Lyonsite jerked her head to one side and was rewarded with an audible crack. She jerked it to the other with the same result, and grinned. The woman then rolled her shoulders as she strolled alongside her companion for the evening, starting tonight's patrol of Destiny City. Feeling amped and ready for the night, she looked down to the man beside her.

"Alright, Chuckles---" She started. "Tell me something cool. Like why in the world you even wanted to become a dentist anyways."

Good old team building while waiting to see what the night unfolded, right? Something to fill the time. Plus getting to know the lieutenant beside her better was just interesting.

There was an old tall tale about cracking joints, that it was bad for people, wore them out, made it easier for arthritis to set in. That was probably why so many people flinched when they heard someone crack a joint.

Penikisite was never one of those people. The cracking of bones, whether a joint or a molar being tugged from the socket, had never really bothered him. If anything, it carried a note of gratification to it, a task carried out and a job well done.

It was strange to be smaller than someone. Ever since he'd hit his early teens, he'd basically towered over his friends. To stand beside Lyonsite was one of the few times in his life he felt dwarfed. He wasn't sure yet if he liked it or not, but there was no denying the novelty of it.

"It was practical, " was probably a less exciting answer than she would have hoped for. But not untrue. "Father was a dentist, mother was a doctor. I had the aptitude and the resources for it, so here I am. Honestly, my work is one of the duller aspects of my life, " especially now, "but it allows me to do as I wish with my personal time. So there's that."

Team-building, naturally, meant reciprocation. That much he knew. "And you?"

"Fair, fair." Lyon replied with a bob of her head. She looked to the side as they walked, grinning a bit at the pumpkins that were starting to appear on balconies, patios, doorways and displays now that they hit the month of October. "Doesn't sound very inspired though. Don't you think you could find a day job that's almost as exciting as our night one?" She swung her head around to look back at her fellow lieutenant, grinning wider now.

"Hard though, I know." As the question was returned, she continued. "I stumbled into it! Always knew I wanted to be an engineer of some kind because I like knowing how things work and how to work to make things work. Then a family friend who knows the current master distiller at Diesel was like, hey you got an engineering degree, and the right attitude, and the distiller is looking to retire after training the right person---you want a job?" Lyon jabbed both of her thumbs up.

"Hell yeah I wanted a job, especially post college! I love it. I'm learning a lot of things still, but I get to be in charge, soon, of the quality of the liquor Diesel produces---and you know, the perks. Free bottles here and there. If you ever want some, Chuckles, you let me know and I'll hook you up!"

"Very intuitive, " he remarked, trying not to sound dry about it. It was hardly her that'd coaxed him into medical school because it was the practical thing to do. "No, not especially inspired - but I had both my parents and scholarships backing me up, so at least in essence I am debt free. Makes the night job much easier. It was harder without it." That did earn a grin, because he was, in his own way, much happier now that they had this.

Besides, forget hard. "I don't think there's a job out there better than this, " Peni remarked in a low voice, something glinting in his eyes as he gave a low laugh.

Then, he quirked his head, a bit of attempted humor slipping from him in, "Figuratively or literally?" to the stumbled. He thought it was funny at any rate, and looked rather pleased with himself. Then from there, though, he just listened, because that was again what was to be expected of a teammate. Good, active listening with nods and murmurs of interest. "I see. Heh. Yes, if there's ever a chance, I'd be quite curious to try what you've made. All I can really offered in return is toothbrushes and sugar free gum." And that certainly was funny, right? He did allow himself to laugh at that one, because it was hardly a fair exchange. That's what made it so great.

"Yeah, good point." Lyon replied. "Can't argue that logic. I got a wee bit of debt from college I could do without, but I'll be rid of it in this lifetime at least. So props to you, for not having any, and you're right, life's more exciting with this edge to it now!" She looked down at him (literally, because height difference), at times when he spoke. While the entire team had its fill of characters so far, seriously, their clown lieutenant in particular was interesting. Lyon could quite honestly say she had never encountered anyone like him before, and it was interesting to see how he reacted to things.

"Ha!" She barked, "Figuratively, this time---I do my fair share of literals though, no worries." The lieutenant grinned. "Woah there, guy, the liquor is a bit more valuable than that---" She reached, down, to lightly nudge his side with an elbow. "Think I could trade you a few bottles for a cleaning?" Her grin widened. "I'm a little over due." She straightened, and walked a long for a bit more before she smacked a fist into her other hand. "Oh yeah! Chuckles!" She exclaimed, swinging her head around so fast her mane of hair defied gravity for a few seconds.

"I came up with something---ahem." Lyon paused for a moment. "You know that saying about pennies? I got one for you." She gave a moment of pause, for dramatic effect. "See a Peni and pick him up---all night long you'll have bad luck." Another pause, followed by an expectant grin at the man as her brows lifted.

"Eh? I'm putting that engineering degree to good use."

"Do you want me to pay it?"

Penikisite didn't sound especially concerned; it didn't exactly come from a place of concern, much less pity. Strictly speaking, it was logical. He didn't have debt. She was a part of his team, and so it only stood to reason to see to the people he was working with. He had money, and considering his essentials were taken care of, he didn't have much of a need for it. If she wanted to refuse, he wouldn't bother pushing it, although he didn't see why she would.

"Practical trade, " he quipped, arching a brow at her. "I mean, I would have done it for nothing, but that works too. - just try not to eat anything too obnoxious before you come in - and I'll need your dental history beforehand." Dull. It was dull, but practical. Why was he talking about this right now again?

He blinked, a bit taken aback when Lyon stopped suddenly, shifting his weight more heavily onto one leg and crossing his arms as she gave her little 'presentation'. Surprisingly though, or maybe not, at the end, a slow smile crept onto his face, bubbling up into near-hysterical laughter. "That - that's good, " he managed to get out. "Too good. I'll have to use that one!"

"Do I want you to what?" The woman stared at him, not exactly sure if he was making a joke or not. When he was jesting (hurr hurr), he usually followed it up with a quirk of the lips or something (she was learning), but here? Nadda. "You say things with such a straight face so much, it's hard to tell sometimes when you're cracking a joke or not!"

Her expression picked up regardless though, and she was back to beaming. "Yeah! I like practical and I like fair!" She grinned at the man, it splitting her face. "You're the best, and you got it! Think you can squeeze me in something in the afternoon next week?" It seemed nearly impossible for her grin to get any wider, but somehow Lyonsite managed, and was absolutely pleased that the lieutenant got a kick out of it.

The taller lieutenant did a dramatic mock bow for him, her mane of hair tumbling over the top of her head and shoulders from the forward motion. She then shot back up, and the hair followed suit, somehow looking even more crazy than before. "Thank you, thank you. You do me a great honor, sir, carrying it on! I look forward to your tales of it being put into use."

The clown stared back at her humorlessly, which was kind of ironic given the whole painted grin deal he had going on. He blinked once, slowly. "To pay off your loans. - you would know if I was joking, " and he said it so dryly with a light upturn of his lips, oddly amused by the whole exchange.

The bigger she grinned, the easier it was to see how useful the cleaning would be. It would've been easy for Penikisite to blame the fact that he was a dentist on his lack of close relationships, that the messes in their mouths were the first thing that caught his eye no matter how small - but really, he'd always been that way. "Tuesday, 3PM?" Her gums would probably bleed.

Her hair brushed him on the way both down and up as she bowed, and it didn't annoy him like he thought it would - the clown laughed, oddly tickled by it, and rather by her, too. "In excruciating detail, I promise you."

Lyonsite looked baffled. Straight up baffled. Like he was pulling her leg. He said he wasn't joking, but maybe he was joking about not joking. Idly she nodded her head. "Yeah...yeah, Tuesday at 3 sounds great---thanks!" It was a quick mental note to herself to get a box and grab some bottles of bourbon from work for him when she went back in.

She was still hung up on that thought, but her lips couldn't help but pull up as he assured her he would tell her if he used it---except now she was going right back to the thought.

"Okay---" Lyon turned to face him again, full on, since they were still stopped in the middle of the street. "But you don't even know how much debt I have still. What if I had like---" She picked a high number off the top of her head. "25,000? You can't seriously tell me you'd offer to pay that." She laughed, because woah, that would be crazy.

Penikisite stopped a little late, swaying and not quite facing her as he shrugged his shoulders. "I already offered to pay that. Twice now." The shrug turned into a roll, billowing out into a stretch as he laced his fingers in front of him. "I don't bother joking about money - it stopped being funny a long time ago." He finally craned his neck to glance at her. "So, do you want it or not?"

Lyonsite stopped laughing as her jaw went a bit slacked.

Oh.

Oh wow.

He was serious.

She stared at him for a long moment before she shook her head. It was a slow shake before it sped up, hair going this way and that before she reached up and slapped her palms against her cheeks. After a moment she laughed again, and then gave the man a smile.

"Nah. I don't. Thank you though. Even if it's no thing to you---it's kind, to me, regardless, and I appreciate it."

And just very surreal.

People usually didn't get all their school debt wiped away like that unless they were like...valedictorians who could play piano, cello and violin on top of volunteering at the soup kitchen for 40 hours a week and spent their summers in third world countries doing peace missions. So for the offer to come up oh so casually from a man who was a bored dentist by day and a mad gallivanting clown at night to her was just---

Cool.

It was cool.

"Alright Chuckles---" Lyonsite said, reaching out to plant a companionable hand on his back briefly as she started to move forward again. "Let's go see if we can find ourselves some trouble to get into, yeah?"
