Cybele hadn't had much reason to come to the university since she graduated. As a civilian, she still came once or twice a year to see shows, but her hunts never really brought her this way. Whatever senshi and knights lived in the dorms seemed to be doing a decent job keeping the area clear. Tonight, things were different. Maybe the beginnings of classes or early due dates were throwing people off. In any case, Cybele had followed an aura, and now she was facing down a large squid creature with far too many teeth.

Maybe they were spines and not teeth. In any case, the youma was covered in them, especially the tentacles. It wasn't very fast at moving around, but it just wouldn't stop whipping those tentacles around so that she could jam her heel into its squishy face. It was good she had come over. This one looked very nasty.

Killing it took a while. First, she had to track down a gutter pipe and rip it off the side of a building. Then, she used that to bat aside the tentacles to give her a clear shot, and then she used her magic to pummel the thing into goo and then to dust. She was fairly certain that a few students walked by, but at least they weren't the gawking kind, and by the time she was finished and standing there panting after making quite a spectacle, a bit scratched up and with her shoes covered in squid slime, they were gone.

Brown eyes watched the bushy crop of blonde hair from above, staring boredly at the way a few stray wefts bobbed emphatically to a comment she couldn't hear. The man to whom the hair was attached sat in a leisurely manner on one of the university's many stone benches. On one thick hand sat a ring — a new acquisition — and in the curl of his other arm sat Anette — a newer acquisition. They'd been sitting like that for the better part of an hour, now, and daylight quickly dwindled. Just head back to your dorms.

If they headed inside, they wouldn't need Sailor Pavo. If they headed inside, Ayesha could resume her workday without fear of sudden student death and police accusations concerning her involvement. If they headed inside, she could stop thinking about the way Jon laid so prone when that woman plucked the starseed from his chest.

Finally they started to move. Hellenberg Hall — nicknamed Hell Hall — was on the opposite end of the campus, so she would follow them along the few rooftops and sky bridges available to her. Pavo loped along easily in her flats, and twilit cover alongside the bustle and din of freshman get-togethers provided enough cover for her coins and bells. She topped a parapet, dropped down to the sturdy roof of a sky bridge, and — felt a youma.

Pausing in her step, Pavo craned her neck over the side of the bridge. She managed a narrow glimpse down one of the many alleys that wound between buildings, shortcuts that students often used to disappear or circumvent the crowds, and witnessed part of a pipe swing. Was someone trying to attack it?

She dropped to ground level, darted with as much quietude as an overdressed belly dancer could manage, and peered around the corner. Someone else was there, a super senshi by feel, and absolutely had the beast under control. She edged in nonetheless, if only to block any onlooker's view of the creature. "Do you need help?" She expected a no, but she remained where she stood.

While in immediate danger of getting her soul eaten or her face ripped open, it was much harder for Cybele to notice what else was going on around her. Subtle things like auras were especially tricky, and when she stood, breathing heavily over the pile of youma dust, the voice came as a complete shock.

She started and then whirled towards the mouth of the alley, letting the gutter pipe fall to the ground when she recognized the aura as Order. For a moment, she was slack jawed and wide eyed, but she shifted to a smile quickly enough. It still wasn't the best presentation, with her sweat-matted bangs and the splattering of goo across her outfit, but things could have been worse.

Things, she had slowly learned, could almost always be worse.

"Oh, hello," she said. Maybe it was just the fact that she'd been patrolling some with a fourteen year old lately, but it seemed strange seeing someone older than her in senshi clothes, especially a basic. Her clothes were lovely, though, and she seemed put together.

Cybele then glanced back down at the dust, considering the question. "This one is dead, but I wouldn't mind company while I look for more." She didn't feel any in the immediate vicinity, but that didn't always mean much, and safety in numbers would be good for both of them. "I'm Cybele," she said. Her usual curtsy seemed even sillier than normal given the circumstances, so she settled for a simple nod.

The question was answered first with the youma exploding into dust. Swirls of it got onto the whites of the girl's fuku, showing up prominently like bloodstains announcing her victor's status. White really was a prideful choice in universal wear on the battlefield — how could they conceal that they were hurt or inured? And how could Pavo keep up her illusions when it was often obvious that she wasn't bleeding anywhere?

For now, that didn't matter. She didn't have to think about it. The youma was dead, she could go back to being Ayesha, Jon and Anette were likely back in their respective dorms by now, the night was —

The senshi just invited her along. The senshi, with her hair antlers and silvery ribbons and impractical shoes, wanted her to go on a patrol for more of the creatures. Fighting them like it was a past time, or like they'd somehow make a difference by dusting a few youma. Maybe they would, but Ayesha seldom noticed them out during the day when she was conducting her business; more often, she found officers trying to harass her students. She nodded nonetheless — it would be rude to turn her down.

Her being Cybele, she learned. "I'm Pavo," she answered in return, smiling a little at the novelty of introducing herself in such a way. It must've been years since she spoke that name aloud for any purpose other than powering up. "Sure, I'll come with you. It's been a while since I've done anything like this, so I'm a little rusty." Cybele seemed the better lead, especially since she knew she wanted to look for more youma. Likely she had a patrol route planned out already.

"Do you spend nights dusting youma often?" The question was meant to be casual as she approached to join the other senshi. She felt stronger, certainly, and such a question could be a good foray into some insight.

Cybele took a moment to properly dust off, sending a layer of powder flurrying to the ground. Youma dust had a tendency to get everywhere, which was a reality she'd gotten used to long ago. She just preferred not to leave a trail. Any stubborn bits could stay until she powered down.

She felt the other's senshi's eyes on her as she went through her routine, post battle motions. She rarely even had new senshi watching her like that, but then again, she usually found new senshi in much calmer situations, or she'd somehow impressed them with how she'd fought. This was different. This was honestly just awkward. This other senshi, Pavo, was everything that Cybele was not. She was graceful, and serene, and clean. Cybele stood up a bit straighter and kept up the smile as well as she could, and she walked away from both the remains and the natural dust buildup in the alley and out into the slightly better lighting of the campus proper.

Rusty.
That was different than new, and even without further explanation, it seemed to make sense. Cybele nodded at that, and some of the tension dropped out of her shoulders. She'd been there. Plenty of senshi had, and catching someone up shouldn't be harder than starting from the beginning.

"When I can," she said. "Recently it's been fairly often. I have a complicated relationship with destiny, but I'm the Senshi of the Hunt. This is what I'm built for." Her smile shifted to one side.

She broke eye contact and started walking. There wasn't actually a set patrol route, but she could take Pavo more towards the quad. It was at least more open there, and free of any residual grime. "I can try to catch you up if you'd like," she offered. "I don't know if I'm the best at combat training, but if you have any questions or want to know what's been going on lately I should be able to help."

This is what I'm built for. Pavo often figured that destiny was a sham, a series of cloaks thrown up in wild colors meant to mesmerize and placate people into falling in line with the status quo. It wasn't always that way, she knew — sometimes the flag of destiny was the best choice a person could have — but the way Cybele explained herself sounded forlorn. Standing there, caked with youma dust and sweat and looking out of breath, the Senshi of the Hunt looked more like she wanted a cool drink and a seat and a long minute to relax, but she pushed herself onward.

There was ever more prey to hunt for this senshi. Pavo quietly acquiesced to walking with her despite any reservations on destiny. Cybele could give her an opportunity to learn any need-to-knows to protect herself and her students for the future — to preserve her life and her career.

Pavo chuckled to herself, suddenly struck by the realization that the Senshi of Mirages was herself a mirage. She was no more a scout than at absolute need, and seldom had that come up until lately. Maybe Cybele would see through that mirage; she seemed quick-witted enough in battle to suss it out, at least. "That would be kind of you," Pavo returned. "I've been out of the city for the last couple of years. You'd be surprised how calm India and Pakistan and Iran feel in comparison to Destiny City." Transitioning back to the States felt like a lucid dream — while she knew this soil as her home, it felt foreign for the years she spent cultivating her behavior in other countries.

Now she faced even stranger scenarios where she didn't know how to act to blend in; being a senshi didn't come with a guide. "Is there anything I should know about that's happened in the last two years? It's been so long that I'm afraid I might be a little too rusty to compete with new threats." The words trailed behind her as the pair advanced toward the quad.

"Oh?" The Middle East? There was an interested tilt to her head and she gave a small smile. As Cybele fell into step beside the other senshi, she also let herself fall into the comfortable rhythm of small talk. "I haven't really been following what's been going on over there. Last I heard, it was a bit calmer." She squinted. "At least, it hasn't really been on the news. I'm glad you were able to get a break, though. I'm sorry the war here still seems to be going strong."

She thought plenty about the war, of course, but she hadn't ever considered that Destiny city might be one of the most violent places in the world. The fighting stretched on and on with no sign of stopping. Sometimes, she tried to ignore it, too. She pressed her lips together as the guilt started to come. Maybe if she'd fought more, kept the numbers up, done something, people could come home to a safe city.

Two years was a long time but didn't quite feel like it. Cybele couldn't quite remember where the lines were. "We attacked the Negaverse a while ago. A creature showed up and helped us break into their castle. We killed at least one of their leaders, I think two, and we barely got out, but we crippled them for a bit. We won. It's possible," she said, still calm but with a spark of hard determination behind her eyes. "That's the biggest thing that's happened that I remember. I haven't heard of anything that's happened since." She'd been in and out enough that it was possible, though. "They've bounced back, now. They're still sabotaging events fairly regularly. There was a circus over the summer. They used illusion magic."

She frowned at that. "That was new."

While she was right about parts of the middle east, Pavo knew that wasn't the goal of the conversation. This was an engagement tactic meant to begin a point of understanding, maybe even a connection point in the lucky few, and this would be how she started to form a picture of Pavo. Pavo, the senshi who was absent some years in the Middle East.Pavo, who needed to be caught up on all the breakthroughs over the last couple years.

We won, she said, but the Negaverse was still around — Pavo found one of their members not long before this, attacking one of her students. They must have won a battle, then, and not the war. They began carving headway by taking out a leader, and if Pavo's experiences were any wager, that upset seriously impacted their planning skills. Coordination fell by the wayside with that corrupted girl, at least, who appeared to know nothing about even the basics of schooling. She stole a textbook in exchange for leaving her students alive. Would anyone do that if they were receiving proper coordination and care? Or was the girl just ill and the Negaverse took advantage of that?

When Pavo came back around to the conversation, she nodded solemnly. "So they've been more aggressive since then. Have they still appeared leaderless to you?" She asked the questions earnestly; not only did she have a vested interest in seeing the war wind down for her students, but she was also careful to convey no judgments passed in her tone. Asking for someone's opinion when little known could be a point of contention for many.

And Cybele was willing enough to share her own experiences. That was rare with such a new face. "And what would you suggest for a senshi returning to the city? Are there people with whom I should get in touch? Or places I should avoid?"

Pavo might have been missing information on the finer points of the recent war, but she clearly wasn't clueless. It made Cybele wonder what her job had been overseas. She'd met a few soldiers, and this woman didn't quite talk like them, but she still asked clear questions about leadership rather than the magic and the spectacle of it all.

That was the side of things that Cybele didn't think about as much, and she was silent for a moment as she thought about it. "I haven't heard of any of their leaders being around the city since then, at least the General-Kings and Queens. They've got huge auras. You can usually tell. They could be up in the castle, though. It seems fairly likely, since we can't get in there. They're being more defensive, now, on the administration side of things."

Then again, she hadn't exactly seen Laurelite prancing the streets back when she'd first awakened, either. She pressed her lips tight but didn't amend her statement. The attack had done something, and Pavo deserved hope. "As far as what I have seen, they don't seem so much more organized than we are. That used to be one of their big selling points," she said, looking over her shoulder to make sure the other woman was following. "Structure, leadership, power, that sort of thing, but it seems like they're mostly out on their own just like us."

If she actually talked to someone about joining the Negaverse now, she wondered what they would say. She didn't think she'd have the patience to find out. Anyone silvertounged enough to tempt fresh faced senshi was going to very quickly meet the business end of her fists.

"They attack public events in groups, sometimes. That must take more organization, and they've been using new techniques. Illusion was the one I saw," she continued. "If you're returning to the city, even if you're not coming out too much at night, you've got to be ready for that kind of thing. Other than that, I'm trying to get some training in."

They're mostly out on their own just like us.

Out of all that Cybele said — about the invasion, their highest echelons of organization, their seductions — that telling fact gave humanizing insight into the shadowy military that stalked them. The soldiers joining their ranks were mostly on their own, which meant they operated under mostly their own moral and ethical frameworks. That they still chose to steal from and kill others was, therefore, even more arresting than the fact they committed such acts. They planned these starseedings on their own. People like arabesque girl in green were acting unsupervised all while flaunting their vacant memories.

Counterpoint: just like us. Cybele's comment underlined that excruciatingly slim difference between senshi and agent, oft defined by translucent moral choices. She could kill people, too. Pavo was no one. Cybele was no one. They could get ahead in their careers by setting the opposition up to fail. The Negaverse was, then, comprised of people who took that bargain.

Pavo kept step with Cybele, her flats seldom deviating in their rhythm. Her bells jingled as if a beckon. "That's good information to have." Worrisome information, too; were they getting closer to her magic? Could they? Magic was their main edge over the Negaverse; had their enemies finally come up with some of their own?

"What about as a regular person? We aren't powered up like this all the time. I think knowing what we should watch for as ourselves is even more important than as a senshi, and we could spread that knowledge to other people to keep them safe." That might be what would keep her students from further trouble.

Cybele's main strategy with civilians was to keep them as far away from both the Negaverse and Order as much as possible, but Pavo did have a point, so she thought for a moment.

"That's harder," she said. "I'd say be wary of anyone in dark clothes that seem off, but you can't really get more specific than that. Their outfits aren't as strange as senshis', and once they start flashing weapons, it's too late." She tried to consider anything more specific. There were business suits, now that she thought about it. There were a lot of business suits, a lot of square silhouettes, a lot of stripes, and sometimes things that were stranger, like war paint.

"Uniforms," she said, nodding to herself. "They have uniforms you can learn to pick out, which I would recommend. Other than that, it's really just the basic safety tips. Be alert. Stick together, but be careful in crowds. Really, don't go out at night if you can possibly help it."

Something about that hit her the wrong way even as she said it. They were getting to the more scenic part of campus now, where dark corners and youma dust gave way to old trees and nicely manicured if slightly off-season lawns. She slowed and took a moment to actually look around. There were still no other auras nearby, and that was the only thing that let her relax even a little. The soft lighting, probably designed for safety, and the grand architecture did not help at all. It wouldn't stop many youma. It certainly woudln't stop an agent.

"But if people start staying in, the Negaverse will start breaking into houses," she said, and then she stopped short just a few inches from where the grass started, her brows knitting as a realization settled over her. "Teleporting," she said, voice flat. "Teleporting into houses." That realization was not going to help her sleep later.

Pavo walked in silence listening both to the sound of her own bells and to Cybele's careful statement and revision process. She seemed to settle on a thought long enough to say it, then in measuring back what she said, added her feedback to it, like questions answered before they were fully formed. Pavo wondered if this was the first time Cybele was asked to give advice like this. Then, she wondered how many times Cybele was asked anything. How many times Cybele ran into another senshi long enough to chat. Long enough that survival wasn't the first or even the second question on her mind.

Then she bowed her head, watched her flat white shoes move like careful pendulums leading her toward the unknown. She knew this campus well enough, though they now wandered toward the business and law schools where the buildings became grandiose. These were the moneymaking colleges, she knew. Some of the nearby students wore suits, others chatted emphatically on cell phones. Most stayed off the grass. A handful gave both her and Cybele long, quizzical stares.

These were the people that would die at night when they walked home late. They'd see another business suit, sharp and black, cutting a successful figure. Maybe they'd see an opportunity to strike up a conversation and make business connections. They'd get drained, starseeded, or corrupted. Avoid suspicious figures in dark clothes, Cybele had said, but that amorphous narrative was so close to sadder stories.

But it wasn't the walk that killed anyone. Teleporting into houses were her last words, and Pavo's face creased with a frown. "There's nothing we can do as civilians," she said at last. Nothing except act defenseless and hope to catch them off guard — which wasn't much difference from her senshi magic. "That's…" She sighed. "Not surprising. Sounds like we're all forced into this." The words sounded as flat as Cybele's voice when it came to holding meaning, but what else could she say? She wasn't a rousing speech-giver. She studied language, not tactics.

"Thank you for bringing me up to date on some of this." More odd magical phenomena would continue to plague her. More Negaverse interactions. More reasons to follow her students. Pavo felt tired. No — weary.

She opened her mouth for an I hope we'll see more of each other, then stopped herself before she eked out a noise. Phones, right? Pavo searched her skirts for one. In another few seconds, she pulled an ancient flip phone with a jingling keychain. "Would you like to trade numbers? In case someone teleports into one of our houses," she added half-jokingly.

It wasn't exactly comfortable talking about the power and tactics of the Negaverse, or thinking up new ways that they could hurt people, but at least that was an uncomfortable that Cybele was used to. The Negaverse had been just as terrifying and just as disgusting for years. That was why Cybele came out at night to kill things. She shook off the dread in order to look around, and saw that there were a few students around. That was what made her tense up, her jaw and shoulders going tight ever-so-visibly.

She did not love being judged by people for trying to save their lives. She turned to Pavo instead, watching her stoicism turn into something a little more hopeless. Rather than the teleporting or the Negaverse's strength, however, she seemed very caught up on the civilian aspect of all this. Cybele wasn't quite sure how to react. It wasn't like Pavo was the helpless one.

"It's a lot," she agreed, pursing her lips and then forcing them into a half-smile. "But look at it this way: we're the ones who can stop them. You, too. You're one of the ones that can help." That felt like a bit much even for a pep talk. Cybele let the smile drop. "At least, that's what we have to hold on to, and if you need help, I'll be around."

On that note, she watched Pavo pull a real phone out of her skirt and almost winced, less because of the age of it and more because something deep inside her didn't like the idea of people learning her real name. She summoned her senshi phone instead. "Oh, if you think about it, you should be able to summon a senshi phone that does it all automatically," she said. Her phone buzzed lightly, and then she saw Sailor Pavo added to her contacts.

'You're one of the ones that can help.'

Pavo understood that objectively. She knew it, and she practiced it — she watched and waited and plodded along when Anette and Jon were at their most vulnerable. She did the same for the students who left her office hours if they spent long enough in her company. Small assurances, she told herself. Little investments in Pavo here or there to keep her civilian life clean of blame and violence. So she nodded, as was all she could do to that assertion. She could help. She should help, but that seemed a wasted investment. A bad return.

The phone comment, however, earned an embarrassed smile. "Oh, this? This is my senshi phone, actually. My real phone is a smartphone, at least. I'm not sure how to… Get to that, but I'm sure I'll figure it out" she finished with a gesture toward Cybele's far-less-medieval-looking phone. She wasn't quite sure her phone added others to contacts without snapping a picture of them. Dutifully she returned to that process and took a low-res photo of Cybele for her own references.

Small steps, she supposed. Cybele was someone else she could call on should a student need it. Should she need it.

If they want me in this war, they better pick up their efficiency. Wandering around alone while trying to fight off the Negaverse was asking to be a target. What use was doing that when all it took was a pair of officers to overwhelm them? It wasn't her concern, she reminded herself. It wasn't her worry. She hadn't signed up to participate in a magical shadow war when she had so much more of her life and schooling and ambitions to attend to. When she had a marriage in her future.

This domain? It belonged to Cybele, who was far more suited to it. Dejected as she seemed sometimes, she was far more aware of how to seek and destroy. That was better left to professionals.

"Thanks again for the update. Good luck to you."
