Notes for playing Stable Tension:Thoroughness and Time. Verine has always been one to focus on a particular thing and do it well. This has always served her, and she has always lived life on her own clock, but she is realizing she really doesn’t have time for everything. Driven by discovery--learning new things or doing creative new things with her knowledge--learning more about what people have done and know, finding new ways to remix the existing.
Character should be involved in delving into more development work and tracking accomplishments--in research, in design, in mentorship. Broken by isolation and abandonment -- El, Sona, and August are the obvious ones, but also any of her mentees leaving on bad terms or family estrangements.

Wizarding Law: (yr 3) Verine took some Wizarding Law in honor of her grandfather who had served on the Wizengamot. She decided very quickly and astutely she would rather not.
Wandlore: (yr 4) Verine took a year of Wandlore in honor of her grandmother who had a made a living gathering materials for wands and helping craft them. It was fairly interesting, but she decided to focus on her other electives moving forward.
Mind Magic:(yr 6) Verine was inspired to take Mind Magic for whatever reason. She enjoyed the theory of it, but spending an hour a week getting her mind broken into was not fun and towards the end of the year when she realized she really just was not going to be an accomplished Legilimens, she preferred to skip class. She had an idea to look up or develop a potion alternative to occlumency, which she'll get back to eventually.
Apparation: (yr 7) Basic proficiency. In her school years Apparition was a nightmare. If she thought Flying and the constant visits to the Hospital Wing were annoying, apparition attempts were downright hazardous. For a long time Verine avoided apparating, deciding that Floo was perfectly convenient for everyday life, muggle transportation was quite sufficient, and she was born with working legs and feet for a reason. She has since practiced sufficiently to apparate safely to and from regular places like home, the Winchester Estate she grew up in, and the offices for the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers.
DREAM JOB Magical Researcher CURRENT OCCUPATION ■ Potions 1-3 Professor (starting Fall 2052) ■ Potioneer (2021 - present)
xxx✽PERSONALITY✽xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
STUDIOUS The methodologies of research and academia were ingrained in Verine from a young age growing up with her grandfather, who was an accomplished historian and former Wizengamut member. She carried his mindset into her Hogwarts experience, focusing particularly on Potions and Divination and anything that helped her get better at either. She thrives in the deep and thorough study of potions, but continued to enjoy diving into topics of other field and connecting them to projects in herbology and potions research. Her work style usually focuses on two or three seaparate projects that she dives very deeply into.
LIVELY Verine lives life day by day with more concern for what she’s doing than when she’s doing it. Parties are fun ways to explore something beyond her interest silos, as long as it's occasional enough to not interrupt her research or precious family time. She enjoys a good joke or prank, as long as said prank doesn't hinder anyone's work. Friendly and enthusiastic, Verine is always happy to befriend a new colleague.
INVENTIVE Verine's signature touch is her penchant for mixing things together-- from soaps and perfumes as a child, to foods and clothing as an adult, to herbs and elixirs as a potioneer, she likes mashing things up as much as she does mastering the original. Her potioneering career has primarily focused on substitution research, coming up with alternative methods or ingredients for brewing potions, understanding properties and techniques for better efficiency.
ORGANIZED For a person who loves mixing everything Verine is surprisingly organized. As a young student, she realized that replicating new mixtures was near impossible if after mixing every bottle was different from what it was labeled no notes were taken. She picked up good organization techniques from her professors and have passed along this encouragement for precise organization and clear documentation to her assistants in turn. Verine has become quite fond of putting things in boxes, literally and metaphorically, if only so it’s easier to note what falls outside the box and has gotten mixed with other things.
FREE-SPIRITED Although she follows up on interests with methodical, careful examination, Verine tends to let her flights of fancy decide what those project obsessions are and when they will be. She operates very much on her own clock, more concerned with getting something done well than doing it on any particular time schedule. Getting things done well is more important to her than getting it done exactly on time. Sometimes though, this means she misses out on family time, or is in the office unpredictably.
✽LIKES ■ Plants, particularly flowers and cacti ■ Academic conferences/ the occasional party or social ■ Art-- Constant, informative, and beautiful. What’s not to like? ■ Simple everyday divinations ■ Babbling Beverage (her favorite potion)
✽DISLIKES ■ Deadlines and inflexible schedules ■ Interruptions ■ Flying and apparition ■ Arguments-- not the same as academic debates. She has few close and long-lasting friends as is, and disagreeing with them or her husband always makes her uncharacteristically sad, nervous, and timid. ■ The news-- for the most part, it changes on a whim so as long as it doesn’t affect her, she could care less.
✽STRENGTHS ■ Thorough and methodological in her exploration of a topic, clearly documented. ■ Openness to continue learning.
✽WEAKNESSES ■ Tunnel visions/ Time management -- When she's focused, it's great, but she also forgets everything around her. ■ Maintaining relationships -- While good at befriending people, she expects people to be quite independent in their learning.
✽DREAMS ■ Achieving work-life balance or work-life melding, if it exists. ■ Inspiring students to better understandings of how potions can fit into their life.
✽FEARS ■ Abandonment-- her parents left her for old tombs and dangerous creatures. While she’s secure her husband wouldn't leave her and usually doesn’t usually think much on it, she’s terrified of the possibility. ■ Being unapproachable -- She has few close and long-lasting friends as is, and fighting with them or her husband always makes her uncharacteristically sad, nervous, and timid.
xxx✽BACKSTORY✽xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
✽EARLY CHILDHOOD Verine's parents, a cursebreaker-auror duo, left most of her raising to her paternal grandparents. Verine was homeschooled by them, a historian and magical materials retailer by trade, with the occasional governor or governess coming from their professional circles to supplement studies. Any flight of fancy was allowed and lessons covered whatever she was fascinated by, but whatever she chose she had to learn well before moving on.
✽SCHOOL YEARS Verine started her first year flitting around, attending a different club each week and constantly getting detention or losing house points for being late or submitting an assignment late. As the years passed, she got somewhat better at time, but was still constantly in detention for being caught out after curfew, usually in the Library or brewing something somewhere she probably shouldn't. She made many acquaintances and enjoyed socializing with others at parties, but aside from her younger cousin, had no one particularly close to her. Instead Verine spent most of her time alone obsessed over her latest project or assignment. Potions and Divination were easily her favorite and best subjects, one appealing to her penchant for careful study and methodology and the other to intuition. She considers one of her greatest accomplishments getting to serve detention every day for a month cleaning and organizing the Potions Storeroom, where she learned not only how it was organized, but about different ways of organizing and storing herbs.
Verine's seventh year was abruptly punctuated with the death of her grandmother in mid-October. Going home to a more empty household during the winter break served only to drive Verine to seclude herself further. Rather than build a program of study around a dream career she didn’t really have, Verine was quite happy to just take NEWTs in the classes she excelled in and enjoyed.
✽POST-GRADUATION With no particular career goal in mind, and at her parents’ suggestion and grandfather’s blessing, Verine spent the year immediately after graduation on a solo adventure around the world. Her path followed mostly wizarding communities and other wizarding schools and with each month-long destination, she found odd jobs to experience and live off of. Stumbling, lost and injured, into a foreign muggle city for the first time in Taiwan, she was rescued by Elmond Li, a part time hotel clerk apathetically applying to colleges. They struck up an odd friendship and six months later when El moved to England for college, Ver took the chance to fly home.
They continued hanging out and fell in love even when their paths diverged: she pulled him out of his shell, and he helped her learn to appreciate the shopkeeping aspects of potioneering alongside the research. Verine hid her magical background from him until he proposed, explaining her potioneering work as being a pharmaceutical researcher's assistant. Elmond seemed accepting of her magical eccentricities, and four years afterward, when both their work had settled, they were married. A year later, they had their daughter, Sonora. Ver's parents stayed over with them that year to help care for the baby and tensions flared over living as a wizarding or a muggle family. Despite the occasional disagreement thereafter, they were able to work out a happy compromise and carefully keep this balance in conversation.
✽POTIONS and PROFESSORSHIPVerine’s career started in basic research on magical properties of various herbs in potions and applied research in alternative brewing methods. She has an academic reputation of taking existing potions and recreating them with different ingredients, making either more potent versions, or easier to produce (either in method or ingredient cost). She occasionally showed up on projects relating to divination, healing and history, but publishes primarily in potions and herbology. Despite loving the research community, Ver always missed being in a school environment.
As Sonora started at Hogwarts, Verine shifted her potioneering work towards more development work. She took Sona and any of her friends who were curious under her wing as summer assistants and grew to really enjoy tutoring and mentoring them. Having someone to restock the sales shelves was mutually useful as well! She was happy to welcome her nephew August to their house over the summer breaks, and happy to have family or family friends arounds as assistants and mentees. After graduation, Sonora got engaged and left home to fly around the world for cursebreaking, leaving Verine and Elmond with at first just August and occasional visits from Vespera and Rion, and then it was just the two of them.
Finally, after 31 years of full-time research, Verine took an opening for the Potions 1-3 professor at Hogwarts, shifting her research to part time for the foreseeable future. Her first few years as a professor were quite hectic as she adjusted her teaching style from tutor-mentality to professor mentality. She got a lot of advice from Ada Whitethorne in crafting developmentally appropriate projects and assignments.
In December 2054, Verine's childhood home was attacked. She managed to get the children out and ran back to help any other survivors. Verine was heartbroken by the loss of not only her parents and grandparents, but her husband in the fire. It was discovered that her parents had died--not to the fire, as expected, but due to stab wounds, presumedly by one Awstin Tittensor. Ver helped Wren and Robin in the aftermath, stayed by Sona's side as she recovered from smoke inhalation. When the school year resumed though, tunnel visioned into teaching, grading, and potions development. After many months of sleeping under her desk to avoid going back to an empty house, Ver was more than happy to leave the cabin to Sona and Jonah and their baby Violet and accept proper lodgings at Hogwarts.
In the years afterwards, Verine isolated herself more and more within the walls of her potioneering office and classes, socializing only when her daughter or one of her niblings dragged her out of the office for dinner or socializing.

✽OWLs/ NEWTs in detail✽ OWLs and NEWTs
Astronomy ~ A Astronomy was Verine’s final OWL and the only one that day; she crammed diligently the entire day, but honestly the prospect of being done with Astronomy was more exciting than the subject. She felt rather bad for in retrospect because it was sometimes useful for Divination, but the scores were what they were and she was very excited to be done. Charms ~ EE Verine had never been a poor student at Charms because of its partial uses in Potions and her strong theoretical knowledge, but she still thinks the “EE” stands for "exceedingly and extra lucky”; it was one of her first exams and she was as prepared as she could have possibly been. Defense Against the Dark Arts ~ A Even though this was both her parents’ favorite subject, Verine honestly didn’t care as much. She always paid attention and studied diligently for their sakes, but her heart was never really in it. Herbology ~ O > O Verine started liking herbology when she realized how useful it was to Potions, and from then on she put great effort into not only knowing and memorizing plant properties, but learning to care for them. She had a particular knack for working with flowers and was occasionally teased as "the Rose Whisperer". History of Magic ~ A > EE Raised by a historian and being constantly drilled on the importance of learning history and context, Verine always expected herself to excel in History. Her performance up to her fifth year had always been excellent; however, with two other exams the same day, she found herself a little distracted. (NEWTs) With a clear two days to review and focus on History, Verine was determined to get better than the A she received for her OWL. Even though her grandfather never said anything, Verine felt like she had personally disappointed both him and her History professor with a mere A. Potions ~ O > O (taken in 4th year) Potions had quickly become Verine’s favorite and best subject and she had plenty of experience practicing and experimenting at home. Initially joking with her professor about taking it early, she actually did and upon leaving the exam, she was almost disappointed it wasn’t harder. Transfiguration ~ A Transfiguration had always been a tricky subject for Verine-- she was diligent about understanding the theory, but never quite as good at actually casting the spells. Alchemy ~ O > O Without having to worry about potions OWLs that year, Verine turned her passion to alchemy, which proved a much greater challenge but just as rewarding. Divination ~ O > O Verine picked up divination unexpectedly, but divination appealed to her trust of intuition in a way Potions simply couldn't. It quickly became a topic of fascination and her go-to studying while waiting for a potion to brew. Arithmancy ~ EE > EE She took up Arithmancy in her fourth year to supplement her Divination studies and found it an excellent--and more rigorous-- foil to divination. Healing ~ EE Verine took up Healing in 3rd year because she was still falling off her broom at every turn. The potions aspect of Healing was a point of natural interest and excellence, and her charms work was decent enough not to hinder her continuing.
Total in 5th year: 10. Total scores: 4 O, 3 EE, 4 A.
All are EE/ O: This was a very strengths-focused program of NEWTs, designed more to show off her strengths than to aim at a particular profession (which honestly she wasn’t planning very well). Verine’s OWLs and interests demonstrate two primary spheres of focus and excellence: Potions, through which she understands Herbology, Alchemy and Healing; and Divination, with Arithmancy as a support subject. History is a tertiary priority adopted out of respect and devotion to her mentor figures. This selection is also reflected in her OWL scores with the lucky Charms replaced by a more consistent History.
She dropped her Healing NEWT at the beginning of seventh year to help devote time to studying for this core. Her grandmother’s passing soon after caused her to seclude herself in studying as well, determined to make the rest count.
Other Electives/ Experiences with them Wizarding Law: Verine took a few weeks of Wizarding Law in her third year in honor of her grandfather who had served on the Wizengamot. She decided very quickly and astutely she would rather not.
Wandlore: Verine took a year of Wandlore in her fourth year in honor of her grandmother who had a made a living gathering materials for wands and helping craft them. It was fairly interesting, but she decided to focus on her other electives moving forward.
Mind Magic: Her Divination professor recommended that Verine take Mind Magic her sixth year for whatever reason.
Apparation: Was a nightmare. If she thought Flying and the constant visits to the Hospital Wing were annoying, apparition attempts were downright hazardous. After seeing her death by splinching too many times in divination and arithmancy, Verine decided to not continue trying apparition. (Much to the relief of the instructor, who was astounded at how many apparition and flying mishaps she managed to get into just off sheer bad luck.)

She also loves a good joke or prank, as long as said prank doesn't hinder anyone's work.
CREATIVE Verine's signature touch is her penchant for mixing things together-- from soaps and perfumes as a child, to foods and clothing as an adult, to herbs and elixirs as a potioneer, she likes mashing things up as much as she does mastering the original. As a young student, she realized that replicating things was near impossible because after mixing things every bottle was different that what it was labeled and nothing was pure anymore. More than once, she’d also lost a favorite book or misplaced something she could have used. Her professors had good tricks, and encouraged making organization and careful labeling an important prerequisite to actually mixing anything. She’s become quite fond of putting things in boxes, literally and metaphorically, if only so it’s easier to note what has fallen out and mixed with other things.

Other times, they’d pile in shoddily a week late. She also tends to be late for everything, as she'll get wrapped up in something else interesting. This has gotten better with her time at Hogwarts, but it's still an ongoing struggle.
✽DREAMS ■ Achieving work-life balance or work-life melding. If it exists.

Favorites Potion Babbling Beverage -- A potion that causes uncontrollable speaking of nonsense. Harmless hilarity. Food Sweets, Anything fusion style. Clothes A sparkly dress made of different panels of fabric, with different style embroidery on each panel and tie-dye pumps. Accessory Scarves and capes
Typicals Outfit Blouse, long skirt and a robe or apron. Pants can be substituted if it's a gardening day.
Misc Wand Apple wood = rich, red wood. Mixes poorly with dark magic, possessor long lived and well loved. unusual ability to converse with magical beings in their native language (partial explanation for how she charmed Li Jiayo and Zexing despite the language barrier) unicorn hair = consistent and loyal even if not strongest core. (Verine's a fairly poor caster anyways) Patronus pine marten = small but fierce. Symbolism = independent, honest, awkward, intellectual. Verine feels safest in the intellectual pursuit and study: She's a positivist, so it ties faith with study. Plus it takes all of her attention so she can't worry herself when attending to work.
Best Memories:
An 8 year old year old Sona exploring her potioneer office and magic for the first time. The morning after getting engaged and explaining magic to her fiancé. Recreating Babbling Beverage with none of the original ingredients but being super happy anyways. Walking out of her Potions OWL at the end of 4th year, knowing she aced that even though she took a year early.
Worst memories:
Fighting with her husband about magic in the months after Sona was born. How empty the estate felt after her grandmother's funeral. Elmond not making it out of the Winchester Massacre
Lyrics I am the voice in the fields when the summer's gone The dance of the leaves when the autumn winds blow Ne'er do I sleep thoughout all the cold winter long I am the force that in springtime will grow ~The Voice. (Switch when she's like 65).
possible collaboration with Tiffany Stanford, potioneer Blocks the mind from legilimens for a few hours. Useful for people who are not accomplished occlumens if they are going into a situation where they might need mental protection. Sleep/ dream version and daytime version. Inspired by her 6th year encounters with utterly failing legilimancy practice.
✽Meditation Potion
UNCONFIRMED possible collaboration with Savannah Hastings, potioneer Potion that helps drinker uncover their thoughts for further reflection. Divination+potions
Verine's office resembles a small library at first, with a bookcase dominating the smaller wall. The shelves on the other wall though, are filled with potions. A giant painting frame by the entrance usually displays a pleasant forest or beachside view or shows off photos. Towards the back of the space, opposite the bottom of the steps, is a door leading to a locked herb and miscellaneous equipment storage. A large table sits before a long couch, watched over by a bowl of snacks, pad of parchment, and a small cactus with notes stuck on its spines. The pot labels it "Glob XIV".
Multiple cauldrons and Verine's desk are located on a modest mezzanine. Here the walls are covered with notes and musings on her latest projects, most related to potions but some related to history or divination. A low banister usually separates the space, but the area can also be sealed off separately to the rest of the office via a transfiguration.
Verine herself can usually be found drafting something up at the desk or brewery or reading up on other potions research on the couch. The brewery is blocked off if she really cannot take interruptions at the moment; in these cases, or in case she is out, there is a note and her usual office hours posted prominently in the picture frame area.
Away message:
Hi! Sorry I'm not available at the moment. Please leave a note and contact information with the cactus and I'll reply the next time I'm in. Feel free to help yourself to snacks or books!

Ongoing research:
✽Dittany
Collaboration with Tiffany Stanford, potioneer Dittany is expensive and rare but necessary in healing potions around the world. Finding a suitable substitute could help make healing potions more available?
✽Piano in a bottle
Inspired by Sonora saying there’s only one piano at Hogwarts Would be useful for practicing music without an actual piano around. Either meant to be poured on a surface that transforms the surface into a keyboard/ music-producing surface OR a drinking potion where fingers play as though they were touching a piano. Initial calibration would be needed: first three notes played correspond to a C-major chord. Might be better as a spell? Need to find someone versed in spell creation
Collaborations welcome!
Prior research:
2022 - 2042: Verine’s early work was in basic research on magical properties of various herbs in potions and applied research in alternative brewing methods. She has an academic reputation of taking existing potions and recreating them with different ingredients, making either more potent versions, or easier to produce (either in method or ingredient cost), rather than creating new potions. She occasionally showed up on projects relating to divination, healing and history, but publishes primarily in potions and herbology.
Her proudest paper, is Winchester, V. (2026) “Alternative Preparation of Babbling Beverage”. Potioneer Quarterly. 191: 52-65. While not her most cited or known paper, it faithfully recreates her favorite potion, the harmless Babbling Beverage, with none of the original ingredients.
2043 + : Although still very entrenched in substitution research, Verine also started exploring original potion development.

Potioneering schedule
Generally ~Verine's everyday schedule is highly dependent on her project, any meetings, and what she's doing at that particular step.
El wakes up at 6:30, around the same time Sona does and they'll go on morning walks or he'll feed the birds, do some reading or craft work before getting breakfast and biking to work at 8:15 sharp. Verine wakes up anywhere between 6 and 8:15. If she's awake in time, she'll make breakfast or lunch, but will up up to say goodbye when he leaves at 8:15.
She usually writes and designs in the morning, brews and experiments. Gets lunch around 13 or 14:00 then does the more routine brewing and reading. Usually schedules her meetings or garden visits in the afternoon, when possible.
El works 9-18:00 and gets back around 19:00, sometimes a little later. Generally Verine's office hours are 9 - 19:00 with anywhere from 15 minutes to 1.5 hours for lunch. If she's really caught up El will message her, but she's gotten much better at leaving a message or letting him know when she'll be late. They alternate cooking.
Saturday she's usually more relaxed and spends it restocking, organizing, reading.
Tuesday and Sundays are her days off, although sometimes she'll still go in for a meeting. El has the same days off, although sometimes he works weekends.

She has designed her Hogwarts office to resemble her old potioneer office and generally does her potioneering work from here. She'll talk with students on the couch, and does grading on the stair or table. The mezzanine is reserved solely for potioneer work and development.
El works 9-18:00 and gets back around 19:00, sometimes a little later. Usually she leaves pretty on time and is eager to get home. Sometimes she'll work or read in the evenings, but is usually tries to just unwind.

OWLs and NEWTs
CORE Astronomy ~ A
Astronomy was Verine’s final OWL and the only one that day; she crammed diligently the entire day, but honestly the prospect of being done with Astronomy was more exciting than the subject. She felt rather bad for in retrospect because it was sometimes useful for Divination, but the scores were what they were and she was very excited to be done.
Charms ~ EE
Verine had never been a poor student at Charms because of its partial uses in Potions and her strong theoretical knowledge, but she still thinks the “EE” stands for "exceedingly and extra lucky”; it was one of her first exams and she was as prepared as she could have possibly been.
Defense Against the Dark Arts ~ A
Even though this was both her parents’ favorite subject, Verine honestly didn’t care as much. She always paid attention and studied diligently for their sakes, but her heart was never really in it.
Herbology ~ O > O
Verine started liking herbology when she realized how useful it was to Potions, and from then on she put great effort into not only knowing and memorizing plant properties, but learning to care for them. She had a particular knack for working with flowers and was occasionally teased as "the Rose Whisperer".
History of Magic ~ A > EE
Raised by a historian and being constantly drilled on the importance of learning history and context, Verine always expected herself to excel in History.
Potions ~ O > O
(OWL taken in 4th year) Potions had quickly become Verine’s favorite and best subject and she had plenty of experience practicing and experimenting at home. Initially joking with her professor about taking it early, she actually did and upon leaving the exam, she was almost disappointed it wasn’t harder.
Transfiguration ~ A
Transfiguration had always been a tricky subject for Verine-- she was diligent about understanding the theory, but never quite as good at actually casting the spells.
ELECTIVES Alchemy ~ O > O
Without having to worry about potions OWLs that year, Verine turned her passion to alchemy, which proved a much greater challenge but just as rewarding.
Divination ~ O > O
Verine picked up divination unexpectedly, but divination appealed to her trust of intuition in a way Potions simply couldn't. It quickly became a topic of fascination and her go-to studying while waiting for a potion to brew.
Arithmancy ~ EE > EE
She took up Arithmancy in her fourth year to supplement her Divination studies and found it an excellent--and more rigorous-- foil to divination.
Healing ~ EE
Verine took up Healing in 3rd year because she was still falling off her broom at every turn. The potions aspect of Healing was a point of natural interest and excellence, and her charms work was decent enough not to hinder her continuing.
She dropped her Healing NEWT at the beginning of seventh year to help devote time to studying for this core. Her grandmother’s passing soon after caused her to seclude herself in studying as well, determined to make the rest count.
