Isabelle sniffled, a blanket around her shoulders as she trudged towards the cafeteria. She was going to see if she could get some ice cream from one of the workers back there. Maybe she'd get some kind of pastry while she was at it. It was only at her roommates suggestion that she'd left the dorms. The brief glimpses of nightmares she'd passed had been surprised looks, but nobody had called out to her or stopped her. Maybe she ought to just go home. A half-hearted sob escaped her and she stifled it with her hand.
Just had to get to the cafeteria, get her food, and come back. Her friend insisted she'd feel better after she'd had something. They'd trailed along for half the trek there, but then remembered they hadn't put up their familiars and had had to go back. Considering how many things the pesky vespercat got into while they were in the room, leaving them alone wasn't a risk either of them wanted to take. The other nixie hadn't wanted to leave her be, but she'd insisted that she'd be fine for the rest of the trip. It didn't matter that her eyes kept watering and she couldn't stop her occasional sniffles.

Sylkie pouted as she walked down the hallway to the cafeteria. She’d been here for almost a year now but still hadn’t managed to make friends that weren’t freshlings. The littles were nice and all but she couldn’t exactly talk about her crush on Thorium with them. He was so hot. But she was pretty sure she was invisible to him. Sylkie sighed and kept moving, head down as she fiddled with a setting on her camera. Sylkie didn’t even notice the other nightmare wrapped in a blanket. She stepped on the tail of the blanket as it dragged forward and with a screech she started to slip. Her arms windmilled in an effort to stop her momentum to no help, falling backwards and smacking her head on the floor. At the last second she tucked her arms around her camera to protect it. She’d never be able to replace the expensive piece of equipment on her own and her parents would yell at her for not being careful with it. “ Excuse me but you shouldn’t be dragging a blanket around, it’s a hazard!” She yelled from her prone position on the floor once she got her bearings back. Feeling a sudden tug on her blanket, Isabelle frowned and pulled it forward as it was jerked back. As far as she knew, she hadn't stepped on anything so what had it gotten caught on-- Oh! That thump sounded awfully familiar. The fact that she'd heard the sound of someone hitting the floor often enough that it was familiar was a strange thing to realize and for a brief moment her grief was set aside while her face scrunched up. Why was that a familiar sound?
The accusatory words, yelled at her from the ground behind her, brought her back into the moment and fresh tears welled in her eyes. She hadn't thought it was that long and she hadn't expected anyone to be that close and she just wanted to get something to snack on. Why had she let her friend convince her that going out was a good thing? She should have just left her alone in their room!
"I-I'm sorry! I-I should have just stayed in my dooorrmmm," Isabelle choked on her apology, clutching her blanket closer to her and shifting it out from under whoever she'd tripped. It only occurred to her that she should have helped the bakeneko up only after she was already up and then it was too late and she couldn't handle being yelled at for anything else. Not to mention she'd forgotten to put on any lotion before she left her room and she could already feel herself drying out, especially with all the crying.

Sylkie stared at the nixie as they basically started to bawl. Well that was...embarrassing. She hadn’t ment to cause tears, just give a warning to keep track of the blanket end. She slowly dusted her dress off and checked to make sure her camera was fine. “ Look, it’s ok. You just need to make sure you’re not dragging it behind you, alright? Someone else could have really gotten hurt. And please don’t be upset that you left your dorm! It’s a nice day today, lots of nice sunshine! Enjoy it!” Sylkie held her hand out for a handshake but with how hard they were clutching at their blanket, she wasn’t sure they’d be able to let go long enough to shake her hand. “ My name is Sylkie Von. What’s yours?” She might only get a name out of them, but at least then she’d be able to call the something besides ‘that nixie’. She was curious as to why they were wandering the hall to the cafeteria wrapped in a blanket, especially after they said they shouldn’t have left their dorm. All of Sylkie’s thoughts about Thorium temporarily suspended as her curiosity centered on this mysterious and weepy nightmare. (Wc: 199)

Gulping for breath, Isabelle rubbed at her eyes. Blearily she could see the her messing with a camera and fresh tears welled up. It would be just her luck that she'd end up accidentally breaking someone else's camera and then they'd send her home because she couldn't afford to replace it or get it looked at or anything. Sniffling, she just shook her head. It was a horrid day. Nothing was going right.
It almost hurt, letting go of the blanket long enough to give Sylkie a rough sort of handshake. It was more her gripping her fingers for a moment and then withdrawing back into the blanket tent than an actual handshake. If she hadn't been in such a dismal mood, she likely would have been dismayed at her behavior. "I-Isabelle," she said. Sniffling again and rubbing at her face, she tried to get herself under control. "I'm just. . ." ---hic--- "going to the cafeteria for some sweets and then I'm going to hole up in my dorm until the walls fall down around me." Maybe it was a bit dramatic, but that was the mood she'd gotten herself into and there was no consoling her.

Sylkie stared at the weeping nixie for a few moments before acting upon her instinct. She darted forward and hugged Isabelle tightly. “ Don’t cry. Please. I’m fine, my stuff is fine. I just don’t want anybody else to get hurt. Let’s go get you something sweet from the cafeteria and head to your dorm after, ok?” She gently patted Isabelle on the back, some ‘there there it’ll be alright’ pats, just like what she used to get from her twin whenever she was upset. “ If it’s not too forward of me, why are you so sad? Did something bad happen to you?” Sylkie started pulling the nixie forwards with her, slowly heading towards their destination. She hoped Isabelle would start talking as they progressed down the hallway, but who knew if she’d be able to calm down enough for the crying to subside. (Wc: 143)

Isabelle choked on another sob as Sylkie lunged forward. The hug was the most unexpected thing and she flinched back a bit before relaxing. "I-I'm sorry. I'm not normally like this, I swear! I swear I'm not," she couldn't help but apologize. Oh this was going to be embarrassing later. She should have just waited for her roommate to catch up with her, or just stayed in the dorm instead. That said, the gentle pats the bakeneko was giving her soothed her enough that she quit sobbing.
Sniffling again, and rubbing her eyes of the last round of tears, Isabelle turned and followed Sylkie's lead to the cafeteria. At the very least there didn't appear to be anyone else in the hallway right now to witness this mess. "No, I just. I just. . .I want to be a journalist, right? And to be a good journalist, you have to have some experience with writing, yeah?" Isabelle was taking a creative writing class to help with that bit.
"Well I've tried. . I've tried to interview so many nightmares and daydreams. Mostly the ones that come from races that decided to join the rest of the world. And. And none of them would even give me the time of day!" Isabelle sniffled again, voice rising in indignation. "I just want to talk about where they come from and what sort of lives they're living, and and and how they like the rest of the world so I can write a good article to submit to the newspaper. But it's useless! I'll never get an interview and the newspapers will laugh at me and I'll have to go live out in a cabin in the woods farming mushrooms to make a living!" This brought on a fresh slew of tears sliding down her cheeks.

Sylkie tilted her head, considering Isabelle’s problem with interviews. She tapped a claw on her lower lip in thought as they continued towards the cafeteria. She just couldn’t seem to remember which races had recently rejoined the population. “ Which races were you wanting to interview the most? Maybe I can help you out.” She babysat in her spare time and might be able to ask a parent or two if they’d be willing to do an interview with someone she knew who was interested in journalism. It never hurt to ask, after all. “ Let’s check out the dessert bar! I think I see some jello, some cake, umm cookies, ice cream and chocolate covered strawberries today! Mmm yummy!” Sylkie bounced excitedly, her tail swishing around enthusiastically as she dragged Isabelle forward by an edge of the blanket. She was salivating as she stared at the strawberries and a piece of cheesecake. She’d eaten something a bit ago but there was always room for dessert. She hoped Isabelle would find something yummy at the dessert bar to cheer her up, at least a little bit. (Wc: 184)

Just as she'd thought, Sylkie didn't have anything positive to say about her dilemma. Isabelle should just give up on her--she blinked a few times, her mind catching up to what the bakeneko had said. She'd. . help her out? Isabelle couldn't help but sniffle a bit at that. That was awfully nice of her, especially since she'd tripped over her blanket earlier. Swallowing dryly, she took a few seconds to think about exactly which races she'd been wanting to interview.
"Well. . .almost all of them? The grimms from the tribe that came to visit the school had contact with us already, so I don't really need one of them. But the, uh, the dolls and slaugh and naga and all of the races that are native to above and. . .and bakeneko." Isabelle's train of thought was nearly derailed when she realized that she was talking with a bakeneko right here and now. She could ask her for one!
Opening her mouth to start the question she was interrupted by their arrival to the dessert bar. Even though she was feeling marginally better, a scoop or twelve of ice cream and a small piece of cake would do wonders for her. Wiping her face once more to make sure she didn't look like an utter disgrace, Isabelle let Sylkie tug her along, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
"I-I'll get some ice cream and we can head back to my room?" She suggested, not quite holding her breath for Sylkie's answer as she went to grab a bowl and start loading it up.
