Joy turned to view the darkening sky with concern. Looked like the storm was going to be a big one.
What are you looking at me for? Oh wait... you're not. My mistake.
I'm expecting a lot of accusatory glances. Sea witches and storms kind of go hand in hand, no?

Sirena didn't like storms, even when she was still human. They were loud, dangerous, and unpredictable—all the qualities that her step-mermother had. Before the seas claimed her for good, she gave Sirena what she had been longing for almost her whole life: to live as a mermaid for the rest of her days.
And she hated it.
She paddled closer to the shore, her tail whipping against the aging wood with each heave of the oars. They were all scavenged materials; lost objects that the humans — her people — had left behind. Whether deliberately or accidentally, she didn't care at present. All she wanted to do was get away from the storm, and warn as many of the humans as possible.
"There's a big scary storm behind me! You should all head to the mainland, like, now!" She spoke quickly, her gaze darting from the sea to the two. "What are you waiting for?"

Joy turned to Sirena and nodded. "That is good advice. But first I want to make sure no one is left here to get caught in it, or maybe even hurt."
Ebania frowned and sat up from the boulder on which she had been sunbathing -- that is, until a sudden rumble of thunder had roused her from her peaceful slumber. Sniffling, she fastened her glossy black locks into a thick bun atop her head with a hair-tie left behind by some two-legged folk; she had taken it for herself once they'd left the beach, thinking it a tiny blessing from the gods that its red color matched that of her shimmering mertail.
She caught sight of three figures at a short distance, albeit closer to shore. With no sound except a sigh, she descended into the splash of foam beneath her and approached them, occasionally peeking from the surface to make sure that they were still there.

Dark scratches his helm, trying to hide his embarrassment.
"I... can't say I've ever tried to reduce the severity of a storm."
He eyes the distant clouds, translucent tail swaying harder to combat the increasingly rougher waves.
"Could be more challenging. Instead of firing up the energy in the nearby environment I'd have to transfer the energy somewhere else. Even the transfer has to be well thought out: too much energy in the wrong spot could result in a volcanic eruption or a tsunami, or a storm that causes problems for other creatures. Not to mention, I don't have the right casting supplies on me."

Joy had an interesting suggestion of attempting to lessen the impact of the storm. I'm feeling tempted to try. I just need to find some last minute spell ingredients.

The blue haired mermaid acknowledged her with a nod. "Right!" Sirena beamed, just happy that they had the same goal. "But no one else is here. I think." She looked around to be certain. The seas were far from calm, but she could've sworn she heard some splashing nearby. Must be from the storm.
Sirena was lost now. It seemed like the two mermaids had been talking long before she arrived; something about witches and magic. She nodded along, trying not to let the fear show in her face as the storm raged behind them. The low rumble of thunder was so loud she felt it in her chest, then in her bones. They spoke as if they've braved storms before, and Sirena wasn't sure if she should be awed or worried.
The blue haired one asked the witch if he could do something about the storm. It wasn't the first time she heard magic-talk, so she wasn't completely lost. The extent of her magic was sweeping away all the trash that floated near their home, — from the humans, again — which didn't require too much effort. But lessening the impact of a storm? She needed some convincing.
"Somewhere else...?" Sirena tried to finish that sentence, but failed to. "Say you could do something about this storm. What casting supplies would you need?"
Dark scratches his helm, trying to hide his embarrassment.

"What kinds of things do you need?" Joy asked, glancing around.

Coming closer to the low murmur of their voices, Ebania peered at them over the surface of the water. With her nostrils and mouth submerged, her gills were hard at work: four slits, framed by glimmering scales of gold, gaping and closing rhythmically below her ribs. With a sputter and a bolt of courage, she raised both hands, pink and puckered by the sea, and called out to them from no more than twenty yards away: "Are you lot lost?"

Ebania
Dark holds up one hand covered in black scales, about to list off the ingredients the spell would require. He pauses when Ebania's voice reaches them.
"Not lost at this time," he called back. "Just seeing if we can divert this storm. You are welcome to join us; although Sirena here has suggested heading towards the mainland instead." Dark resumed the narration of the spell's ingredients. He tapped each each finger on his hand as he listed an ingredient.
"The spell would require five pieces of sea glass; one palm-sized manganese nodule; one bull kelp bulb filled half way with starfish mucus; one slender piece of driftwood, about an arm's length long; and one electric eel or electric ray (for the power it produces). Do you think we can get all those before the storm gets too close?"

Sirena jumped when she heard a voice behind them. She turned and saw another mermaid in the water. "Nope!" She replied, unexpectedly cheery. They were going to be lost in an hour or so if they didn't do anything about this storm.
Sirena tried to keep up with the magician's ingredient list. Her face contorted into a subtle grimace at hearing about the starfish mucus. Too sticky. No way she was going to volunteer to get that. The driftwood however...she turned to the raft she arrived in, her face lighting up. "I can get the driftwood!" She said, gesturing to the raft. Not like they were going to need it anytime soon.
She crawled off, dragging it along with her. With one sweep of her tail, she managed to loosen one of the outer planks, tugging it free after a bit of effort. Using her arm to measure, the piece of wood came up a few inches longer. It was a little on the thicker side; she wanted to check with the magician first. "Will this work? Or should I get a different one?" She asked.

Joy smiled at Ebania and waved her forward. "Maybe you can help us? We need a palm-sized manganese nodule, but I'm not sure what that is," she called out. Then turning to Dark, she added, "I think I saw some sea glass down the beach a ways. I'll be right back." Diving into the waves, she disappeared.
