She wasn't sure what was the worst part of the new identity: the fact that she was better off going collecting at night, or the fact that she basically was expected to do it alone. Her wraith certainly wasn't any company, being as personable as a cardboard box, and in truth Loreley found its presence eerie. Like a visible ghost she had to tend to. It might as well be, really--who knew what or who the wraith had been before...well...

She tried not to think about it.

Lifting her veil, she squinted at the drunk man she had been tailing for the better part of a half hour now. He seemed to want to be stumbling towards the theater district, but if she could intervene, maybe the drain would go smoothly. He wouldn't notice anyway, right? It's what Loreley told herself as she pulled away from the alley shadows, drawing closer and closer until she was able to trip him. The man grunted vaguely as he collapsed, and in a sudden fright of being seen, she began to try and drag him by his arm back into the alleyway. The wraith was already darting into his body, slowly bloating with energy as he groaned.

There were any number of excuses Larimar could have given, for why they kept to rooftops and balconies and roamed the theaters, but they didn't have to explain themself - not to anyone. (Except Generals, perhaps. But there was rarely too much overlap in timing there, and so they went about their business without interference, endlessly glad that like this they could shed the niceties that plagued their civilian mien.) There were bonus that being a Captain came with, and it harkened back to their recruitment, what they did with it -- except that these were professional, moreso than that one had been, and it was far easier to find empty seats. They blended in as pseudo-formal plenty fine.

The girl they were watching, though -- she didn't. She was kin-but-not-kind, in an even more distant way than corrupt senshi like Xenia were, and they didn't like the way it sat under their skin. How nervous she seemed; that, too, was irritating. So -- the decision was easy.

If she sensed them, she didn't show it; it was easy for Larimar to light down behind Loreley, one hand on their hips, the other tapping the tip of the dagger against their thigh. "What've we got here? As far as I'm concerned," they shrugged, "if you want to get out of this alleyway without injury, beg for it. Go."

The moment she heard a voice, Loreley froze. It was a dangerous reaction that she was sure would get her hurt or killed one day. Perhaps even today. Slowly, as if with a rabid animal, she turned to face the captain, breaking into a sweat at the obvious hostility. And as ever, her wraith did nothing but float back and behind her in self-preservation, only thinking of the mirror it needed to return to.

The man groaned again on the ground between them, which broke her silence like a wind upon a still lake.

"He was already drunk," Loreley said, soft, meek. They couldn't possibly care who she was, but maybe, maybe if she obliged the request-command, she had a chance to escape. "I-I didn't take that much."

Or maybe she had? The wraith looked full enough, and she didn't know enough to gauge how much that meant.

"Please let me go. I won't go here again if that's what you want."

Larimar snorted; it was clear they were unimpressed with her, in everything from their face to the tense lines of their body. "You call that begging? You can do better than that." Moving past her to the man was a risk, technically, but from the quick few seconds of interaction they'd had they didn't feel they were in any danger -- or that she'd run.

"Did I say that's what I want? Don't make assumptions." They splayed one hand over the man's chest, drawing energy - more and more, too much too fast, it would kill him - without a care. And then they pulled his starseed, other hand still on the hilt of their dagger. "So tell me, then. What do you think I want?" Their gaze promised something dangerous if her answer was wrong -- and almost every answer would be wrong.

She did think about it, running. But it was safer to assume this one was stronger than her. Most were. And she thought about crying too, felt the sting of tears beginning. It wasn't logical, but not a lot about Loreley was.

And there was something similar in their energy. Chaos. Maybe more beyond that. An already fractured person brought into the Negaverse? (At least, they certainly couldn't be Dark Mirror with that dagger.) Or she was just unlucky, as ever, and landed with someone who was sadistic by nature. She tried to blink back the tears as the man's starseed was taken without a care.

"A fight," she answered, small and library soft. Whether she was wrong or not, Loreley took a step back.

There was a half-second of automatic sympathy, when they heard how soft her voice was, how close it was to shaking -- if they had been out of uniform, they would have never dared to be so cruel. But things came without repercussions like this, and if they could be cruel - well, of course they'd be.
It was like the law of gravity, to Larimar; people will be cruel if given the chance, if they know they'll not suffer for it, and so they were cruel whenever they wouldn't suffer for it. Nobody could trace this back to Jordan - half-affable, solitary Jordan, never needlessly cruel - because need didn't play any part in this. Only want.

"Close," they said affably, pocketing the starseed and standing up, "but, really, not close enough." There was no right answer - they wanted to see her scared, wanted to feel that rush, but hell if there was any way to convey that without sounding like it was some sort of kink. "Too bad, so sad. I'm feeling generous, though - so how about another try? If you want to leave without getting stabbed at least a little - " as if 'a little' was a completely reasonable amount of stabbing - "hit me. Come on."

Stormy was non-combative. Loreley...Loreley was just Stormy in a different outfit: just as short, just as scared, just as much a newborn exploring the world with different senses and fumbling into God only knew what. A young rabbit blinking her eyes and leaving the safety of the warren without someone around. (But there was no excuse, she wasn't a child, she couldn't continue being so naive--)

Run.

No. First she grabbed a grimy trashcan, barely half full with she did not know what, and threw it at them. Then she began to run, the wraith hot on her heels. She wasn't super familiar with the area, but maybe if she did enough turns, she could lose them. But just in case, she panted the ritual words and pantomimed drawing a bow as she ran, knowing that if nothing else she could hold the arrow of energy for a handful of seconds before firing.

Larimar considered themself eminently practical, despite any occasional evidence to the contrary -- but the more Loreley just stood near them, the more her meekness frustrated them; it was the same thing that drove them to bully Lapis Lazuli, to be awful to the younger lieutenants - the almost-scent of blood. Weakness was something that should be hidden, and a newborn deer shouldn't survive on its own - not like this. It was no mercy to hurt her, they weren't that deluded, not yet -- but it was satisfying, to make the weak bleed without ever dying. Death was for plebians.

"That is it," they hissed through gritted teeth, having half-stepped away from the trashcan but not enough to avoid the garbage and what would be a sizable bruise come morning, and darted towards Loreley dagger-in-hand -- a slice underhand across her right shoulder, firsthand, to set the pace.

Upon piercing skin, the area around the wound begins to feel cold - like it's been encased in ice - and becomes red and swollen. The effect lasts for ten seconds.

i'd say 'loreley should meet juliet so they can be the dmcs local baby deer' but it would be a lot of silence and vague muttering and little else

The pain made her flinch and lose her focus. She wasn't tested, barely tempered in even arguments before this new and confusing layer of life had taken her in. The sudden freezing sensation made her panic on top of that, afraid that there was either literal ice forming in and around the wound, or else she had been poisoned. Loreley's arrow was loosed before she could turn to aim and disappeared into the ground harmlessly.

Get out. The wraith certainly wasn't waiting for her and continued to float ahead. But this one had a strong aura, and she feared she couldn't simply outrun him. Skidding before she could stumble, Loreley turned to face her pursuer and tried once more. "Keening Arrow," she hissed, drawing the bow back and releasing. Would it even affect them? Sometimes the "arrow" did nothing more than make a person blink and shrug it off. What lucky people, to not be burdened by something of a tragedy.

Quote:
If an opponent is struck, the affect area grows colder and numb, and a particular event begins to play in their head: this memory comes from something tragic or that caused them grief, meant to distract them from the immediate fight. The more recent or emotionally damaging, the more likely the attack will maintain its effect, differences in power notwithstanding. Anyone at a higher stage can easily shake off the strike, if not outright avoid it.

"Why you little-"

Something in Larimar reflected, distantly, on the fact they'd sounded just then like an anime villain. That wasn't a great sound for them, but they could kind of get into it. It was probably Ashanite's bad theatrical habits rubbing off on them. ...again.

Coldness for coldness -- it hit them in the shoulder, and they blinked, confused. And then distant. Whatever they were seeing, they didn't like it at all -- it staggered them, kept them slow, one hand pressing to their forehead like they had a headache. "What. Did you do."
