Kat hadn’t been happy in months.

She hadn’t really…done much of anything in months. And the worst part was that nobody even really seemed to care that much. Her mother was so busy with Esfir that the oldest daughter who had moved out and lived alone didn’t much matter and…

And she didn’t care either.

It had been far too long since she had seen Mags…and honestly? Being without her best friend had made life…kind of awful.

But today, Kat decided she was going to do something. Do something and…and try to fix this.

She dressed herself in something more substantial than pajamas and brushed her hair, braiding it up, seeming almost surprised that it had grown so much…but…she couldn’t remember the last time she had cut it so she supposed it made sense.

Determined now, Kat made her way to the horrible…filthy establishment of Waffle House and just hoped that Mags was working today.

Her fingers were crossed when she walked in, and when she saw the pile of curly blonde hair, Kat felt her stomach twist in that old familiar way. She knew that it wasn’t indigestion anymore but…

But there was nothing that could be done about it. Nothing but taking a seat at the counter, and hoping Mags noticed her soon.

Meanwhile, Mags had been working herself to the bone in an attempt to make ends meet when it came to paying the rent and what other meager bills she managed to accrue every month.

Ever since IHOP announced their name change (the fiends) to IHOB, traffic had been slower at "the House" because everyone was clamoring to see how wonderful (or rather, awful) the burgers at the new International House of Burgers were. Less customers meant fewer tips, fewer tips on top of the handful of dollars she made every hour meant scraping coins together to afford paying her Wal-Mart cell phone, her rent and the groceries she managed to get every other week.

Today didn't seem like it was going to be much better. She had four tables over the course of an hour and only one of them had managed to tip anything worth more than a few cents (keep the change - ha) so the day was starting to look bleak.

.... that is, until she saw a familiar face as she swept by with a bin to bus her latest departing customers.

"Kat?"

What in tarnation was she doing there? She hated Waffle House! At the same time, though... god, how long had it been since she'd seen her???

The bin was abandoned on top of the dirty table as grimy hands wiped themselves on her half-apron. Worn out sneakers took her over to the table where she promptly slapped both hands, palms down, onto the other girl's table.

"Gal, where in the heck have you been??? And what the heck are you doin' here??"

Kat glanced up, a little startled at the greeting, but she couldn’t stop the wide smile that crossed her face. “Mags.” She couldn’t help herself and quickly scooted off of her seat, flinging her arms around her friend and hugging her tightly for what almost felt like too long of a time.

“I missed you. Terribly.” The words were quiet, almost bitter, and the hug continued for another moment, until Kat pulled away, running her fingers through her bangs to get them out of her face.

“I missed you enough to brave soggy waffles here. It is worth it because of you. Now. Will you give me a waffle so I may be disgusted. Thank you.” The grin on her face was somewhat wicked, and she felt at least three hundred times better for seeing Mags. She felt good enough to tease…and good enough to risk her health on one of the floppy abominations that this place considered food.

Quietly though, Kat sat back down, tugging on Mags’ hand. “…We can’t wait so long again. I missed you.”

Thank goodness the place was empty…though. She honestly wondered how it ever managed to remain open to begin with.

The hug caught the blonde waitress completely off guard but Margaret Butler rebounded like the best of them. It didn't matter that she'd been sweating all morning and probably smelled like a combination of dishwater and grease, long arms came around the visiting girl and embraced her in a bear hug that would put even bears to shame.

The quiet admission was met with a grin, Mags mimicking her friend by shoving the obnoxiously curly curls from out of her own face, sloppily tucked behind her ears. Kat was funny - when wasn't she hilarious? - and her comment about braving waffles just to be disgusted soon had the older girl practically braying like a donkey as she squeezed the customer-but-not-a-customer's hand a little tighter.

"Course Ah will. In fact, think it's time for a break - we can share 'em and be disgusted together!"

Without remembering to ask what the other girl wanted to drink (for being excited about waffles tended to distract the poor blonde), Mags spun on her heels and clomped her way quickly into the back of the kitchen before her friend had time to change her mind.

Kat didn’t want the hug to end, no matter how Mags smelled and no matter how gross this place was in general…this made it all worthwhile. When the hug was broken, she gave a soft sigh, though was almost glad that the blonde had walked away, it made things a little easier to process for a moment, and as she sat down, she couldn’t keep the smile off of her face.

She was going to have waffles. And they were going to be terrible…but they were going to still…be.

Quietly, Kat sat back down, fiddling with the plastic menu and making a face as her arm landed in something that was sticky.

Oh this place…was revolting. But Mags was worth it and perhaps…

Perhaps she would have to tell her that today. “Mags? You are cooking the waffles?” Obviously she was, she wouldn’t have gone into the kitchen if she hadn’t been planning on it. For a moment she watched the girl, eyes on the bouncing blonde curls and then as her throat seemed suddenly dry she cleared it. “Is there chocolate milk?”

Eyes gave the other girl a confused look when Kat made her inquiry. Her, make the...

"Oh lord, no!" She laughed at the thought, the sound loud and far from melodious. Margaret Butler knew she didn't laugh like the other dainty girls she'd attended school with at Crystal but a laugh was a laugh - even if it might've hurt a few ears, right? "Bubba in the back is doin' the cookin' today. It's better this way - he'll make 'em just right, you'll see. Nice 'n greasy."

The blonde was in the process of sliding into the booth across from the other girl when her best friend made a request for a drink.

..... aw, hell!

"Sorry, guess Ah got so excited to see you that my manners got misplaced."

She offered her a sheepish grin before worn out sneakers clomped their way back towards the back, soon returning with two full glasses of brown liquid. One slid its way in front of Kat while the other made its way towards the waitress's lips, leaving a small yet noticeable milk mustache on the tall girl's upper lip.

"Figured Ah'd take my break so we can chow down together. What in the world have you been up to??? Ah wanna hear everythin' you have to tell!"

Kat nodded, pleased that she would have time to spend with Mags, though the thought of…the greasy waffle made her stomach churn. But. Such was the price of friendship sometimes.

Golden eyes watched the blonde take a drink of her milk and for a moment, it took everything Kat had not to just stare at the milk mustache, and due to the proximity, the blonde’s lips. She didn’t laugh, though that seemed as though it would have been a viable option to, but rather fought for a moment with the small paper napkin in the always too tight napkin holder and held it out to Mags, nodding at her face.

“Milk.”

Pausing, she offered a smile. “Thank you. I’m glad that the…ah…” Kat made a face and sighed. “I am glad the waffles will be as…greasy as I…ah…expected.”

She thought for a long moment about the last question. What had she even been up to? Not much really, just living. She hadn’t been patrolling, hadn’t been bothering with much really.

Finally, the girl shrugged. “Not much. Just living. Missing you.” She never had been much for words but…that seemed to at least say what she wanted.

She watched the other girl with curiosity as she wrestled with the metal, dinged up napkin dispenser until Kat had freed one of the cheap, white slips of paper. Their waffles hadn't come out yet, why was she....

Eyebrows rose as the napkin was offered to her, Mags staring at the hand like it held a puzzle in it. It took a few moments for her to grasp the subtle, quiet gesture on the more sophisticated girl's part but when she did, Mags had enough sense to grin sheepishly as the napkin was plucked, then smeared across her mouth to collect the milky residue. Whoops!

"Ah've missed you too, Kat." It made sense that they missed each other - especially since they literally continued to miss seeing one another. Mags knew she was killing what little social life she'd clung to with all of the extra shifts she'd been picking up but money was tight and tips were low. What else was a girl supposed to do to survive? Being a senshi didn't pay no bills!

"We should have a day out, you 'n me. Maybe go to the park or catch a movie or somethin'?"

Granted, it'd have to be at the old two dollar theater - their flicks tended to be several months behind all of the other spots but you couldn't beat the price, in the blonde's opinion.

A small bell chimed in the background, Mags nearly bolting from her seat as she headed back towards the kitchen. "That'd be the waffles - be right back in a jiff!!!"

Giving a small smile, Kat watched as the milk mustache was finally vanquished. Her heart thrilled to hear that Mags had missed her as well, and she could do nothing but nod at the suggestion of having a day together. Not that they weren’t already having one… but…going to the park and catching a movie sounded nice. She rested her elbows on the table and nodded to herself. Yes. This was a good idea and yes she wanted to do it.

“I think I’d like that. Tell me when.” She could figure something out. Something nice. Or, perhaps at one point they could go to the ice skating rink…she missed gliding across the ice…and the thought of Mags on skates…well. It brought a slow grin across her face, though it faded when suddenly Mags jumped up. Slowly, Kat nodded and watched as Mags darted off to the back to bring the nasty, soggy poor excuses for waffles out to the table.

It was worth eating them though…if she got to eat them with a friend…that made it…worth it. She hoped.

Quietly she sat back in the booth and waited for the blow to fall.

The plates were fetched, the freshest waffles stacked high and proud on each ordinary, run of the mill Waffle House dish. There was a chip on one - it happened with some of them, sometimes - so she placed the defective plate in front of her own spot while choosing to give the more pristine, more pretty lookin' plate in front of her best friend.

"Ah'm free......"

It took her a moment to rejoin the conversation, eyebrows furrowing as she moved to unwrap the cheap silverware set laying out in front of her. Her schedule was always screwy, times changing every day on every week so keepin' up with it was like trying to.... well, it was confusing, at the very least.

"Pretty sure Ah've got nothin' on Thursday, if you're available then. If not, I think Sunday afternoon could work, Ah only got a morning shift that day."

She had no idea what movies were even out but any movie would be a better movie if a friend went along for the ride.

Syrup was doused across the waffles, a flood of dark amber soon waterfalling over the side of the stack of fluffy morsels. She was kind enough to make sure to save some for her bestie, should she want the standard maple flavorin' on hers too.

She wasn't uncouth or nothin'.

"Didja have one in mind, maybe?"

Kat was trying to prepare herself for eating these monstrosities, but when Mags said that she was free, and that she wanted to go to the movies, the sherbet haired girl gave a pleased grin. “I don’t have one in my mind. No,” Kat admitted, her golden eyes watching the seemingly never ending river of syrup that Mags was pouring over her waffles.

…It made sense though. Something should be done to make these overlimp disks taste like…something. And pure corn syrup seemed the way to go, at least here.

“I will look and pick something good. You got us a lot of waffles.” Kat murmured, finally tearing her eyes away from Mag’s syrup adventure and examining her small container full of what seemed to be butter.

“...Must like you a lot to eat such things…” She muttered, spreading the butter over her waffles and then flopping the one beneath on top, hoping the residual heat would cause the…the whatever it was to melt.

Finally she glanced up at the girl. “…is there jam?”

Perhaps if she smothered the waffles in strawberry…they would be a bit more palatable.

She overheard the muttering and offered the girl a slightly sympathetic look. While she knew Kat wasn't a fan of the greasy, cheap food of Waffle House as opposed to the culinary delights she cooked up at home, the fact the gal was willing to come out and eat in the slums with the blonde warmed Mags' heart up something fierce.

She opened her mouth to say something, when the other girl's request had her mouth clapping shut. Oh, crap!

"Yeah, of course!" Sliding out of the booth, blonde curls bounced as she shook her noggin. "Where the heck is my head - sorry 'bout that - be back in a jiff!"

It took approximately forty-two seconds for her to return, hands clenched around a mountain of small, white looking objects. By the time she returned to the table, dozens upon dozens of small, plastic packets of various flavored jelly came tumbling down onto the plastic counter.

"Take yer pick! We've got a load in the back - nobody ever thinks to ask for 'em, so help yourself!!!"

She was clearly very proud of the small hoard she'd supplied her best friend with, flopping down back into her side of the table before shoveling a huge bite of waffle into her open mouth.

Kat’s eyes widened at the sheer amount of jam and jelly the girl provided, and after taking some time to sort out the grape flavored packets, she opened half a dozen of the strawberry, and even had the fortune to find a stray blackberry hiding in the bunch. It must have been a mistake—a shipping error or something, but she wasn’t going to waste it.

When her waffles were glistening with the fruit flavored mess, she took a bite and relaxed, nodding slowly.

“They are not bad...not inedible…with the jam. Thank you.”

She fell quiet then, eating the waffles slowly, an actually managing to make it through almost half of the mountain in front of her before putting her fork and knife down in defeat. “I can do no more. I am conquered.”

Idly, she reached for her wallet and drew out a sleek credit card. “I will pay, Mags, yes?”

While Kat took her time and ate like the graceful person Mags knew her to be, the blonde garbage disposal of a human being was busy shoveling her share right into her open mouth. It lacked grace, it lacked manners, it lacked everything that Margaret Butler should have been taught in her short time at Crystal Academy.

Alas, education was never Mags's strongest suit and she simply enjoyed her waffles in such a way that the world was unfortunately made very aware of how much she enjoyed them by her outward display.

Temptation to snatch the other girl's plate and polish the remainder off was a very strong force but the taller girl managed to keep her greediness at bay as she glanced down at the half uneaten stack on the old Waffle House plate.

"Ah can get you a to go box, if ya want?"

It was the least she could do - if anything, to get the waffles out of her sight for the remainder of their conversation and prevent the temptation from getting stronger. But then Kat was pulling out her wallet and then a nice, shiny plastic car---

"Uh-uh, no ma'am."

Blonde curls went in twenty different directions as Mags forcibly shook her head, emphasizing her refusal for payment. "This one's on me - ain't gonna take your money, not for a meal here, of all places. Hell, you didn't even eat most of it!"

She paused for a moment, lips pursing as she debated on the gesture (and tasting the excess syrup apparently still lingering on her mouth).

"Tell ya what though. How 'bout you just make some proper waffles next week, 'n I can come have some of those?"

Kat couldn’t quite believe that Mags managed to eat the whole plate full of food…and honestly, she wasn’t sure that she wanted to think about it, but with a nod, she slid her own plate over. “Take them. You enjoy them.”

She frowned softly at the blonde’s refusal of her money. “But, Mags. You have had no other customers. Let me pay. I want to. I enjoyed lunch. I enjoyed you.”

The idea of making another waffle feast appealed to her though and Kat nodded looking almost eager. “I could do that. I will make many waffles again for us? You will come over…we can watch movies.” It sounded perfect. Though she figured that anything with Mags would end up being perfect.

“If you are sure about the money, I will not fight but…” She hesitated and drew out a five dollar bill from her pocket. “A tip for my waitress then?”

It was the least she could do.
