Name: Lafemy
Age: 18
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft: Healercraft
Rank: Candidate
Location: High Reaches Weyr

Physical Description: Bottle-green eyes peer from below ink-black curls, the only gift of his erstwhile father. A stout, 'sturdy' build serves them well in the colder months at High Reaches, though it lends them something of a more common look. No great beauty, nor handsome Adonis, he's not ugly, but he doesn't quite shine the way some young adults seem to. Lafemy has astoundingly mature sideburns for his age, and could grow a beard with more ease than some men in their thiritiess.

Personality:Lafemy wants to know how everything works. What does this do, and how, and why? He has a million questions, and does his best with factual answers (no matter how detailed), not opinions or theories. He is willing to put in the time to learn every little thing about whatever has his interest, even to the point of exhausting his teachers or mentors with an overabundance of asking. He struggles to accept 'because it is' or 'I don't know' as answers—why don't you know, who would know, that can't just happen for no reason! Once something is accepted as fact, that's what it is to Lafemy. Newer ideas or updated rules or facts take time to process, because they were so certain of the previous iteration.

With such a vast store of knowledge, he often feels compelled to share it...though this most often makes him come off as a bit of a know-it-all. No one wanted to know all that, but he didn't get the clue? That's usual. Similarly, he doesn't seem to understand the difference between socially acceptable questions and intrusive, personal questions. If he's interested in some part of someone's life, no matter how sensitive it might be to that person, he'll probably just bluntly ask about it.

A lot of his intrusive, invasive behavior is unfortunately the fault of his sire (not his foster father!)—like him, he struggles to grow attached to anyone without prolonged, intense contact. His emotions are subtle, not strong, and the satisfaction of solving a mystery, or learning something, is just so much stronger than any sense of shame or upset over having been scolded for asking in the first place. He is rarely angry, or sad, or even notably happy. Overall that leaves him safely contented most of the time, but at the cost of having a more difficult time forging social relationships.
Positive Trait List Patient, inquisitive, practical.
Negative Trait List A know-it-all, intrusive, emotionally apathetic.

History: Lafemy was born to the creche of Benden Weyr. He grew up communally, counting the whole Weyr as family until he turned about five or six turns old. At that point a budding interest in healing (he was found more than once trying to care for or tend to injured animals, including insects, and once, a wher-ravaged tunnelsnake!) happened to align with a request to foster from a middle-aged dragonhealer. He was about to leave the Weyr for High Reaches following the loss of his mate, and as she'd never given him a child, he was hoping to find a child to fill his life with, and to teach. Their interests aligned, and the man became father in all but blood, teaching him all he knew in their new, frosty home.

The dragons of course fascinated the youngster, and it was only when he entered his teens and realized that he would be allowed to stand to impress once that he recalled his origins not as the healer's child, but as some unknown rider's child. It did not change his feelings for his foster father, but knowing his origins made the offer of candidacy more appealing. As a member of the Weyr, he knew he would be allowed to join in at any time, even as he kept up his practice of learning healing from his father. Which path was right? Riding? Or healing? The quandary consumed him enough that worries about who his actual father was, and why he'd left him, were buried under more immediate things.

Other: Anything else you want to add?

Adoptable Ad Lafemy: 18 turns old. The child of greenrider L'an and a previous lover. Was fostered to a dragonhealer at High Reaches since childhood. Never knew either parent, but has recently learned that his/her father is a rider.

Approved.

However, I would like to note an important distinction. A theory has strong scientific basis and has been put to testing. In order for a hypothesis to become a theory, an experiment must be successfully replicated by multiple independent scientists. Where theories cannot be conclusively proven via the scientific method, the onus is on the scientific community to attempt to disprove them.

Good examples of theories that fall into that category are Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Darwin's Theory of Evolution, etcetera.

By contrast, hypotheses do not necessarily have any scientific basis, and therefore need not have a basis in fact. Where you have used theories, you ought to have used hypotheses.

This has been an unnecessary lesson in science by yours truly.
