User ImageThis newfound love of books was something that Matilda hadn’t thought she would ever have. Honestly, the fact that Taila had been right and that there were whole worlds hidden in the pages of such seemingly useless objects…was fascinating.

She had been so skeptical when Talia had given her the first one and even though the first few pages had been really boring…it had gotten better. The hybrid had been utterly surprised when the book ended after only an hour or so of reading, and after that…she was in the library almost every day.

Today had been no different, and now Matilda had her nose stuck in her newest book, of course not paying any attention to anything. She didn’t noticed she was about to run headlong into another geist hybrid until she had already bumped into the other freshling and was on the floor, blinking in confusion.

“Oh!”

Her eyes focused for a moment on the small tendrils at the freshling’s forehead and then focused on the colors of his own eyes, bouncing between one to the other, a smile spreading across her face. “Hi! I’m Matilda! Do you want to be friends? You’re just like me!”

Mostly. Kind of. Enough that she was excited.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Tirishi had been just walking along peacefully, lost in thought as he considered his day. He was heading towards the door, so he could be picked up by Mommy, and go home for the night. His route took him past the Academy's main library, and he did not have any thoughts about anyone who might be coming out... He did not usually see anyone here at this time of day, when he was leaving, so he did not expect anyone.

It had been a good day, so far, too, so he did not expect anything to happen to ruin that. His Mommy would be happy to hear he had done REALLY well on a test today, and he had a big, beautiful gold star for it, too!

And then someone was smacking into him, and he stumbled back, with an 'OOF!', but he did not fall over. He just took a few deep breaths, freezing, and fighting to keep his balance. He stared at the girl that he did not know, his eyes confused as she began to talk to him, excitedly. He was just like her? What...? He blinked in confusion, then looked her up and down, before figuring it out. She meant they were both part geist. He couldn't see anything else similar... But apparently being geist was what mattered to her? He wasn't sure.

"Um. H...hi. I'm Tirishi. I... Friends? I guess?"

He sounded so very confused, because to be honest, he was.

Matilda got slowly to her feet, hand rubbing at her backside for a moment, trying to get off the dust from her fall. She took a moment to pick her book up, holding it against her chest and finally grinning again. “That’s really nice of you, I mean it though, I’m sorry I ran into you…I’m not going to walk around reading anymore, I don’t think…that was kind of dumb now that I think about it.”

The hybrid’s smile brightened as she thought about the fact that she had made yet another friend. This made three which was three more than she had ever figured on getting. “You have really pretty eyes by the way! I like them a lot! What house are you in? What do you like to do…oh…were…you going somewhere? Am I bothering you?”

She hoped not, but he looked as though he didn’t quite know what to make of her. Which…was slightly understandable. She was acting like a fool, blundering around and walking into strangers...then out of the blue asking them to be her friend...it was almost...creepy. Kind of.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Tiri tilted his head, listening to her, blinking slowly as he listened to everything she said. "Mmm Well, a good book can be very enticing, but... best not to read when accidents can happen. What if you... fell down some stairs or something?" He couldn't think of anything else to suggest, but that one sounded like it would be plenty painful, and also could happen here, on campus, if someone was reading while they were walking. Plenty of the buildings had staircases, after all, and that could be really bad!

The comment about his eyes made him widen them, surprised, because no one had told him they were pretty before. Her almost bombardment of questions, though, had him a little overwhelmed. She wanted to be his friend and know everything, but she hadn't even introduced herself. It was utterly outside of what Tiri understood.

"Um. I am in Enoch, and you?" He figured it was polite to ask her in turn, right? Right. What did he like to do... when? Where? Somehow that question felt unfinished, though perhaps he just was confused and did not know. What she segued into, however, was clear, and easy to answer. "I was heading towards the entrance! Mommy picks me up after school, there, with my siblings! I usually get there a little early, but I like to sit and watch everyone coming and going while I wait."

There, something he liked to do. Hopefully that made the energetic girl happy?

For a moment, the small hybrid blinked, a feeling almost akin to jealousy overtaking her. “You…get to go to a home at the end of the day? That’s so cool!” To be wanted. Wasn’t that everyones dream though?

“I don’t…have anyone so I just live here, which…which is fine. I’m in Arkham and I really like it a lot. But…”

She seemed curious now and almost seemed a little more subdued. “You have siblings? What are they like? A-are they nice like you are?” Family was never something that Matilda had thought about. Or rather, she had tried to actively not think about it. It was easier that way. Less confusing and less painful to think that she was just…here one day. Not abandoned and brought into the orphanage but…

She couldn’t deny that she was envious of Tiri and his seemingly large family. Siblings to play with! Ready made friends right there at any time…

It sounded amazing.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Tiri blinked in surprise at her question, then bit his lip, feeling a little guilty. He knew that a lot of his fellow students did not have homes to go to, he KNEW that, and should think about that before he spoke. He did not want to hurt the feelings of anyone, and he had to guess it had to be hard, not having parents (or just a mom, in his case, but still!) in their life, let alone a home that was not shared with a ton of other kids. He was about to apologize, then she simply said it was cool, and he blinked, unsure for a moment about what to say.

After some careful thought, he finally spoke again. "I mean, it is nice... But I bet living here is like an eternal sleepover, right? You have all kinds of people to spend time with, and can go visit friends anytime... You are not at a house away from them. Sometimes I wonder if I miss out on a lot of the fun?"

He doubted it, honestly, but he was trying to make the other kid feel better.

He considered the question about his siblings, trying to figure out how to explain it. "W... well we are all kind of different from each other? I mean, like people are, I guess? I do not think any of them are mean, though. I certainly have not seen signs of it..."

Matilda nodded slowly. Intrigued.

Finally she shrugged, though still smiled. “I mean, that’s a neat way to look at it! A giant sleepover but…it’s not actually that great really, at least I don’t think so. But…I…I don’t hate it here like I used to. And I have friends now. I have you and Talia and it’s really nice.”

Finally she just kind of kicked at the ground. “But…one day, I’m going to have a family, just like you do…I just…have to be better, right? Or…” She shrugged, then clutched at her book a little tighter. “That’s really neat. You’re really lucky, I think. And I’m glad you’re happy! That’s awesome.”

She suddenly wanted to go and just hide though. She wanted to be wanted too. “Um…but! There are fun things here…there really are. Sometimes. If you have friends.” Matilda didn’t want Tiri to feel bad, it wasn’t his fault that she hadn’t been wanted but…but things were better! They were getting better.

They would be better.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Tiri kept his head to one side as he listened, taking in all she was saying. It had never occurred to him, before, that some of the kids here might actually hate living here at all. It was kind of a big revelation, and his eyes widened as he tried to consider what that might mean for some of his classmates.

He felt bad, honestly, at the idea of kids who might want families and not be able to have them, who might feel lonely in the big crowd of kids that lived in the school. But still, if being her friend helped, he was glad he had said yes. "Well, having friends is always good. It helps make things better for everyone, I think."

And then she said she had to be better, and he frowned, his brows coming together at that. "I do not think you need to be better! I think you are fine the way you are. I think you just need to find the right people. But that is why they have the Academy, right? Because not everyone out there, apparently, wants to adopt kids, so this way they have a home. But still. I believe in you. You will have a family. You just need to be yourself."

That was what he had heard, anyways. They had to be themselves, because people like you better when you are genuine and honest.

"You should show me some of the things that you can do with friends here. I mostly just see the school side of things, since I do not live here."

Matilda was quiet for a long moment, and finally just nodded, beginning to smile once again. “You’re right. And I would love to! Maybe…some weekend you could stay over? We can explore the academy at night and try really hard not to get caught, it could be a really fun adventure! I can introduce you to my friend Talia, she’s a geist too! We can…maybe we can all be friends together!”

They could be their own family. A school family. Friends so tight knit that they didn’t ever want to be apart from one another.

That would make her very happy indeed.

“Oh, I shouldn’t keep you, your mommy is waiting, right?” She waved, seeming excited now. Planning how to get them all together. How to perhaps even grow her circle of friends into something wider. This was a good way to fill her heart with happiness, so why shouldn’t she embrace it.

“I’ll see you soon, okay? We should meet up for lunch really soon!”

It would be great. She was sure of it. They would be friends and one day…she would have a family. She would make sure of that.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."I would love to meet your friend Talia." Tirishi had no idea who Talia was or if they would get along, but he was willing to meet Matilda's other friend to make her happy. "And I will ask Mommy if I can spend a weekend or something sometime soon. I have never done a sleepover with anyone, really, so I am sure she will let me! And exploring at night sounds fun!"

Tirishi was smiling at the idea, because it actually sounded like a lot of fun, and something he had never done before, so all in all, he felt like this was a wonderful plan and he was going to start talking to Mommy about it, tonight!

Not like "MOMMY I GOT A NEW FRIEND I WANT TO DO A SLEEPOVER" though. More like mention Matilda, talk about her and how lonely she seemed... then tomorrow talk more about her, over the course of a few days, and then ask.

Get Mommy used to the idea of a friend he wanted to spend that much time with. He did not want to surprise Mommy or upset her.

And then he blinked as he realized that Matilda was right, he needed to go meet up with Mommy. "Oh! Oh yes, I got so caught up talking to you that I almost forgot it was time to go. I do not want to make Mommy worry." He gave her a bright smile for reminding him.

He tilted his head, and then nodded. "Yes, that sounds good! I will be here tomorrow, of course. I hope to see you soon!" He gave her a wave, and a quick hug, then ran to meet his Mommy, a bright smile on his face.

This has been an unexpected, but WONDERFUL, end to his day!
