Stillwaterite's form blinked into existence a block down from one Ms. Payne's house in the quiet suburban neighborhood outside the city proper. The sun had set a while ago, but it wasn't outrageously late. Not like that one time she had come here with Dallas when the cowboy had been stabbed from that job that went south. The corrupt's heels clicked along the cement as moved to cover herself between two houses, and when the woman came out the other side, she had powered down.

Knot really wanted some more of those homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Like seriously.

She couldn't remember the last time she had homemade cookies. She regretted not grabbing two of those containers on the way out. The craving she had for more was absolutely insane that she kept thinking about them. That's why she was here, because it wouldn't hurt to ask the woman, right? Not to mention she was utterly entertaining and...well. She had a really nice vibe about her that Knot was drawn to.

The woman made a sharp turn to head down the path to Jules' front door, and she hopped up the steps onto the front porch. Reaching the door, Knot rang the bell, and then waited. She had seem some lights on on her walk up, so that was good.

For once, Jules wasn't doing much of anything when the doorbell rang.

All the cleaning had been tended to, cooking dinner had been replaced with making a simple sandwich and the books had been stowed away for the night as the sun departed from the sky. Her little reading nook relied strongly on the sunlight peeking through the window adjacent to the window seat, so with the darkness came the nurse's tendency to migrate towards the couch in search of something to watch on television.

Nothing had been on worth watching. Hallmark and Lifetime had moved on to dull reruns, making Jules settle for a mini-marathon of Investigation Discovery and all the whodunit crime episodes (though everyone always knew the spouse or scorned lover was to be blamed in the end).

It was almost time to call it a night and make her way back to the bedroom to exchange her day clothes for a pajama set when the doorbell caught her attention. Head twisting towards the door with a puzzled expression, she hesitated before rising. Bare feet padded along the wooden floorboards before the door slowly creaked open and...

"Knot?"

There was no Mustang this time, lurking in the shadows of the driveway behind her little Bug. No Dallas, wounded or not. Just cute, happy Knot standing in the doorway of her house at what-the-heck o'clock in the evening.

"Is everything alright?" One hand extended itself to the side in a welcoming fashion as she sidled next to the door to give the other woman space. "Would you like to come in?"

"Yup!" Knot greeted, grinning at the woman as she answered the door. "Oh, everything's peachy." She replied, and since Jules had extended the invitation to let her her, she did just that. The taller woman moved past her into the house, but she didn't go far. Knot lingered in the entry way, waiting for Jules.

Knot glanced down the hall, taking in the house. Since there was no pressing need to get Dallas tended to this time around, her eyes were free to wander and satisfy her curiosity of the Payne abode. Beyond the kitchen, of course. It was really cute. Homey. Clean...it was a stark contrast to the dorms she called home in Negaspace. It made her idly wonder if she ever lived in something like this...

Well.

Maybe she could, now?

With the money she was starting to rake in from the jobs she did with Dallas...

It was an interesting thought.

"I'd apologize for dropping in on you, except I wouldn't really mean it." She smiled at the woman. "I'm here because I was wondering if you had anymore of those chocolate chip cookies from the other night. They were nothing short of amazing and I can't stop thinking about them."

She waited for a moment, completely expecting to hear a "sike" or "J-K" or whatever the kids were saying these days (was bazinga still a thing?) when they were pulling on someone's leg.

She waited.

She waited another moment.

The moment never came.

It took but only a second for her to catch herself, mind slightly stumped that the young woman literally only visited her for chocolate chip cookies but her cheerful demeanor and warm hands were already whisking the girl towards the kitchen.

"I don't have but a box left - the others got delivered - but you're more than welcome to help yourself to the last ones."

The Tupperware in question was fished from the top of the fridge, requiring a small hop from the five foot, five inch homeowner to retrieve. Sliding the box on the island, she immediately turned to open the fridge door.

"Milk work? I also have wine... orange juice.... I don't carry much soda, I'm afraid...."

The sudden switch had her amused. Knot found herself whisked to the kitchen, and she gravitated towards the island, especially once the last container of chocolate chip goodness was set on it. The woman just made herself at home, and pulled out a stool to settle onto it. She reached for the container and opened it, where she then wasted no time in taking a bite out of one.

So.

Good.

It wasn't even warm like last time but it was still delicious. Chocolate chip was now her favorite. Period. Knot's eyes crinkled in further enjoyment as Jules went into the fridge to get her a drink. Woah. "Oh, milk is great, thank you. I was just happy for the cookies, you're just spoiling me now." There was some silence from Knot as she devoured the cookie, and reached to grab another.

"Could you make some more?" She asked the woman. "I'll pay for whatever you need. I'll pay you even." She grinned. "For a lot of cookies."

The girl hadn't even given Jules time to plate the cookies, much less warm them up in the microwave before she was already digging into the container and making herself at home. By the time she'd managed to pour a glass out for her, Knot had already devoured two and was working towards a third.

Sliding the glass towards the hungry child, she shook her head and laughed.

"Straight to the point, I see. Do you get that from your "boss" or is that just another trait you two share in common?"

The way the girl was eating had Jules almost alarmed. Was Knot really out and about just for cookies or was there a more pressing issue at hand? And why was she eating so fast - did Dallas not even feed the poor thing when he was taking her all over town?

"I've got some leftover dough in the freezer that I'd be happy to thaw out and bake you more from. Can I..." She hesitated. Did she dare bring up her curiosity? "... maybe make you a sandwich or something with more substance? You seem famished."

It was hard not to talk with her mouthful, when she wanted to both eat and talk at the same time. Knot had class though, and did not speak with her mouthful. It meant there were some pauses between her answers.

"Oh, that's a trait we share in common." She replied cheerfully, and her expression lit up at the mention of dough in the freezer. "Yes please." A pause, as this time Knot took the milk Jules had prepared for her. "Thank you." She said, raising the glass to the nurse in a bit of a salute before taking a drink. The woman paused as the offer of a sandwich was brought up.

"No, that's alright, I'm already being a pain by---" She cut off as, at that moment, her stomach grumbled loudly, and Knot had to actually think when the last time she ate was. It happened sometimes...she'd forget when running around with Dallas or staying on top of her quota. Minutes turned to hours and then suddenly it was breakfast time and the last time she ate was around lunch the previous day. "Well. Then." Knot finally continued. "...Yes, please, as long as it's not too much trouble. A sandwich would be great. If there's anything I can do to help, please say so."

She went back to eating another cookie, and once she devoured that she spoke up again.

"Are you and Dallas seeing each other?" She asked. It was a thought she was curious about ever since first meeting the nurse when the cowboy had been stabbed. "The way you guys bicker has that sense of familiarity. On top of the fact that wasn't the first time you patched him up. You looked prepared for it again, too." She grinned. "Not to mention the way he had his hands all over you."

"Oh, I don't mind at all!!!"

From the moment the yes was uttered, Jules was off for the pantry. She hadn't been grocery shopping in a few days (thanks in part to her Negaverse duties, thanks in part to unexpected visitors consuming her time) so her thoughts of trying to make a relatively balanced sandwich for a starving girl was sadly put on hold, as she'd just polished off the rest of the lettuce and turkey for her own dinner sandwich.

The peanut butter was retrieved from the pantry and the jelly from the fridge - two staples a household should never go without. Hopefully there was no peanut allergies involved, else Knot was in for a very sad sandwich.

As she opened the utensil drawer to bring out a knife, Knot's question caught her completely off guard. The knife clattered back down into the drawer, clumsy hands quickly moving to fish it back out as Jules worked to keep her face from showing any signs of bashfulness.

"I --- he's a rascal that likes to show up whenever he feels like it. I work at the hospital so I tend to... end up bringing home a few things or two. He found himself lucky when it came to stumbling on the right house, that's all."

Her back hastily turned away from the island, the woman unscrewing the caps to the peanut butter and jelly jars to start the process of sandwich making. The bread bag was snatched from the side as Jules fought the growing warmth in her face as she asked, a slight hope to her voice, "Why, did he say something to you about us?"

Knot sipped milk and ate cookies (sorry, read as demolished cookies) as she watched Jules buzz around the kitchen in preparation of the sandwich. Also when she answered her question, too. Knot's gaze sharpened on the woman, and the corners of her lips pulled up around the glass of milk. The knife clattering, the twist of her face, the pause. The even better sign was when Jules turned her back to her.

It was adorable.

Someone was clearing crushing on the cowboy, and when she heard the catch in the woman's question, Knot couldn't help but feel a little bad. Oops. She had been wanting to satisfy her curiosity, but apparently she had stepped into something of a subject. Still, she'd be nothing but upfront. "No." She answered, "But he doesn't talk to me about anything beyond business or what's relevant to it." She informed the woman, and hoped it softened the blow of the answer.

"That night he got stabbed though, I asked him if he wanted to go to the hospital, and your name was the first thing rolling off his tongue." She wondered if that meant anything. It was clear Dallas was fond of Jules...but was he fond of her the way Jules seemed to be fond of him? Now she was really curious. "Plus there's that smirk or grin whenever he brings you up. Got a thing for bad boys, Ms. Payne?" Knot asked teasingly.

She wasn't going to let her disappointment show in her expression as Knot's very definitive no left her mouth, but the peanut butter found itself spreading rather forcefully across the bread, as if the knife was being squeezed just a little too tightly.

Too many romance novels and too many chick flicks left one's heart a little vulnerable, it seemed.

"That's alright. He seems to enjoy spreading his charm around wherever he goes." The jelly was applied on the other slice of bread before the two came together. She listened quietly to what the tall girl said, the sad little smile that was hiding away slowly curving up - just a tad.

By the time she'd sliced the sandwich into halves, the smile had returned to her face, though whether it was genuine or not was still a mystery.

"Haven't you heard? Only the good die young, Miss Knot." The plate was slid in front of the girl before Jules rested her elbows on the opposite side of the island, leaning her weight into the furniture. "You may be too young for that song, come to think of it."

One finger wagged itself in the air. "Though you should stay away from them, they're nothing but trouble - do you understand?"

Knot watched the woman's back, but now with her turned away and the actions she was performing isolated right in front of her, it was hard to get a read. Maybe the silence said it, though. Disappointment.

She mused. This was something she was going to have to keep an eye on to see where it went. If it went anywhere. There was a part of her that hoped it would. Dallas, though he hit on anything that had tits and moved (she had seen it in action and knew it to be true), really did seem fond of the woman. In Knot's opinion, she thought they made a cute...Hm. Well maybe cute wasn't the right word. She thought they made a powerful couple.

Yes.

Knot laughed a bit. "So what are you saying? All the good men are dead and only the bad ones are left? Thank you. So much." She took the plate and brought it a bit closer to herself, and laughed again. "It's a little too late to say away from bad boys, considering I went looking for Dallas to teach me." She lifted one of the sandwich halves.

"If it makes you feel any better though, Ms. Jules, I'm seeing a cop." She grinned widely. "So I think it balances out." She then took a bite of the sandwich, and let out a satisfactory hum.

It was the best PB and J she ever had, too.

"How in the world you managed to get into cahoots with that devil, I'll never know," she murmured back playfully, her smile going wry at the thought of Knot stumbling across a buzzed Jimmy Dallas, who was no doubt in over his head at whatever poker game he'd found.

She watched the girl eat with delight, warm fuzzy feelings coming over her at the sight of someone else eating her cooking (albeit, it was just a sandwich, but still). Encouraged by the maternal feeling, she embraced the call and turned around to pull the cookie dough out of the freezer, setting it aside on the countertop for later use. It would take a few hours for it to thaw, but she should have a new batch of cookies for the girl come morning time, should Knot care to come around once again.

Jules grinned at her admission, soon fully engrossed with the fact that her company clearly had a more active love life to chat about than she did.

"A police officer? What a dangerous occupation."

Already her mind was spinning with thoughts of a young Knot waiting up to get a text from her boyfriend in blue, making sure he made it home after a long shift at work.

"Was that what had you out and about this late in the evening? Out visiting with your beau?"

"Because he's good at what he does and I wanted to make it rain dollar bills." Knot replied with a laugh. "He's delivered so far...plus all the danger is rather exciting." Truth be told. It was living life on the edge, even if she had a bit more of advantage being apart of the Negaverse with its perks.

She ate some more of the sandwich, and then blinked before swallowing and shaking her head a bit. "Oh, we're not actually dating." She informed the woman. "I guess the right term is..." She hummed for a moment. "Friends with benefits? Possibly? I really like him though, and I'm not interested in anyone else so..." Knot shrugged. "It is what it is right now, but I like it." The woman smiled.

"Tonight? No. I was out running about in the city, and then found myself craving cookies, so here I am! I'm a night owl." Black eyes searched for the nearest clock. "I'm not keeping you up or anything, am I?" She asked. "Not everyone runs the same crazy schedule I do, I know."

"Oh!"

Friends with benefits? Perhaps it was the new "thing" to do, with the younger generation. It was such a peculiar concept but the more she thought about it, the more it made sense. Why risk getting your heart involved when you could enjoy a friendship and the sexual perks right along with it?

Because no one wants to buy the cow if they can get the milk for free, Julianne.

Her mother's words came back to haunt her with a wince. Well, Jack had bought the figurative cow and then kicked it out of the house when the prettier, younger bovine had made an appearance on the scene.

Mothers weren't always right, after all.

At the mention of being a night owl, Julianne's somber thinking dissolved, quickly perking up into a much cheerier attitude. "I work the graveyard shift at the hospital, I'm able to stay up all night."

If figurative lightbulbs could go off over people's heads, hers would have been shining extra brightly right then.

"And it sounds as if I need to pull out the wine and get down to the bottom of this friends with benefits story while we wait for the cookie dough to thaw. What do you say, Knot? Cookies in exchange for conversation?"

Knot polished off the sandwich, and her own expression lit up upon hearing about Jules' work schedule.

The light bulb went off above her head as well.

She grinned. "How about we bust out the bourbon instead, and you have yourself a deal, ma'am."
