Fisher didn't do fine work, like knitting or sewing or anything that involved extreme dexterity with her fingers. She could also barely read and write, likely as a result of living her entire life on a boat and not being allowed to tend the books. Most fishers she knew didn't have a need for such fancy things like being literate and honestly she was quite content with all that. No one at the Weyr had thus far placed a heavy emphasis on being able to read thus far and so Fisher didn't think about it.

So why, why, was she in a room with a list before her and a writing implement in her hand? Doing candidates chores were fine, but doing something like inventory in a stuffy room that likely hadn't been opened in over a Turn? And with a paper she needed to read and check off as she searched for things? Maybe she needed to pull a Torin and faint, leaving whomever came in to check on her with the sight of an unconscious body (and an incomplete workload).

That...that wouldn't be good though, since Fisher prided herself on getting tasks done and being completely dependable. Plus she didn't like the idea of lying if someone asked what happened, or the whole deal of flaking out and not following a simple order.

But she couldn't read so what even was she supposed to do?

Gru had just finished his weekly check-in with Gr’del, and was in oddly good spirits for once. He’d done well the last sevenday, with minimal confrontation and thorough completion of all tasks put to him. From there, he went to Headwoman Padmia for work to do. She usually put him to some sort of labor, but she seemed to be in a hurry this time, barely even glancing his way as she told him where to go. Had she been able to stop for a moment and recollect exactly where Gru was in his studies, she would have remembered that he was barely capable of writing his own name correctly.

Logically, inventory was possibly the least appropriate task for a boy such as this one, but he’d been given an order, and he would attempt to follow it to the best of his ability. He walked into the room where the girl named Fisher was standing, looking as if she had lost her way. Frankly, he felt much the same. He approached slowly, making enough noise with his steps that he shouldn’t startle her if she failed to notice his arrival. “Padmia sent me to help with inventory,” he said.

Oh. Thank. Faranth. Thank Faranth and kiss a Wher. Fisher had been all of two steps away from shredding the paper and coming up with a convincing lie (about firelizards, it made sense) when the door to the room opened and someone else came in. Someone who she knew by face from candidate lessons - but even better, someone who was there to help.

"You. Can you read?" That was the only help she really needed, since the letters and numbers on the sheets she held swam together in a way that had her head already aching. "I can't." There wasn't much else for her to say in regards to that, though she did sort of vaguely motion towards the piles of things she was dividing and counting. Fisher was able to do the basics, inventory was a no brainer, but how was she supposed to mark things down if she had no idea which thing was what?
