Hartley hadn't ever been to a school fair before and couldn't remember being to a county fair either so the whole experience was a new thing. He was enjoying himself though and so far nothing weird had happened. It was just him and Afton and a bright afternoon and a surprising amount of fun. They'd played a few games, listened to some of the music, gone on a few rides and now he was nibbling on some cotton candy while Afton ate a massive hot dog. "You know, i didn't know fresh cotton candy was this good." he smiled while they were sitting out of the way watching the rest of the fair go on around them. "I'm glad you convinced me coming out here was a good idea." Otherwise they probably would have spent the day inside playing games or something similar. It was good to get out, good that Afton wasn't worried that something bad was going to happen.

"I didn't know you'd never had fresh cotton candy so far." He laughed softly as he looked over to his friend, contemplating whether or not he wanted to finish off the rest of the hot dog or if he wanted something else. The fresh lemonade he'd gotten was good for washing it down either way, although now he was wishing he'd gotten a bigger size of that and a smaller dog. "Also, getting out was a great idea. Will still stay a great idea if we pause in a pit to put on some more sunscreen so neither of us wind up toasting." Things had been mostly quiet on the abnormality front lately, something that he was grateful for. It made it more appealing to get out and do things, to enjoy what more they could of summer as it slowly ticked away. "So. What do you want to do next?"

"Family never did anything like this." He smiled, popping another piece of the pink fluffy candy in his mouth. It was delicious and soft and he was going to have to get more to take home before the day was over. "So no fresh cotton candy. Just the sort you get at the movie theater and in bags at the store." Which was good but wasn't the same as fresh made now that he'd had it. "Sunscreen sounds like a good idea. I mean, i'm likely to fry if i'm not careful and so are you." He was glad they' brought some along since there weren't really man places to hide in the shade. "There's more rides to go on? Just .. not the fun house."

"No fun house. Promise." They dealt with enough odd and strange things that jump scares weren't high up on his own personal list, nevermind knowing that they weren't something that Hartley had much of a liking for either. He hated the idea of his friend being frightened, even if having an excuse to keep him close wasn't all that bad. "Also, I get the feeling this sort of thing isn't what your family would've been interested in anyways. Too much out and about without the protection of a greenhouse or science." He teased gently, lightly nudging Hartley's elbow with his own. "Not that there's anything wrong with either of those things, but..."

"My family liked going out it's just ... we liked doing it more in the actual outdoors and not where there were going to be a ton of people and processed food." He knew his family was a little weird and that he'd missed out but getting to do things like this with Afton was nice. "Though, science would be nice but I didn't see much of that here and it doesn't seem like that's the sort of thing they were going for." He finished off his cotton candy, licking the last of the sugar off his fingers. "What rides didn't we go on so far?"

"Good thing about cotton candy is that there's not room for a whole lot of process. It's just a lot of sugar." He ditched the last of his dog before reaching over to snag a tuft of cotton candy for emphasis. The cone was so large compared to Hart that it almost looked comedic and ridiculous... And also a little bit adorable too. "Haven't gone on the tilt-a-whirl yet, but that doesn't seem like the best idea after eating. There's the tunnel of love, but..." He shook his head, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. It was awkward enough, in theory, and there was also the fact that they split the lines in two and you couldn't guarantee who you would be getting on it with. "What about the ferris wheel? We can get a bird's eye view of town?"

"Ferris wheel might be better. Not that i mind getting in a swan boat but the line for that seemed really long and sort of weird. Plus we can finish the cotton candy while we're getting a good view of town?" It would give Afton's food time to settle too if he did want to go on the tilt-a-whirl later too. "We can also try the games again? You were pretty good at the can one so maybe you can actually get one of the toy's this time?" Not that he had any idea what Afton would do with one of the toys but it was the thought that counted. "I'd suggest goldfish but i'm not sure the dorms would like us keeping those around."

"They might if we kept them in a bowl and didn't get a tank, but... I wouldn't do that to a goldfish." If he was going to get a fish to keep at his place at all it would be a koi. They had better colors, overall, and they were fine with smaller spaces and a lack of filtration. "Ferris wheel first and then we'll see about winning some games, hm?" He nudged his friend lightly in that direction so they could hop in line to wait on the ride. They'd had a good day so far, there was no sense in wasting it by just waiting around and they could dab on a bit of sunscreen while lingering in line.

"No goldfish in bowls." he laughed softly as they headed to the line. "I could put up a small tank in my apartment but they don't really like pets and would probably make me get rid of it. So for the best if we don't." He pulled the sunscreen out of the bag he'd brought, holding it out for his friend to take first. "Too bad they probably sold tickets to be on the Ferris wheel when the fireworks go off. I bet the view from up there will be fantastic." Something he would have liked to see but he doubted that was possible now. "We should also get some more of that lemon-aid when we get off the ride."

He squeezed a dab of sunscreen out onto the palm of his hand, dipping the tip of his finger into it before lightly tapping Hartley's nose. "Sometimes you've got to challenge the rules and do something that you want to do, even if someone else doesn't think it's the greatest idea." He was entirely of the opinion that if Hart wanted a fish he should get one. It wasn't like he had to get a giant tank that would cause problems... "More lemonade sounds like a great idea." He nodded to confirm, rubbing a bit more sunscreen onto his own arms after.

He rubbed the bit of sunscreen into his nose with a soft laugh. "I don't really think breaking the rules is how it's supposed to work even if I would really like a goldfish." He took the bottle of sunscreen from Afton so he could properly put some on his face and his arms. "The rules are made to be broken thing works better in movies than it does in real life." Hartley was glad though that Afton liked the idea of getting more lemonade. It was delicious and he wanted more just to have it, even if it was also completely refreshing with all the heat.

"You're right. The rules are made to be broken thing totally applies for movies too. It's why I usually wear the cargo pants when we're going to see something at the theater. It's waaay easier to sneak snacks in that way." He gave his friend a gentle nudge, flashing him a broad grin as they stepped up further in line.

"That's ..... that's not at all what I meant." Even if he did know that Afton snuck candy into the theater for them before it didn't mean they were supposed to. And he felt a little bad every time they did. It wasn't always avoidable though, they were broke college kids and candy at the theater was expensive. He nudged his friend gently as they settled in line. "You just like living on the edge and seeing what boundaries you can push."

"Sometimes. Every now and then, maybe." He flashed Hartley a grin, tossing his empty cup in the trash can they passed while waiting in line so he didn't have to hold on to it anymore. With his hand free he reached down to take his friend's, letting their fingers tangle together. "But that's part of what makes me so fun to hang out with, isn't it? Gets you out of your comfort zone a little and gets us both into seeing and doing new things." At least on the civilian side of it. He was still very much the least adventurous of the two of them when it came to the other part of their lives.

"It does mean I'm not constantly hiding at home, yes." He nodded slightly, cheeks flushing slightly as their fingers laced together. Afton didn't usually do things like that when they were in public, not that he was complaining. It was a bit odd but it did feel good given they were starting to get into a more crowded space. "Do you think if we ask nicely they'll let us stop at the top for a minute?" He wanted to be able to really enjoy the view and wasn't sure the wheel was going slow enough to do it on it's own.
