Cathleen tried not to think of the danger in Destiny City too much. It was easier to focus on things that seemed more important, and when she spent more and more time outside of the city, it was easy to pretend it didn't matter at all. The monsters, the fighting... she hadn't wanted a part of that, not really. She could take care of her daughter, focus on her career, get her to where she needed to be, and never think twice about the secret war that raged in the shadows.
She could ignore it. Well, most nights she could. And maybe not even on purpose. Easy enough to miss the muffled shouts, the distant fighting, the strange happenings. She tucked her daughter in and said to herself she had an eye on the situation, that she wouldn't let anyone get hurt, that she'd take care of it if she had to. And well, she never had to. This night felt different though. Almost as soon as she left the grocery store, her senses tingled and she felt on edge. Cathleen wanted to hurry home as soon as possible, try to avoid once again the sense that something was coming. Dark corners of the streets were that much more menacing, and Cat walked at a slightly faster pace.
A scream, close by this time. Cat held her groceries close to her chest and sighed. This time she couldn't ignore it, could she? If someone was in danger, and she was the only one to take care of, what was she going to do? Run home? Someone needed her.
Duat... a voice sounded in her head. That was her only choice, wasn't it? Cat put down her groceries carefully and closed her eyes. It had been years now, since she had done this. She summoned her weapon, and the small blue pendant appeared in her hands as she took on the form of Duat. A page, but stronger, and faster, and better able to deal with the fighting. Another thing, she could tell what was nearby - the energy signature of a youma. She gripped her weapon and ran towards the scream, towards the youma that was threatening an innocent person.
"Stop! Get away from them!" she shouted at the youma, a dark mass of fur and tangles, like a bear that had fallen in a pit of burs. It was clearly feral. It looked up at the page, abandoning the human it was terrorizing long enough for them to run. It rushed her suddenly, knocking her to her feet. She hadn't fought in so long, but she knew she couldn't leave this be. She pounded her fists against the beast. She wouldn't run away.
