He had been on the phone all morning.

Had sold some paper.

He'd reorganized the top of his desk, cleaned out all three of his drawers and it was still only four o'clock.

He had made the journey from his desk to the water station and back to his desk more times than he could accurately recount. Which meant that it was at least six - and he wasn't always going for the water.

The water station was right by the receptionist's desk, which was right by Jeremy's desk. Jeremy as married with a baby on the way, but he still made Dorian's heart flutter. Had made Dorian's heart flutter since the day he started work at Dunder Mifflin Destiny City.

"Oh, Jack," Jeremy was saying to their receptionist on Dorian's seventh trip to the water station. "You're into photography, right?"

Absolutely aware of Dorian's presence lingering at hr desk, Jack was doing her best to continue her book keeping duties despite that. It was harder than it seemed like it should be. Not because Jack was bad at her job, but because Dorian was quite possibly her favorite person in the office, and it was easy to get sucked into conversations with him and lose track of time. Best to get done what she could before he distracted her again.

Although, she supposed, it wasn't as if Mark really cared that much. He was a distraction in his own right.

Bright eyes flicked up to eye their boss through the blinds on the windows that made up Mark's office, lips twitching as she watched him hold his phone up and make a face at the camera. Snap chat, she suspected.

"Hmm?" Dorian's voice drew her back to him, and she tucked a curl behind her ear as she turned to look up at him. "Yes. Why, what's up?"

Dorian's eyebrows rose when Jack turned to address him. He shook his head at her, sipping from his paper cup, lifting a finger to indicate that it was Jeremy who'd asked after her photography hobby, not him - but he lingered for conversation anyway. Because he liked talking to Jack, but also because he was curious about most things that had to do with Jeremy.

"Have you ever shot maternity photos before?" Jeremy continued, smiling from his desk. "Alice and I are in the market for a photographer."

Dorian made a face behind his paper cup, as if the water had gone sour.

"Whose idea do you think this was?" Dorian said to nobody in particular, holding up his paper cup, heart twanging in his chest, "to turn paper into a drinking cup? We're a paper company. Why don't we make cups?"

Oh. Whoops. Jack gave Dorian an apologetic smile before looking up at Jeremy. "Sorry, yes I am." It was always a little hit or miss when people asked about her photography. Sometimes they were just being nice, trying to show interest in something she was passionate about. Sometimes they wanted to hire her, and that was just the best because it meant she got to add to her portfolio as well as add a bit of extra cash to her pockets.

Sometimes people didn't really care, and just brought it up randomly.

She was pleased to see Jeremy was in the second category, and her smile brightened even if she caught the sour look that crossed Dorian's face. He liked Jeremy, it was obvious.

"I have, yes! One of my cousins was pregnant last year and I did a shoot with her as a gift."

Then, back to Dorian. "Do you really want to try to sell paper cups over the phone?"

"Er - no." He smiled at Jack, who had a point. It was hard enough to sell paper over the phone, and paper cups were bad for the environment on top of that - and he was sure that paper was too, now that he thought about it. Dorian made a mental note to start bringing a water bottle to work.

"Great!" Jeremy was saying to Jack, "do you have a portfolio or something I could look at? Alice and I are -

"Hey Jack," Dorian cut across Jeremy as though he wasn't there at all. He stared hard at the receptionist, a flush rising to his cheeks. "Are you busy this weekend?"

He threw his paper cup in the trash.

She grinned back up at Dorian before looking back at Jeremy as he asked...well, tried to ask about a portfolio before Dorian interrupted him, cheeks flushed. It earner him a perplexed look from the receptionist before an equally pink hue warmed her own cheeks at his quester.

"Er, nothing. I don't have any plans this weekend." She'd been hoping maybe he'd ask her out at some point, but had still never really expected it. It caught her off guard. Honestly, it probably still would have if she had thought he had any inclination for a date with her.

"Why, did you wanna do something?" It'd been impossible not blurt the question out, and the blush darkened. Jack dropped her gave, rummaging around her desk top until she found one of the business cards she'd had printed up with a link to her online portfolio on it along with name and cellphone number. With an apologetic smile she offered it up to Jeremy."

Dorian was happy for Jeremy. Really. He was a sweet person and a good friend, and Dorian knew that he would be a good father too. It was just hard. Something he needed to deal with on his own.

Probably he should not have asked Jack out.

Probably he should seek counselling. Talk to someone -a professional- who could help him sort himself out, without any of the extra baggage that came with his usual preferred method of coping; the hangovers, the bruises, impromptu trips to the doctor's office...

"Yeah," he said, smiling at Jack as Jeremy took her business card. "I missed taking you out for your birthday. I want to make it up to you."

As Jeremy took her card and headed back to his desk Jack gave him a bright smile and a little wave before mouthing that he should call her set something up.

Then her attention was all for Dorian. She folded her arms on her desk, leaning closer to the man as he mentioned missing her birthday and wanting to make up for it. It was something they'd discussed a bit before, going out for her birthday, but it'd come and gone with no plans being made. A bit of a disappointment, but Jack was a very forgiving person and Dorian was, well...she did like him.

"What were you thinking?" If he wanted to make up for it and take her out now that sounded just fine by her.

And if the timing seemed convenient, if she suspected at all that Dorian's intentions in asking were anything less than honest interest in her, she didn't let on.

Was she old enough to go to the bar?

Dorian thought he remembered that the last time they'd discussed age, Jack was on the cusp of being old enough to bar hop, but he had also been in the middle of a hangover for this conversation and his recollection was worse than foggy.

"I'll take you out for a drink? And some dancing. My treat."

He knew a great country bar for two-stepping. If Jack was not opposed, he thought he could teach her. If she already knew how, even better.

Jeremy walked away and it was not just Jack and Dorian at her desk and he was looking down at her with that smile she found so very charming and asking her if she wanted to go drinking and dancing. With him."

And of course she wanted to. She'd wanted to go out with Dorian from almost the moment she'd started as receptionist, and he'd wandered over to her desk to warn her about their boss and give her the low down on all the other employees she would be working with. It'd been kind of him, but on top of that he had a great sense of humor and just seemed so fun to be around. He was her best friend in the office.

It made it all just a little surreal, but she still nodded as she lifted a hand to tuck a curl behind her ear, smiling up at him. "Sure, that sounds great.

"Should I meet you somewhere, or do you want to pick me up?"
