are you sure you made that the same way you normally make it Afton?"

He watched Hartley for a moment, brow furrowing at the change in his friend's expression. Hart had never made a face like that when eating anything he'd made in the kitchen before -- well, not since the one time he'd tried making something with tofu, at least.
"I didn't change the recipe at all. I made it just the way I did last time we had it at my place, crock pot and everything." The only difference was heating it in the kettle afterwards. "It was fine before I brought it here..." He took the spoon back so that he could taste it himself to see if he could figure out what Hartley was talking about.
Immediately he noticed a difference, the flavor of the chili not at all the savory warmth he was expecting, instead replaced by a sugary sweetness. He made a face, nose wrinkling as he turned to spit whatever it was he'd put in his mouth out into the sink. "What the hell..."
Hartley had swallowed his bite but still had the weird look on his face. "So .... is it just me or did that taste like licking melted candy corn? Only with weird textures."
It has still felt like eating the chili but it certainly hadn't tasted like it. He had no idea how it could taste like that either. With the ingredients that went into the chili it should have been savory and a bit spicy. Nowhere near the sickly sweet taste it had.

"That's not the chili I made at home." His nose wrinkled as he reached for the juice bottle that Hart had popped open. He brought it up to his lips, taking a slow sip to rinse the lingering flavor of candy corn out of his mouth only to find himself sputtering and coughing afterwards. The juice, whatever it happened to be, was just as sweet and not at all what he had expected.
"I dont know but, I mean I like candy corn but that was supposed to be chili and how in the...." He picked up the spook and took another small taste, nose wrinkling again when it still tasted like candy corn and not the chili he was hoping to have.
"I wasn't having this problem until the chili. It has to be something to do with that."
