After school, it was always her habit to check the mail before entering the house, getting a snack and either working on her homework or getting ready to go to the Apothecary to help out Aunt Karin. Not that there was ever much of anything interesting. But it was habit. And, on the rare occasion, there might just be something for her. So everyday without fail, she would get the mail. Bill, bill, random book of useless coupons, newspaper, something for Farrah, another something for Farrah, samples for Oracle... and just what was that? A small parcel, with no sender's information, just a smiling jack-o-lantern. It looked... intriguing. And the name on it was hers. How fun!
Collecting the mail, she walked into the house and placed it all on the kitchen table. Except for her parcel. What was it? Who had sent it? She was curious. The last time she had received something like this, it ended up with her having a sister. Something that she was grateful for now, but at the time, it was not... just not. What kind of life altering thing would this parcel hold? More family? Or something else entirely? She wasn't sure she wanted to know.
But the siren call of the unknown was almost irresistible. She just had to know. What was there for her? With a deep breath and slightly trembling hands she found the edges of the parcel and ever so slowly opened it. The anticipation, the sense that there was something momentous about this... there should have been fanfare. Or something. But there was nothing. It was almost a let-down.
Tilting the package, something small and fragile fell out into her hands. A small, grinning, porcelain jack-o-lantern. That was cute. And very, very odd. Why would somebody send her a jack-o-lantern? Not that it wasn't cute but... why? There had to be something to say what this was. And what it meant. She placed it on the table and turned the parcel inside out. The only thing she found was a business card. Perniciousa. Just what the hell was that?
Wait a minute. Wasn't that a new store? Was this just some sort of promotional or something? The store itself hadn't opened yet. Perhaps this was just to build hype. It was a good marketing tactic if so. She would just have to wait and see...
And find somewhere to put this little pumpkin.
