Prompt 4 You have a near miss that almost kills you (maybe you almost got hit by a car, the plane you were supposed to go on ended up crashing, you narrowly dodged a falling piano, etc) and you're thanking your lucky stars that you're alive...until you realize that no matter who you talk to, no one responds to you. Strangers don't hear you on the street, friends don't return texts or calls and no one answers the door when you knock. It's almost like you're a ghost….for the next twenty-four hours, you appear invisible to every other person on the planet but then suddenly, out of the blue, it's like nothing has changed and none of your friends know what you're talking about when you explain the odd phenomenon. Was it all a dream? Days off were few and far between for the overworked, overtired Margaret Butler so when she finally got some time to herself, she definitely took advantage of it. Most of the time she preferred to simply lounge around in her dilapidated apartment but today, with the cool fall breeze blowing and the smell of autumn in the air, she decided to stretch her long, gangly legs and take a run... for some waffles, of course. Best of both worlds, exercise and a warm, fluffy treat to take away the briskness of the cold that nipped at her earlobes and tip of her nose. She treated herself to IHOP for a change, shelling out an extra couple of dollars to get the fancier waffles in a to-go box. While eating inside was fun 'n all, she felt bad when she couldn't tip their waitresses as much as she'd liked so instead of wastin' everyone's time, she simply took her food outside and ate it while she made her way back to her apartment. Waffle was shoved down her gullet in a very typical Mags-like fashion, shred after shred growing bigger as she realized she was feeling particularly famished after her run. She didn't even pay attention when she stuck in a piece that was a little too big until it was too late -- with a wheeze, the bag was dropped and Mags found herself coughing and sputtering, choking on her own waffle. Oh lord, she'd be fit to be tied if she ended up goin' out of the world with a waffle, of all things!

Kat decided that she missed Mags yet again. It wasn’t something that wasn’t often in her mind, but for some reason, be it the crisp fall air or the rumbling in her stomach...she really, really wanted to see the blonde. And wanted some waffles.
She knew now that Mags preferred IHOP to the dreaded and utterly disgusting Waffle House, and so Kat had decided to give it a try, and perhaps if she actually liked what she had…she would buy a few extra and call Mags over to share one with her.
It was a good plan. And it didn’t sound so very difficult.
As she was walking, the blue roofed establishment in sight, she saw on the ground a bag that seemed to be full of take out food, yet nobody was around. People were so utterly careless about the environment…how could they just litter like this? It made her mad.
With a huff, she moved over and picked up the bag, looking left and right…for maybe someone had decided they had a bathroom emergency and dropped it in a panic?
There was nobody around, and so Ekaterina marched with the bag and dumped it in the nearest trash can. That would teach whoever it was that just left it lying around. Quietly she made her way to the door and slipped inside, hand slipping into her pocket to finger her phone. Perhaps she should call Mags first…
Perhaps they should do this together.

Hacking and coughing, she stumbled her way over towards the nearby park's entrance, knowing the closest place to grab a drink of water would be from one of the public water fountains. In a stroke of luck (or clumsiness), the worn out sole of her sneaker came loose, catching on part of the pavement and sending the tall blonde stumbling forward. In a loud OOMPTH, she came crashing to the ground and in doing so, managed to dislodge the piece of waffle that had wedged itself in her throat. A gasp of air and a few coughs later and her breathing was... well, it was at least better than it had been only moments earlier. Rising from the ground, she brushed off the scrapes and cuts her legs had received, using the backs of her hands to wipe the tears that had formed in the corners of her eyes from her choking episode. She was definitely gonna have to take it a lil more slow when it came to her waffles - sheesh. On the way back to where she'd abandoned her to-go box, she noticed a very familiar figure standing nearby. In fact, said familiar figure was currently throwing something away... that looked suspiciously like a to-go baG FROM WAFFLE HOUSE, NOOOOOO! "Hey, Kat -- wait a sec, that bag's mine!!"

Kat paused for a moment and glanced around, thinking that perhaps she had heard something, but…there was nobody there and finally she just shrugged and continued to make her way into the Ihop, pausing and glancing at the phone in her hand, sending a quick message to her curly haired blonde friend.
‘Mags. I am at Ihop. Waffles? I will pay.’
It was as good of an inducement as she could think of…but now she was wondering…did that make this a date? Was this now a potential waffle eating date? Should they share the waffles or…
Or if Mags didn’t want to show up…well.
Well if she didn’t want to show up then Kat would just have to deal with the bitter disappointment.
She was seated at one of the little two person booths in the back and sat, hands folded for a moment before her eyes landed on the different syrups, all separated by different colored caps.
The red one was very pretty. Perhaps she would use that on her waffles.
Idly, Kat checked her phone, half expecting her friend to just waltz in after getting the text. It sounded like something Mags would do, after all.

But Mags didn't check her phone for any incoming text messages because Mags was standing right alongside her friend as she punched in numbers on her cell phone. Okay -- sure, Kat certainly hadn't realized that it had been Mags' waffles to begin with and the older girl wasn't gonna fault her none about it. Mistakes happened. New waffles could be made in a jiffy. Yet even after the bag had been trashed, Kat still didn't seem to be paying her any attention. It was like... like she was ignorin' her or something. Maybe she was just too distracted in her texting --- yeah! That had to be it. So Mags followed behind the other girl, dodging people left and right (who'd have thought there'd be so many rude people not gettin' out of the way for her in an IHOP, of all places??) until Kat chose a booth for them to sit in. She slid into one side and Mags cheerfully slid in the opposite one. "So -- what flavor ya gonna try?" Blue eyes watched as the girl toyed with the syrup tops. She knew Kat wasn't a huge fan of fast food-ish waffles but she was plum happy to see that she was willing to give them a try again. "Ah'll probably stick to maple. A classic, ya know?" But the girl continued to not respond and Mags was starting to worry. "Did Ah do something wrong?" The smile started to slip as she wrinkled her nose. "Kat, talk to me. Ya gotta say something, gal."

Kat sighed, resting her elbow on the table and spent another minute pressing the lever on the syrup container before pulling her phone out again and frowning, wishing that she could get Mags to reply quickly…she wanted to know if she should order or not…
Quietly she sighed and wrote the blonde yet another text, though hesitated before she sent it.
‘Please answer? I am in Ihop. The red syrup looks good. Perhaps this could be a date. I enjoy your company.’
Wrinkling her nose, Kat took out the middle ‘date’ part and sent the text , looking straight ahead and sighing, eyelids drooping. Why wouldn’t she answer? She wasn’t supposed to be working today. At least Kat hadn’t thought she was working today.
Perhaps she should have stopped by the Waffle House first but…
The thought of one of those limp abominations made her skin crawl. Finally, Kat rested her chin on folded hands and stared glumly at the empty seat before her. “Where are you, Mags…” She murmured, finally closing her eyes, hoping that someone came to take her order soon.

"This ain't funny, Kat." There was a soft desperation in her voice, pleading with her friend to cut out the prank, that it had gone on for long enough as it was. Why in the world the girl was pretending she wasn't there was beyond Mags's comprehension. Was she trying to give the blonde girl a hint and Mags was too dense to figure it out? Panic settled in and she leaned over to nudge the girl on the shoulder, trying to force her to physically at least look at her. But the girl didn't budge - she didn't even blink at the shove. In fact, she was staring off into nothing, as if she didn't even acknowledge that Mags was sitting right there in front of her. Idle mumbling got lost under her breath, a mixture of emotions overtaking the upset blonde as she debated on what to do. "Please don't do this -- Ah know I'm not the quickest to get things but if Ah did something wrong, Ah'll fix it, promise." No response. "Kat -- you're one of my only friends, Ah...c'mon, gal, talk to me. Please, we can figure somethin' out, right?" Still, no response. Margaret Butler could feel the tears forming in the corners of her eyes and this time, it wasn't because she was choking to death on a waffle. No, she was upset because one of her closest friends - one of her only friends - was deliberately ignoring her and for the life of her, Mags didn't know why. Most of the time, she shrugged off the fact she wasn't as smart as everyone else. It was a fact of life she'd taken in stride but for once, she really felt like her lack of intelligence had cost her something... probably one of the most precious friendships she could have ever asked outta a gal. "Fine. If you're gonna be like that then... then Ah'm just gonna leave." Grabbing the neck of her t-shirt, she lifted the fabric up and in a very unlady-like fashion, rubbed the tears from her eyes before they had a chance to start spilling down her face. Lacking coordination, she managed to fumble her way out of the booth, blue eyes giving her companion one last painful look before she left the table. "Don't know what Ah did wrong but if you won't even tell me, Ah got the hint. If you change your mind.... call me, or somethin'. Ah'm sorry Kat, for whatever I did." Before fresh tears had the chance to fall, blonde ringlets bounced over her shoulder as she took off out of the IHOP, her appetite as lost as she currently felt.

She hadn’t shown up.
Kat had partaken in four glasses of chocolate milk and had eaten half of a waffle that…while it wasn’t the best, wasn’t the worst either, and had found out that she actually didn’t like the red syrup at all. It was far too sweet and tasted like plastic…but Mags hadn’t shown up.
Quietly, Kat paid her bill and swallowed hard, feeling herself trembling slightly as she walked outside.
It wasn’t that she was upset…but perhaps she shouldn’t have had all that chocolate milk. Perhaps it was upsetting her stomach.
Or perhaps it was just Mags who always upset her stomach.
Perhaps she just…she was sure that there would be a text soon. An apology from her friend, a goofy message, misspelled as always but… But right now she just wanted to see the girl and…well.
She couldn’t.
Quietly, the girl powered up into Tinaksite and decided to make herself useful for the evening.
Tomorrow she would call Mags. And perhaps tomorrow she would actually tell the girl how she felt.
Finally.
But not today.
