[PRP] Stupid shoulders are stupid (Taibbi x Fisher)

It was morning, and although Taibbi was usually a morning person, this morning she was reluctant to greet the day, just as she had been for the past three sevendays. It was the sling's fault. Since she'd dislocated her shoulder three sevendays ago, she'd had to keep her left arm immobilized in a sling, which was all kinds of inconvenient for just about everything about being a candidate, but especially when it came to dressing and undressing. Because it took more time for her to maneuver her way into her clothes, she had to wake up earlier, and even so it was a real challenge to pull her leggings up and lace them, and she knew she looked absurd doing it.

This morning getting dressed had been just as much of an inconvenience as usual, and she'd managed to stain both her tunic and her leggings with the numbweed she was supposed to apply twice a day. She paid no heed to the new stains, as they had no impact on her ability to get through the day, but as she lined up in the dining hall for breakfast her mood began to sour. Evidently they were a little shorthanded in the kitchens this morning, so everyone had to ladle their own porridge from tureens, instead of a kitchen worker attending to the task. With one arm confined in a sling, Taibbi was stymied.

She looked around hopefully, doing her best to make eye contact with any person in possession of two working hands that she might ask to either hold her bowl or ladle in some porridge.

Thankfully for the young woman with the sling she needn't look too far, as a rough voice and a set of hands took her empty bowl and handed her a proper full one. Perhaps a little too full, as whomever intended to eat the meal clearly had an appetite, but it would serve. "This what you were aimin' for?" Fisher looked down at the kid with the sling, wondering just how long she'd managed to survive without being able to eat. Of course common sense dictated that the Weyr helped all those who needed it provided they couldn't help themselves, but no one else had stepped up when she was struggling.

Fisher didn't consider herself the hero type or altruistic type, but maybe time spent with a certain younger candidate was rubbing off on her. A good way, of course. Maybe she should have been a bit more careful too as the bowl she'd given the kid was a lot heavier than just an empty one, and with a single hand perhaps harder to manage. "Er, lemme take that back and help you get to a table or somethin'." Helping people was hard, especially when she wasn't used to doing it on purpose.

Taibbi smiled gratefully at the powerfully-built candidate relieved her of her bowl and returned to her a different one nearly overflowing. She cradled the bowl in the crook of her less-good arm and pushed the bits trying to escape back in with her other hand, and then licking it off her fingers, more or less indifferent to what good manners would demand in this instance. Eating neatly was not one of her skills.

"Yes!" she answered enthusiastically. "Thank you."

Momentarily she was astonished to be relieved of her almost-breakfast, but she just about managed not to protest. Her eyes, however, did not leave the bowl.

"You're Fisher, right?" she asked, trailing after her breakfast the older candidate. "What'd you think of that test they gave us the other day? About how we're supposed to act at hatchings and touchings and all?"
