Gathering the courage to leave his home had been difficult. So difficult in fact, that Rewi decided the occasion was one he could classify as 'momentous.' Rewi had always been a boy who preferred to do things 'later' rather than now, and setting out on a long journey was one of those things. Before he'd even left Naele, he'd instead taken a detour deeper into his own territory for a brief recess rather than moving forward, as his family expected him to do. He'd been given that responsibility, and it was one he was almost frightened of.

But he also knew that he didn't intend to avoid the trip to Noelani forever. And so, it had happened that later that very same day, he'd crossed the canal into Pale'iko for the first time. The waters were almost uncomfortably cooler than he was accustomed to, clearer even than when he'd practiced in the current that spilled from the river and into the waters of his own home.

Here, everything seemed like it glistened.

The riverbed was covered in smooth stones rather than mud and murk. Tiny fish flashed their scales in the sunlight. And everything was such a pure blue that even keeping his eyes open for too long almost made him dizzy. The Kaha'iko territory wasn't anything Rewi was used to. He'd only made it to the settlement that served as neighbor to his own before he was tired and utterly demoralized.

The land he'd traveled between Naele and Ukupaia wasn't great, and Rewi had expected that he would be able to cover more distance on his first day, but a boy accustomed to laziness had no business fighting so hard to continue on just the first day, he reasoned. And so, without too much worry over it, Rewi had decided to take a breather outside a small shop, where he could lean against the sturdy wood for support and still not be in anyone's way.

Moani's family had been travelling for a bit now, going from village to village treating the sickly and making sure children were all born okay from their eggs. From time to time they also helped new expecting parents. This was the bulk of the work their mother did and while she did allow Moani to come along to some appointments, most of the time they were sent off either to gather supplies or to go and be a child as their mother put it. Moani didn't mind either way, they went off to play with their younger siblings or the older ones who were still with the family.

Their family were also one of the very few to treat some of the Menehune that traveled to their lands and seemed to be sick. This made up the bulk of their family's work as it was very rare for anyone to want to treat the others. Thus Moani was used to traveling the bordering towns and meeting a many Menehune.

So seeing the young one leaning on the shop door was nothing new to them, though they did give them enough space. They gave them a quick glance and briefly wondered if he was okay. He did seem to be tired, Moani didn't want to assume anything but if he wasn't feeling too well they ought to get treated.

"Are you feeling okay?" Moani stopped floating for a bit waiting to see.

Rewi shut his eyes and inhaled a long, slow breath. This was fine, he told himself. He'd given himself enough time between his departure and when he needed to arrive in Noelani that if he needed to take breaks to acclimate himself, that would be fine. The waters here were so unusual, even though they were so close to Elehun, so as he moved farther inward, Rewi was sure to only become less familiar with everything and progressively more drained. He should rest whenever he needed to, to conserve energy for later in the trip.

But he'd wanted so much more on his first day. He'd been anxious when he set off, and to only make it to Ukupaia wasn't exactly what he'd hoped for. Any confidence he might have had was really starting to slip away...

When a voice reached him, Rewi's emerald eyes fluttered open and flicked quickly to the speaker: a small, grey Kaha'iko. Not many had actually approached him, yet, neither young nor old, and this one was clearly at an age where Rewi thought the parents might not be very comfortable with their child speaking with a Menehune... But, then again, maybe no one here cared. Ukupaia was close enough to Naele that Rewi's race shouldn't be too uncommon a sight. And many were traveling.

Kaha'iko were supposed to be more accepting than the Menehune, anyway.

"Ah, yes, I think so," Rewi answered slowly. He didn't feel injured or sick, anyway, so that was pretty accurate. "Just tired, mostly. A little dizzy." He glanced to the younger Kaha'iko, then away. "I'm not very accustomed to swimming against the current, and the water here is bright."
