While Cavansite had met with Axinite several times now…she had never been summoned before. Or, not summoned but asked to visit him in his office…which felt a lot like being summoned, and a strange feeling of apprehension twisted in her stomach. She stood outside of the office door, swallowing heavily and finally poked her head inside, managing a small smile.
“General King Axinite. You called for me? I got the message and…and I’m here.”
The new tablets were a marvel, and she appreciated how easy they were to use but…
But even that small conceit wasn’t enough to dispel the worry that was starting to take over. Had she done something wrong? Cavansite knew she was walking a very thin line between a traitor and a loyal member of the Negaverse…but she hadn’t yet crossed that line…not all the way.
…Sure she had thought about it but…but there was no way that Axinite would have known that but…
But maybe this was about Tanais. Maybe they had brought her back. Maybe he wanted to tell her that Cinnabar was back and…and suddenly hope swelled within her.
If that was the case…all of her doubts…all of her worries would go away, she was sure.
With a much more assured manner, Cavansite entered the room and gave a small bow to the red haired male. “How can I assist you, General King.”
Her eyes flickered around the room, hoping for some sign of Cinnabar. Hoping for some sign of…of something. Some sign that she wasn’t in trouble.

Axinite offered the same, standard smile he always seemed to have on his face when he had an audience, but there was something different about it. His desk was meticulous, and everything seemed to have been organized in a strangely cold way. There were no cookies on the desk, no tea brewing. Just him, waiting. He gestured for her to take a seat. “I hope you can forgive the summons, I know it was a bit impromptu. It’s just,” his eyes never strayed from hers. “I’m afraid I’ve had some unsettling news and I needed to speak with you immediately. Please, come sit down. We’re not strangers, you and I. In fact, I find that I’m rather fond of you. It’s why I’m so concerned about all of this.”

Cavansite closed the door behind her as was her habit and walked towards the desk, taking a seat. “Of course, I know that we’re not strangers…” There was something wrong. Something was in the air and whatever hope that had began to bubble within Cavansite, whatever hope that Cinnabar was back or that this was going to be any sort of a good meeting evaporated. “What’s going on, Sir? Is everything okay…?” She didn’t like the way he was looking at her, and her every instinct screamed to look away. To run. Something was definitely wrong and she felt cornered. Like a mouse in a trap and…she had let this happen. But. No. She couldn’t let him see that she was afraid. That she was worried. That would be against every survival instinct. “I’m fond of you too, General King. Please.” Cavansite was relatively happy that her voice remained steady. “Please just tell me what’s going on, if I have displeased you, tell me what I have to do to fix it…am I in trouble?” She couldn’t stop the tremor that slipped out along with the last few words. It was stupid. She was being stupid. She hadn’t done anything wrong. Yet.

Axinite watched, and listened, and then, he sighed. The smile faded and he tapped his fingers thoughtfully atop the desk before him. “Someone’s written me a report about you. Naturally, I wanted to deny it.” He slid a sheet of paper from a stack and slid it over. At the top, her name. Several paragraphs of report—all about her, were printed on the page. Any identifying names had been redacted but the information Axinite had been given was all painfully clear. Someone thought she was a potential traitor. A threat. Someone who might run away. And worse— join the enemy. “I was hoping you could tell me you’ve just made an enemy somewhere who wants to hurt you. Ideally I’d like to hear that you’ve got a rival amongst us that is so threatened by your prowess they are trying to instill distrust and contempt towards you.” His own emotions were tempered—polite, but not warm. “I was hoping you could tell me that this isn’t true.” But he had already expected the worst. He read it in her demeanor. Her posture, her tone, her expression. She was nervous, as if she had something to hide. Arguably, most people were nervous when he called them to his office. Regardless of his efforts to be courteous and polite and kind and welcoming he was still a General King. He was still a man to be feared. Especially if you were planning on betraying the Negaverse.

Cavansite’s eyes flashed back and forth along the paper, taking in each and every word, feeling as though the world was suddenly crashing down on her the more she read. Someone had…turned her in. She truly had walked right into a den of wolves tonight. Had he noticed that the starseeds that she normally adorned herself with were gone? She supposed that he had but…but she could have easily just used them for…or energy but… But whoever had written the report had claimed to have seen her giving them to the Cosmos knight. She felt sick, suddenly dizzy and for a moment she looked up at Axinite and swallowed, her guilt evident in her eyes. “I haven’t left though. I’m still here. I’m still…holding on.” Her hands were trembling as she slid the paper back onto the desk. “I’m not going to be a traitor. But…I’m not going to deny that I have been feeling a little…off center. Cinnabar’s betrayal shook me…and I’m still…I’m trying, sir. I am trying. I don’t…want to be like her. I don’t want to disappoint you.” Her voice sounded desperate. She felt desperate. “I’m sorry. I’ll be better from here on out. I promise. I won’t fail you, Axinite. I swear it.”

She was afraid. He derived no joy from the emotion, it was just a fact. He was not lying when he said that he had grown fond of Cavansite, and to find that this report was factual… He had known it already. Wanting something to not be true was human, but he couldn’t deny the facts. She couldn’t deny them. He sighed heavily. “I know, Cavansite. You’re a good officer. We would be at an extreme disadvantage to lose you. And, selfishly, I’d miss you and your reports. I don’t want to punish you. But if I do nothing, you understand what poor judgment that would be. But I believe you. I know you want to be better. I know you don’t want to fail me. So let’s go over this.” He tapped two fingers on the paper before her. “Why don’t you tell me what was going on so I can understand what happened?” Now, his voice was soothing again. “You don’t have to be afraid. It’s my job to make you stronger. To make you better. We are humans—imperfect creatures who make mistakes every day. We need only learn from them. And, I have made a mistake as well. I let you walk this path. I didn’t see where you were headed. So let us both learn from this, let us improve. Let us grow stronger. All right?” He reached across the desk and took her hand, giving her a small, reassuring squeeze. “Would you like some tea?”

Cavansite relaxed at his words, and when he reached over and took her hands, she knew things were going to be all right. She wasn’t in trouble. He wasn’t...angry and he was offering her some tea.
A much more genuine smile crossed her face and she nodded, returning the squeeze. “I would love some tea, thank you, Axinite.”
She drew in a breath and nodded. “What do you want to know. I won’t hold anything back.” There was nothing to fear. He was just worried about her. He wasn’t going to punish her and...and they would get her back on track, where she belonged.
...This was what she had wanted anyway, right? This was what she had been trying to do for herself.
“I’ve just been messed up. Confused. I’ve spent so much time worrying about Cinnabar and...I don’t know. I’ve just been confused. I’ve been listening to what they’ve been saying. Other knights. Other traitors and...I know that I shouldn’t be but...I don’t know. Something inside of me has just...turned soft. And I’m just not sure how to turn it off now that it’s been done…”
Cavansite swallowed, feeling somewhat humiliated, but at the same time, somewhat relieved. It was good to be able to get it out. And Axinite would help her. He wanted to help her. She just had to accept his help.

Axinite kept his hand on Cavansite’s and moved easily; while there was no warm kettle in sight, he pulled two cups out of a drawer in his desk—and a canister. He opened it and poured two cups of warm, flowery smelling tea. He didn’t spill a drop and almost never allowed his gaze to stray from the General. When he was finished, he closed the canister and tucked it off to the side of his desk. He took one cup for himself and slid the other to her. Every few seconds he nodded. “They are deceptive, are they not?” he prompted softly. “I suppose I should have worried, sending you into their clutches. Many of them have magic, you know. Designed to simulate complacency. Friendship. Obedience.” He shrugged. “I’m sure it must be confusing, wondering why she made that choice. I’m sure you’ve wondered if it was the right choice, if it was something you should look into? But, trying to understand something can sometimes lead us to making desperate, illogical choices. I wonder if, in your haste to understand her, you found yourself trying to think like her. Trying to be like her so you can comprehend why she would leave this life.” His words were soft, suggestive. “You were investing yourself so deeply that you got caught up in things. Perhaps you simply didn’t spend enough time doing what you enjoy, doing what makes you you. It’s a poison, tricking you. Eroding away at your thoughts. They paint a pretty picture but at the end of the day, what do they have to offer that we don’t?” It was another question; he was fishing for information, trying to understand better who had swayed her—and how.

Cavansite took the cup in her free hand and inhaled the sweet scent, giving a small sigh as she took a long sip, enjoying the warmth that spread through her body.
“They are, yes. They’re good at spinning their lies. There was one who...was part of us, and I offered to try and bring him back, but he said he wasn’t welcome because he doesn’t like the Dark Mirror Court? But...but I knew that you would rather him be part of us instead of being a knight but…”
She swallowed, looking a little unhappy. “I did try. I’ve tried as often as I could. I kept telling myself that I was doing the right thing, opening up to them so I could persuade them back to us but...I don’t know. There’s so many of them and only one one of me and I can only do so much...and I guess at some point their words just...started swaying me.”
The hand holding the cup was shaking slightly and she downed the rest of her tea in one large gulp.
“I went to Mars. With Cinnabar--Tanais. She showed me what...what you get when you purify and...it was interesting and…”
And she was walking too close to the edge.
“I know I’m pretty much just a traitor. I’m so sorry, Axinite...please, please help me. I don’t want to be a traitor.”

He nodded, observing her silently. He reached for the canister and refilled her cup of tea. His own was untouched so far but he had only poured it out of politeness. His hand was still gently wrapped around hers. “It is easy to be swayed by promises and novelty. But at the end of the day, their worlds are still dead. By their own hand. It is unfortunate, but I suppose anyone with the heart of an adventurer would be compelled to venture new lands. With Earth as it is, there is something charming about those other worlds. Devastated as they may already be.” He shrugged but did not expand on any personal interest in space exploration. “Not liking the Dark Mirror Court is not a deal breaker. There are many that find them unfavorable. Though, we do follow Queen Laurelite’s command—and Metallia’s—that we leave them in relative peace. There is no reason to give them any conflict when we have so many knights and Senshi to worry about. I’ve always thought it was a bit sad, that they think they’re fighting for the right thing. That they are so convinced they are justified. They grasp at strings, looking for some meaning, some justification. They have no one—and yet, we have Metallia, who has guided us without fail. Who is our support, our protection, our power.” He paid attention to her eyes, her breathing, her hands. “It is in time of doubt that we can rely on her. It is not wrong to have questions. It is not wrong to explore what the other side has to offer. It is only wrong if you let them poison you. There can be benefits to walking so closely among them. They trust you. They are looser with their secrets. They want to ‘help’ you. They share information, assistance. They let you know them. They are weak. But, that is when you must strike, Cavansite.” Another gentle squeeze of his hand on hers. “You are not a traitor until you betray us. And you are still ours, Cavansite. Are you not?”

“Thank you.” Cavansite took the second cup of tea and thought about his words for a long moment, feeling somewhat reassured. She wasn’t a full blown traitor until...she left. And she hadn’t yet left...and she wouldn’t leave. She would stay and continue to make Painite proud. Wasn’t the only reason that Painite was even thinking of leaving too...wasn’t that because the woman thought that’s what she wanted? No. She would go on serving Metallia and doing the work that she loved.
“You’re right, of course. I have the upper hand. I should be using that to my advantage. I’m trying to take on too many things at once, Axinite. That’s what my issue is.” She kept her eyes on his and managed a soft smile, returning the pressure on his hand.
“I’m...glad you called me for this meeting, I feel better. I’m not a traitor yet, and I suppose...I didn’t think of it that way before now, but I appreciate it.”
Quietly she took another sip of the refilled teacup. “I’m not a traitor, and I have no plans on becoming a traitor. I know where I belong.”

Axinite smiled again. “I know, Cavansite. I had faith in you. I hope that in the future you know that if you are ever having doubts, or any troubling thoughts, you can come to me. No judgment,” he assured. “I only want to help you. Perhaps we can take this opportunity to go over some of your methods—some of the people you’ve interacted with so far? I’d like to hear which ones are the most troublesome. We can work on readjusting the workload you’ve been given.” He seemed relaxed; his smile had returned and he seemed like he was genuinely invested in both her research and working out how to lighten the stress and workload she had taken upon herself so far. “We’ll figure out what we can do to lessen that workload. I won’t have you taking on too many things at once again, that was my mistake. But we’ll work through this, together. I’ll make sure you have the resources you need to succeed.” He drew in a breath and sat up a little straighter. “I have a solution to your problem. A safeguard against their manipulation. It’s painless, effective, and it comes with a boost of energy—and it brings you just a little closer to Metallia. It’s not something we like to advertise, it’s not necessarily particularly risky but it is a bit of an effort to make. I wouldn’t trust it to just anyone, Cavansite.” He offered her a gentle look. “I’d like to trust you with it, though. If you’ll humor me. I think it could really help you.”

Cavansite was nodding, trying to think about what she could say, did she even have any worthwhile projects that she was working on? It didn’t feel like it.
But...she felt reassured until...until his tone changed. For some reason, she was suddenly on guard and she watched him for a long moment, frowning slightly. Nodding slowly, Cavansite watched the General King, the frown growing just a little deeper as she waited for him to elaborate.
“What...sort of thing is this, Axinite? Would it be something that I’ve heard about…?”
Because she didn’t like where her mind had gone to automatically...because that would have meant that he did think she was a traitor after all.

“Probably,” Axinite replied. There was a bit of sympathy in his voice but even now he seemed reassuring, supportive. He wanted her to be agreeable. He wanted her to make this easy for the both of them. “You are in Special Operatives and, as a General, I know you’ve been entrusted with information we wouldn’t pass around to just any officer. You know about the youmaglia.” He watched her cautiously, still trying to read her. His demeanor was unreadable, his masks impenetrable. He was speaking about it as easily as if they were discussing the tea he’d served her. “I suppose they might have a bit of a bad reputation though, given their function. But you’d trust me, of course, to use one responsibly. I was, after all, the head of a very prestigious Special Operatives branch not so very long ago.” A shadow crossed his face, but it was gone nearly as soon as it had arrived. Now was not the time to reminisce, not the time to show weakness. “I know how to utilize them effectively. You wouldn’t even know it was there.”

Cavansite tugged her hand from Axinite’s, looking uncertain and almost afraid once again. “...So you did call me here for punishment…”
No matter how reassuring he had been. No matter what he had been saying...he didn’t trust her. He really did think she was someone who was highly at risk for defecting...and honestly at this moment, she wanted nothing more than to leave the office and start running.
“With all due respect, Axinite...I would rather not have one...I...you said that you trusted me...I just...I suppose that I don’t understand why you would have said that and yet you still want to use something on me that is normally reserved for traitors and those who don’t want to be obedient.”
Her body was beginning to betray her, the fear and adrenaline that were mixing as they ran through her veins causing the hands holding the teacup to shake slightly.
Finally though, Cavansite forced herself to look up at the General King, swallowing hard. “...Do I have a choice in the matter?”
