Quote:
You have a near miss that almost kills you (maybe you almost got hit by a car, the plane you were supposed to go on ended up crashing, you narrowly dodged a falling piano, etc) and you're thanking your lucky stars that you're alive...until you realize that no matter who you talk to, no one responds to you. Strangers don't hear you on the street, friends don't return texts or calls and no one answers the door when you knock. It's almost like you're a ghost….for the next twenty-four hours, you appear invisible to every other person on the planet but then suddenly, out of the blue, it's like nothing has changed and none of your friends know what you're talking about when you explain the odd phenomenon. Was it all a dream?

Cars sucked. Taxis especially. He could not count how often he was nearly sideswiped by a taxi despite there being a stop sign. More often then not, he would be looking both ways and crossing a street only to have someone ignore a stop sign or whip around a corner skidding rubber and nearly killing him in the process. He could understand if it was a rat or a squirrel, but he was a cat. A animal adopted by man for companionship and to work to rid vermin from the world. Cats ruled the internet. They could lower health risks with a purr. Why would anyone not stop for a cat?!

Panting on the sidewalk, he glared back at the yellow cab as it turned a corner and stopped at a light. "I hope a youma jumps on your car tonight." He grumbled, moving off to a park bench to clean his ruffled fur.The weather was just getting colder now and he could understand some people might become a bit more bitter as a result, but that had no excuse for the person who walked over to the same bench he resided on, turned, and almost SAT on him. Jumping to the other end, he hissed at the man, growling at them for having been so disrespectful and careless that smashing a cat with his much larger body wasn't even a concern for him. True, he might have assumed he'd just jump out of the way, but there had been a whole other side of the bench to sit on and did he just want to prove a point? Was he one of those cat haters that wanted to prove they were the superior species and had to force themselves into very cat's space to keep them humbled in some twisted logic? Whatever the case, the man didn't bat an eye at him, and instead buttoned up his coat a bit more before unfolding his paper.

Letting his own growling go because it had no affect on this guy, he jumped down and started to head his way to the deli where he usually could get a slice for free from the owner. However, as he walked, everyone was too distracted to notice a cat was walking on the sidewalk. Dodging this way and that, he finally moved to a stop before he was kicked in the side across the sidewalk. Yowling, he ran across the street and to an alleyway, his ribs feeling sore from the surprise impact. The woman wasn't even on her phone to have an excuse to be distracted. She just swung her heels out and threw the pointed end right into his side.

"Ohh. That really hurts." And there was no one around that came over to say anything. Plenty of witnesses and no one cared he was just punted. What was this world coming to?!

Slower now, he carefully hugged the wall to the sidewalk, ears back as he moved away from people who didn't even bother to look down; oblivious to the cat that was so startling white that it would be hard not to see him. Upset, he wished he could talk to people normally to show he was here, to shout that he was in their way and to be careful. None of that mattered. Without a owner, he was just a cat, and cats in city were a dime a dozen.

A bit depressed, he managed to get to the deli for a bit of a pick-me-up. He liked Marko. He was a nice man, and despite being a cat, he talked to him and treated him like a customer. Arthur wanted to learn of a way to give him money but the man was old school and did not do online ordering. Moving to the glass, he looked up at the man and gave out a welcoming meow as always waiting for Marko to turn around and greet him. But today, he did not. He went to watching the game from the small TV in the corner of the room, and cleaning the counter.

Again he meowed, louder and more drawn out, and waited. Nothing. The man was not hard of hearing and the game was always at the same volume as always.

Arthur turned the corner of the deli to poke his head over the corner and again meowed, and again, nothing.

Frowning, he sat down slowly and waited, but after 20 minutes of the man moving about and looking around, he did not see him. Then at long last he looked directly at him and - said nothing. The simple act of him looking at him and then turning away ripped his heart to pieces and he felt his entire body fee like a brick.

Oh....that hurt.

It hurt more than the woman who kicked him.

Ears down, he decided maybe it was time to go home. Today was rough, and he didn't know if he could handle anything else. Turning, he walked out of the deli only to have his tail stepped on by a entering customer. Cringing, he rushed off into an alleyway. The city was being unkind to him. It was like Eleanor said. You can love the city but it does not owe you any love back. Live and thrive but work for it. No one has it easy here.

"I miss you.......you were always so wise." And if she had been around, she would have beat anyone who didn't notice him. If she was around, he could return to her arms and find solace in her warmth.

But the city and life had been unkind to Eleanor in the end. Maybe it had to remind him sometimes too. That he was a Mauvian, yes, but to everyone else he was just a cat. And cats were a dime a dozen in Destiny City. No memes on the internet would change that. It was life and fight or get kicked.

Speaking of, he really needed to lay down. His whole side hurt. Groaning, he took the back ways home and crawled onto the heating pad on the couch. Tomorrow. Tomorrow could be better.
