The young kit had been hearing voices outside the brambly walls that made up the only, tiny home she'd ever known. There was her mother and father, and her two sisters. She knew those voices. But these were different. They came and went as they pleased near as she could tell.
Finally her mother was asleep this time when she awoke to more voices. Graykit made her rolly-polly way to the entrance where she'd seen her parents and various other adults come and go from. She poked her nose out of the entrance and blinked in surprise as the world suddenly expanded before her. It was so big! She drew in an unexpected breath as she keep looking up and up and up!

Goldenleaf could often be found near the nursery on her time off. She liked the company of the mothers and was fond of the gossip that came with bored and complacent cats. While they didn't often leave the clan base they were always the first to know the coming and going on clan encounters, and Goldenleaf shamefully liked to indulge in her stories. Besides, her own life was incredibly mundane, although she liked to keep it at that.
What she hadn't expected was one of the newest kits to come tumbling out of her nursery, eyes wide in awe. Instantly the warrior perked up, tail swishing gently as she bent down to nudge the grey kit.
"Oh hello, little one! I believe you're the first to come out. What are you doing?"

It was lucky she didn't have much time to take in the awe-inspiring surroundings which were quickly becoming a bit frightening. She hadn't expected it to be quite so large. A large golden queen who had been laying nearby unnoticed at first, stepped up and nudged her. Graykit focused her eyes on the unfamiliar female.
"Hello. I'm first because my sisters and mama are sleeping." She peered up closely at the new face. "Trying to find the voices I heard inside." Graykit wasn't sure this female was one she'd heard before.

She flicked her tail at the greeting, eyes curving upward with a smile. The voices? Oh, right, she had been chattering with one of the other queens right before they left. A good-natured laugh escaped her as she lowered herself onto her stomach.
"Ah, must have been me and my friend. Well, you found one of us. What a great explorer you are, little kit."

The little kit padded wobblily closer as the queen laid down. She gave the queen a curious sniff over. "What were you talking about? What do you do out here?" Was that all they did? Sit out here and talk?

How was she supposed to respond to that? What they had been talking about was fairly inappropriate for a child. Death, loss, and starvation? Yeah, no. Instead, Goldenleaf shook her head gently at the kit.
"Matters of the clan, which you don't quite need to worry about yet." She flopped onto her side for the kit, offering a better chance for them to see her eye-to-eye. "As for what we do? Well, quite a lot, in fact. Talking is one minor aspect, but we hunt and run patrols as well. We ensure our territory borders remain intruder-less and marked. Gathering herbs for the medicine cats den is also done during hunts, although at times we send out scouts to do just that. Exploration... hasn't been done in a bit, but it's another activity we as a clan enjoy."
Did kits look forward to becoming a warrior? She remember she had. Something about seeing her father come and go as a child had ignited a need for her to leave the den early, although that didn't happen. She had been kept in her den for the correct amount of time like everyone else.
However, this kit? Well, she was a hearty one, wasn't she?

She didn't quite understand what the queen meant by that, but shrugged it off in her kitten way. Graykit reached out a paw to bat at the whiskers that suddenly came within her reach. These were much more interesting than things she didn't understand.
"Will you talk with me out here?" She wanted to be counted among the big kits and involved in things. Nevermind that the queen was already talking to her. The world didn't feel as big and overwhelming as when she had another cat with her. Her mother would have been nice, but her mother was sleeping. Graykit found herself warming up to this queen.
"I'm Graykit."

She smiled down at the batting kitten, allowing them to have a go at her whiskers while she eyed them. When they said their name she chuckled; it was fitting.
"I'm Goldenleaf," she purred, using a paw to gently straighten Graykit's fur. "I'll talk to you about whatever it is you want to discuss. What is on your mind, little kit?"
It was fair to say Goldenleaf was also warming up to the kit, too.

Graykit played for a moment, easily mused by the long whiskers. "Goldenleaf. That's a nice name."
She puffed out her chest importantly that this queen would take her seriously. What did she want to talk about though? Her eyes roamed over the clearing until they landed on the fresh kill pile. "What's your favorite fresh kill?!" It was a good start.

She smiled fondly at the comment on her name, tail twitching faintly. Her head snapped to the side on the kits question, eyes warming in humor. At the question she laughed, answer already at the tip of her tongue.
"Fish, although it's quite rare these days," she mewled, nose wrinkling as she remembered just how plentiful they used to be. "Question for you, now. What do you most look forward to for when you grow up?"

Graykit wrinkled her brow as she struggled to form the new word. "Ffft, Fiiisss, Fissssh." She wondered what it tasted like. It must have been good if her new friend liked it.
"Uuhhhhhh. I dunno. What is there?" She curled up next to the queen ready for a good story.

"Fi-sh. Fish," Goldenleaf spoke the words slowly and carefully, lifting a leg from the kit to snuggle in. What was there? Did the situation favor honesty? A morbid part of her wanted to say 'starve' and 'wait', but that wasn't the future she wanted the kit to dream of. Instead, she smiled down at the kit, squirming to expose some of her stomach.
"Well, when we awaken we begin our duties. Some of us hunt for meals, others check the sick and nurse them. We have cats who patrol the borders and cats who nurse babies, like you. And we even have one who watches over the clan and ensures our safety, although that's a pretty big role. I hunt, mostly. Hunt and gather herbs for the medicine-cat."

Graykit nodded. She'd try that word again later. With a warm cozy spot offered, she dove right in, tucking her tail in. Graykit purred. Life was perfect for her. She was cozy and warm, with a friend. Right up until she got hungry again.
She listened with interest at the different jobs. They all sounded rather exciting. "Patrolling the borders sounds fun," she meowed sleepily.

Goldenleaf hummed in affirmation. It was fun, she agreed. She enjoyed stretching her legs, so patrolling the border was often a welcome distraction,
"I think it's time you return to your mother, little kit." She noted the sleepy kit fondly, leaning down to nudge their cheek.
"Come along. We can continue this discussion, and many others, when you're awake." The small life against her felt so vulnerable. She only hoped when Graykit was able to become a paw that they'd be in a better situation. This poor kit deserved so much more than the world she seemed to be about to grow up into.
