Flyers were everywhere, radio stations were paid to advertise the event that was quickly approaching and even schools were plastered with information about AI: The Convention.
Any student that was touring the campus of DCU would be met by a flyer on whatever bulletin boards could be found in that building, or outside on the way to a school building.
The clever students who'd signed up and worked as tutors for the school had been entered into a lottery for one of the convention's tickets because the company had come by and donated a handful of them.
One Sophia Thomas would find herself receiving a phone call from a local but unknown number.

Flyers did very little to entice Sophia Thomas's interest, not when she had so many other things she should be doing to get ready for the school year.
Tax-free weekend was coming up and she was already making her list of what supplies she'd need for each and every one of the six classes she was taking. The "free" ride scholarship she was on was anything but free when it came to making sure she kept her grades up - and what better way to make sure they were up than to come in well prepared for anything and everything?
She was in the middle of deciding between the pens with the rubber finger grips versus the ones without (for it was almost an entire dollar and a half difference in cost - was the comfort really worth it?) when the phone in her purse began to chime. It took a few moments of rummaging (and setting down her Very Important List) before she fished it out, quickly punching the Accept without looking, as she knew she was running out of time before the call sent to voicemail.
Another potential student to tutor, maybe?
Lord knew she'd need the extra income, for sure!

The person on the other side of the line thought for sure, with the amount of rings, that the person they were trying to reach was pointedly ignoring their calls. It would have been terribly in line with the annoying millennial generation's tendency to send all calls from unknown numbers but to the caller's surprise, it was answered!
"Sophia Thomas?" A low, almost sultry feminine voice drawled from the other side of the phone call. "My name is Cassadega Bright and I work for Argent Industries," she introduced herself, almost sounding bored while she examined her nails.
"Do you have a moment?"

She waited, dutifully, for the voice on the other end to speak and when it asked for her name, she gave an automatic (and very cheerful, very practiced), "Yes? This is she."
When the voice on the other end identified herself, Sophie's brows furrowed in confusion.
Argent Industries?
The name rang a bell - maybe it was on the news, maybe she'd seen something with their logo - but she couldn't place precisely where she'd seen those words before. And why were they calling her? She hadn't set up for any internships, she wasn't expecting any call from any Argent place...
Ugh. Was it some sort of survey or sales call?
"Depends," She said, the cheerfulness fading as she chewed on her bottom lip. She hated dealing with telemarketers, "What can I do for you?"

The girl on the phone sounded so cheery Cass thought she was going to gag because of it.
Having found a chipped spot of her nail polish, the green haired woman shifted so that the receiver was cradled between her shoulder and cheek while she picked at it.
"It's more like what we can do for you," she stated, having to cover the speaker with her hand when she yawned, twirling in her seat until the back rested against her desk when she leaned back.
"We partnered with DCU to reward it's high performing students, especially those that help others," there was a pause, a hum sang into the receiver. "You happen to be the lucky one who won a pair of tickets to our upcoming Convention."

She listened intently to what the woman on the other end of the phone was saying.
Tickets? For her?
Wait... she'd won something?
Sophie had never won anything in her life. At least, nothing that was luck based - she'd won the elementary school spelling bee, she'd won one year at the Science Fair but... but a lottery win? For tickets?
Her?
"O-Oh," she mumbled, unsure of what to say. "But I.. I didn't enter any contest. Are you... are you sure you have the right person?"

Cass wondered where the nauseating cheeriness had gone when the response she got was lackluster. It wasn't excited disbelief, it was a mumbling and nearly incoherent whisper of you've got the wrong person.
The whole interaction reminded Cass why she liked stripping instead of working in an office. Still it was good money, with good benefits, and great eye-candy. She would deal.
"This is Sophia Thomas, right?" Cass said, barely keeping the annoyance out of her tone. "The school was given a handful of tickets to disperse at their discretion and they chose to give it to some tutors. This was the number provided, so they're yours."
She spun in her chair again and started tapping a pen against the edge of the desk. Sophie would be able to hear it on the other side.
"They'll be available at the front desk of AI under your name."

Ah.
So the tutors got it. That made a lot more sense than her being randomly selected or individually chosen out of a lineup. Just a thanks for making life easier on the teachers token of appreciation that who knows how many others got.
Why would she think there was a chance that she would be special?
The tapping on the other end had her stomach turning as the nervousness fought to take over. Annoyance laced the woman's voice and Sophie hurried to end the call, already feeling like she'd botched things up. It was a simple thing, how hard was it to say thank you and move on?
"T-Thank you, I'll be by later for them. Sorry for the misunderstanding."
She hung up before the stranger could have time to reply, Sophie staring down at the discarded school supply list as she swallowed hard.
Maybe one of her students would want to go. What was a person like her supposed to do at something as huge as a convention?

There was a longer pause on the other end of the all and Cass was wondering what the hell was making this girl be in such disbelief. It was something free, didn't people love free and local things?
"Have--" Cass attempted to say, because it was part of her boring job to, before the girl hastily hung up on her.
Rude.
She returned the phone to the receiver and went back to picking at her nails.
