The Weyr had prepared for this day. Tents were setup outside, with Padmia sparing no expense. While this was an internal affair for High Reaches Weyr residents only, the Headwoman wanted to make sure that the newest riders were given an appropriate send off as they moved from the title of weyrling to wingrider. Roasted meats, cheeses, sweet rolls, meat rolls, and a few soups were all set out, along with some salads, vegetable dishes, and fruits. A few bubbly pies made up dessert, and some chilled wines and beers. This was, after all, a day where the senior weyrlings would finally be free of the last of their restrictions. Come this evening, they would dragonriders of Pern, representing their wings, and all of High Reaches everywhere they went.

Weyrleader D'mon had taken into account V'mel's notes on each weyrling; he'd spoken to his Wingleader's and taken into consideration their recommendations and desires. While some might think it was done randomly, there was always a reason behind which Wing took in what wingrider. Some were natural matches, while others might need more of a challenge; some were given a final wing assignment simply because the color dragon they rode needed to help bolster numbers. Regardless of who went where, Final Assignments had been handed out privately, and secretly, to the Wingleaders just that morning.

The midday meal had been light, and the evening meal turned into a mid-afternoon feast instead. It was a rest day for the Weyr, and a time had been given for the senior weyrlings to assemble in their Gather Best. Their dragons were encouraged to be scrubbed and oiled, and were allowed to get a front row seat to watch the affair from the sidelines. The younger junior weyrlings, who were fast growing, were also allowed to sit and watch with their weyrlings, to see what they might someday aspire to become.

Each Wing had its own table outside, with food and drink upon it. Each Wing was required to sit together, with extra seats available so they might welcome their newest wingmates into their group together. Mingling and congratulations would likely happen after the ceremony ended, certainly, but it would be good to bond with their newest wingmates and help morale.

Instead of giving a speech, D'mon allowed V'mel to stand up and speak.

"Weyrlings. Today, you are riders. The best of what High Reaches, of what Pern has to offer. Thirteen months ago, your lives were changed, irrevocably. Who you are, what you could become, it drew your dragons to you. Now, with dedication and hard work, you are finally worthy of them. Together you will fight against Thread, and fight to keep the Weyr strong. You are the blood and bone of this place, and all of you, each one, should be praised and respected for shedding your blood and bone in defending it. Every man, woman, and child on Pern is counting on you to continue to uphold that line, to keep proving, day after day, that your dragons made the right choices. Today, I can tell you that I believe, firmly, that they did."

Once V'mel spoke, having never been a man of many words, D'mon, and the other Wingleaders stood. D'mon stepped forward,a proud smile on his face as he turned toward the weyrlings. "There's nothing more I can say that V'mel hasn't already said. You've worked hard, through blood, sweat, and tears, to get to this moment. While not all who began this journey are here to see its end, they are not forgotten, or their sacrifice written off. Every one of you is an asset to High Reaches Weyr, and to Pern. Every one of you is important to the success of your Wing, the success of the Weyr, and for the success of Pern! Don't forget that all of your are equally important in this battle against Thread. All of you are heroes. Thank you for your continued sacrifice, hardwork, and dedication. For Wing. For Weyr. For Pern."

Turning to his Wingleaders, he nodded to them, giving them the cue to start walking through the assembled senior weyrlings. As was tradition, the Wingleaders would go down the line of Candidates and stop in front of their assigned rider pair. They would inform the weyrling that they were honored to have them fight in their Wing, and would give them the traditional dragonrider salute. As the weyrlings responded in turn, giving salutes, and often times smiles, they would then be ushered over to their chosen Wing's tables, amid cheers, back slaps, whoops, hollars, and exuberant forms of welcome. Given the amount of Wings, not every one would wind up with a new wingrider -- but that was not uncommon.

Once each weyrling had been ushered to their new Wings table, local Harpers struck up some music, and the wine began freely flowing. This was meant to be a party, after all. It wasn't as lavish an affair as a Hatching Feast, or some Turn's End celebration, but it would give them all something to smile about! D'mon was thank that no weyrling would be left behind, kept in V'mel's care until they proved they were worthy to be promoted. Many of the weyrlings would immediately join Threadfall in their wings in the next few days.... Though there was one who wasn't quite yet 16. V'tre. The green rider would still sit with his Wing, still attend drills, Sweeps, and be an equal -- but on Threadfall days, he would fight with the Queen's Wing until his next naming day.

This is an ORP but feel free to make PRP is you'd like! I know our ORPs tend to fizzle, haha. I used an RNG to decide most of this, and did a little fudging if someone got two browns or something.

Congratulations all! To all Wingriders, go and meet your newest wingmates!

Ichta and Blue Aurinkoth - Tornado

This doesn't feel like my Gather Best. Ichta wasn't wearing the same green dress she'd dressed up for the Hatching Feast in, but rather a simple blue one that matched the hide of her beloved lifemate so well. She'd worn it a few times, actually, and perhaps that was why it didn't feel like a particularly fancy dress to her. Would those of her new Wing-to-be (oh Faranth, they were going to be real riders now) care if she didn't look like the most stand out young lady in the group? Would she mind?

Maybe she would be left until the end, nobody wanting a simple girl like Ichta - only a bluerider, after all, though she didn't see that as a fault. No, it was some of the fuss about color politics that really made her worry that others would. It had surrounded their particular group for some reason. Well, she'd handle that if she got to that point.

Timliness was certainly a factor for such an event, and Aurinkoth being cleanly scrubbed and freshly oiled gave the light blue quite a striking appearance amongst his siblings, standing out like a glowing beacon amongst them. Especially when he settled next to Elzebuth - twice his length and much darker in hide. Is yours nervous? he asked the brown. Ichta could only offer a look as though she was going to be sick from nerves in turn, nodding to G'ran as she went to find a seat. Really, not being on display did a lot to settle her stomach. Though maybe sitting near Nadry or Dr'stan or just someone she knew would have helped too.

If she just kept her mouth shut until everything was over, she'd be fine. It just felt like a very large affair with a lot of stuff happening all at once, but very slowly all at once. Speeches and watching faces look over her and then walk on. Maybe at the end, it would be just her and they'd tell her to get out of the Weyr because she was a disappointment. They have no reason to think that, myIchta. You have performed admirably during Threadfall and we make too good of a pair for them to make us leave! he reassured her, offering a caress of his mind against hers.

It meant that as V'kenti finally took his pause in front of her, she didn't look physically ill at the thought of everything. Instead, she offered her salute in turn and quickly made her way to join what would hopefully come to feel as much of a family as their Weyrling group had become to her. Aurinkoth, on the other hand, was delighted, sending a surge of sunshine to his father. Because clearly they now had the best, most lovely girl in their wing, right? Of course, Cynosuth was also there, and Aurinkoth could have no complaints!

Simply a lot of dragons to say hello to!

A'dras of Bronze Gareth--Wingleader of Hurricane

Being a Wingleader had been tough at first, though A'dras had easily stood up and taken the role with pride and done well. He was dressed in his best Leathers, wanting to look the part of a well oiled and determine commander, but not wanting to seem intimidating either. He had received the assignments as the other Wingleaders had. He was very pleased with the riders he had been assigned, they all showed potential from the reports he had read, the would fit in well with Hurricane wing.

As V'mel began to speak A'dras turned his blue eyes to watch the man, lifting them from the table before him. While V'mel had not trained him as a weyrling the older man did know what he was doing and churned out well disciplined wingriders. It was only once D'mon had finished speaking and nodded to them that A'dras had moved over to gather those in his wing.

Striding over to where the senior weyrlings...no Wingriders stood, A'dras stopped in front of four of them in turn. Ellain of green Varionnith was the first and he smiled at the girl before welcoming her to Hurricane wing and pointing over to their table. Next was E'tem of green Curuth, A'dras did the same as before, pointing the young man to the table where Hurricane wing was gathered. Melleck of green Veledath and Jynnat of blue Begath received the same, though this time A'dras followed behind them.

"Hurricane wing!" He spoke a bit louder, as the music from the harpers and chatter from the other tables worked to drown him out. "Please welcome the newest members of our wing!" He turned to the newest wingriders and smiled once more. "I am A'dras of bronze Gareth, your Wingleader. This is Ay'ril of bronze Yffengeth and T'at of brown Nessuth, my wingseconds. If any of you have concerns of any kind, or you need help please do not hesitate to come to any of us, or your fellow wingmates." Grabbing a goblet, A'dras raised it high, to lead his Wingriders in a toast, without really saying anything else.

fela and blue sophrosunth - tornado

Oh, how Fela loved feasts. Not just for the food, mind you, but for the mental break everyone was allowed--and the physical one too, of course. There was always a level of tension at the weyr, active Threadfall or not, and it was good to see usually stern faces break into smiles and laughter over a cold cup. More than that, Sophrosunth could not stop fretting over what possible wing matches may occur and go straight on to mulling over the actual results and what they could bring in the future. What an upgrade!

Thankfully he was composed as usual during the ceremony, perhaps nudging a sibling or two with soothing thoughts, while Fela fought to keep from smiling the whole time. Thirteen months had gone by so quick! And now there she stood, a squat woman beside a gangly blue, returning V'kenti's salute and refraining from winking. Faranth knew she'd have plenty of time to bustle about and flirt with the single men that day.

"Come, my sweets!" she crooned once the ceremony was over, arms stretched to gather Ichta, Demathra, and Dr'stan and ferry them to get their drinks together, that they might all engage their wing as one. "Ohhh, don't you all look lovely and sporting, eh? We must start the toast."

Sophrosunth chuffed as he watched His move and sat off to the side, eyes a serene blue-green. He radiated a quiet joy but was quite unsure where to begin in the joyous chaos.

efrideet and white asuracath - hurricane

"HOO-RAH!" Efrideet whooped, obliging the wingleader's command once the new wingriders had taken their spots within the wing, grinning so wide that her teeth dazzled against her dark skin. Her white made to leave her side for a moment, and the woman slid her hand down the part of Asuracath's spine that she could reach. Mind the volume, please. Just this once.

Asuracath snorted. While her eyes were usually whirlpools of blue and red, they had managed to stay the former color throughout the ceremony. Mostly. There was a flicker of annoyance now as her tail twitched. THEY MUST HEAR ME, she insisted. YOUR CHEER WAS LOUD. WHY CAN MINE NOT BE? THIS IS A JOYOUS OCCASION.

Efrideet sighed into her cup and drank.

Stretching her neck up, as if she in her dense, fifteen foot glory could make a difference doing so, the white cried to all the weyrlings, YOU HAVE ALL DONE WELL, YOUNGLINGS. DRINK AND EAT WELL, AND KNOW THAT YOU JOIN MOST HONORABLE THREADSLAYERS! THE BLOODING HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN.

Nadry and Brown Menankith - Burning Aces

Nadry had been anticipating this day, hoping for it, for months now...and had been dreading it for weeks.  It was an enormous, uncertain change, and there was no guarantee that she would end up with even one of the people she was closest to and not, say, her brother.  Oh, she hoped, she did, she was desperate to be in Tsunami Wing, from the moment Illa had been named wingsecond.  She still and likely would always look upon her with a puppy-like adoration; she'd been starry-eyed over the fierce, dashing rider from the start, all those months ago when she'd introduced herself.  It was pure hero worship, and add in all the help and lessons and talks Nadry (and Menankith!) had received, and the resulting closeness that had made Illa like to family, and of course there was nowhere she wanted to be more than in her wing.

But there were a lot of wings, and she knew the chances weren't great.  She tried to remind herself, standing in line in the soft blue dress she'd rejected for the previous feast, that she had no reason to expect to get what she wanted...but she still hoped.  She couldn't not.  It took everything she had not to fidget, and not to look every which way, from one dear person to another.  She fixed her gaze on her freshly-oiled Menankith instead, and tried to breathe normally.  When the wingleaders started walking among them, it got harder, and she watched as Ichta and Dr'stan went to Tornado.  She watched, and watched, and suppressed the urge to wring her hands - especially when C'lusi went to Tsunami.  Oh, Faranth.

And then, as the wingleaders continued to go about collecting weyrlings, whittling down their numbers one by one, A'gus of Burning Aces came to her, and her heart broke.  Almost immediately she felt terrible for it, she had told herself not to get her hopes up, and it wasn't fair for her to be disappointed.  Not that thinking that made her feel any better.  But she hid it well, squashed it down and smiled and saluted, and looked perfectly content.

It was fine.  She'd be fine.

Menankith flooded her with reassurance, trying to bolster her up.  It is alright, Mine!  We will be with Basanuth and His, see?  And Librath, too! If he was being perfectly honest, he had hoped for much the same as Nadry, but he was glad to be with his dark blue brother at least, although it was another blue brother his gaze came to rest on. I am glad that you will be with Fenrith, he said to Macuith. He is good.

Fenrith, you will watch out for my Macuith, won't you? He couldn't help just a touch of sadness, too, on the cusp of separation from his siblings.  Not just Macuith, but Elzebuth, Aurinkoth, Cynosuth... But at the same time, he was eager to finally be getting started.  It was a bittersweet mix of feelings.

Demanthra and Green Monath- Tornado

Demanthra had been looking forward to this day for quite awhile, but also worried at the same time. They were finally becoming wingriders and would know what their Wing would be. Part of her wondered if she would be put into one of the wings her family was in. Thankfully, except for Harbringers, at least one of her family was in every wing. Ash'il was in Burning Aces, Ashlyn and their father were in Hurricane, their mother was in Trespassers, T'rel was in Tsunami, and T'ye was in Tornado. Not to mention, Tornado was also where Monath's father was as well, Part of her wanted to be in the wing her mother was in, but she just hoped she would have some family in the wing she would be part of. And which of her fellow Weyrlings would be joining her in the Wing, only time would tell.

So she got Monath cleaned and oiled, making her green shine like the moon that she was. Then she got into a beautiful green dress, that had been a gift from her mother. Monath had given her approval, saying it made her glow as much as her hide. The green rider decided to wear her hair down today, since she usually did when she was going to a feast. Once the pair was ready, they headed for where everyone would be gathering. With a deep breath, Demanthra went to stand with the other Weyrlings, giving them a smile. Then she listened as V'mel and then D'mon both gave speeches, her chest filling with pride from their words.

Was there any doubt, Mine? Of course you all were meant for us, we couldn't possibly chose wrong. I knew as soon as you touched my egg that you were the one. No one else would have done for me,Monath thought to her rider, filling the young woman with warmth. Of course she had known who her rider was, she wouldn't have accepted anything less than perfect for her. In her eyes, her rider was perfect and deserved every good thing..even if Monath had to push her to grab it.

Thanks, dear Moon, I appreciate those words. Alright, let's see what wing we end up in, shall we?Demanthra thought back fondly. She watched as the Wingleaders began to approach each of them, she waited as patiently as she could. She knew most of the leaders by appearance at least, thanks to her siblings, but didn't know about all of them. She didn't have to wait long before V'kenti of Tornado came over to her and saluted, which she returned the gesture. She felt a sense of joy rising up in her green, since this meant they would be in the same wing as Monath's father. It was also the wing of Demanthra's brother in law, so they should be in good hands. At least they would be under the watch of one of their parents, even if not her own. Before she could head over to the table, she felt Fela grab ahold of her. She couldn't help but let out a soft laugh as the blue rider ushered her, Ichta, and Dr'stan to get some drinks.

"Fela, you know the wingleader should start the toast. Give him time to do so,"she teased the other lightly. She was glad she had three other of the former Weyrling group in her new wing.

Alumet of Gold Zenobiath - Wildfire

This day had been a long time coming. She knew well that it meant that she was a fully fledged Queenrider, that it meant that she and Zenobiath would be given more duties and responsibilities around the weyr, but thankfully, they were one of many. That thought...well, it might not be Zeno's favourite one, but it helped Alumet cope with the understanding that she now had a place greater than what she'd even begun to hope for when she'd stepped in to candidacy. The Gold knew, from the beginning, that they were destined for greatness, the best, in Zenobiath's mind. Alumet's spine straightened as shel istened to V'mel, her eyes moving over the man with a quiet, solemn understanding. She knew what this meant, what came from here, and the Gold crooned softly, My most beautiful hearts, you are well. Look at all you have become in so short a time. We should stand in pride today, for we are now Queens in our own right, rather than Weyrlings, and if I have my way, we shall continue to grow here. Worry yourself not. Her dragon's words brought a small smile to her face, and though she wanted nothing more than to reach out and touch a Gold hide, she stood proud with the others for now.

Olliah was her wingleader, and the smile that flicked to Alumet's face was real, raw. She'd dressed in a lovely dress of pale lilac that complimented her fair skin, but...it made her nervous, just a bit. It showed the nasty, thick threadscore on her shoulder, and for a girl that was a little more than proud of her appearance, it made her a bit self-conscious. Zenobiath's mental scoff at her attitude towards it got the Rider to toss a look at her beloved. Rude. Shaking her head, she let her hair down and moved to the table, taking a drink of wine all too happily. Shards and shells, she'd missed this! Now...Well, she wanted to socialize, but a bit of a drink first...something to take the edge off.

Wingsecond T'at of Brown Nessuth - Hurricane

While he wasn't much for words, leading FOUR kids to their table got a loud, low cheer from the Rider. His gather best included a shirt that showed off the two tattoos on his body, with two more started recently. He was, after all, an artist, and it was his old life's work, doing this. Watching these new Wingriders, he couldn't help but grin at them. Beautiful. Absolutely wonderful to see new life join the wing. The first one he moved to was Jynnat, offering a hand, "Jynnat of Blue Begath. Welcome to Hurricane. T'at of Brown Nessuth. I'm one of your Wingseconds. Don't really like talking, but if you need help, you can talk to me." He'd go to all of them in turn, but he'd start with this one.

Nessuth was trumpeting his glee, perched on the side as he took in the new dragons. Three lovely Greens, and a Blue. His affection and admiration was passed to them, scarred wings tucking to his side as he moved nearer. He might be marked with the life he'd led, and a few recent threadscores, but he was proud of each one. Let the new ones feel welcome!

C'ryn of Bronze Aresoth--Harbingers

A turn over and another phase of life was through. This was expected to come, they had looked forward to this day since they impressed...maybe even before they had impressed. A part of him couldn't believe the fact that he was now officially a wingrider, a bronze rider like his father. Of course he didn't have the prestige as many other bronzeriders did, there were quite a few at the weyr after all, but it didn't stop the ambition that C'ryn or Aresoth felt.

As the day grew nearer and nearer Aresoth had been musing about what wing they might be put in. All of them were well and good though there were some that seemed a better fit in the eyes of the bronze. He had voiced all these thoughts again as C'ryn had scrubbed and oiled him until he shined, his dark hide shinning beautifully in the sun.

For himself, C'ryn had dressed in a new dark grey shirt, black soft-wherhide pants and placed a new wherhide jacket over all of this. His wherhide boots, that he had shined and oiled as well, were pulled on over his pants as he affixed a belt...It had been strange looking at himself when he paused to look in the mirror, funny how a turn and impressing could easily make one grow up to not look how you remembered.

Out with the others, C'ryn stood straight, his head held high and chest pushed out. He had pulled his dark hair back, tying it up with a ribbon that matched Aresoth's hide. He hoped he was the picture of a bronzerider, what everyone was expecting him to look like. He could feel the confidence radiating off of Aresoth as he watched from the side, sending that confidence and love to his rider. Of course they looked like a bronzerider, they were one of course.

Being approached by Z'tir had C'ryn's heart jump. Perhaps he had hoped he would have been placed in his father's wing but...being in Harbingers was a great opportunity. He started to make his way over to the Harbinger's table as Z'tir moved to the other werylings but he paused, eyes moving over the other tables. Seeing everyone divvied up made him feel a small sense of sadness. They were no longer weyrlings together, full fledged riders, and they now had another group they were a part of. There was a chance many of them would never speak or see one another like they had before, it was a little bittersweet to him.

Deciding on a course of action, C'ryn made his way over to where Alumet was, making sure he saluted the other Goldriders and her before speaking. "I hope I'm not intruding." His dark hazel eyes had taken in her appearance, she truly was breathtaking. "I just wanted to come over here and...tell you how lovely you looked." Hopefully he wasn't as awkward as he use to be, or at least he didn't seem to care if he sounded stupid. "If you feel up to it later, I was wondering if you would like to dance?" He'd wait for her answer before heading to his Wing table, though he understood completely if she told him no. She had many others who would wish for her time after all.

Jynnat and Blue Begath - Hurricane

The young woman stood proudly. There had been moments when she wasn't sure she ever would. But they had survived weyrlinghood, and their first brush with Thread. Despite their scars, they stood proudly. Jynnat lifted her head proudly as V'mel called them riders. After she'd been badly scored on her right shoulder and arm, she'd worked hard to be able to join the ranks for this day.

We did it. She said to her blue. Trickster hummed his approval from her shoulder. Together. It is our day to shine together Jynnatmine. I couldn't have done it without you. She sent her love to her steadfast, star-marked, blue. Jynnat almost flexed her right arm instinctively to be sure it still worked fairly well. Instead she resisted. She had spent many hours in physical therapy. They surely wouldn't let her stand here if she wouldn't be up to the rigors of a rider.

It wasn't long before the wingleaders began walking among the new recruits. Every once in awhile one would stop and single one out for their wing. She watched as others were selected and began walking towards their new tables. Which wing will we get, do you think? Mmmm I am sure it'll be the best wing! Cause only the best wing would clearly pick me. Begath puffed up his chest, which earned a small chuckle from his rider.

Suddenly someone was standing in front of her. Jynnat looked up to see Wingleader A'dras standing before her. She smiled as he welcomed her to Hurricane. "Thank you sir. We're glad to be serving under you." Looks like it's Hurricane. Ooo that sounds like fun, he commented as he watched His head to the new table.

Jynnat nodded to those new riders around her. Would it be similar to flying with the weyrling wing? They were all taught the same way, but they were all different individuals than the ones she'd trained with. She was sure she'd quickly settle in to the new routine, particularly after she caught sight of Ashlyn at the table. Jynnat listened to the quick speech from A'dras. She nodded to the wingseconds. Surely she'd know them well before long. Just as she was picking up a cup of wine, one of the wingseconds came up to her much sooner than she expected.

"Thank you T'at. I look forward to flying with you all."

Banashe and Brown Severith - Hurricane

Banashe stretched out in her seat among Hurricane wing as she watched the new recruits approach. All greens and blue. Interesting. She sipped her wing and clapped as the young new riders were greeted by their new wing. Do you think any will be interested Severith? Perhaps. Time will tell mine. We have time to feel them out slowly.
