She screwed up. Heck, it wasn't even the kind of screw up you could just write off this was a BIG screw up. She hadn't meant for it to happen it just sort of.. did? How was she supposed to remember about father's day when her real dad was dead, her cat dad was busy trying to get that cash money, and her new dad-not-quite-dad was sort of... on the fence if he was sort of her dad now. Legally he was her guardian. One of them. And he needed a gift. a father's day gift. Problem was, what did you get a guy who insisted he didn't 'need' anything? She also had the whole 'don't steal money' issue so she'd gone and done like... legitimate work to earn some cash for once. Sure, it was mowing a few lawns and painting a few fencing in the middle of suburbia but lost of rich white folks ate that s**t up. Kavinsky would be proud of her. Still, she waffled on a gift too long and now.... she hoped she made the right choice. She was nervous about it if just because for all she did know about Kavinsky, there was still a lot she didn't know. Was it too much? He wasn't a very emotionally open guy. Look how long it took for him and Banks to actually take it to the bank! God, she was at least glad she didn't have to lock them in a room together that would have been hard to pull off. Still, his birthday coming up, fathers day missed, she went into the living room with the gift tucked under her arm. "эй мудак."

Kavinsky was sitting on the middle of the couch, hunched over so that he could scrawl into a notebook that sat on the middle of the coffee table with various receipts and bills stacked into neat piles beside him. White brows were furrowed in immense concentration that he hadn't noticed that Mory had stepped into the room until her rough Russian hit his ears.
His head lifted sharply, lips pressed into a thin line when he shot a look her way. "язык," he shot back knowing that it would largely go ignored, but he was her legal guardian and he had to try to pass on a better message.
The papers he was working on were collected, tucked neatly into the folder beneath the notebook which was closed to prying eyes and Kavinsky turned his attention to his charge.
"What's up?"

"Yeah, it is a language, which I'm learning and getting better at. Уроки Duolingo окупились." She sassed right back, grinning ear to ear. No doubt, K would give her another look for it. He might be her guardian, but that didn't mean she was the perfect ward. Going over to seat herself next to him, feet happily propped up on the coffee table, (sans shoes- she wasn't some heathen), Mordred felt her nerves fraying. Oh, putting on bravado was something she was good at but this.. emotional stuff was hard. Especially when it came to expressing herself to the typically standoffish Kavinsky. Not that she feared him pushing her away anymore just- she wasn't sure if it was something he'd like. "Well, what is up is the every present opression of capitalism." She was stalling. "And... ah..." s**t, she should have planned this better. "Look." She said, hoping he'd not scoff at her and tell her that it was stupid and not needed but dang it she wanted to just.. show him it mattered. To her. "I know I'm not.. the best kid and you didn't have to take me in but you did and-" She sniffled. "Damn it, here!" She shoved the package at him. "It's.. just open it."

Kavinsky did his best to look unimpressed but the edges of his mouth were curling in what would have seemed like an uncharacteristic smile where the recipient not Mory. So much of the girl reminded him of who he was when he was younger and he could only hope that he was half of what his Baba had been to him to her.
"Mory," Kavinsky said slowly, watching her sputter and get flustered in a very not-Mory manner. "You're the only kid I'd want to look after." He said it so bluntly that it was lacking emotion.
He was more surprised by the package she was shoving at him, which he carefully accepted and then worked on opening. "You didn't have to get me anything," K said.
He was surprised she'd thought to give him anything at all. "Seriously, what's this for?"

God he was asking her to explain herself. Part of her screamed to answer him with how she didn't own him anything, not even an explanation. But the other part, the part that had thought this a good idea and had committed to it knew if she didn't explain, he'd guilt her into it and being guilt-ed was the worst. "I... I missed fathers day." She groused out, armed crossed and leaning away from her guardian, avoiding eye contact. "And you're birthday is coming up but- I forgot to get you something so this is just late alright? Your birthday gift is different and I just-" She wiggled in her seat uncertainty awash on her face. "I- I know not everyone thinks you're a good person but you are and.. I'm happy you chose me." The present itself was one of those self decorate father's day frames, only, the letters had been painted over for Russian Cyrillic. Inside, was a clear candid photo of Kavinsky. One of him sporting a rare smile as he'd been wearing an apron and singing a Russian folk song, Mordred grinning in the background. But the forcus was on the cooking Peitro. The man Mory had in her way, claimed as her dad. "Пьетро, все в порядке? Чтобы ... позвонить тебе, мой папа?" She didn't look at him, but the nervousness was palatable. "I mean, if you don't like it or it's too much I can get something else- I saved money from doing errand for those rich folks on the west end so it wouldn't be a big deal you know? I-" She babbled.

Had Mory not sleepily mumbled papa while she'd dozed off during one of their movie nights, none of what was happening would have made sense to him. Even then, he was startled by her statements and even more so by the gift.
How she'd gotten such a picture of them, he didn't know but it was delicately set on the arm rest of the couch so that his hands were free when he looked at her. "You chose me too, Mory," he reminded her, one of those rare smiles creeping across his lips.
His tongue slipped out to wet said lips and he reached for the girl's hip to draw her in. "If you wanna call me papa, you can call me papa," Kavinsky told her, his voice softer than it should have been for someone like him. "Мори, ты мой ребенок, мое маленькое солнце."
In an almost uncharacteristic action, he reached out to tuck her hair behind her ear and off her forehead so when he pressed chaps lips against it in a chaste kiss, there was nothing in his way. "мой солнышко."

She was scared, for a variety of reasons. Peitro wasn't emotionally open, he liked his privacy, and while he was nice, he was also gruff and tended to be prickly. She wanted to have a family again. She wanted to be happy again, and being here, with him felt like family. It felt like home. Safe, happy, warm- she had someone who cared and it- it made her think that maybe she could have a normal life again. Maybe a bit unconventional, but normal. With school and friends and silly family vacations and drama. She was scared, because for all the kindness he'd shown her, a tiny part thought he'd still regect her silly thoughts, her want to have him not just as her legal guardian but as a 'dad'. So when he smiled it was like someone had gone and decided that Mordred should have all her emotions happen at once, and begin to fight back the urge to cry, (and also begin to lose said fight). Hands wrapped around him in a tight hug, as she buried her face into his side. "You're-" The snort to fight back her growing inability to hold back her sheer happiness was loud, and rather undignified, "-You're going to go to all my parent-teacher meetings for when I get into fights. And have to bail me out of jail- and when prom comes around I'm going to date the baddest boy in the whole school, just to piss you off." She sniffed again, smiling and holding him tight. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

There was something about the whole situation that left Pietro Vladmir Ilya Ivan Kavinsky very, very warm. It was a feeling he hadn't quite felt since the death of his father.
No, he could remember the last time he felt this...happy. It was the last time he'd been tinkering in the garage with papa and Ellis.
Having a family that extended past his best friend and occasional lover was a strange concept that he wasn't sure he knew how to handle but he wanted to. The idea of having his little makeshift family was increasingly important to him.
He had no idea what would happen when he helped out the scared little girl when she attacked him but he didn't regret it. Not one bit.
"Вы моя семья," he told her, pulling her closer to him so that when she cried, she could do it into his shoulder.

Her cries turned into smal hiccups as Slowly, Mory came down from her mini emotional roller coaster. Snorting back the snot and wiping the stray tears on her sleeve, she wasn't sure what came now. Legally he was her guardian and- now it way okay to call him dad. Papa. "You-" She drew back one large snort, try to keep her voice even and vaguely threatening. "-You can't tell anybody about this okay? I- I have a reputation you know!" She was supposed to be stronger than this but in a way, she was glad. She could cry and he didn't mock her or push her away. He held her, like family. "You can't even tell Banks until you're married. This is.. this is a family secret now." She looked at him, smiling. "Because we're family now." She let herself collapse next to him, curled into his side. "A weird but legit family."

"No one needs to know about us getting emotional," he agreed, voice choking a little bit as he kept his own tears at bay. It was a weird experience for him, to be feeling something so raw that wasn't irritation, anger, or something else.
Mory meant something to him that he hadn't had in some time, his relationship with Ellis aside, and even when compared to his tentative relationship with Banks it wasn't remotely the same.
"Dunno that you'll ever see that, but yeah. You're my family Mory," he mumbled, pressing chapped lips against her hairline and tugging her even closer.
No one needed to know how soft they were for each other. Just them.
