This has kind of been bugging me for a while.. whenever I cross the subject of Tibet...

If the current Dalai Lama dies, before Tibet is freed from China (and of course, hoping he doesn't..), will he have a successor?
I can only assume that the Dalai Lama always has to be born in Tibet... but it's hard to believe that the current situation wouldn't make locating them an utter impossibility.

How exactly does that all work?

He said that if Tibet is still under Chinese control by the time of his next rebirth, he'll choose to be reborn outside of Tibet (and China, I presume).

Oh, that makes sense.

I suppose India would be the most reasonable choice.... can only imagine those poor monks wandering all over the planet, otherwise. Considering all the fanfare the Pope got when he died, hard to see the media not trying to get involved... sweatdrop

I know this is off topic, but to me the current Dalai Lama, and Ppoe John-Paul for that matter, are what religious leaders are supposed to be. They seem to understand that what religion you follow isn't as important as what you get out of it. If the Dalai Lama isn't located when he dies the world will be losing a very important religious leader.

Well, His Holiness is considered to be an emmanation-body of the Buddha of Compassion, Chenresig. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, having attained enlightenment, have ended cyclic rebirth fueled by karma. At which point they can choose to be reborn in our world, but instead of being reborn by the force of their karma (which they've exhausted), they're reborn by the force of their wisdom or compassion.

His Holiness is reborn in this way, by the force of his compassion.

I'm not one to take this sort of thing as truth...or possible, but I digress:

I also recall him making a statement (it may have been mentioned here, or at a Wiki link, I can't recall) that he may simply choose not to be reincarnated since he feels the work of the Dalai Lama...rank I suppose you'd call it? is almost done/coming to an end, anyway, if the situation with China continues.

EDIT: Due to a combination of my lack of reading comprehension (not seeing that it said 2006) and shot nerves due to a tornado warning I accidentally necroed this not realizing it hadn't been posted in since last year. Sorry. gonk
