It'd only been two days since Chase Black had given Axton his audition project for Renegade Media, and already the blonde had a list of ideas scribbled down on a spiral bond notebook he had tucked into the back pocket of jeans that were worn thin and pale to the point there were rips fraying at the knees. Perfect was an early summer evening.

He was meeting Rory at the coffee shop she worked at part time, the one owed by the man he was trying to get a job with. He'd offered to walk her home after a particularly late shift in exchange for her feedback on the ideas he'd come up with already.

If he could narrow it down to three of four he'd be able to hammer out the details for them. That was the minimum he thought the CEO would accept, but if there was time after those had been finished he'd try to add on another.

It was, as expected, a lot of work, but it was a least familiar work.

Ten minutes to close he let himself into the coffee shop, ordered an iced chai latte, and then took a seat to wait for his young friend.

Rory preferred to open or early shifts where she got off in the afternoon, before the evening rush hit for a few reasons. Mostly, it was because her boyfriend worked a pleasant 'adult' eight hour work day that usually ended by 6. Getting off before or close to his time was her preference because it meant that they could do dinner together.

Still, the late night shifts didn't bother her on the occasion that they happened because it let her see a different side of the world and closing was a necessity at times.

Besides, tonight she had Axton visiting and walking her home, which she knew Akio would appreciate even if he would have prefered to be the one who did it. But, her boyfriend could deal without seeing her for one night (minus the visit near the beginning of her shift before she shooed him away because he was distracting).

As the night wound down her friend had taken a seat and she'd brought him out his drink. "There's an extra girl tonight so once we're closed, I can go."

As had stretched out in one of the plush arm chairs against the wall, his legs stretched out in front of him and crossed at the ankles, and his hands folded on his stomach. He looked up as her noticed someone heading his way and an easy smile pulled at his lips as he realized it was Rory bringing him his drink. "Thanks, sweetheart."

He sat up a little to accept it, drawing a leg up to cross his ankle over his knee as he took a long, appreciative drink, silver eyes on his friend. "Oh that's nice." He knew she preferred early shifts, and while this wasn't exactly early anymore she'd probably still have time to give that boyfriend of her's a call before he went to bed. "Lucky break."

The smile brightened into a grin. "I'm not going anywhere though, so don't feel like you have to rush on my account." He'd been expecting it to take anywhere from forty minutes to an hour, so what was fifteen minutes to that? Nothing.

Rory wasn't someone who was comfortable making people wait too long for her, so Axton's reassurances were welcomed and she offered him a weak smile. "Oh yeah, definitely," she agreed, resisting the urge to toy with the braid that fell across her shoulder.

"I don't mind closing," she felt the need to say, "but it's nice when I don't have to close-close." The words came out a little rushed and Rory felt herself flush, head shaking in a poor attempt to hide it.

"Yeah, right." She forced herself to take a few breaths and when she smiled this time, it was brighter, more genuine. "But let me know if you need anything alright?" With that Rory turned on her heel to get back to the pre-closing work that still needed to be done, between customers of course.

True to his word, Ax was content to just sit back and relax as he waited, shopping at his drink and browsing through his phone. It really didn't feel like he'd been sitting there all that long before he watched one of the girls walk out from behind the counter to lock the door. Which meant Rory should be coming out any moment.

Sitting up, he stared his phone again, glancing back towards the counter and the two girls he could see behind it—one his friend, one the other closer, he assumed. After a quick conversation Rory was saying goodbye and heading towards him and Ax got to his feet again, finishing off the last of his tea so he could throw the cup away.

"Ready?" He'd hold the door for her as he reached it, smiling down at her.

Her messenger bag was slung over her shoulder as she approached Axtion and Rory pushed the lose wisps of turquoise behind her ears. "Yeah," she answered, accompanied by a head nod.

Stepping out ahead of him was easy enough, but she waited until he had fallen in step beside her, hand automatically reaching for his. Rory was a hand-holder when it came to her important people and something about the night had left her a little anxious, though she couldn't put her finger on why.

"How was your drink?" She asked, if only to fill the air with easy chatter in hopes that it would settle her nerves.

Somewhere, a bird cawed and Rory's head lifted, jade eyes searching the sky before she shook her head and tried to focus on her companion.

His palm turned as he felt her fingers against it, making it easier for her to take his hand. Ax wasn't routinely as touchy feely as his young friend, but he could never really help but indulge her whims. If she wanted to hold hands that was fine by him/ Whatever made her happy.

"It was perfectly refreshing. Did you make it?" He'd had them before that were too sweet, or didn't quite taste right, but this one had been spot on.

He heard the crow as well somewhere off in the night, and it had him glancing up curiously, before bringing his attention back to the young lady at his side. "How'd did work go?"

There was a comfort in holding hands. It meant that Axton wouldn't run off without her. It meant that he was solidly beside her in an manner she could feel. Mostly it meant that he wasn't going to disappear on her or leave her alone.

She knew it was an unfair worry with Axton, but she couldn't help herself and was grateful that he was willing to indulge.

"I did!" Rory chirped, seeming to visibly brighten. "I knew it was for you so..." she trailed off with a shrug, cheeks flush with a hint of pride. She did her best to provide a quality drink for every patron but she did put in a little extra effort for the people close to her heart, Axton included.

"Work was---" She started to answer only to be interrupted by a loud cawing sound coupled with the sound of various...wings flapping.

Panic welled in Rory's chest, the girl whipping around to come nearly face to face with the too large bird with red eyes. All three pairs were staring at her with consideration before the head turned to an impossible angle.

"And what's the girl doing with a scrap like that?" The bird asked, heavy body hitting the pavement with a thunk.

Panicked, Rory squeaked her companions name. "Axton!"

He gave her a pleased smile, clearly happy that she'd paid that little bit of extra attention for him. It wasn't as if he wasn't aware of how much the young lady cared about him, he knew, but the reminders were still always nice. "I'll have to make sure you're there when I come in so you can always make it."

Another loud caw pulled his attention off Rory and out into the night. Wings, more than a single pair and a lot larger that than of a normal sized bird. Ax slowed to a stop, hand in Rory's tugging gently to pull her back to him, but she was already turning, daring him with her, and pale eyes widened as he came face to face with something that looked like it'd crawled right out of a nightmare.

And it ******** spoke!

His name jerked him into action. He turned, hand tightening on Rory's as he started the both of them running in the opposite direction. Youma. At the first ******** possible time, too! "s**t! Run Rory!"

Despite what he was saying Rory couldn't make herself run or leave him. She was torn on what she should do if only because she recognized the youma and knew that it might follow and...

How did one get away from something that large without the aid of teleportation?

Besides, she couldn't leave Axton alone. "I'm not leaving you," she said, hurried and tugging on their joined hands.

The youma seemed to laugh, the sound echoing out of his beak when it opened even if it didn't move. "What's the girl afraid of? A boy who cannot protect or the thing that comes that cannot be stopped?" Koschei's head twisted again reverting to a more 'natural' seeming position, six eyes blinking in a shuttering succession so that at least one eye was on the pair at all times.

"And what of you, a bit of a street rat? What do you have to offer to the man that's leaped down the rabbit hole again and again?" This time when Koschei laughed, the beak moved like it was chattering.

"Axton," Rory said more insistently, pulling on him in an attempt to get them moving. "It's not--"

Koschei hopped forward and the four wings spread open and out seemed to come dozens of birds that quickly circled the pair, squawking and crowding them.

Quote:
Koschei's Flock: Koschei spreads his wings and caws loudly, summoning a flock of shadow birds that attack his intended target. They are used to surround and disorient the target to keep them in place. The flock doesn't physically attack unless the target tries to break out and then the flock uses their beaks and talons to lash out.

They needed to leave. At the very least Rory did, because Action wasn't a hundred percent certain he could protect her from this. If it was going to end badly, he didn't want her caught up in that, or seeing it. So when she pulled his feet moved, but the minsyerouz bird was still talking. Cryptic, at least to his ears. It it was making coherent points, they were going right over the blonde's head.

He pushed her forward, away from the spread of too many dark wings, and started to run after her as what ever she'd been about to say cut short.

But now there were more wings behind them. Hundreds of them filling the air with the sound of frantic beating and menacing cries. "s**t!". They weren't going to outrun this, not as they were.

Gritting his teeth he summoned his snowball and all that came with it. Not Axton now, but a page of Mercury. It made him stronger, faster and he used that now to scoop the young lady up off her feet so he could take off at a sprint down the sidewalk away from the flury of angry birds with their catching claws and slicing beaks. "Hold on Rory, we're getting out of here!"

It wasn't until the birds subsided that Rory was able to pay attention to anything outside of the sound of her heart in her ears. She wasn't hurt, the birds did nothing but try and keep them locked so that their master could hop even closer, his oppressive shadow falling across both of them as he cawed gleefully.

"Axton?" Rory called, looking around bewildered because she couldn't find him--

But...there was someone. No. It couldn't have been?

She felt her heart stop, feet scrambling backwards as she took in the appearance of the man who stood where her friend was supposed to be standing. Her hand pressed over her mouth to contain her gasp that nearly melded into a sob.

He was one of the moonies.

No, no, no.

She didn't even have time to process things as he scooped her up and took off running. "You're not...you can't be."

She didn't want to believe it.

Annoyed with their attempts at escaping, Koschei took to the sky.

Whoops, he'd given her quite a shock. "Sorry I didn't tell you," he managed to pant out as he ran, offering down an apologetic smile. But of course he didn't know why her eyes misted or her features looked so stricken. He'd blame it on the birds swarming around them and the monstrous youma taking flight at their backs.

He still had the snowball in one hand, and more to get rid of it than in belief it'd actually do any good he threw it back over his shoulder at the six eyed creature.

"We gotta get inside somewhere," he mused aloud as he slid around the corner with her petite frame held tight to his chest. If they could get to a subway they could probably at least escape the big youma, but the birds it had summoned wouldn't really be slowed down much. Still Baikal favored his chances against the flock rather than the creator.

He hadn't been to this part of town all that often yet and he wasn't familiar where all the public transit points rested. "Where's the nearest subway, Rory?"

"I-- But--" Rory shook her head, too many thoughts bouncing around in her head as she struggled to peer over his shoulder to watch the bird that was circling above them. She had no idea what to do or how to process this.

Finding out one of your closest companions was working for the other side...

That wasn't something they had taught her how to be prepared for.

Behind them, there was an indignant squawk and the sound of a splat with the snow ball landing squarely on Koschei's face right when he dove, which caused him to jerk unexpectedly and crash into the ground.

Rory watched the youma fall, her brows furrowed before she looked up at the face she did-but-didn't recognize. "I---" She couldn't think, too much information had been thrown at her and all she could think was I wish I didn't know what you are.

Squeezing her eyes shut she tried to make herself focus, they were in danger and since he revealed himself to her she couldn't turn around and do the same.

"T-take a left down the next street, there should be an entrance between the two buildings."

Had he not been sprinting for safety with the sound of birds filling his ears the hesitance and obvious emotional strain in Rory's voice would have certainly caught his attention by now, but he didn't have the extra focus to spare just that moment. What he did hear, the soft breaks in that sweet voice, he took for fear.

At the corner he took a sharp left, racing with everything he had for the arched entrance to the subway. The snowball had slowed the monstrous bird, but it'd likely also pissed it off.

He had to slow as he hit the stairs, conscious of the girl in his arms. Falling now would have been disastrous. "Just hold on Rory, we're almost home free."

Except now he wasn't so sure of that. It'd seemed like such a solid plan, but the entry way to the underground was a lot wider than he'd anticipated. The low ceiling would likely slow the youma down, but if it wanted to catch them it'd scramble after them.

Please let there be a train in the station.
