Hobbies: "It's time to d-d-d-duel!" Kamen does not like children's card games. He loves them. You wanna pit your Charizard against his Blastoise? It's on. Magic the Gathering is also fair game (ha!), but Yu-Gi-Oh! is his secret weakness. No, his deck isn't anything super special, but it's his and he loves it, and he will pit it against yours in a heartbeat. He's also an avid collector and trader, though more for the sake of completionism than having any kind of trade or sale value.
"Do the eyes look even to you?" He draws. In the margins of his notes, on important papers he was given to give to his parents, the desk, he doodles... pretty much anything that occurs to him, regardless of if he actually has the skill to make it look like it looks in his head. That being said, he has approximately a billionty mostly-filled (hey, he'll actually fill one someday!) sketchbooks. His preferred media are pencil, India ink, and oil pastels, and he likes drawing from life the most, especially subjects like animals that are hard to keep still. He feels it's harder to capture a moving subject, so doing so offers him the most practice.
"Just a little light reading, y'know?" While he doesn't have his own set of encyclopedias or anything, Kamen does love reading purely for the joy of learning new things. He reads fiction occasionally he supposes, the occasional sci fi/fantasy epic, but he's much more likely to pick up a handbook on algorithms or beekeeping. His favourite topics are information systems and security, entomology (what, he was serious about the beekeeping!), and handicrafts, the last of which he actually does things with if he has access to the materials. You can laugh at him for knitting a scarf, but you will be cold in the winter and he will be warm in a scarf. A scarf he made.
Virtues: Sympathetic...-- Kamen has an ear for the plights of those close to him, and he'd drop everything for his family and friends in a heartbeat if he felt they needed him to. He connects easily with people he knows, and it's no trouble at all for him to understand the troubles of even people he doesn't know very well. He can definitely see where you're coming from, and you don't have to try too hard to explain your point of view to him. He has a very "do unto others" attitude, and his chief moral compass relies on referencing this motto.
Hard-working...-- If there's something that needs to get done, Kamen will do it. He'll burn the midnight oil and make sure everything gets sorted away and completed to a high standard of quality. No half-hearted jobs here - if you tell Kamen to organize the supply closet, you will come back to it sorted, labelled, grouped according to hazard category, and complemented with a way to keep a running log for supply orders. He is not satisfied until he has mastered a subject being taught to him. Bs get degrees, but it pays to get As. He's very reliable because of this, and he will make sure you're satisfied with the task before he considers it complete.
Curious...-- What is that? What is this? Who are you? Kamen is very inquisitive, and he loves learning about the world around him and the people in it. If there's a topic brought up to him, he will go out on his own to research it. If he could have a superpower, it would be to have expert-level knowledge on any topic he chooses. He fills his life with as many books, manuals, illustrated guides, and tutorials he can get his hands on. As a result, he generally doesn't have too much problem with his studies, since he genuinely wants to know this information even if it's moreso curiosity about how well his study methods work. Group research project? Leave it to him - he'll have a virtual tome of information for you in no time.
Diplomatic...-- There is no real need to make waves if it's not necessary. If someone asks him for his input, Kamen will give it to them, even if it's not good, and he will try couch it in the terms he thinks they will best understand and most appreciate. This can be difficult for him sometimes if it requires him to put himself in their shoes, but he has an extensive mental repertoire of responses to most situations. He does like people in general and does not want to make a misstep that could result in hurting someone else unnecessarily. He's naturally inclined to make sure everyone gets along and no feathers are ruffled. Not only is there no point to being rude without reason--objectively, it makes everything worse--but he just... doesn't want to hurt someone. He wouldn't want to be hurt.
Flaws: ...but Not Empathetic-- The trouble comes when Kamen sees where you're coming from and can't... care. It's not that he's cold-hearted, but understanding and synthesizing are two different things. For family and close friends, their struggles are his. Without that cognitive link, however, he's left to rely on what he knows he should do, not necessarily what actually occurs to him innately to do. This causes him to seem quite, well, cold sometimes. If you need five bucks for food, he'll give it to you because it would be wrong to let you starve... but he absolutely expects to be paid back. It's simply not in his nature to be charitable.
...and Ambitious-- Kamen is not Machiavellian, but he knows what he wants and he's going to go for it... even if someone else is in the way. Backstabbing is beneath him, but he won't lose any sleep at night if you sabotage yourself. He is going to get to the top. He is going to succeed. If someone isn't going to help him or move aside, then they're going to get stepped over. Nothing personal, you see; it's just that he has things to do and there's only so much daylight to do them in. Nothing below success is acceptable, and setbacks are merely learning experiences. "Contentment" is another word for "obsolescence".
...to a Fault-- No, seriously, who are you? Kamen can be nosy, often asking before thinking about if he really should be doing so. He doesn't mean anything by it, at least not ostensibly, but he will certainly pry if something comes up that he feels he needs to know. Asking him to justify his questions can often make him defensive ( "I was just asking!" ), and he definitely does not appreciate it when people are nosy about him in turn. That's none of their business! Yes, this is a fantastic lack of self-awareness in this area, but Kamen often justifies it by claiming he just wanted to know but they were surely up to no good with their questions. The concept of "need to know" only goes one way for him, and he is rather unabashed about this. He can be convinced if a trade is arranged, but his primary focus is always to be the asker, not the askee, and to always get as much information as possible.
...if it Benefits-- But if he needs to ruffle feathers to achieve some end goal, he will. If someone is causing a problem. and there is no reason he can see to be what he considers gentle with them, he... won't be. He runs cost/benefit analyses in his head before major decisions, and ultimately everything he says, does, and is exists for the purpose of furthering either himself or someone he cares about. If there's not going to be any purpose to it, why do it? He does do things for fun, but he views relaxation, fun, etc. as the purpose of doing that action. Additionally, he does have an awareness of the concept of being nice to someone so that you get what you want from them, and he does dabble in this from time to time; he makes an effort to keep from being manipulative, but his motives are not always pure.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Eyes: vivid turquoise, oblong and a bit narrow; long, thick eyelashes

3A] curls around his face

medium dark], with warm undertones
Clothes: some comfortable jeans and either a soft worn t-shirt (warm weather) or fuzzy sweater (cold weather); has no real colour or style preference but if you could slip him a shirt with a meme or something on it, he'd wear it just for laughs

He mainly got expelled for fighting. There were peers of his that would needle him (and worse) about his mothers and occasionally his sister, and that often extended to Kamen himself. But even when it was worse than needling, it was never anything obvious enough for Kamen to decisively present to school officials. After the first "adult authority figure" gave him a less than satisfactory response when he tried to report it (they couldn't prove the instigating behaviour was purposeful, and Kamen was fighting right back, so "clearly he wasn't innocent" ), Kamen didn't bother trying to get help from a second. The fighting escalated after that, and finally one time the fight was bad enough that he put one of them in the hospital. Because he was comparatively less injured and the other kid had his friends as witnesses, on top of a school record of fighting, Kamen was determined to be the aggressor and expelled. Going to Hillworth was part of the deal to keep the kid's family from pressing charges.
