Classes had only just let out for the summer and already she was here again, while most would be home or out doing something - anything else. But EunKyung wanted to pick her classes out for the fall. She knew she could wait on it, she could wait a few weeks in fact, but she wanted to get it done and over with ahead of time - beat the crowds. She was supposed to be talking to some student helper in the guidance area, in a room down the hall where they had a computer lab, in order to set up her schedule for the fall. They'd be able to pull up her grades and see what she needed and what she could take next.

That was where she was headed, having gotten past the office and reception desk situated there. The heels she wore gently tapping at the floor as the dark haired female made her way down the hall and gently pushed the doors to the computer lab open and slipped inside. She wasn't much for speaking up, horrible at it really, and so she stood there looking rather out of place and quite a bit shy as she waited to see if any one of the student helpers would notice her, because she didn't want to interrupt them if they happen to be busy.

Seren did not normally do the Student Helper tasks in the computer lab... She did tutoring, mostly, but during Summer Intersession, she was not very needed, and even during summer SESSION, most people were too busy with the intense workload to have time to do tutoring sessions. She needed a way to keep earning money, for the things her scholarship did not cover, and this was one of the ways she had found to make up those extra dollars. Food and utilities, she made sure she had enough for that and her daily necessities, and other then that, accepted what she could to try to have a little extra... But if she got nothing else, she was able to accept it.

This week, however, they had been UNUSUALLY short staffed in the lab, and had called her in to work full time. She had fit one of her classes in, and was there or in the lab when she wasn't at home. Right now, she was at the front desk, waiting for the next student who needed assistance to approach.

She watched the young woman walk in, and waited a minute... and a few more... Before she realized the young lady, for some reason, was hesitant to approach. She considered her options, before finally saying "Hi there! I'm Seren, and if you need any help with the lab today, I can assist you!" in her best customer service-friendly voice.

Looking over, somewhat relieved someone had noticed her, the dark eyed female made her way over rather quickly. "That would be nice...ohhh...I'm EunKyung." That was one of the biggest things she had to get used to when she'd moved here several years back, given name than family name, but she was by now used to it. It now became odd when she went back to Korea or when talking to Korean friends. "EunKyung lee...I'm supposed to be signing up for my fall classes. They said I should come here to have someone go over my grades with me and help me pick the classes I can take this semester." She was here early, weeks earlier than most would be, but she wanted to make sure she got into her classes - she was being diligent.

She was, if nothing else, a dedicated student and good at her studies. She always had been....and she didn't want to let down her deceased parents, who had worked so hard for her to do well in school. They'd given so much...even being out that night picking her up from hagwon...that night they'd had the accident. She couldn't think of continuing and going to a hagwon again after that, she'd given it up after that night. She didn't like being in a car during rainstorms, no matter how little it was raining out, and at night she downright refused because she was too scared. She would often try and talk others out of driving at night when it was raining as well, her uncle, aunt, her elder cousins....so worried that what happened to her parents might happen to them and they'd leave her also.

It was for her parents who had left her, who worked so much for her to do well in school, that she took her studies seriously and was here this early to get into her classes before anyone else did.

Seren smiled warmly at the other girl. "Ah. It's a pleasure, EunKyung." She pronounced the name with slow care, like maybe she had some familiarity with hearing the sounds of the Korean Language, but minimal to no experience actually speaking it. "So, since you're working with a fellow student instead of a counselor, who are all on vacation, and I'll have to see your grades... I need you to fill out this form. It's just basically your name, and then date and signature at the bottom. It grants me permission to pull up your record. Legal protection and all, you know?"

Seren picked up a clipboard, with one of the forms on it, and pointed where Ms. Lee would need to fill out, then handed her a pen. It was one of those triplicate forms... One for Ms. Lee to keep, and two for the school to file in their various places. Once the young woman signed it, Seren came around the desk.

"Come on with me... We have some small cubicles in the back..." She gestured to where they were. "So we can review your information privately." She began to walk towards it, her smile getting a little warmer as she went, trying to show the young woman that Seren was totally friendly and happy to help. "Do you know what your eventual field of study will be, or do you want to focus on general education right now?" She asked as they got to the cubicle. "This is just to give me an idea on what classes we should be looking at first! I know when I was in my first two years of college, I was focusing on getting my GE out of the way, so I could focus on my major after."

"Of course, I understand." She could understand the school, and it's student help, wanting to cover themselves and have permission for everything they did. It was why she had no problem in dating and sighing her name and filling out the form, she filled the form out after dating and signing in fact. "You did better with my name than most people....my professors last semester still messed up even on the final day." She spoke softly, even giggling at the end. She knew her name wasn't easy, it never would be, but this student counselor had done better than most. Most also always said Lee while pronouncing the l which wasn't even really a thing in Korea. It was a double e sound...no L pronounced.

"My uncle wants me to go into law while my aunt says I should go into medical...I don't think I could do medical though." Not when she would be around people who might die...who might remind her of her own parents...or people like herself, those who lost their family. She was sure she couldn't go into health.

"I'm not sure at the moment to be honest. I might take your advice." If she could convince her aunt and uncle, which shouldn't be too hard, it was the smartest thing to do really.

Seren settled down in the chair besides the computer, and gestured at the other chair to encourage Eunkyung to sit. "Thank you. I... Don't have much knowledge of how to speak Korean... Other then a few food words, one word I hope to not hear again, and some names, I don't know any, but I grew up hearing it." There was a note of discomfort as she mentioned that, and her smile flickered, as if the discussion brought up things the older girl did not want to talk about. "But I do my best to try to pronounce names right."

She pulled up the young woman's grades, and studied them, then smiled. "It looks like you were a very hard working student, I'd say." She looked back over at EunKyung. "Now as for what your family wants... Those can be important factors..." Her eyes showed no emotion as she talked about family. "But in the end, what you want, and what interests you, is more important. You're going to put more time and effort, after all, into things you care about and are interested in."

She tilted her head, considering the other girl for a long moment. "What interests you? What really catches your attention, so that you can focus on it, and really DO whatever it is, or study it?"

Words the other didn't want to hear, or a word, not knowing what it was but also not wanting to ask EunKyung, polite as ever, spoke up gently. "If you ever want to learn Korean I can help. I moved here, with my family, a few years back. English is not my first language." As was obvious to anyone who listened to her speak long enough. Her English was good...but it was obvious it wasn't the language she grew up learning to speak.

Listening to the other she smiled gently. "I like to help others..." But she didn't want medical, she couldn't handle that and she knew that already. "I couldn't handle medical...like I said. Seeing people who I can't help, watching people die." That would tear at her, she was too soft for that. She knew she would work hard to help people...but she also knew each loss would hurt, even if it would make her better and more determined to do well. In the end the hurt to herself, the emotional hurt, wouldn't balance it out really....

"What would you suggest?"

Seren's eyes widened slowly and she turned to look at the younger woman. She had been able to guess, from the accent, that EunKyung was Korean born, rather then born here, but this was quite a kind offer from the young woman, especially as they had never met before. She was frozen for a moment, then a huge smile broke across her face at the kindness. "I would... greatly appreciate that. I always wanted to learn. I never got to talk to my grandparents much, because of the language barrier."

She tilted her head, considering the other young woman's words. Helping others... There were so many options there. "Well... Your uncle's suggestion of Law might not be bad, depending on what type of law you do. Teaching is a hugely under considered field, though it is also often under-remunerated and under-respected, unfortunately... But it's amazing how much of an effect a teacher can have on a young person's life... Especially if they're having a hard time at home, or something." There was a suggestion that this was personal experience, though it was clearly not an intended implication. "Science is good, too... You can use it to help people as a whole. Political science is an option, psychology... There's lots of ways. It depends on how you want to help most."

She leaned back, her head tilted to one side. "I think, if you're truly undecided, I would suggest taking general education requirements, with maybe one class a semester in a subject you're interested in as a potential, then see how you feel after?"

Watching the other, almost afraid she'd over stepped or something, she was happy when the other smiled instead of looking angry or upset. "I'm glad. It would be nice, for me, to teach for once rather than to be learning." As she'd had to do a lot to learn English, even back home in Korea. So to teach someone her language, for the positions to flip, it was nice...and a matter of pride. Someone wanting to learn her language! She'd been happy during the Olympics as well, as people had been looking up things about South Korea, the attention placed on her home country and news shows even here in Destiny City talking about South Korean culture. It had been wonderful....and warming. She could feel that same feeling, though to a lesser extent, now as well.

"Mmmm, I like that idea - the last one. It might give me a good feel for it. Because if I pick something now and later find I don't like it, that it's not for me, I'd have wasted some amount of time taking classes which won't transfer to the new needs. I think that would be a safe approach and beneficial...I might be able to use some things learned from each of the odd classes in the next one as well..." It wasn't a bad idea though education wasn't a bad idea nor was psychology but she wasn't sure on political science...maybe she could try a class on that first? Since she didn't know much of anything on the topic.

"I-if you want also...I can always help you on anything else...if you want to learn more than just speaking, reading, and writing Korean.,.." She offered gently.

"Then I truly am happy to accept. I don't have a lot of connections to that side of my family." She wished she could have had them, but her father had been pretty clear that she was 'UNWORTHY' due to being who and what she was, in her parents' minds, and so she was kept away from that stuff. She knew how to cook some of the foods, but... She pushed away from those thoughts, and just nodded. "We can discuss when and were to meet for this, after we get you all set up for the semester."

She turned back to the computer as she listened to the other girl talking about what she was considering, and nodded. "All right. So based on your grades and all..." She typed a bit, then hit the print button. After a moment, she grabbed the paper, and turned it towards the younger woman. "So here's the recommended Math class for you... You'll also need these English classes, they're a requirement, and also these other requirements here, for general education. Some of them have various options, some don't." She showed the elective options, the language options, and all. "Why don't you decide how many units you want to take in the first semester? Remember that 12 is a full semester load, and you don't want to kill yourself. 18 is considered a LOT, and to get more then that, you need Dean's approval... And you probably won't get that as a first semester Freshman."

She sighed a little, before continuing. "They don't want students giving themselves stress related breakdowns, plus you need to be able to have enough time to do your homework, study, eat, and even have a life, because all school and no relaxation makes for a very unhealthy mental state. So when deciding what to take... I suggest a balance of heavy and lighter. Like, say, taking an Arts req class and maybe a phys ed, along with one or two of the heavier courses."

She paused, considering the other offer, and finally said, slowly, "I want to learn a lot. I want to know about the culture of that half of my ancestry. I want to learn as much as I can. I am trying to teach myself the cooking of Korea... I use recipes from Maangchi, and a few others, but since I don't know how they're supposed to taste, I... have no idea if I'm doing it right."

"I'll be happy to help you then." To have someone who wanted to learn....she was sure they'd learn well. They just needed someone to teach them. It wasn't easy to learn a language on your own, at least she figured as much, because you didn't get to hear how words were properly pronounced...plus when dealing with some languages some words had multiple meanings...just different characters. "Yes, we can arrange for meetings. Someplace nice where you can learn." Someplace without a lot of people and not a lot to distract a person. Maybe even home or a cafe, both ideas sounding nice to her.

"How about...15? They have Korean here, right?" She knew it would be easy, and perhaps cheating in a sense, but she could also help other students while taking an easy class for herself. She wasn't sure if it was possible however. "English....Literature maybe? I like the idea of classical stories...or do they have one with focus on fairytales...?" Looking over the list didn't give too much detail on what each class would focus on...but she hoped she could get lucky. "math...I'll take the first math class I need..." Since she hadn't taken math class last semester, during her first semester.

"I'm used to a heavy load of classes...what is normal in Korea is a lot here - too much here. What you consider a lot I can handle - I"m sure of it." She had been under the stress, more than some even, and she had managed the load and to get things done. A social life...well that was something she managed to have some of, thanks in large part to her elder cousin, but it was what was normal back home. The normal there was not the normal here...so taking a lot she wouldn't mind...it would be a bit of a comfort even. It had been awhile since she'd pushed herself hard education wise.

"I can help with that...so can my two elder cousins. My hyung's like to cook....especially Seung-hyung." Since he had children now he cooked even more...wanting to provide homemade meals for the children. "I can help you on what things should taste like...and help you learn part of your culture. I can't imagine not knowing a part of yourself....that's terrible..." And she meant it. It was sad and it was wrong...especially when she wanted, obviously, to know about that part of her family...of her DNA.

Aria Starstone

"This will mean a great deal to me." She said, with quiet enthusiasm. She was going to learn the language of her grandparents... She'd have to email her brother, find out how they were doing. Maybe... maybe she'd learn enough to talk to them some, soon. Or at least before it was too late. She would send little prayers of hope to whatever was out there that this would be the case. "Perhaps one of the little private rooms in the library?"

"I... don't know. I took Spanish because I already spoke a little bit of that, as there were a large number of Spanish speakers in my home town, and I worked with a few, so I didn't... look into other options." She pulled up the Language Classes lists. "As for English Literature, that would be an elective unless you were majoring in English... You need English 1A and English 5 as the General Ed requirements." She turned and looked at her again. "And I understand that, about Korea, but I'm just saying the Dean might not be willing to sign off on that. Why not stick with 12 to fifteen, see how you like it, then if you really feel you can handle it, go for the whole deal? College is a lot heavier then high school classes."

She paused, then added "I've seen kids who insist they can handle it, because they handled a heavier load before, who end up taking on too much and washing out, or having to take a break because they stressed themselves to the breaking point. We try to encourage people not to do that to themselves, especially with all the Destiny City insanity." It was the closest she'd come to referencing the regular news reports about bad things happening, the so called terrorists. She didn't know what was actually going on but it did add a rather different level of stress then most university cities in the US had.

She considered the offer regarding the cousins. "I... Perhaps I can invite you over to try the food I make sometimes, see how it goes? I am... Not sure I would feel comfortable with lessons or even critique from a strange man." Let alone a strange Korean man. She'd never be able to stop thinking about her father, in that situation. She didn't know it, but her tone held some residual fear from the memories that were trying to bounce into her active thoughts. "But perhaps once I've gotten a bit more confident." She tried to sound positive, because she wanted to be able to not be terrified.

"We can do that as well. Even a cafe or home if you want....especially if you want to work on cooking." She offered u gently, wanting to offer as much help as she could. The other seemed so happy to be able to learn something, anything, about Korea and she wanted to offer up whatever she could to help. Seeing the elder so happy was just...warming - so warming.

"I could try Japanese...my elder cousin could help me. He learned it years ago..." She could ask Seung-hyung to help her with Japanese. It would be a bit easier than Spanish she figured, though Spanish might be useful in this country. But....somehow she wondered if Japan and other Asian tigers, countries doing well, wouldn't in some years make learning more Asian languages the better option.

"15 then I'll do...and if I can't learn Korean language then Japanese..." It was an option if it was available and if taking Korea wouldn't work when it came to the language requirements she had for a basic, general studies, degree.

"That would be acceptable...and maybe you can meet my hyungs at some point...Seung-hyung is married...he and his husband adopted recently." So she was a second cousin, though she felt more like an aunt, to the twins. "So you don't need to worry...if it's because my hyung is a strange man. He isn't like that..." Straight...or wasn't the sort to hurt someone, she didn't say which. "Mmmm....Korean school...was 16 hours a day....school and hagwon as well....but I will keep in mind to think this work might be harder." But she didn't think so...she'd done a semester already so she didn't think the second one would be harder...she could be wrong though.

"You're certainly welcome to come to my home, if you wish, and I can try cooking while I learn." She gave a calm, warm smile, and avoided mentioning that cafes cost money, that she rarely had. "I am good at cooking, generally, so I hope that I will learn to do things right."

She didn't talk about how she had to learn to cook well, or it was a painful lesson for her on failure. She didn't talk about humiliation, she didn't talk about shame, she didn't talk about being considered a curse. Or that word. She just kept that warm smile on her face, and if her eyes held a little pain, she hoped the other girl saw the warmth instead.

"Japanese could be a very good choice. It's a useful language for business, certainly, and other such things. We can look up what language options are available, once we get the rest of this set up." She nodded at the suggestion of 15 units. "It seems like a fair amount but I think that's manageable as long as they're not all heavy classes. Gotta remember that the expected out of class work will be commensurate to the level of the work. You can expect essays in English 1A, possibly a research project... Lots of Math homework, trust me on that... So definitely balance. So you want to take your Math requirement... That's..." She checked it. "4 units. Do you want to do 1A, or look at other reqs?"

The suggestion of meeting the girl's cousins at a later date was met with a small, if nervous smile, though the mention of a husband had the smile warming significantly, as did the adopted child. "Congratulations to them, and good for them, taking a child that was unwanted and making it loved and wanted." There was honest, and slightly raw, joy in her voice at those words. She still seemed uncertain. "It's... not... That I think he is... like anything." She just looked down, and simply said "Sometimes bad things happen to people when they are young, and fear can be hard to avoid. But perhaps. Perhaps it would help." Or perhaps she would get a reproving frown, if she did something wrong, and have a flashback.

This girl didn't need to know what had been done to Seren. No one did.

"1A for math sounds fine...and when it comes to cooking. Why don't you decide what you want to make and we can do the shopping together?" Since she'd know what likely went into the dish and could help the other with shopping, not knowing if the other had really gone to asian markets. They could be intimidating to some. With rows and shelves and isles filled with unfamiliar foods and labels they don't know and all sorts of brands they had never heard about...didn't know the quality of. She had felt like that the first few times grocery shopping in a western super market...she still felt like that if looking for some sort of new product. She'd always wonder over the brands and such.

"Japanese might be easier for me than Spanish anyway. The basis is similar enough that with some help from my cousin I should be ok there. A literature class would be easy, especially if it's fairytales perhaps." She had a big interest in fairytales, from all over, and that would make it an easier class for her plus one she'd enjoy. Math...she was good at math so that wouldn't be too difficult for her. "So if there is something like that for an English course I'd like that and then lets see if there is Japanese available. We'll see how many credits that'll be." She might wind up having to take a fourth class but that wouldn't be too bad, at least she hoped not. She was confident though that it wouldn't be bad, she'd handle it with ease. She was sure of herself.

It was the others words...not about her cousin but after it. Turning in her seat she reached out and carefully folded her arms around the older female as she hugged her. "Whatever happened...you didn't deserve it. And my cousin would never make you feel uncomfortable, especially if he knew you'd had anything bad happen. If you want to meet him and his husband let me know...they might help...just being around them." She'd be safe with them, she knew it, the other obviously was still hurting from whatever she'd experienced. She needed to heal...slowly. Whatever it was had been bad....and she hadn't healed yet...had she even dealt with it?

"You need to heal....we can try and help. But slowly...at your pace. You can be my unnie."
