Quote: With Halloween just around the corner, television stations are constantly playing various spooky themed movies and episodes of your favorite shows. When you sit down to watch something in particular, the screen goes static. You try to change the channel but every one of them is static. If you continue to watch (or attempt to fix the television), an eerie voice comes across the speakers begging for help and that they're coming. No matter what you do or say, they only repeat the same phrases. When you turn off the television and turn it back on again, everything has turned to its regularly scheduled programming. Monday nights were movie nights. Or rather, dinner and a movie night, in a non tradition, non date sort of way. It was a new tradition, but it was an important one. Not just for Otto, who was still settling into this new life, but for Rory as well, who he knew continued to worry about whether or not he carried any resent towards her for having set his corruption into motion. She'd come over, and he'd make dinner for the both of them, then after they cleaned up they sat down with a bowl of popcorn or some other snack to watch a movie. Usually they took turns picking, but since Halloween was coming up, tonight they were going to watch a cult classic; Hocus Pocus. Tonight's dinner had been shrimp fried rice, heavy on the egg, and he was just finishing up putting the left overs away. "Can you check the guide, see what time the movie starts?" He was pretty sure they had about ten minutes left to get settled, but there was a chance he'd mixed the times up.

Having a regularly scheduled friend-date was important to Rory and she appreciated that both her boyfriend and her dear friend-slash-brother-figure understood. It meant that Otto cared enough to spend time with her and she wouldn't have to fret as much about what might be going on or him hiding things or maybe even hating--
The point was that she was reassured by Monday movies.
Since it was October, she had brought homemade sugar cookies. Some had been cut into bats and the others pumpkins. They'd been iced carefully, stacked neatly on a plate design to keep the frosting from smudging.
They weren't pretty as bakery-made, but Rory was still proud of them.
"Oh, um," Rory stuttered, fumbling with the remote before she found the TV guide. "Starts in about ten minutes!" She chirped, twisting on the couch to stare at him.

Those cookies had been a tempting presence since Rory had brought them into the apartment but Otto had resisted grabbing one before they'd eaten dinner. However, now that dinner was over, there was nothing keeping him from helping himself to his friend's tasty treats. So, pushing the sleeves of his henley back over his elbows, Otto peeled by the cellophane and grabbed on, popping it into his mouth before turning his attention to the pan and two plates sitting in the sink. He ran water as he chewed and swallowed. "Ten minutes gives me time to get these taken care of." It wouldn't even take half that time. "Do you want popcorn or anything? There's a new box up there." He glanced back over his shoulder at her, then gestured towards the plate she'd brought with a wet hand. "These are great, by the way." Sponge in hand, he scrubbed at the bottom of the frying pan before rinsing it off and setting it in the drying rack.

She nearly got up to help him clean, but managed to stay put even if doing so meant worrying her lip. "I'm okay, dinner was pretty filling," Rory answered. She had eaten a decent portion, which was still relatively small but it was enough for her.
She ate like a bird, picking at food, but at least she'd eaten everything.
"Good!" The girl seemed to light up at the compliment, a smile on her face when she looked over at the pile of cookies. "I tried a new recipe. My cat's helped." IF by helped she meant were her taste testers...yeah they helped.
At least this time Bob hadn't knocked the bowl over and gorged himself on cookie dough.
"Um. Do you need help?"

Lips twisted up on one side, he glanced at her over his shoulder again, sponge in one hand, a plate in the other. "How much helps can cats really be?" They were magical cats, but Otto knew Reven, and it wasn't as if the kitten was the helpful sort. Besides, no hands. Well, he couldn't have said what Bob had, he didn't know Bob yet. At her question he shook his head, finished rinsing off the plate, and set it in the drying rack. Then he turned the water off and set the sponge back in the little dish beside the sink it lived in between uses. "Naw, there was only a few and I'm already done. Thanks though." The plate of cookies was grabbed as he walked around the island and came to sit beside her on the couch, setting the treats on the coffee table before helping himself to another and leaning back as he took a bite.

"Depends on what I'm doing," Rory answered, small shoulders rolling in a shrug. Most of the time her cats weren't exactly helpful, they sat and watched with big, hungry eyes until she caved and gave them bits and pieces of whatever she was working on.
At least she didn't have to worry about them getting sick over food the way she might've if they were regular cats instead of magical ones. That was the hope, anyway.
She nodded when he told her things were fine and then sunk back into the couch when he came to join her. One cookie was snatched, a bat, and she nibbled at it. Most of the time she didn't eat the things she made, but she felt obligated to.
"Which witch is your favorite?"

"Does help in their case mean keeping you company in the kitchen and taste testing?" He grinned as he said it, teasing her gently as he took another bite of his cookie. A frosted pumpkin with a big grin. The beginning credits of the movie began to roll by, and Otto's attention drifted back to the tv before Rory's question had him looking thoughtful. "That's a hard one. I think maybe Winifred, but really it changes depending on the scene. They're all great." It was a silly, ridiculous movie that he used to watch with his little brother every year. Now he supposed he'd have to watch it with her instead. "How about you?" He'd glanced at her, but as the screen flicked it caught his eye and he frowned as the flicking turned into pure static. "Well that's just shitty timing."

Rory offered her companion a soft smile. "Kinda." Half of the cookies had probably been 'tasted' for quality by either feline and she wouldn't be surprised if Bob had gotten into the frosting bowl when she left it in the sink to be cleaned for later.
That cat was a garbage disposal.
"I like Sarah," she admitted, thinking of how pretty the youngest Sanderson sister was and how she had a way with people. Plus the singing, even if it was to eat children, it was still fun.
The static earned a frown and Rory wrinkled her nose, reaching for the remote to try a different channel. "It was working just a minute ago," she said, finding that no matter what channel she tried, it was all static. "Do you think it's the TV? Did something disconnect?"

Otto had sat forward on the couch, ready to get up to check the cable box, but had waited for Rory to check a few of the other channels before actually getting to his feet. "I guess it could be the TV, but it seems more likely somethings ******** up before it gets there." Lips pressed in a thin, thoughtful line as he moved around the coffee table to the entertainment system. The TV itself was easy enough to pull out a bit, and he crouched beside it to check the wires plugged into the back of it. "Everything's still plugged in." He followed them back, checking for damage. The static sound faded, replaced by a voice calling for help, and Otto sat back on his haunches. "Well there it goes, maybe there was a problem with the cable company or something." He hadn't seen the screen yet, the continued white/grey of the fuzzy snow.

Changing, or attempting to change, the channels seemed to do nothing. The screen was nothing but mess of grey, white, and black static. Brows furrowed and lips pursed together and she wrinkled her nose, standing and getting ready to try and help him mess with things, even though she would have zero idea about what she might be doing, when she heard the voice.
It sent chills down her spine.
He...lp....please....help...they're....they're coming....
Rory backed up, calves hitting the couch and the girl toppling back onto the cushions.
"Um. Otto? It's not fixed. It's still static but...do you hear that?"

He heard it, but it wasn't the eery voice coming from theTV that had pale brows furrowimg. It was Rory's reaction to the voice, and her pointing out that the TV was not fixed. That got him moving, tall frame unfolding again as he straightened up and took a step back so he could see the static on the screen. "Well isn't that just creepy as ********," he murmured warily, watching and listening fora moment before he reached out to gently take the remote from Rory's hands. He tried a few channels himself but the result was the same each time, and Otto's frown grew deeper and deeper. "What do you think it is?" He looked down at her, then back to the screen as the warnings continued. could someone have hacked into the cable feed?

Rory didn't watch horror films, because they weren't exactly her kind of thing, but she had seen enough trailers to know that when TV's acted like this, something spooky was going on and knowing that it was Destiny City...Spooky usually meant bad.
"I don't know," she squeaked, letting the remote go without too much thought as she chewed on her lip. Otto wasn't able to produce any better results and she had stood up at this point, immediately reaching into the pockets of her dress to find her henshin pen just in case.
"Maybe we should...try turning it off and back on again? Cut the feed or whatever?" She wished she had one of the cats with her right now. They were more technologically inclined than she was.

Huffing a sigh through his nose, Otto glanced down at Rory before shrugging and holding the remote up and pointing it at the TV. "I guess it can't hurt." Well, he hoped not, at least. In this city who the ******** knew what would or would escalate things. He hit the power button and the screen went black. Then he hit it again. Instead of fuzzy static there was the opening scene of Hocus Pocus with the camera panning over a field. Sarah Sanderson's singing ringing out hypnotically from the surround sound. "Huh." Honestly he hadn't expected that to work. "I guess...movie night is still on?" pale eyes flicked down to Rory again, brows arched in question.

Like Otto, Rory hadn't expected it to work and when it did her expression blanked. Things were never that simple in the city and she kept waiting for that haunting begging for help and the warning that something was coming to slip across the audio. It didn't and she allowed herself to relax a little bit.
At the very least, she was with Otto which meant that she didn't have to worry about blowing her cover or revealing that she was a senshi to someone who shouldn't know.
Which was reassuring if only because it meant that they could defend themselves with a little more ease if things got worse or actually dangerous.
"Um, yeah, it seems to be fine now?" She wrinkled her nose but sat back down on the couch. "Won't hurt to try."

He stood there for a moment longer with the remote in hand before finally sinking down to sit on the couch again, brows slightly narrowed and expression dubious. As if he expected the screen to change again at any second. Another moment after that he finally relaxed, settling back and kicking hi feet up. He reached up to catch Rory's hand, drawing her down beside him, but his attention never left the screen. But it never changed again. The movie played on as planned, and nothing else happened in the course of the evening.
