How long had it been since Lovi got a hot minute to herself? Between summer school and Negaverse duties and trying to make time to hang out with her friend, Lovi felt like she'd been running herself ragged. And she totally was, if the dark circles under her eyes had anything to do with it. The frazzled teen was just about ready to burst, and the only outlet for that was to get way the crap away from everyone and take a minute to visit some nature.

And that's exactly what she'd set out for that Friday evening. Dressed in tight-fitting jeans and a pink sleeveless sweater top, white and pink tennis shoes and a matching frilly pink hair tie, Love started into the park with every intention of basically living there for a few hours. She followed the winding dirt pat over languid roots and past cheeky overgrowth that reached out to sweep her legs from time to time. She climbed deep into the nature park, further and further away from the road, half-carried by her feet and half-carried by her thoughts. And by the time she realized that she'd been on auto pilot for the better part of ten minutes, she already spotted the upcoming rock face in the distance.

"I needed this for, like, a million years," she confessed to nowhere and nothing. With a short sigh, she leveraged herself against one of the thick oaks that guarded the path. Its shade spread wide, dappled with sunspots, and cooled anyone that stepped into its purview. Not that Lovi thought she should need it already — she'd barely gotten out there.

But she did need a minute to get her gear together. Even with her newfound power, stuff like rock climbing was still dangerous. She couldn't just power up and expect to not break anything while she was falling thirty feet. It's not like she was totally invincible as Chrysoprase, even if she felt it. Or, at least, she told herself that (unconvincingly) while she dropped her tote bag from her shoulder. Digging around, she found her chalk and her tape and —

That sounded like a twig. Was someone else there? "Hello?" Her voice didn't carry far, but she looked about herself nonetheless.

Lorne was taking some time for himself. After a few days of work, with the situation with Nadia still fresh in his mind and knowing he'd have to get over himself soon and call - he opted to take a hike. Not anything extreme, just some time for himself lost in nature, something he didn't indulge in nearly as much as he should. There just often weren't enough hours in the day. In this case, though, he made those hours appear, desperate to clear his head and try to shake some anxiety away.

So far it wasn't really working, but it still felt good to get out. And not that Lorne had been in bad shape when he'd left, but he'd been taking self-defense classes (since without a girlfriend or much of a social life there had been a lot more time for those, hiking, and other various things), and he was in a much better way now physically if not mentally.

His thoughts were still racing, buzzing and buzzing around in his head, when he stepped on a branch and heard a voice in response. "A-ah!" What a dignified response. But Lorne was startled. He cleared his throat, already red in the face. "Y-yes, hello, sorry - "

Of course his greeting was an immediate apology. Ugh. But it might have been their cherished personal time too if they were all the way out here!

"Waaaaaiiiit a minute…" Lovi pursed her lips together with a long hum. With all the grace of a newborn faun, she stepped this way and that over underbrush and storm-stricken detritus. "I know that voice from anywhere — especially the super cute stammer." She continued her hunt, tiptoeing around the great trunks of trees that shaded her from overbearing sun. She felt like a predator for as wild as the woods got out here.

But she felt like a detective, too — like she was on the trail of some big mystery behind this disembodied voice. Maybe she was! She couldn't shake the familiarity, for sure. It had to have been someone she knew and spent a lot of time around, because she wasn't the best at recognizing voices. There had only been a handful of people with voices that really stood out to her over the years, and she felt pretty certain she knew this one.

Pretty certain turned into really certain the more she crept around the woods.

Finally she rounded close enough to the twig-snapping presence. She leapt out from behind a tree, nearly slipping on a thick branch upon landing, but she hoped her exuberance carried all the same. "Mr. Benoit!" She exclaimed all at once, even before she got a good look at the man before her. And when she did get a look, her eyes widened in excitement and she couldn't stop a wide grim from claiming her face. "Wow, it really is you! What're you doing in Destiny City?" And would it be totally wrong to hug him now?

If Lorne hadn't been so frazzled to hear a voice coming from what might as well have been the middle of nowhere, he might've put two and two together more quickly - well, no, maybe that was giving him too much credit. He'd been in an entirely different city when they'd met; but then, he had a really odd penchant for meeting really unexpected people in this city, didn't he?

At least this time it wasn't an ex coming back to haunt him - not that he'd call running into Nadia a haunting thing, because even if it was a shock, it wasn't like he was miserable to see her, unlike the epitome of bad exes in Archer. But wasn't it a bit strange, really? First Archer in France and then here, and then Nadia in Russia and then here again -

What a strange city this was, full of coincidences and happenstance; that would be the first thought in Lorne's head when the girl emerged and he immediately sputtered, "O-oh, Lovi! Hello! - I co-could ask you the very same!" Only despite being punctuated by an exclamation point, his voice was really only loud by Lorne Benoit's standards. Still, though, "H-how good to see you, I - w-wow, I never expected - " and he gave a short, light laugh, because there were many less pleasant surprises to be had.

"I'm going to hug you!" Those words were the only painfully short preface Lorne received before Lovina launched herself at her former… Coworker? She wasn't sure how to classify TAing for someone, but she did know how to wrap her arms around his spindly frame and squeeze him like she wanted him to pop. She didn't really, but she always found it fun to get a reaction out of Mr. Benoit. Maybe because it was so easy? All anyone had to do was say the wrong thing — maybe learn a bad word from a parent, or repeat something they saw on Youtube — and he lit up like the night sky on Independence Day. Lovi thought it was pretty cute.

Wow, what a super strange coincidence!" Pulling back, Lovi gave him a firm shake. Then, finally, she left him be for the moment. "My parents move around a bunch s I never really get to settle anywhere. Usually I never find the same person twice. But now you're here!" For whatever reason.

I hope someone gave him a super amazing job at Knightside. That'd be totally lit! And she'd definitely look into, like, a summer school TAing job if she could work with Mr. Benoit again. He was always majorly gentle, even as a student teacher. And a lot of the student teachers she met were the arrogant types who thought they had some revolutionary new teaching method that would permanently alter the teaching landscape or whatever the spiel was.

But they didn't have time for that. Leaning over, Lovi dusted off her knees, her hips, and her back. "So what's got you all the way out here in the forest? Nature trail stuff?" She looked slightly past him as she half-expected a girlfriend or a wife or somebody with him. He never really seemed the type that went anywhere without a handler. "Cuz I'm here to climb some rocks. Wanna come with me? We can catch up!"

Well... at least she warned him. Lorne still gave a little 'meep' of surprise, his face lighting up more intensely than a Christmas tree, another sound squeak slipping out at the sheer intensity of the hug. Still, the initial awkward stiffness aside, he did reach around and pat her back lightly, flashing her a tentative smile as Lovi pulled back (although not without another one of those funny little sounds from the shaking). From Lorne, bar his little makeshift Saturn family, that was pretty impressive.

"Ohh, that's right - you did mention that you'd moved around a lot, " Lorne said reflectively, although that didn't really answer the question, "Though why here? N-not that I'm unhappy to see you, " and he was, he really was. It probably sounded a bit silly, but in reconnecting with everyone, to see someone he'd met while he'd been away was a welcome surprise. "Q-quite the opposite, b-but - what are the odds?" What an odd city this was.

Then, he turned a bit more red. "I'm fond of nature trails. A-a good way to clear my mind, you know? It's very peaceful out here."

Normally, honestly, the prospect of rock climbing would have immediately put him off. But these rocks didn't really... seem too intimidating to glance at them (not like his mountain in space), and he did want to continue to talk to Lovi if he could, and she was inviting him, and - "I've never done that before, " he admitted a bit quietly, just so she was aware by inviting him that he didn't know the first thing about it.

If she had any hopes that Mr. Benoit got a little less awkward in his time spent teaching, those hopes were dashed now. He still got super high-pitched and wound up, like one of those party favor things the girls liked to blow in each other's faces. Maybe he liked being a stick in the mud?

"Oh, ummm… There wasn't really a great reason. Just, my dad found a better construction contract out here, so we came to DC instead of like, Houston." Which, Houston sounded like a way better climate, but did the Negaverse have branches out in Houston? She was pretty sure Romano's wasn't one of those weird chain military schools. Did they even do recruiting outside of Destiny City? She'd have to ask Ms. Rey next time she saw her. "And anyway, DC's got super cheap rent. Like wow, dirt cheap. But… That's basically all. Sad, huh? No relatives, no special learning opportunities, no nothing. Just construction.." She sighed, her shoulders dropping like stones.

Still, she didn't stay depressed about it for long. Most of her disappointment fled her face by the time she looked at him again. And what brought him out to this nature trail on this day at this moment? Like, seriously, divine providence? The stars aligned? She wanted to know.

"Anyway, rock climbing's super easy. You just want to dust your hands off with this chalky stuff — I know it's kinda gross, but it really helps. But it really helps with keeping a good grip? And um, yeah. You always wanna test what you're grabbing before you grab it? But this cliff thing's been climbed like a million times. It's super stable. Oh, and, here." Lovi fished around in her bag for a moment before she produced a plastic sack full of white. She took out a small handful for herself, dusted her palms in it, and handed off the rest to Lorne.

"So, what about you? What brought you to DC? Was it the nature trails?" She teased, smiling.

Honestly, if she'd asked, he probably would have laughed sheepishly and admitted he wished he had that amount of say in how he responded to people. The fact that his anxiety got the better of him in these new situations so often was something that quietly frustrated the ever living hell out of him. Lorne tried little tricks to get around it, but it felt like he was just wired to be shy and jittery.

All of that made a lot of sense, to be honest. "Ah, t-that's true though... I hadn't even considered that, " and of course there would be plenty to do for someone into construction here. The amount of property damage this city assumed was almost baffling. "I-it's a bit rough out here in Destiny City, so that would be why the rent is so... have you been here long?" It suddenly occurred to him to add, a little hurriedly, "Please be careful if you go out at night, i-it's really... " Lorne didn't want to make the city sound dangerous, but there was no denying it kind of really was.

Then, something that might have almost been a playful grin took hold even as his cheeks still burned. "If I'm put off by chalk, that would make my career choice rather unfortunate." Lorne didn't know if that was actually funny, but he thought it was.

Some chalk and sizable rocks that didn't look too dangerous. Okay. Maybe he could actually give this a shot, he thought as he claimed the powder and dusted his hands with it like he'd seen her do.

His cheeks burned a little more intensely again, but he smiled. "I - I lived in Destiny City before my teacher training, " and for all his trepidation about the city, he still spoke of it fondly. "I knew there was a demand for educators here, and I also knew I wanted to come back, so... here I am. The nature trails are a h-happy bonus, really."

Lorne's smile broadened a bit. "A-and you're here now too, so there's another bonus, I suppose."

His concern was cute, but Lovi waved it off. She was the danger when going out at night! But she couldn't tell Mr. Benoit that — that'd be against Ms. Rey's wishes, and Izzy's now, too! So Mr. Benoit would have to sit in the dark for a while unless they got really close and he turned out to be an amazingly good addition to the Negaverse or something. Which she didn't really see happening for how nervous he was, but she didn't exactly know what they looked for in their recruits either…

Lovi blinked at his joke, stalled for a couple seconds, then offered a chuckle. "Oh, I get it! Cuz they used to use chalk in schools, right? I totally forgot about that!" How many years had it been since she even looked at a chalkboard? Didn't matter, rock climbing imminent.

"Oh my god, really?" Lovi paused in broaching the rock wall for just a second. "Usually I just hear people talking about how they wanna leave. Not that you moving back is a bad thing! It's actually super refreshing to hear that someone else really likes it here. Cuz I like it here, too — the city has a ton of charm!" Lovi gripped her first pair of outcroppings and settled her foot on another. "I know it supposedly gets weird at night — like, super dangerous — but my school doesn't let me wander around after dark, really. It's called Romano's. You should totally teach there." Then maybe he could get introduced to Ms. Rey, and they could have a good time, and then Lovi would know two teachers on the Negaverse roster!

But first, the wall. She hoisted herself up to her first outcropping, then went feeling around with her leading hand to find another. It wasn't a high climb, she knew — it wouldn't take long to finish — but she wanted to leave Lorne as much space as possible so he could learn.

Oh my god, am I teaching a teacher? That's so meta!

Lorne couldn't help but laugh, and it was a little loud for him, but not a bad thing - it was a sign of familiarity if nothing else. "The world changes too fast, " he got it, thankfully without a stutter, "if someone my age is already dating themselves. My goodness."

Not that he was really great with technology anyway. He'd gotten a bit better, though. He had to if he was going to be an effective teacher, after all. (But fortunately he worked with children mostly, the crayons hadn't yet gone out of style.)

"Yes, of course - i-it certainly has its charm, and I've got too many good memories of friends here to leave it behind." Even if there were plenty of bad memories, too, and he didn't know where he stood with some of those friends now. Didn't change his fondness for the city, though.

It was good to hear, at least, that her school was keeping her secure. "Ah - I would, " and he turned a bit red again, "but I'll be in elementary, still. It's what I'm trained for, s-so I'm very excited." Lorne smiled, though, as he added, "Of course, you're free to visit. I shouldn't be hard to find."

He didn't really know why he was so jittery about it besides the fact that it was something new. Lorne had height on his side, and he was stronger than he'd been before he'd left Destiny City. He'd been so determined to be more useful when he returned that - well, there was no real reason not to try. So even if his fingers fumbled a bit and he was undeniably nervous, he still went ahead and tried.

Lovi puffed out a breath as she hoisted herself up by another outcropping. "I love kids! I'd totally come visit!" And as she stared up at the cliff, she wondered how she'd make that work alongside all her other obligations. She had Romano's, she had the Negaverse — maybe she could get Ms. Rey to approve it as some kind of energy-draining field trip? Then Lovi could just return and say she couldn't find an opening so she didn't get any energy, or she could drain somewhere else afterward… Maybe it was better to ask her Romano's advisor if she could shadow Mr. Benoit at — where was he going again? Knightside?

Focus, Lovi! Don't fall and make yourself look bad in front of your old boss! She reached for a further hold, shifting her body as she made the reach. Then she swung her leg out and caught another foothold cut into the small cliffside The path forward was easy from there — straight up, like someone chiseled out a few extra holds for beginners or something.

"You okay?" She called down at him. Huffing, she looked over her shoulder to make sure he wasn't face down in the dirt. "It's tough but you feel totally amazing after!"

Her muscles already burned. Her arms started shaking when she had to rely particularly hard on her upper body strength, but she didn't have much more to go for a short climb. Finally she caught both hands on the lip of the precipice and gave herself a jumpstart, and that was enough to — while grunting and pushing as hard as she can — get herself over the last dirty outcropping. She army crawled just far enough to be out of the way and then sprawled herself on the ground with a loud, exclamatory 'whew!'.

Admittedly, Lorne got very quiet for awhile - he was focusing very intently on what he was doing, taking it slowly and carefully, loathe to think what would happen if his grip were to slacken enough to send him tumbling to the ground. It wasn't easy; he was a lot more fit than he had been in the past, but this was a different sort of exertion, and some part of him mused that his hands were a little soft for this. But generally speaking, focus and a healthy fear of crashing down to his death were enough to keep him clinging to the rocks. He was slow, of course, very slow, but he was making steady progress. "I'm okay, " he said finally, maybe a little later than he should have, but at least he got the words out.

Of course, vaulting himself over the top was... a little more awkward, with him grunting and pushing and kind of creeping more than actually getting anywhere fast.

She watched Lorne with some concern as he dragged himself up the cliffside. And she almost stepped in to give him a hand when he said he was okay, which she took for not needing any help, and she backed up a bit to give him space instead.

Finally he pulled himself up and triumphed over his first climb. Lovi clapped emphatically for him. "You made it! Now you can look at the view, it's like the reward after." She gestured toward where they now had a view of the treetops, of how the sun spilled in and trickled over the individual leaves. More distantly they saw the city's residential streets no great advantage to the height of their buildings, but being able to see past the trees was pretty cool in Lovina's eyes. It was like being Chrysoprase but as her civilian self. How cool was that? She could sorta keep up with an agent!

"Wow, that totally cleared my mind. Climbing is, like, amazing for that. Don't you think?" Whether Lorne stopped panicking about his life or not was a little beyond her, but she hoped he got some relief. He always struck her as a nervous sort with the way he sometimes stuttered or stared at the ground — like he never really knew what to do with people. She didn't know what the big deal was about that, but she also didn't get how Lorne could be so mind-bendingly nice to people sometimes either.
