Dria knocked on Sister Rosemary’s door. It was 2:45 pm, time for her appointment with Sister Rosemary, one of the Guidance Counselors at St. Mags. She was being summoned for unknown reasons, and she hoped she wasn’t in trouble. Her last test was a C, and perhaps the nun was concerned that her grades were slipping again. If that was true, then she might lose bike privileges before she got them, perhaps even the chance to patrol, that would be bad. She had to calm down though, it was just one C, not the end of the world, was it?
Sister Rosemary called her in and asked her to sit. “Hello, Dria. How are you doing?” Dria answered that she was doing well, quite nervously. “Is this about the C on my last test? I will study harder. I know I can do better.” Sister Rosemary held up her hand to stop her blabbering. “I know you will, Dria. Calm down, that is not what this is about.” Dria’s jaw dropped. “It’s not? Then why…?” she trailed off. Sister Rosemary explained. “Dria, you’ve improved incredibly. You’re doing well.” Dria was not following and Sister Rosemary could see this. “Dria, you’re doing too well to be at St. Magalena’s. You don’t need to be here. A transfer is in order.”
A transfer? Dria was shock? To where? When? Why? What would this mean? Sister Rosemary noticed her confusion, as she shuffled some papers. “Dria, Dria. I know it’s confusing at first, but we’ll get it all sorted out. I’ve already talked to your parents, and they’ve agreed they want it for you, and they want you to figure out this independently- with some advice from me of course.” She smiled. Dria took a deep breath. “So; what are my options?”
“Well, there is Meadowview, for co-ed, that’s the regular high school. Then there is Crystal Academy, girls only but you may need a scholarship to go there- er well, your family is doing a lot better- they may be able to pay for you to go there. It is a private school. There is Romano’s Constitutional Haven. It is a new military school boarding school for co-ed.” Dria frowned. “Didn’t think so.” Sister Rosemary laughed. “Finally, there is Horizon Institute for Science and Technology for co-ed, grades 7-12 and some college. That’s if you want to do something sciencey. I know you used to love science, Xandria, before the accident.”
The accident. The accident hadn’t been mentioned in a year. True she had loved science before the accident but now… now what? Now there were patrols, now she had to save the world, now she looked toward the stars. And what would help her save the world? Science, that she had once loved. Did she still love it? Probably, once she got back into the swing of it. “I choose Horizon.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “Then help me fill out this paperwork. And you’ll have to decide what you want to study.”
