In a memorial race to Paul Dana, who lost his life before the race, Dan Wheldon put the #17 on his helmet and sidepod.
Last lap, backstretch, Wheldon pulls out of the draft and goes to the outside of Helio Castroneves. Exiting turn 4, Wheldon pulls ahead at 217 MPH and WINS by 0.014 seconds, a photo finish for the first time in Homestead! Helio 2nd, Sam Hornish Jr. 3rd.
This was the 9th closest finish in IRL history!
Edit: ABC Commentary said that this has been undoubtedly the most dramatic race they've ever seen. The top 5 cars were all there, on the lead lap. It was a dogfight in Miami. All race long was full throttle, minus the cautions. Lap records were smashed. A very fitting ending to an emotional roller coaster of a day.
Did I mention Rusty Wallace was the "Darryl Waltrip" of the day? He got to talk to the drivers, and pronounced Helio's name wrong. 'Elio? No, it's Helio.
