It was shaping up to be a lovely day, though Brendan now regretted that he didn't go out earlier. The heat was one thing to contend with, but the humidity? Jesus Christ. He felt like a walking armpit, even before he started his run. Ah well, as his tee said: suns out, guns out!

On his fourth lap of the park, however, that tee was off. He didn't know why he had put it on, other than the fact that Brendan just liked sassy things in general. But he was getting back to form, and he knew he didn't need to feel ashamed about showing it off. Even if it meant draining his water bottle, finding a water fountain, and dunking his head under it. Were the waterworks on today? It was halfway across where he was, but it might be worth it to just get soaked all the way through. God knew he'd just dry right back up with this heat.

He slicked what hair had gotten loose from its ponytail back with the excess water and sighed as a breeze gave him some relief.

Not too far from that very fountain was a cluster of picnic tables arranged around one of those single grate barbecues that was standard in most parks throughout the country. Patchy grass and packed dirt surrounded the tables.

On top of the nearest table sat a young woman with long, dark hair falling in careless curls and neat braids over one bare shoulder. Bright eyes were focused on the digital screen of a rather fancy looking camera she had resting on her lap. She had on a pale romper with blue detailing, a plethora one different bangles and bracelets, and a pair of worn flip flops.

The camera was beeping up at her as she scanned through a series of pictures she'd taken just a few moments ago of a pair of swans and their babies in one of the park's ponds.

Alright, hydration station was visited, time to....Ugh. The ******** heat. Brendan almost considered powering up in front of all those random people for a moment. What was a secret identity revealed compared to having a proper headcloth to shade his face rather than his shirt? And some physical bonuses to boot? He sighed and drank some more instead. Fine. A quick break in the shade. It wouldn't do him any good to get heat exhaustion and collapse.

Tugging his shirt-turned-bandana off, Brendan wiped at his face like it was a towel as he considered his resting spot. There were a few trees besides some picnic tables that looked promising, if a bit close to some of the kids now out by the spouts. But there was also a young woman, presumably not with said families, who was checking something out on what looked like a nice camera around her neck. Well then.

"Gotten anything interesting on the roll?" he asked cheerfully.

Focused on her camera, Jack didn't notice anyone walking up to her. So when he spoke, voice a soft base near her shoulder, she startled visibly, and audibly, and clutched at the camera to keep from dropping it. "Oh, ah," it came out as a nervous laugh which increased in volume and timbre when she looked up to find a very nice looking shirtless chest right at eye level. Dark skin flushing even darker, she jerked her gaze up to his face.

"H-hi!" Her thumb smoothed along the edge of her camera self consciously. "I, ah," she started weakly, then gave herself a mental kick to jump start her brain into coherency. "Sorry. Yes, I think so. It'll be easier to see once I upload them, but I've got a good feeling about today's haul." She grinned, possibly touch over enthusiastically.

"You, uh, you out for a run?" As if it wasn't obvious. "Probably melting in this heat," she chuckled. Wow, stop talking right now. What is wrong with you?

Ah s**t, he startled her. He raised his hands in apology. "Did I break your concentration? Sorry about that," Brendan said. Maybe she had been in the middle of something after all. Or she was just shy.

Either way, he gave her some space and sat on the opposite end of the picnic table, sighing. "Yeah, I'm dying just a bit," he agreed as he wiped at his face uselessly with the shirt. "Forgot how hot it gets down here. But, no pain, no gain, right?" Oh, God, his deodorant wasn't working if his shirt was anything to go by. Now he felt twice as bad for sneaking up on her. Some sweaty stranger being all nosy.

"I won't get in the way of the photo op. Just gotta...catch my breath for a moment."

"Oh no, it's fine!" Camera in her lap Jack held her hands up between them. "I was just deleting the blurry ones, no concentration needed for that." It was followed by a nervous chuckle and one hand moving to tuck a curl behind her ear as bright eyes flicked down to his chest again and then back up. He was very distracting, but not at all in a bad way.

Jack put the cap back on her lense before drawing the strap up over her head so she could set the camera on the table beside her. "No worries, I want shooting anything at the moment."

There was a small pause as Jack chewed on her lip, then she looked back over at him and smiled. "There's a splash pad here, if you wanted to cool off quickly."

Ahhh, so less at work and more flustered, then. Cute~

"Mmm, good idea," he said as he got up and approached the splash pad. It was currently the home of several kids and a soaked man chasing them, so Brendan stepped to one side and waited for the water to spout again. When it did, he redirected the flow with his hand and gave himself a second, messier shower.

He then pulled his head back, hair swinging back dramatically and sending a small spray in its wake.

"Hobby or job?" Brendan asked as he tried to comb his hair back, blinking drops away.

She actually hadn't expected him to take her advice immediately, and she blinked at him as he started heading for the splash pad, worried in that moment that maybe she'd sounded like she was trying to chase him off despite her protests to the contrary.

Misplaced worry, as it turned out. A quick dousing in the cool fountain water and he was heading back towards the picnic table she was sitting on. Soaked. Water dripping down a muscular bare chest. Running shorts clinging to his...thighs.

It was almost a solid minute before she realized he'd asked her a question and the blush that had started to fade darkened again. She blinked at him, almost startled, and closed her eyes as she shook her head. "Sorry. Um. Both." Get a grip. "I mean, right now it's more of a hobby, I do some freelance stuff on the side, but I'd really like to make a career out of it."

He grinned, but not maliciously, as the minute's worth of silence piled on. The nurses had flattered and scorned him for his ego back when he had still been in physical training, but it was nice to see he could affect a stranger just as well. However, she was probably starting to feel bad...

"Go for it," Brendan said, pulling out the finger guns. That usually lightened the mood enough. "I always thought photography was kinda cool, but like. Unless I was one've those guys that went and did extreme stuff like get up close to volcanoes or bears or something, it wouldn't be my thing." He was too much of an adrenaline junkie. Hell, runner's high was most of the reason he forced himself to do laps in the first place. "So like, for journalism you mean? Or like National Geographic, or...?"

The grin, nor the finger guns helped at all. Jack blinked up at him, cheeks just as red as they had been.

"No, more like a family photographer, or weddings." There was good money in that, and she did enjoy it. "I do like taking pictures of random things, but it's harder to making a living of that." It required selling individual shots, and there was no garunteed anyone would be interested. Putting her favorites into a gallery would have been nice, though.

"What about you? What do you do?" Aside from running around shirtless and wet. she folded her have and tucked then between her knees to keep from fidgeting.

Clearly he hadn't thought of that. "Oh, yeah, word." Poor thing was still red as an apple.

"I'm a mechanic over at DC Ironworks," Brendan told her. "If you ever need a tune up, call me." He even made the gesture, because apparently today was going to start of silly. "But I like to think of myself as a professional beach bum slash surfer most of the time. Gotta do what I can before the season's over and I'm stuck in pools again."

Talking helped, somehow. It was a distraction from his shirtless state and let her focus on what they were talking about instead, and as a result the heat in her cheeks began to cool and fade. Even with him still being silly and charming and telling her to call him, though he probably said that to everyone, being a mechanic.

"Oh, you surf?" Dark brows rose. "God, I've always wondered how folks do that, it seems so unreal. That's pretty awesome though." Jack sure as ******** didn't have the balance for it. "Is it hard to learn?" She'd always imagined it would be. Still, there were an awful lot of surfers on the DC beaches.

"Nah, not at all! All you need's a sense of balance, a nice wave, and a good teacher." Brendan flashed a grin that implied he fulfilled the last category, one that he dimmed down the flirtiness of for her sake. He wasn't someone that liked flustering people if they looked uncomfortable, as she obviously did.

Squinting skyward, he sighed a little. "I better get back on the track before the sun gets much higher, though," he said as he unwound his shirt from around his head and put it back on. What water was left that hadn't already evaporated quickly soaked into the fabric, mixing with sweat and probably a few tears for getting up that early to begin with. "Good luck with the whole photo thing, Miss...?"

"Really?" No way was it that easy, but Jack found herself wondering if would hurt anything to just give it a try. Brendan seemed so confident that he could teach. Girl, you're ridiculous.

The shirt came off his head and Jack tipped her head back to look up at the sky as he did, a soft smile playing over her lips. "Yeah, probably. Wouldn't want you to melt," she flashed hima grin as she said it, all bright and humorous with an edge of something flirty that was punctuated by therosy tint to tanned cheeks. "And I'm jack."

It'd been really easy taking to him, effortless even. He certainly wasn't interrupting anything, but she could understand not wanting to have to finish his run with the sun beating down on him. "Do-do you have a number I could reach you at?" Was thattoo forward? "You said to call ifi needed my car worked on. Or maybe asurfung lesson?" Was that less transparent, or more...? Screw it.

His grin grew bigger. "Yeah! Here." It didn't matter what reason she might use his number for--socializing was socializing. And she looked cute, which was the important part. But just in case, he gave Jack both his work number and his cell.

"It's Brendan," he added as he began to step away, fixing his shirt-hat as he did. "I'll see ya around, girl~" And with a wink, he was off to sweat and tears land once again.
